Aubameyang benefits in Lacazette’s absence as Watford assets impress

An entertaining 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road is the focus of our latest Scout Notes article, as we run the rule over Manchester City’s Gameweek 6 opponents and assess Arsenal’s latest away-day display.

Watford 2-2 Arsenal

  • Goals: Tom Cleverley (£4.9m), Roberto Pereyra (£5.8m) | Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) x2
  • Assists: Gerard Deulofeu (£6.2m) | Sead Kolasinac (£5.4m), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.1m)
  • Bonus: Aubameyang x3, Deulofeu, Cleverley x2

There have been, to varying degrees, significant changes at Watford and Arsenal since we last wrote about these two clubs in a Scout Notes article.

The struggling Hornets dispensed with the services of Javi Gracia during the international break and reappointed former boss Quique Sanchez Flores, who returned to Vicarage Road after a three-year absence.

While perhaps not quite as seismic, Friday afternoon brought the news that Arsenal will be without Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) until October, an injury blow that has implications for the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Nicolas Pepe (£9.4m) as Fantasy assets – something we will discuss further down this article.

Sunday was our first look at Watford in the second Flores era and the impressions were fairly positive, even if the Spaniard’s pragmatic reputation and defence-first policy have so far done little to stem the flow of goals being conceded.

Miracles can’t be expected after one week, of course, and there’ll be many Fantasy managers hoping that the Hornets are still penetrable when they head north to the Etihad next weekend.

Flores lined his troops up in a 4-2-3-1 for this game, with Kiko Femenia (£4.4m) and Jose Holebas (£4.8m) as his two full-backs.

Watford looked particularly vulnerable in the wide areas during the last 25 minutes of the first half and it was no coincidence that both of Arsenal’s goals during this period were assisted by the Gunners’ overlapping full-backs, with Sead Kolasinac (£5.4m) and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£5.1m) supplying the passes that Aubameyang converted.

Pepe had earlier fired a warning shot narrowly wide of Ben Foster‘s (£4.9m) goal when cutting in off the right flank and Aubameyang was inches away from turning in Mesut Ozil‘s (£7.3m) low pass from the same wing.

What makes it difficult to appraise Watford’s defensive credentials going into Gameweek 6 is that: a) they shaded possession for much of the game and that: b) Arsenal’s brief threat mostly came on the counter-attack – neither scenario being likely when the Hornets take on Pep Guardiola’s side next Saturday.

No Premier League side allowed fewer shots than Watford in Gameweek 5 and in truth their backline had a quiet second 45 minutes as the two-goal deficit elicited a second-half siege from the hosts.

Flores said after full-time:

We had to care about the defence this week and we didn’t prepare to have 31 attempts at goal. It just happened. We just kept switching the play in the second half and this is how it happened. Sometimes this is possible.

While lone striker Andre Gray (£5.9m) and wide-right midfielder Will Hughes (£5.5m) struggled to make much of an impression in the 4-2-3-1 and were ultimately hooked early in the second half, two Watford attackers who caught the eye were Gerard Deulofeu (£6.2m) and Tom Cleverley (£4.9m).

Deulofeu being stationed on the left flank may be off-putting to some Fantasy managers given that he is an FPL forward but he was Watford’s biggest threat all afternoon, causing Maitland-Niles lots of problems and repeatedly cutting inside to fire off shots – a couple of which flashed narrowly wide of Bernd Leno‘s (£5.0m) goal.

While his assist for Cleverley’s strike was a fortuitous one – the former Everton and Barcelona man intercepting a farcical pass out from Sokratis (£5.0m) – Deulofeu deserved his first attacking return of the season and it will be interesting to monitor his displays for when Watford’s fixtures really ease up in Gameweek 10.

Cleverley is not a name we Fantasy managers have considered for a long, long time (if ever) but his performance on Sunday was eye-catching, particularly as he was stationed in an advanced number ten role and given that he is now available for less than £5.0m.

This isn’t merely a kneejerk response to him scoring a goal – the all-action, high-pressing Cleverley was a threat all afternoon, forcing Leno into an early save and having as many shots as the entire Arsenal team managed combined.

