Haller shows promise despite blank at Villa Park

The first goalless draw since the opening weekend of the Premier League season brought Gameweek 5 to a close on Monday night.

We run the rule over an underwhelming night for owners of attacking assets from Aston Villa and West Ham United.

Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham United

  • Bonus: Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) x3, Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) x2, Bjorn Engels (£4.5m) x1
  • Red card: Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m)

Despite Aston Villa spending a significant amount of money on attacking assets in the summer, goals look to be major problem for Dean Smith’s side at present.

Only Crystal Palace have scored fewer in the top flight this season, while the Villans lie second-bottom for shots in the box attempted and fourth-bottom for big chances created.

Save for one close-range header from Wesley (£6.0m) in the first half, their front three players against West Ham posed little meaningful threat.

Jota (£5.9m) and Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) disappointed on the wings, while Wesley looked very much like a cut-price version of the visitors’ Sebastien Haller (£7.5m) despite his best intentions.

Villa seem to be heavily reliant on the drive from John McGinn (£5.6m) and especially Jack Grealish (£6.0m) in central midfield but when Grealish has an off-day, Smith’s side struggle in an attacking sense.

Grealish was involved in the only two big chances of the game, whipping in a superb cross that Wesley headed over on 12 minutes and then failing to make significant contact on Douglas Luiz‘s (£4.6m) inviting ball as the game approached full-time.

The omnipresent Grealish was the momentum behind many of Villa’s attacks but his distribution was found wanting on Monday, with only 62% of his passes in the final third finding a teammate.

Speaking of the mid-price FPL midfielder after full-time, Smith said:

I thought he was OK tonight. I thought his final ball or final delivery wasn’t quite as good as what we expect of him but then again, he’s created a really big chance for Wesley.

They’ve all given a lot of effort, it’s just that quality was probably lacking from all of us in the last 20 [minutes] especially.

The tenacious McGinn had a better game alongside him and wasn’t afraid to chance his arm, whistling an effort narrowly wide of Lukasz Fabianski‘s (£5.0m) goal and then drawing a superb save from the Poland international on the stroke of half-time – although an offside flag would have ruled that strike out anyway thanks to Wesley’s inadvertent touch.

McGinn has become a semi-popular budget midfield asset because of his goal threat but it should be stressed how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box and therefore reliant on pinpoint accuracy from distance, although this is a downside that some owners will be able to live with considering his cost.

West Ham were simultaneously menacing and toothless, looking like the more dangerous side when they broke on the counter-attack but ultimately failing to muster more than one shot on target as moves broke down at the final pass.

What threat they did pose involved Haller, who despite the blank, showed enough promise to keep his owners relatively content.

Only a heroic Tyrone Mings (£4.6m) block prevented a likely goal in the 72nd minute but Haller had got the better of the Villa centre-half earlier in the game when narrowly nodding wide a Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) cross.

Haller’s link-up play was more accomplished than Wesley’s at the other end and his little lay-offs led to a handful of chances for his teammates, all of which were spurned.

The Hammers were reduced to ten men with a quarter of the game remaining when Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) was dismissed after collecting two bookings, with Manuel Pellegrini saying afterwards that he was confident about the ability of Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) – who wasn’t in the 18-man squad in Birmingham – to deputise for his suspended colleague in Gameweek 6:

Absolutely confident. I see Aaron working every day very hard, you must choose 11 players to start but I trust him the same as Masuaku. It is not a problem.

With both sides not looking overly secure on the flanks, it was left to the four centre-halves on show to do a lot of the eye-catching defensive work.

Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna (both £4.5m) now look very much the settled centre-back pairing for the Hammers, while Mings – who clashed with teammate El Ghazi in the first half – and Bjorn Engels (£4.5m) were solid again for Villa.

Engels walked away with a bonus point to supplement his clean sheet but had Mings not been booked for a foul on Haller, he would have secured two bonus points himself and would have pulled joint-level with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) as the second-highest-scoring FPL defender of 2019/20.

As it is, Mings and Engels are both in the top five Fantasy defenders for value for money this season based on points per million spent.

    Is Aurier an option?
    Attacking returns.
    Good Price.
    Will he get the minutes?

Showing a lot of commitment and they have a capability to stay in the game, so i think they have a chance but lack of goals could cost them, as i think too many draws could be their fate in relegation battle.

Cantwell and Cleverley are cheaper. Neves is the same price with IMO more accuracy from long range efforts. Iwobi is not a lot more expensive if you think Everton can get their offensive play together faster than Villa. McGinn is OK for the price but there are solid alternative options.

I'd probably go Cleverley over Huges to save 0.6 and then spend that on upgrading one of Kelly or Rico, neither of which are particularly attractive long term options.
Not sure about Ryan in goal, would rather have Heaton or Pop.
Argument to take Zinch out but I'd probably wait and then switch to Chilwell in a few games time

Only slight 'negative' is you have double Chelsea and double Norwich every week.

If one of both of those teams blank, your rank will suffer a fair bit.

