Haller shows promise despite blank at Villa Park

The first goalless draw since the opening weekend of the Premier League season brought Gameweek 5 to a close on Monday night.

We run the rule over an underwhelming night for owners of attacking assets from Aston Villa and West Ham United.

Aston Villa 0-0 West Ham United

  • Bonus: Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) x3, Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) x2, Bjorn Engels (£4.5m) x1
  • Red card: Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m)

Despite Aston Villa spending a significant amount of money on attacking assets in the summer, goals look to be major problem for Dean Smith’s side at present.

Only Crystal Palace have scored fewer in the top flight this season, while the Villans lie second-bottom for shots in the box attempted and fourth-bottom for big chances created.

Save for one close-range header from Wesley (£6.0m) in the first half, their front three players against West Ham posed little meaningful threat.

Jota (£5.9m) and Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) disappointed on the wings, while Wesley looked very much like a cut-price version of the visitors’ Sebastien Haller (£7.5m) despite his best intentions.

Villa seem to be heavily reliant on the drive from John McGinn (£5.6m) and especially Jack Grealish (£6.0m) in central midfield but when Grealish has an off-day, Smith’s side struggle in an attacking sense.

Grealish was involved in the only two big chances of the game, whipping in a superb cross that Wesley headed over on 12 minutes and then failing to make significant contact on Douglas Luiz‘s (£4.6m) inviting ball as the game approached full-time.

The omnipresent Grealish was the momentum behind many of Villa’s attacks but his distribution was found wanting on Monday, with only 62% of his passes in the final third finding a teammate.

Speaking of the mid-price FPL midfielder after full-time, Smith said:

I thought he was OK tonight. I thought his final ball or final delivery wasn’t quite as good as what we expect of him but then again, he’s created a really big chance for Wesley.

They’ve all given a lot of effort, it’s just that quality was probably lacking from all of us in the last 20 [minutes] especially.

The tenacious McGinn had a better game alongside him and wasn’t afraid to chance his arm, whistling an effort narrowly wide of Lukasz Fabianski‘s (£5.0m) goal and then drawing a superb save from the Poland international on the stroke of half-time – although an offside flag would have ruled that strike out anyway thanks to Wesley’s inadvertent touch.

McGinn has become a semi-popular budget midfield asset because of his goal threat but it should be stressed how many of his shots are coming from outside of the box and therefore reliant on pinpoint accuracy from distance, although this is a downside that some owners will be able to live with considering his cost.

West Ham were simultaneously menacing and toothless, looking like the more dangerous side when they broke on the counter-attack but ultimately failing to muster more than one shot on target as moves broke down at the final pass.

What threat they did pose involved Haller, who despite the blank, showed enough promise to keep his owners relatively content.

Only a heroic Tyrone Mings (£4.6m) block prevented a likely goal in the 72nd minute but Haller had got the better of the Villa centre-half earlier in the game when narrowly nodding wide a Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) cross.

Haller’s link-up play was more accomplished than Wesley’s at the other end and his little lay-offs led to a handful of chances for his teammates, all of which were spurned.

The Hammers were reduced to ten men with a quarter of the game remaining when Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) was dismissed after collecting two bookings, with Manuel Pellegrini saying afterwards that he was confident about the ability of Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) – who wasn’t in the 18-man squad in Birmingham – to deputise for his suspended colleague in Gameweek 6:

Absolutely confident. I see Aaron working every day very hard, you must choose 11 players to start but I trust him the same as Masuaku. It is not a problem.

With both sides not looking overly secure on the flanks, it was left to the four centre-halves on show to do a lot of the eye-catching defensive work.

Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna (both £4.5m) now look very much the settled centre-back pairing for the Hammers, while Mings – who clashed with teammate El Ghazi in the first half – and Bjorn Engels (£4.5m) were solid again for Villa.

Engels walked away with a bonus point to supplement his clean sheet but had Mings not been booked for a foul on Haller, he would have secured two bonus points himself and would have pulled joint-level with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) as the second-highest-scoring FPL defender of 2019/20.