Todd Cantwell (£4.8m) remains the stand-out sub-£5.0m midfield option but having another attacking midfielder available in this price bracket would be a welcome prospect for those of us trying to scrimp in midfield; time will tell if Cleverley can replicate this display and indeed become a regular starter in his new manager’s team.

Flores has plenty of attack-minded options available to him, of course, and it was interesting to note that FPL midfielder Ismaila Sarr (£6.4m) was thrown on up front in the second half, with Roberto Pereyra (£5.8m) replacing Hughes on the right.

Troy Deeney (£6.3m) – scorer of 13 goals in Flores’ previous spell in charge – will surely have a big part to play when he returns in November but there was no sign of Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) in the matchday squad, with his absence so far unexplained.

In Deeney’s absence, it was Pereyra who stepped up from 12 yards to draw the scores level at 2-2 after David Luiz (£5.9m) had chopped the Argentina international to the floor.

After keeping a rare away clean sheet in Gameweek 1, Arsenal’s defence has reverted to type and is now looking as unappealing as ever from a Fantasy perspective.

Watford had 31 shots against Unai Emery’s side, the most the Gunners have allowed in a single game since Opta began collecting this data 16 years ago.

The north London outfit have now allowed more attempts on goal than any other Premier League club in 2019/20.

The blows were self-inflicted, too, with Luiz needlessly giving away a penalty and Sokratis gifting Watford possession in the Arsenal area to hand the Hornets a route back into the game.

These weren’t isolated incidents, with Matteo Guendouzi (£4.6m) twice very nearly costing his team goals with individual errors and Emery’s insistence on his side playing out from the back looking like Watford’s best chance of scoring.

When asked about the tactic, Emery said after full-time:

Yes, but after their goal, we tried once more and we broke their lines and we get into the attacking third with space. We didn’t achieve good chances in less moments we did that, but we need to repeat and we need also to have the capacity and to improve with being able to break when the teams want to press us like today.

For those with Aston Villa, Manchester United and Bournemouth attacking assets, there were plenty of encouraging signs ahead of their encounters with the Gunners over the coming three weeks.

There wasn’t much to crow about further forward but this was one of Ozil’s better away displays (faint praise), with the German – occupying the number ten role in a 4-4-2 diamond – ‘assisting the assister’ for Arsenal’s second goal having almost supplied a goal for Aubameyang shortly beforehand.

This wasn’t really a game to judge Dani Ceballos (£5.7m), given Arsenal’s loss of control in the second half.

The on-loan midfielder will perhaps come into his own when the Gunners boss possession (as they did in Gameweek 2 and as they will expect to do in many of their upcoming fixtures) but, after playing a key role in the opening goal and showing glimpses of promises in the first half, the Spaniard was a bystander and eventually replaced on the hour-mark.

Asked why he had substituted Ceballos, Emery replied:

But today it was very, very hot. We needed in the second half, some fresh players. We were struggling second half and I was thinking how we can improve with three players, fresh players, for give us more energy and give us also more capacity to be strong physically and tactically and also technically.

Pepe again failed to convince as a price-point rival to Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) although he had little opportunity to impress after the break and it is still too early to fully appraise his long-term merits as a premium midfielder.

Aubameyang, however, again proved how lethal he can be with precious little service and indeed how more dangerous he is when deployed centrally rather than out wide, as will presumably now be the case for the next month with Lacazette sidelined.

The Gabon international’s goals came from his only two proper chances of the afternoon and his impressive conversion rate is one of his many redeeming qualities going into Arsenal’s favourable run of fixtures from Gameweeks 6-16.

No FPL forward scored as many goals against non-big six sides as Aubameyang in 2018/19, while the Gabonese striker now has 12 goals to his name in his last dozen Premier League starts against all opposition.

    WC draft, thoughts on this?

    Pope/Button
    TAA/5.0/4.5/Soy/Lund
    Mane/Son/KDB/Mount/Hayden
    Auba/Abraham/Pukki

Main questions are is TAA worth it and is Auba over Kun good enough?

Why Unai says, but it's a good team, especially if you're chasing.

TAA definitely worth it. Could have been involved in 3 or so goals vs. Newcastle. Was unlucky.

5.0 mil defenders aren't all that so you could combine a couple of 4.6+'s perhaps.