Re-posting as I've written my life story and I would hate that to go to waste:

Wildcard activated, tear this apart for me please:
    Pope (Button)
    TAA Soy Mings Kiko Lund
    Salah Sterling KDB Son Cantwell
    Pukki Abraham (Brewster)

The one player I have the fear about is Auba and a few mini league rivals have him. Plan on doing Son + Brewster > Vardy +4.4 Mid when Leicester's fixtures turn in a few games (unless Son is on fire). I think Vardy for their fixture run could match Auba for theirs as although Laca is out it will probably only be for about 4 games and then you're back to the same Arsenal issues (and threat of rotation).

I've also gone light in defence but again have Soy for the fixture turn. Mings looking very solid for Villa and good goal threat. Pope with good fixture run. Kiko and Lund both posting reasonable stats in terms of attacking involvement and to be rotated for good fixtures. And just feel TAA is worth having all season.

Man City wise don't trust their defence without Laporte, and feel KDB and Sterling will prove the two to have long term, and with such good value up front with Pukki, Abraham, Haller, Barnes etc. funds are better spent in midfield.

    Thoughts?

      Reposting reply...

      just now
"Only 4 games" is not only, especially not with those fixtures. Vardy won't match Auba. No threat of rotation for Auba, when fit he will always play, full 90 min probably as well. You are just making excuses.

I know, I am doing the same with KDB :D.

The Auba version involves downgrading Salah and taking out KDB:

          Pope (Button)
          TAA Soy Engels (Lund Rico)
          Mane Sterling Son Cantwell (Dendoncker)
          Auba Abraham Pukki

So I guess it comes down to:
Auba Mane Engels Rico vs. Salah KDB Mings Kiko
Will Auba and Mane outscore Salah and KDB?

Frustrating to watch as he was very deep at times and while he was having a good game, his FPL value was poor. I think someone mentioned that he was averaging a high position on the pitch, but not in this game. My thinking is that i´ll keep for next three games, and then if nothing then i might swap him out. When you already have Mount, not overly keen on Ceballos, Maddison kind of the same type of player, and my gut feeling says he is perhaps better at home then away in FPL terms. United/Bou/Palace next three, is at least in terms of fixture kind of ok ish, compared to other 6m mid bracket options. And he does very well in the BPS system, so IF he gets returns he is very likely to get bonus points.

Yep no need to anything, or in other words, not easy to see what you can do with current set up. Rather save and gives you a more freedom to juggle next week.

I´m at 1.8m and no need to panic just yet. Still not much difference if you take a look at it in numbers, so i would not worry too much. Still a long way to go, and while a bad start is difficult, pointswise there´s not much in it. Try not to be too clever but also, take a look at your team, analyze fixtures, and take one or two choices you feel confident can be a diff to the larger part of players. For instance, this week i look at my team and see several choices i have to make. Do i play Lowton or Pope when i have Norwich attackers? Do i bench Adrian for Pope, shall i take calculated risk of playing my double Pool def and bench Mount? Do i take a chance on Arsenal´s great fixture vs Villa?

Neville claiming United don't have a spine is quite something. They've invested heavily, but have just bought the wrong players without having a systemic process in place. Surely it isn't hard for Neville to say the 4 players United have/had in those positions are just simply not good enough to compete for titles instead of portraying an image that they need investment, time etc.

    For context:

de Gea (£20m) was the second most expensive GK of all time at the time of signing.

Maguire (£85m) is the most expensive CB of all time.

Pogba (£89m) was the most expensive midfielder of all time at the time of signing.

Lukaku (£75m) was the most expensive striker of all time at the time of signing.

Quick question, would you WC this team this week?

    Ryan/Button
    TAA/Digne/WB/Lund/Rico
    Salah/Sterling/KDB/Mount/Lanzini
    Pukki/Barnes/Greenwood

      No, it's good.

I would save a FT then use 2FT next week to shift money from defence into midfield or attack.

    ACTIVE!

Would love some feedback on my WC team.

    Pope or Heaton? - Stek
    Digne - TAA - Aurier - Lund - Rico
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Mount - Cantwell
    Pukki - Abraham - GWood
    0.4 ITB

Aurier is a punt that could pay off if he can find some consistency, would prob look at Mings as an alternative.
    Cheers!

Fascinating test of Lampard coming up.

He seems to know his first choice set up in attack right now. But the CL isn’t the Europa and rotation would be a very mixed signal about Chelsea ambitions surely. But neither Mount nor Abraham got the Super Cup.

    I’m intrigued.

That's why I'm a bit hesitant on Mount/Abraham, this will probably be the first time they're going to play 2 high intense games a week. It's a good chance to assess how they do, and whether having one is just enough. I'm certain there will be some reduced minutes at the very least. Mount in particular looks like he tires quite quickly.

There's an argument that the European style is more of a natural fit for the old pros like Willian, Pedro and Giroud anyway. I don't think it'd reflect a lack of ambition to rest the youngsters.

Is the European game different to Liverpool in that respect? He rated them for the Super Cup after all.

Don’t think there’s any real doubt that he considers Tammy number 1 now.
