Abraham in top FPL form as Chelsea and Wolves’ defences ship more goals

Chelsea put in a dazzling attacking display to emerge 5-2 victors over Wolves at Molineux, with hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham (£7.3m) stealing the headlines to underline his credentials as one of the leading value-for-money forwards in 2019/20.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-5 Chelsea

Goals: Patrick Cutrone (£5.8m) Tammy Abraham (£7.3m) own-goal | Abraham x3, Mason Mount (£6.5m), Fikayo Tomori (£4.5m)

Assists: Matt Doherty (£6.0m) Roman Saïss (£4.4m) | Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) Jorginho (£5.0m), Michy Batshuayi (£6.7m)

Bonus: Abraham x3, Mount, Tomori x2

With all five of the goals from Frank Lampard’s side being scored by players produced from their academy, this was a performance and a result that strongly justified the Chelsea boss’s faith in youth during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

There can be no doubting, though, that despite the emphatic team performance and such a bruising scoreline, this was an afternoon that belonged to Abraham.

With seven goals from four league starts, and two braces and a hat-trick in his last three games, Abraham is continuing the goalscoring form that he displayed in 2018/19 whilst on loan at Aston Villa during their promotion-winning campaign from the Championship.

The 21-year-old was exceptional throughout the afternoon at Molineux, and despite scoring an own-goal to reduce his haul by two points, Abraham’s total of 14 points was his highest of the season and his third successive double-digit haul.

Owned by just 18.9% of managers, those who are still in possession of a Wildcard but may be considering deploying it over the coming weeks will find it difficult to resist the goalscoring appeal that Abraham is providing at an extremely competitive price.

The England striker was supported in his goalscoring endeavours by fellow academy graduates Mason Mount (£6.4m) and Fikayo Tomori (£4.5m), who both scored well-taken goals.

On his first league start for the club in 2019/20, Tomori fired an outstanding strike from 25 yards beyond the grasp of Rui Patricio (£5.1m) to give Chelsea an early lead alongside sending a timely reminder to Lampard that his assets as a player in the team are not solely defensive.

Mount then rounded off the scoring after good work in the final third to add gloss to the scoreline that Lampard will hope can give this Chelsea side momentum heading into their next three fixtures against Liverpool (h), Brighton (h) and Southampton (a).

Despite their highly impressive attacking display at Molineux, the defensive fragilities that have seen Chelsea keep no clean sheets in their first five Premier League fixtures were on show on Saturday afternoon, and managers monitoring assets of the west London side will certainly be more inclined to invest in their attacking options as opposed to their defence.

Whilst Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger (£6.0m) did go down injured, Lampard confirmed his removal from play was more precautionary ahead of a packed run of fixtures.

“He has a groin issue that he bothered, near me actually. It was more than a precaution. Hopefully not too bad. Hopefully, it is a quick turnaround.”

For Wolves, this was a result that continued their underwhelming start to the season, and any managers still in possession of defensive assets from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are likely to be considering moving them on.

The 5-2 defeat to Chelsea marked Wolves’ fourth successive failure to keep a clean sheet, and the added pressure of Europa League football seems to already be taking its toll on the West Midlands side before the group stage has even begun.

Whilst Patrick Cutrone (£5.8m) did register his first league goal for the club, there were very few positives for Wolves to take from the game as they were outclassed at home by a calibre of opposition who the Wanderers typically excel against.

Yet whilst Wolves fell short of the standards they set for themselves in 2018/19, this was a performance that underlined Chelsea’s credentials as being serious challengers for Champions League qualification, whilst pointing to some extremely promising work being done by manager Lampard.

If the Chelsea boss can persist in his faith of players such as Mount and Abraham, who are presently performing to an almost undroppable standard, then these are assets who could offer exceptional value into the Blues’ frontline.

Whilst Mount is currently the top-owned Chelsea asset with an ownership of 21.9%, this is likely to change in the build-up to Gameweek 6 as Fantasy managers flock to the irresistible Abraham who is seemingly in the form of his life; defying critics who claimed the 21-year-old could not make the grade in the top-flight.