As it is, Mings and Engels are both in the top five Fantasy defenders for value for money this season based on points per million spent.

        Really unsure.

TAA would be my one fixed point. Think I’d probs still hold Digne and lose the 5.5s. That leaves you with your choice of 4.5 pluses. Anyone’s guess there really

        Mings
        Fredericks
        Dunk
        Pierre’s etc

If Digne looks like regressing you can then hit a 5.5 and get cash itb for elsewhere. It may that Mendy looks a prospect too. Think City defence needs a couple more before committing

Young striker from BHA academy. Looked bright in preseason, and with Locadia and Andone gone, Maupay and Murray are his only competition. A good pick at the 4.5 bracket imo, although I feel Greenwood is better.

Some captain stats here if you’re interested and constantly getting it wrong.
    5x salah caps - 90 points
    5x mane caps - 80 points
    5x sterling caps- 78 points
    5x Kdb caps - 74 points
    Salah,salah,Sterling,sterling, sterling - 56 points

Maybe it’s just better to stick with a perma captain? Anyway, what’s your total for captain so far, I’m on 74, and no I didn’t captain kdb five times 😀

I mean it's all a fair amount of luck really week to week but better to be lucky at the start imo, things will start to converge over the next few weeks I imagine. So that early season luck could easily be difference between top 10k and top 1k finish. I would say hope the good luck continues, but know that means cantwell continuing to outscore sterling so I'm not sure I necessarily want that!

cantwell + Pukki bought in week 2 is the major reason for my rank. They are averaging 16.75 pts combined per game for me.

And Auba this past gw was major in the top 10k.

    Pope Button

    VVD Digne Zin Lund Kelly

    Salah Sterling KDB McGinn Cantwell
    Barnes Haller Pukki

    ITB 0.3m

    Any suggestions?

Feel like give KDB another game before considering Son. Also the top three want to give another gameweek. Aubameyang could come be considered but likely need Salah to Mane move. Abraham too but with Liverpool this weekend will wait a week. Digne out maybe?

Yep Tammy seems a straightforward move.

Mount feels like I missed the boat on with price rises already but tbf would feel more confident owning him compared to Tammy as not convinced he can keep up his scoring form.

Think he will score goals as they should creat chances but isn't his goals scored to shots taken ridiculously close?

The other option is to restructure team to accommodate Aubameyang. Would likely mean KDB to Martial when he's back.

Check the CL game, if Kun starts that then you may think Jesus gets the Watford game. Same for Sterling but to a lesser extent.

Is that worthwhile or just do a few staggered hits?

Liverpool conceded 4 times in 5 games, not bad is it? Problem is that they have that annoying habit of one pr game. But that is in my view a sign to come, cs will be aplenty in the next weeks.

I'd definitely wait a week on that one, no rush. Tbh if all these budget strikers keep delivering then team value should begin to matter a little less. I'm probably holding haller>Pukki off foolishly but Abraham has a tough fixture this week

    Morning all!

Another gameweek means we need a new Community Champion to represent us against the Scout Picks. The Scouts struggled last week with each defender and keeper scoring 2 each and the whole team struggling from a surprise Norwich performance, finishing on 43 points, tied with our champion! With so many premium options lurking, there's definitely strong potential to smash the scout picks and put yourself in a good position to win!

The Community Champion picks a team to go up against the Scout Picks, within a budget of 83m and in a playable FPL formation. Whichever Gameweek champion beats the Scout’s team by the largest margin will win a £100 Amazon Voucher!

If you're interested in applying, email Geoff (geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk) with your FFS username and FPL Team ID.

The Champion will be picked Thursday midday, so make sure to enter by then! The Champion then has until 11am Friday morning to send in their team.

    Good luck!

Had my worst ever week in FPL this week with 23 points. To make it even worse I had both Pukki and Cantwell on my bench. I ended up rage transferring out players while on the beer on Saturday for a -12.

