Abraham in top FPL form as Chelsea and Wolves’ defences ship more goals

Chelsea put in a dazzling attacking display to emerge 5-2 victors over Wolves at Molineux, with hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham (£7.3m) stealing the headlines to underline his credentials as one of the leading value-for-money forwards in 2019/20.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-5 Chelsea

Goals: Patrick Cutrone (£5.8m) Tammy Abraham (£7.3m) own-goal | Abraham x3, Mason Mount (£6.5m), Fikayo Tomori (£4.5m)

Assists: Matt Doherty (£6.0m) Roman Saïss (£4.4m) | Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) Jorginho (£5.0m), Michy Batshuayi (£6.7m)

Bonus: Abraham x3, Mount, Tomori x2

With all five of the goals from Frank Lampard’s side being scored by players produced from their academy, this was a performance and a result that strongly justified the Chelsea boss’s faith in youth during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

There can be no doubting, though, that despite the emphatic team performance and such a bruising scoreline, this was an afternoon that belonged to Abraham.

With seven goals from four league starts, and two braces and a hat-trick in his last three games, Abraham is continuing the goalscoring form that he displayed in 2018/19 whilst on loan at Aston Villa during their promotion-winning campaign from the Championship.

The 21-year-old was exceptional throughout the afternoon at Molineux, and despite scoring an own-goal to reduce his haul by two points, Abraham’s total of 14 points was his highest of the season and his third successive double-digit haul.

Owned by just 18.9% of managers, those who are still in possession of a Wildcard but may be considering deploying it over the coming weeks will find it difficult to resist the goalscoring appeal that Abraham is providing at an extremely competitive price.

The England striker was supported in his goalscoring endeavours by fellow academy graduates Mason Mount (£6.4m) and Fikayo Tomori (£4.5m), who both scored well-taken goals.

On his first league start for the club in 2019/20, Tomori fired an outstanding strike from 25 yards beyond the grasp of Rui Patricio (£5.1m) to give Chelsea an early lead alongside sending a timely reminder to Lampard that his assets as a player in the team are not solely defensive.

Mount then rounded off the scoring after good work in the final third to add gloss to the scoreline that Lampard will hope can give this Chelsea side momentum heading into their next three fixtures against Liverpool (h), Brighton (h) and Southampton (a).

Despite their highly impressive attacking display at Molineux, the defensive fragilities that have seen Chelsea keep no clean sheets in their first five Premier League fixtures were on show on Saturday afternoon, and managers monitoring assets of the west London side will certainly be more inclined to invest in their attacking options as opposed to their defence.

Whilst Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger (£6.0m) did go down injured, Lampard confirmed his removal from play was more precautionary ahead of a packed run of fixtures.

“He has a groin issue that he bothered, near me actually. It was more than a precaution. Hopefully not too bad. Hopefully, it is a quick turnaround.”

For Wolves, this was a result that continued their underwhelming start to the season, and any managers still in possession of defensive assets from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are likely to be considering moving them on.

The 5-2 defeat to Chelsea marked Wolves’ fourth successive failure to keep a clean sheet, and the added pressure of Europa League football seems to already be taking its toll on the West Midlands side before the group stage has even begun.

Whilst Patrick Cutrone (£5.8m) did register his first league goal for the club, there were very few positives for Wolves to take from the game as they were outclassed at home by a calibre of opposition who the Wanderers typically excel against.

Yet whilst Wolves fell short of the standards they set for themselves in 2018/19, this was a performance that underlined Chelsea’s credentials as being serious challengers for Champions League qualification, whilst pointing to some extremely promising work being done by manager Lampard.

If the Chelsea boss can persist in his faith of players such as Mount and Abraham, who are presently performing to an almost undroppable standard, then these are assets who could offer exceptional value into the Blues’ frontline.

Whilst Mount is currently the top-owned Chelsea asset with an ownership of 21.9%, this is likely to change in the build-up to Gameweek 6 as Fantasy managers flock to the irresistible Abraham who is seemingly in the form of his life; defying critics who claimed the 21-year-old could not make the grade in the top-flight.

Lampard will be extremely pleased with this result from Chelsea, and as the Blues bid to build on such an efficient performance with a challenging game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge next weekend, it will be difficult for Fantasy managers not already in ownership of Mount and Abraham to continue ignoring these extremely exciting English prospects.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Vallejo, Coady, Saiss; Traore (Doherty 56′), Dendoncker (Cutrone 46′), Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Jota, Jimenez (Gibbs-White 69′).

Chelsea XI (3-4-3): Kepa; Rudiger (Zouma 46′), Christensen, Tomori; Azpilicueta, Kovacic (Barkley 70′), Jorginho, Alonso; Willian, Abraham (Batshuayi 77′), Mount.

    (A) Barnes > Pukki remain 4-4-2

      Both are decent options.

      No

Kun and Mane 86 points so far and Mane missed one. On form there is absolutely nothing in it.

Find this fear thing is really odd. Sterling and Salah owners miss out in the same way when Kun and Mane are the ones to hit.