I don't think Soyboy gets many CSs in the next few weeks, but Leicester are performing well from a defensive standpoint. (Still letting in those odd goals though!)

Yeah, it's on the plate but feel next GW may be a better time. Also I'd keep a fair few which is annoying. No doubt a number of price changes however.

There are so many mate. The ones I thought were key are no longer popular here but your premiums have to be 3 of:
          Auba
          Salah/Sterling/Aguero (I went salah)
Son or KDB (but not sure on him now)
TAA only defender worth having, Otamendi second despite conceding to one of the best attacks in the league
A few punts to keep it fun and interesting eg I went Dilva and a 3 way defender rotation. Didn't Work just yet but it gives me something to play with. Still believe Pepe will come good but didn’t get in myself.

Big decisions have to be made in dropping the big players. This week I was lucky as I made the right premium choices but it won’t be like that every week. Getting sterling in for salah soon if he starts scoring again

That's not how it works. Points has nothing to do with it. What matters is whether your team looks good for next week. The shock result for Man City has resulted in a lot of people having low scores this week.

      1. diesel001

Points has a lot to do with it. FPL is effectively about buying points.

FPL is a leader's game - it is harder to chase in FPL because of (i) as time goes by the pool of viable FPL players reduces (i.e. you know who is a nailed starter etc.) and (ii) price rises make it harder to get the good players and inevitably if you get off to a poor start you have a lower TV and you can't get as many good players.

The value of the first WC also reduces over time for the same effect above. As you get to around GW8 ish the information is so widely known that the informational edge is significantly reduced.

I reckon if by GW9/GW10 you are still doing crap in FPL then it will be very difficult for you to catch up and do well. You will need to hop on early to the new bandwagons (e.g. like Pogba when Ole took over or Vardy when Rodgers took over). That will come with risk that may not pay off.

There is always the anecdotal player who does well from a poor start. Like the smoker who has been smoking 20 a day for 70 years and is 90. But probability suggests that if you are not in the Top 200k by GW10 ish then the chance of you being in the Top 10k by GW38 is low.

You need to make sure you are in 'the pack' because although you can't win FPL at the beginning you can certainly lose it.

You're not helping your chase back in the ranks if you wildcard into a worse team. Wildcard doesn't automatically = rank boost. You can wildcard into a worse team. Hence why I said you need to look at whether your current team looks strong for next week and not chase last week's points.

Have never prioritized team value, yet finished with 105+ TV last season, thank you very much. When you focus of bringing in good players who will get points, your team value builds automatically.

Last year's FPL winner used his WC in GW16. You don't necessarily have to use it early. The informational edge may be reduced later, but you're still getting to make drastic changes in your team (perhaps during a big fixture shift) while the others will have to make do with 1-2 FT and hits.

It is not about 'chasing' TV. A higher TV is a consequence of a good start.

Your best chance of catching up is through using your WC. Maybe it is this GW, maybe it is GW7, but it likely has to be soon.

Currently 290 points is 700k OR. Top 10k is 340 pts = 50 pts difference. As time passes the gap between ranks increases. But the pts you score for a goal or assist doesn't increase as time passes so you are chasing an increasing gap with less time and needing more and more positive FPL actions compared to those ahead of you to catch up.

Is it impossible? No. But the probability of success decreases over time, which is why getting into the pack asap has to be a priority.

            1. Cok3y5murf
              • 7 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

Your best chance of catching up is through having a better team than your competition for the upcoming weeks, particularly in this instance, the immediate next week. That could be your current team. You shouldn't rate your current team based on points scored. You should base it on the most recent performances of the players you have through the eye test, otherwise, you're forever chasing last week's points.

This early in the season, a large part of the top 10k comprises of players who've used all their chips. These are not serious players. Check the current OR 1-5 and three of them have already used at least 3 chips. All five of them have a poor rank history as well. All these players will finish below you come end of the season.

What to do with 2FTs 0.3itb, thinking VVD&Greenwood > Barnes&Soyuncu, any other ideas?

    Current team

    Heaton(Button)
    VVD TAA Digne (Diop, Rico)
    Salah Sterling KDB Ceballos Cantwell
    Wilson Pukki (Greenwood)

    Thanks!