    Robbo VVD Anderson Surridge OUT
    Soyuncu Tomori Son Abraham IN

Team now looks like this. Would love to hear your thoughts. 0.1 ITB

    Ederson
    TAA Digne Otamendi
    Son Sterling Pepe Ceballos
    Haller Pukki Abraham

    Subs: Cantwell, Soyuncu, Tomori

      Rough:

Some resistant defensive displays and a good performance Vs United by Palace meant (among other reasons) I didn't fancy Son to score big so switched to KDB Vs a depleted Norwich.

Didn't like the look of Diop in my starting team either, and was set to lose value on Trossard, so moved him out for Ceballos.

      Son (16) + Diop (6) to Ceballos (1) and KDB (1) for a 4 point hit - A lovely 24 point swing. Inspired.

      Smooth:

Knew City Vs Norwich would provide all my points. Sure, it wasn't meant to be Pukki but whatever works.

      Started rough but worked out:
7 out of 11 players blanked for me including a pva -2 and starting the week on a -4.

Luckily captained salah with Wilson, pukki and Heaton rescuing my gameweek.

Got in dilva and James for martial and trossard which was a total flop when I could have just played cantwell as I originally intended.

Rough: Been busy on Saturday on hearing that neither Emerson nor Martial will play I had 10 minutes for transfers. Panicked a little bit and transfered out Cantwell for Daniel James (for -4). Quite disastrous GW with gw rank of 4.5m and a fall from 3k overall to 35k.

Smooth: Out of Sterling and Aguero I decided right yet again on captaincy! This 8 pts swing helped a little bit (from utter humiliation...)

    22. THE SHEEP HUNTERS

      Rough.

l was quite confident punting on a Brighton clean sheet last week, so I doubled up with Ryan and *Montoya, who was, as I later discovered, residing in hospital with a throat infection (cough!).
Not to worry though, as for some strange set of circumstances, I also own Dunk, who would now auto transfer in. Everything was smelling of roses as the time crept into the second minute of overtime and.....well, you know the rest.!

Having touted the Hammer defence to do well against Villa, having previously snuffed out the Canary attack the week before, it turned out to be quite a prudent prediction as they played out a rather tawdry 0-0 draw. That is, unless you own the hapless Arthur "bloody" Masuaku like I do! who was cruelly sent off in the 67th minute, in what I thought was quite an innocuous challenge.

I'm not even going to mention my huge differential striker in the shape of big Oliver McBurnie, who scored a glorious goal for me against the Saints, only for VAR to chalk if off after five minutes of deliberation!

      Smooth

Brought in Aguero for a -12 who cancelled out those hits after playing the TC chip on him.

      Small margins this game! 🙂

Convinced my Mini League Rival to do the following transfers:

      Out: Mane and Pukki
In: James (ManU) and Aguero (-4)

      If he didn't do anything....
He would've gotten 32pts (Mane 15 (C) + Pukki 12) + 4 points (no hit) and two free transfers for this week.

So, after seeing his score today... He rage transferred Vardy and Maddison for Pukki and Mane!

Now I am 100% convinced that both Vardy and Maddison will score this gwk.

Next year, I won’t play. I won’t play ever again, after this season

53 points sounds ok, but 3.0m GW rank. Dropped to 499k.

Rough: KdB on the bench and subbing on denying me a Cantwell goal off the bench the main gripe for me this week. Jota blank felt sure he would get up and running v Chelsea. Liverpool conceding. Two pointers galore!

Smooth: Salah(c) was good as a non-Sterling owner I've been up on points v Sterling cappers two weeks running now. Kane assist, Pukki again, Robbo assist.

Smooth. I was rewarded for my patience with Robertson(!)
      Rough- absolutely everything else.

My team looked immense and I scraped 30 points. 25k to 300k.
Now I'm fighting the temptation to chase those points. Fundamentally, I still think my team looks great.

      All rough. 29(-4).

