Man United defence contains Vardy as Rashford scores penalty

Manchester United 1-0 Leicester

Goals: Marcus Rashford (£8.5m)

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Rashford x3, Victor Lindelöf x2 (£5.4m), David de Gea x2 (£5.6m)

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) was the key man for Manchester United as they recorded a much-needed win over Leicester City on Saturday.

The Red Devils had come into this meeting with tough opposition having taken two points from their last three and several absences.

Paul Pogba (£8.5m), Luke Shaw (£5.4m), Diogo Dalot (£4.9m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.4m) were among those out with injuries, while Anthony Martial (£7.6m) missed a second successive Premier League match.

That allowed Rashford to lead the line once again, having been pushed out wide by the Frenchman in the early part of the season, although his best threat proved to be from set-pieces.

Rashford won the game from the penalty spot in the first half

With Pogba not on the pitch, the England international scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, after Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.6m) brought him down.

Amid much debate over Manchester United’s penalties in recent weeks, both Pogba and Rashford each missing one, the centre-forward was happy to step up against Leicester, although the absence of his French colleague did make the decision that little bit easier.

After missing against Crystal Palace, Rashford went with placement as he rolled the ball into the bottom-right corner after sending Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) the wrong way.

“He’s been practising penalties and he can go both ways. He can go through the middle, he was calm and we’re going to get more of them, no doubt about it, because we’ve got players in the box with quick feet and, with VAR now, there’s no chance you’re not going to get them, even though we haven’t got every penalty we should have. Going forward, I think we’ll see him slot in a few more. Every striker misses a penalty. I’ve seen [Diego] Maradona and [Lionel] Messi do it. I’ve seen Platini against Brazil and Zico – my favourite player of all time – missed in the same game. You’ve just got to be confident enough to step up next time. What’s the worst that can happen?” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Rashford also had the chance to make it 2-0 in the second half as he curled a fantastic free-kick over the wall only to see it cannon back off the intersection of the crossbar and post.

However, there was not too much threat offered outside of Rashford and his set-piece capabilities in a game that featured very few chances at either end.

Harry Maguire (£5.5m) was the only other player who came close to scoring, but his header was aimed straight at former colleague Schmeichel.

Against Leicester, Daniel James did not offer as much threat as previous outings

Daniel James (£6.2m) had come into Gameweek 5 joint-top for shots inside the box among his colleagues but was not so effective against Leicester.

Across the 90 minutes, he was restricted to two efforts from range, neither of which were on target.

It feels harsh to hold it against James given that Manchester United were missing some key personnel from their midfield.

“It wasn’t our best performance by a long way. We were sloppy on the ball at times and we didn’t keep the ball in their half long enough.” – Harry Maguire

”We were a little bit sloppy on the ball, but we had to defend and today is probably the first time this season, apart from some parts of the first half against Chelsea, that we’ve had to defend deep against a team that was pushing us, but I never felt under any real, real pressure. They didn’t create too many big chances in that second half, even though they had the ball.“ – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Gameweek 6 pitches Manchester United against West Ham who may have kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time this season after a Monday night trip to Aston Villa, but who have yet to impress too much defensively.

If the Red Devils’ key players can return in time for that encounter, then we could see James back to his best. Meanwhile, a return for Martial could push Rashford back onto the flanks of attacking midfield.

Man United were boosted by Wan-Bissaka passing his fitness test to play

Despite not offering a huge deal going forward, Manchester United were praised for their defensive work against a Leicester side that had averaged 1.5 goals per game ahead of Gameweek 5.

They were handed a boost when the team news dropped at 2pm on Saturday as Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m), who had been considered an injury doubt, started the game at right-back.

However, the most impressive performers were Victor Lindelöf (£5.4m) and Scott McTominay (£5.0m) who did a great job of breaking up Leicester’s attacking play and limiting service to Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), the former earning two bonus points for his efforts.

“I thought McTominay was excellent. He lost the ball a few times, but you expect that because he’s still learning his role. He goes into tackles and he’s a leader. I wouldn’t want to go into a 50-50 with him! I thought he did excellent all day.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

There also appears to have been some progress for Maguire and Lindelöf as they continue to forge a central defensive partnership. The Englishman was credited for keeping Vardy under wraps while his Swedish counterpart was the man making the clearances and recoveries.

“You have to realise partnerships are built on playing games and we have only had five games. We will get better. I will understand him more and he will understand me more. There probably will be times when we can do better but we will continue to work hard on the training pitch and that is really important to build relationships around the pitch – not just me and Victor.” – Harry Maguire

That progress might be of interest to those still in possession of Manchester United defenders, or thinking about them. Many expected Leicester to find a breakthrough at Old Trafford but they were largely kept quiet.

There are certainly opportunities for further clean sheets in the next four Gameweeks, with next weekend’s trip to West Ham and the Gameweek 8 trip to Newcastle. However, managers should be aware that Manchester United do have to host Arsenal and Liverpool between now and Gameweek 9.