    Heaton

    VVD - Digne - Walker - Robbo

    Sterling - Salah - Mount - Dilva

    Pukki - Wilson

VVD downgrade to who, because i'm planning to get Son to Dilva??

    Thoughts on WC team below?

    Adrian / Button

    Digne / Tomori / Lowton / Lundstram / Rico

    Salah / Sterling / Pepe / Son / Mount

    Pukki / Abraham / Greenwood

    0.2 ITB

Would love Auba but can't see anyway to get him in. Appreciate Pepe is a punt

I rate Villa. Have two of their players and no plans of selling yet. Impressed vs Spurs, were the better team vs Bournemouth, and had a goal incorrectly ruled out vs Palace which would've otherwise been a draw. Good fixtures coming too.

How despondent are the Sterling owners?
I had him (c) for the last 2 weeks and my rank has tumbled as a result, the KDB fiasco obviously didn’t help and I am acutely aware of Pep roulette but £22.1 is a awful lot for a combined 19 points in 2 GW’s. What are your thoughts regarding “safer” investments?
Is it too early to turn my back on Sterling? Potentially looking at Auba’s Run of fixtures or even Son at KDB’s price point
      Any comments thoughts welcome

With discussions and comments on the site around the game changing due to more information for “casual players” impacting on tactics (e.g. being patient), do we need to adapt and be more aggressive with our tactics and transfers, or is patience still the way to go?

When you wildcard, do you look to use every available £ to make your starting XI the best they can possibly be, or do you think it's worth spending a few 0.1s to be able to have a rotatable bench.

We see £0.5m used quite a lot in the rotating GK position (Pope and Heaton being popular right now) but what about turning Haydens and Dendonckers into Cantwells?

Key player - Has to be Abraham doesn't it? Is he a premium asset available at mid price, and is he essential, or just one of many performing mid price strikers?

Team - Manchester City, was that a blip, or something more serious? Is a City triple up no longer desirable?

Key talking point would be regarding team structure - Would the scouts agree that that we have seen so far indicates that 3 up front has the greatest points potential? And within this structure, would they favour 3 players between 6.5 and 7.5m, or is there a case for a premium asset such as Vardy, Firmino, Aguero or Aubameyang?

Key player: Son a proven track record scoring 160 points over 2 000 minutes for 3 years now. Is he really a premium?
Playing a full season he will get 270 points; just about as good as the big hitters.
Now he is playing,is it not time to make him an essential and a captain pick to boot.
Being suspended, away on national duty and the dodgy start for Spurs it is understandable he has not been considered until now, but surely he and the likes of Auba KDB and Firmino can change the template landscape.

Key talking point - Is Norwich attack making defences look worse than what they really are? Remember Norwich scored 3 goals against Newcastle after which Newcastle kept a clean sheet next week. Now Norwich has made City defence look mediocre. This analysis is important to understand whether we need to move away from Mancity defenders or not.

May not be the right place to post but I’d be interested to hear in how scouts/people cope with not being able to watch highlights or live games for varying reasons. Personally, I have 2 kids under 2 & a hectic job so have not been able to watch even MOTD, so unable to use my own eye test. To compensate, I’ve found myself looking at stats when I can to judge transfers etc, which may help explain my pretty poor start. Keen to hear how folk cope after losing the eye test & whether I’m resigned to having a poor season because of this.

Hearing a lot of folks comparing Sterling with Salah for captaincy, but no one has mentioned the schedule. Both Liverpool and City play away in Italy and Ukraine, respectively, but Liverpool plays against Chelsea on Sunday, whereas City play against Watford on Saturday. Liverpool will have a 4-day turnaround time compared to City’s 2, not even accounting for travel.
Also, comparing big chances conceded, Chelsea have 10 compared to Watford’s 11. The difference in opposition might not be so great as we imagine. Does any of this sway your decisions?

This has been my thought on gw6 captaincy, especially as sterling looked a little jaded against Norwich. I'm looking for an alternative. This may be the week to gamble. No kneejerking though until after euro matches. Don't forget the deadline is Friday night this gw.

Too weak a defence on WC?

        Pope
        TAA Lowton Yoshida Lundstram Rico
        Sterling KDB Son Mount Cantwell
        Auba Abraham Pukki

Only need to play two of them (defenders) most weeks. Thoughts?