Hit was Robertson & Perez out, for KDB and Lowton. 7 points down the drain.

Benched Pukki to play 5 at the back (TAA, Digne, Zinchenko, Lowton, Lundstram for a total of 6 points).

Down to 2.6m OR from 760k, thanks to a 6.5m GW rank. “Rank” being the operative word.

      Rough
Played wildcard, went big expecting City to win 6-0 so got Aguero, Sterling and De Bruyne. 37 points all in, went from 100k to 850k in one week. Just disaster.

      Smooth
Kept Salah, so at least got his 9 points

Wow almost exactly the same here.

Bet big on MCI. Have to keep hold for Watford right?

My FPL weekend was a disaster - lost top spot in ML.

However as a Norwich season ticket holder of 35 plus years I've had one of the best weekends ever! What a night!!!! Nothing was gong to take the shine off of that and my voice is just about coming back to me.

      Only rough.

32 points on the WC. Bet big on the MCI player. Got all the 50/50 calls wrong. no Auba, no Son, no Abraham, no Pukki.

Haller blank, D. Silva differential went poorly. Barnes over Pukki. Had Mount, Abraham, Son, Auba all in my team at one point

      100k to 700K 🙁

      Rough

Played free hit and 22pts less than old team. Did it to get 3 man city attack and triple liv defence. Sold mane, pukki, heaton in process and 8,000 OR to 25,000 lol

      Smooth

      Aguero (c) instead of sterling

Wildcarded and think my starting 11 same as Joe's. So 5 points from 4 defenders, made worse by having Mings on bench who got that on his own. Sterling as Captain. Pukki Mount and Salah 30 between them but the rest got me 15 between them. Had Cantwell 3rd sub too.

Smooth: Firmino (8) and Cantwell (6) autosubs for Pulisic (missing in action) and Montoya (sickness) 😎

Rough: 32pts, doubled my OR to 3m. 😐 Hit the WC button this week, despite having 2FTs.

      Rough:
Gareth Mantle dropped from 1st to 2nd in the Fantasy Football Scout mini-league after leaving 35 points on the bench (Heaton 6, Pukki 12, Cantwell 6, Buendia 11).

Rough: captained KDB, Pukki and Cantwell on the bench, and 5 total points from my 4 defenders.

      Smooth: Abraham, Salah, and Mount.

Who's the best defender to get for a maximum of 5.0?
Already got Mings, got Pope as GK so not sure on Burnley double up.

Doesn't matter if it's just a one week punt, I'm interested in your opinion!

Quick question, would you WC this team this week?

    Ryan/Button
    TAA/Digne/WB/Lund/Rico
    Salah/Sterling/KDB/Mount/Lanzini
    Pukki/Barnes/Greenwood

I would really like to have Mane over Salah; lose: Digne, WB, Ryan, Lanzini, Barnes, possibly also Sterling, and include Son, one of Kun/Auba.

Auba, Son are essential. Points are on forwards now

Lol. How are they essential. Especially when you have alternatives like Pukki, Abraham, Firmino, Vardy, Haller upfront.. And Salah, Sterling, mane, KDB in mid. Good options.. But that word essential.. Lol

Essential as per their fixtures. Son and Auba's fixtures look juicy. And I believe you know the difference between essential and must have

Son captain this week is really calling to me. Sterling seems the logic one but I can’t ignore my feeling!
Sonny boy it is, can he get his first hatti for spurs?

Jan Vertonghen started the last two games. With him back, they kept a CS vs Palace. Rumours surfacing that he is once again fully into Spurs and is not moving, and is in talks for a new deal.

At 5.3m, is he a good pick on a WC? Sanchez has had a shocking season so far, and Foyth seems to be a RB now.

He should be nailed.. Offers no attacking threat though and this season attacking threat among defenders seems key.

Evidently Spurs contract negotiations with players leave much bitterness...from Danny Rose, Eriksen, and Vertonghen reactions during negotiations, it appears you would not want to be a quality footballer in Spurs books.