Ownership doesn't matter. Some weeks more beat you - some weeks you beat more.

Mo will eventually outpoint Mane I guess but Mane is the one with the better home record recently I believe and has outscored Mo for quite a while now. He's a great pick imo

It's only a million perhaps but I think that goes a decent way right now.

Like Auba. I may well move back from Kun onto him around 7 to fund more in midfield.

Pens are just one more goal. Liverpool don't get that many. It's United who are the kings there

Three of next 5 are teams who almost invariably finish above them (they're a bottom 8 team really) and they have never been prolific in attack.

Villa away could well be another Brighton too

Tough one isn't it, he's blanked last two but you can look at stuff so many different ways, he's had same amount of shots and shots on target as Abraham playing for a worse team against harder opposition. Also been in form for most of 2019, I'm trying to also convince myself on getting him.

Well, i am officially sickened by how this season is going, desperately in need of help guys.
Team is in absolute disarray, and it is clear i have no clue what i am doing this season at a rank of 2.6 mill! (Jesus!). All rivals ahead, and looking like season already over, no idea what i'm doing wrong!

What in the blue hell do i do here to stop the rot? At this stage of misery i am not averse to taking multiple hits.

      Pope
      TAA - Zinchenko - Digne
      Lanzini - Sterling - Salah - KDB - Mount
      Pukki - Abraham

If that's your team, then no panic. Very well positioned.
Don't know your plans for lanzini, but can you lanzini and Wickham-> Barnes cantwell?

I'd hold for the time being, especially given midweek games. If I had to move anyone, I'd consider Zinchenko, Digne, or Pope (although not sure for who). But given my results, what do I know? : )

Ok cool, Digne would be the one i'd be looking at to ship, but h'es either massive haul or bust, patience is required with him i know that.
Zinc will need shipping sooner rather than later, buit yes i'll hold for the time being then, and it's always good getting someone else's perspective, i'm surely hoping we'll both improve 🙂

The team is almost perfect lol. Surprised you're that low with it. Lanzini the only one I'm not a big fan of, but see how he does tomorrow. Zinchenko might have to go soon but hardly any defenders delivering anyway.

Me too mate, me too, i'm literally baffled as to how poorly it has performed, rivals leaving me for dead with mediocre teams, it's actually laughable in ways. I WC'd early, and not even taken loads of hits to get it that way, just so deflated. Shall see how Lanzini does tomorrow, and Zinc will defo have to go soon.

You’ll have a clearer picture as who Pep will start this Wed. ...if Jesus gets CL than Aguero should start in the league, and if he does than Sterling wont be as appealing... Aguero is more likely to outscore him if he starts

1st take a few deep breaths. There now. 2nd, your team is is not in need of surgery. 3rd, more breathing. You have a very solid starting 11 for the coming week.

If I were in your shoes I would try to put my OR out of my thinking. In doing that I'd then seriously consider saving the FT unless there's an injury later in the week or revealed during press conferences. That way you can play a mini-WC for a hit the following week and sort out what needs sorting.

If you insist on making a move right away I'd consider Lanzini to Cantwell, who will likely rise in price tonight, to free up funds for other moves.

Finally, focus on the end of the season when you'll get to crow about your return from the dead and into the top 10K, which after all, is your birthright. 🙂

What a lovely and sincere post, thanks so much for that werkself. You're right, try to put OR out of my thinking for now, and enjoy the very potential green arrows i could acheive being at my rank as it is now.
I'll certainly save the transfer for now pending any injuries and maybe do a mini WC the following week. I guess i can leave Cantwell for now, Lanzini may impress tomorrow and help me out a bit.
Haha aww well i really hope i can live to tell the tale come season end, lots can change though in a matter of weeks i'm sure, just fingers and toes crossed 🙂

I’d say option 3 because overall it’s a good team that doesn’t need wildcarding. Not convinced by doubling up on Liverpool at the back. Could save you some money, but the transfers you mentioned definitely seem priority

Thoughts on wildcarding for a structural change - 442 to 343 (Cantwell each week)? Feel like there is a wealth of forward options.

            Pope (Button)

            Haller Pukki

            AWB - Otamendi
            Montoya > Soyuncu
            Sterling - Cantwell
            Haller - Abraham

Come on you need at least two unless you've already gone.

(Nice to meet another Martial owner 🙂 I'm aiming for Mane kdB Son Martial midfield in 7)

Similar midfield to what I want too! I really hope Martial is fit this week, can't transfer him out if he isn't lol.

Any chance that Aurier has locked up the right back spot for Spurs? If so, could be great value at 4.9...

Would be good to know but Foyth back in training so not sure. Hard to see him benched on today’s form

What to do here? 1 FT & 1.8 ITB

              Ryan - Heaton
              TAA - Zinc - Digne - Taylor - Lund
              Salah - Sterling - Trossard* - Lanzini - Dend
              Haller - Pukki - Barnes

Trossard out is the obvious one.
              Other ideas?