Lampard will be extremely pleased with this result from Chelsea, and as the Blues bid to build on such an efficient performance with a challenging game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge next weekend, it will be difficult for Fantasy managers not already in ownership of Mount and Abraham to continue ignoring these extremely exciting English prospects.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Vallejo, Coady, Saiss; Traore (Doherty 56′), Dendoncker (Cutrone 46′), Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Jota, Jimenez (Gibbs-White 69′).

Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Rudiger (Zouma 46′), Christensen, Tomori; Azpilicueta, Kovacic (Barkley 70′), Jorginho, Alonso; Willian, Abraham (Batshuayi 77′), Mount.

    Pope (Heaton)
    Rico Digne TAA Zinc (Lund)
    Salah Sterling KDB Mount (Dendo)
    Haller Pukki (Gwood) 1.2itb 1ft

The plan was originally to upgrade (1) Dendo to Cantwell (and get Soyuncu the following week in for Rico) or (2) Ceballos with no cash itb.

    A. Stick to original plan. Leaning on first one.
    B. Zinchenko and Gwood to Barnes and 4.5def.
    C. Digne and Gwood to Abraham and 4.5def
    D. WC this week. Would get Aubu/Abraham, cheaper defence etc.
    E. Save and mix it up following week.

      Dendo -> Cantwell
      Rico -> Soyuncu
      Greenwood -> Ayew

All solid and cheap options to improve 11th, 12th and 13th slots.

I’d be looking at how to turn Mount into Son - don’t see bench as worth transfers.

Mane and 4.5 from Zinc would get you close.

Early thoughts on this lot folks?

    Pope
    TAA Soyuncu Digne
    Salah KDB Cantwell Sterling
    Barnes Pukki Haller

    Button - Mount Lundstram Mings

    2 FTs, Zero itb.

I wildcarded GW 4 and am looking at a possible switch of Barnes to Abraham in GW 7 but would have to free up a bit of cash this week for that.

Probably 0.8 I'd say. Yeah Digne could be downgraded but not sure who to. My defence is not the best and has been a big let down for me since the start of the season.

I have similar team and has been very disappointing past two weeks. Burnley fixtures quite good. I am going to see how Haller plays tomorrow. The alternative is to get rid of Sterling say, and upgrade the whole attack as far as I can see, or sit it out and hope for better luck or form from the team

Spent all day on WC drafts and this is what I've come up with currently.

    Pope (Woodman*)
    Trent Zinchenko (Lundstram/Rico/Soyuncu)
    Salah KDB Son Mount Cantwell
    Aguero Pukki (Nketiah*)

    0.1ITB

3 way rotation between the cheap guys at the back, got a lot of big hitters in there but also some good value guys as well. KDB/Son are good cash cows in case I want to swap to 3 up top but for now I think they are great options.

Is it genius or too imbalanced?

Zinchenko is a bit of a question mark right now. Otherwise good, I like it. Interesting that you avoided Abraham/Auba/Haller - but something has to give.

I've got drafts Abraham/Wilson/Haller. As you say you can't have them all. Agree with Zinchenko being a bit dodgy, not many cheaper options I like though and surely he's good for a clean sheet v Watford, after that he's on the chopping block

      Seems legit.

Salah-> Mane or Aguero -> Aubameyang would give you funds to upgrade Rico (Bednarek?) and Nketiah (Ayew?), though. CL rotation and a random injury could hit you pretty hard with such a weak bench.

Cheers for the reply 🙂 Those aren't 2 downgrades I really want to make though.

I'm firmly in the Salah over Mane camp and probably always will be. Kun and Auba both top strikers but 1 has an excellent supporting cast around him and the other doesn't.

I'm trying to gear my team to get in as many explosive assets as possible and if I field 10 or get a couple of cheap 1 or 2 pointers off the bench I'm not fussed. Rico and Lundstram may lose their places but I've always got the cash cow of Son or KDB to spread funds around If I'm absolutely desperate 🙂

With that mindset, I might swap Zinc to a 5.5 or 5.0 with less CL rotation risk.

          5.5: Coleman, Wan-Bissaka, Alderweireld, Chilwell

          5.0: Maitland-Niles, Boly

Good suggestion. I reckon I'll give him the Watford game as you'd expect City to bounce back in that one and if they look terrible again I move him on 🙂

Sounds good. Cancelo is a top class player who is super likely to rotate with him once CL starts. The difficult part is that Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham will also have CL matches while Arsenal, ManU and Wolves have Europa League matches. So if you really want to be rotation free, it seems like Everton, Leicester, Southampton, Sheffield are some of the best choices. You already have Soyuncu and Lundstram, so I'd say Coleman or a cheaper Southampton defender.

Am I the only one amused by how the ticker makes every Chelsea and Arsenal fixture red for attack. There may be worse defences around but they’re mostly just decimated by injuries.

A, B or C? Have two FT so could do A for -4, B for -8 and C for -12. Have WC as an option and would consider using instead of -12. Abraham is the key player being brought in to replace Wickham in all options. Thoughts appreciated ta.

    A:

    Pope
    TAA / Digne / Soy
    Salah / Sterling / KDB /Mount
    Abraham / Haller / Pukki

    Button / Lund / Dendo / Rico

    B:

    Pope
    TAA / Digne / VDD
    Salah / Son / KDB / Mount
    Abraham / Haller / Pukki

    Button / Cantwell / Lund / Guilbert

    C:

    Pope
    TAA / Digne / Soy
    Mane / Sterling / KDB / Mount
    Abraham / Haller / Pukki

    Button / Cantwell / Lund / Mings

    Pope

    Auba Pukki Aguero

    (Button Dendon Rico Lunds)

What's all this Rico craze? He seemed nailed to start this week since all bournemouth's injuries but not as soon as Kelly etc return (soon). He's played what 2/4 even without their first 2 choices of left back? Am I missing something?

Torn between 2 extremes. Save a transfer (for 2 frees week after when Chelsea fixtures swing. Ab and Mount in then) or wildcard?

    Heaton 4
    TAA, Digne, Zinc, Tarkowski (Rico)
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Ceb (Donk)
    Rashford, Pukki (Wick)

Planned moves for the next 2 GWs -

      GW 6 - TAA + Kane ➡ Aubameyang + Boly for -4
      GW 7 - Wickham + KDB + Zinchenko ➡ Wilson + Son + Tomori for -8

      Gives me -

      Pope - 4m
      Boly - Pieters - Tomori - Lundstram - Hanley
      Sterling - Mane - Son - Mount - Cantwell
      Aubameyang - Wilson - Pukki

Will rotate keep making changes to that Tomori spot based on fixtures. Plenty in that price range like Soyuncu/Engels/Dunk/Ward/Masuaku etc.

The front 8 would be settled. The defense is weak but would utilise FTS to catch the good fixtures from the 4.5m defs. Thoughts? 🙂

TAA back in GW 13 when fixtures change for Liverpool and Alisson is back.

Moreover, I feel TAA is due a few benchings with tough PL fixtures and CL coming up. Gomez to get games. Happened last season.

It seems like your taking very good players out whilst throwing away points, but if you believe in the moves go for it.

To generate funds for GW 7 moves. TAA has Chelsea this week. May as well take him out now rather than next gw when he has SHU.

            1. MTPockets
                4 years, 6 months ago

Or is it just because -12 in one go feels wrong? Adds up to the same thing, and in the event that something else happens to change your plans before GW7 would rather be left with TAA than Boli

Just more likely to benefit from taking TAA out this week as he has a tough fixtures. I'm game for even -16s 😀

Rico is not nailed. He played due to injuries. It depends on what the rest of your defence is like. If he is a 'starter' then no. If hes bench fodder then go for it. Wilson outscores Digne over course of the season.