“We will improve and we will work hard to improve. It was important that we were solid defensively. They are a good team, and they move the ball around well, but I think we deserved the points in regards to chances created. It is really important, as a defence, to keep a clean sheet. At Old Trafford, we need to keep clean sheets to win games, like in the first game of the season [against Chelsea], if we keep a clean sheet, we win. We have enough talent in attacking areas to score goals. So, as a back four, as a team, we are really pleased with that.” – Harry Maguire

Leicester have struggled in the early part of matches this season

Meanwhile, this was a somewhat discouraging afternoon for those invested in Leicester assets.

The Foxes were plagued by a poor start to the game, in which Söyüncü gave away a penalty and, even though they grew into the game in the second half, it was hard for them to bounce back.

That was something that worried Jonny Evans (£5.0m) as conceding early on was something that caused big problems for former manager Claude Puel.

Last season, Leicester conceded 12 goals in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League matches, more than any other side, although this occurred less often once Brendan Rodgers came in and steadied the ship.

However, in the first five matches of the current campaign, the Foxes have let a goal in before the 15-minute mark three times. That is certainly discouraging for owners of their defensive assets, Söyüncü, who had a bad game, Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) and Schmeichel the most popular.

With Tottenham and Liverpool two of the next four opponents for Leicester, it probably seems best to avoid their defensive assets for now.

“We’ve got to start games better. It was similar against Chelsea and we came away and had a good second half and it was maybe a bit similar to Saturday without getting the equaliser. It’s something we need to address and have a bit more belief coming into the game and a bit more determination to start the game well.” – Jonny Evans

“We didn’t start the game well from the very first kick, from kick-off. Then, we gave away the cheap penalty and that sets you back. When you’re away from home in these big games, it’s not the ideal start, but we worked our way into it.” – Brendan Rodgers

Maddison was Leicester’s chief goal threat although Rodgers may have to tweak his position for Gameweek 6

James Maddison (£7.1m) was probably Leicester’s best chance of finding the net at Old Trafford as he fired off three efforts, only one landing on target.

However, his positioning could prove a problem that needs solving for Rodgers between now and Gameweek 6.

He has been deployed on the left flank of a 4-1-4-1 often this season, and we saw the same on Saturday. However, given that he has more used to a central role, Maddison often drifted inside and onto the right, leaving Ben Chilwell (£5.4m) alone on the left.

Maguire largely kept Vardy under wraps at Old Trafford

In situations where both players have pushed forward, Maddison into the middle/right and Chilwell up the left, they were exposed down that side of the pitch. In fact, it was in this area that Rashford was able to get one-on-one with Söyüncü and win the penalty. It will, therefore, be interesting to see if Maddison is pulled back into a central role against Spurs.

Meanwhile, the Foxes’ key man Vardy did not register a single shot on Saturday afternoon, largely kept under wraps by Maguire.

“No. It was full focus on the game. Obviously, playing against [Jamie Vardy], he is a top player and he has done it in the Premier League for numerous years. I know, on his day, he can terrorise defences. I have seen it playing for Leicester for the past few years. It was really important we got hold of him and vital to nullify him because he is a top player.” – Harry Maguire

Not at all - looking up until gw12, who would you captain Salah against? Sheffield United away maybe? (Son has SOU)

Villa away? (Sterling has SOU, Auba has WOL)

Liverpool have che, LEI, mun, TOT, MCY all coming in the next 7 weeks - which are not ideal and no plum fixtures at Anfield

        Hi Gotham,

Yeah i do fancy Son, but who would I drop for him?

If I bring in Aubameyang for Augero, i'd still like to have some City cover, I would get rid of KDB and bring in Son, but then I have no city cover other than in defence?

So i was thinking of leaving Kun up top and bringing in Son for KDB?

Captain this week? Listening to the podcast.

Interesting that those guys were saying that Sterling was the obvious pick last week. He wasn't really. Salah was clearly the safer pick to me. The whole argument was that Norwich defense is so bad that it overrides rotation risk and playing away, and I didn't see it.

This week, it looks pretty straightforward. Sterling, Aguero or KdB. I think Sterling makes his return this week. 2 dead weeks. Now is his time to deliver.

Anyone decided that next week looks good for wildcarding potentially? Granted I dawdled and missed a bunch of rises now anyway, but shipping the likes of Zinchenko, Digne seems preferable after this week and I want to see Tammy and Son against tougher defences. No doubt I'll regret it!

Got a few headaches I need to sort, any help appreciated:

Haller, tough fixtures coming up.. thinking of swapping him for Abraham, yes or no?

KDB, thinking of dropping him and bringing in Son, yes or no?

Aguero, will his minutes be limited soon, so maybe move to Auba? However then don't want to drop to Son as I have no city cover?

Haller is still a good pick - 5th highest xG, but I can see the appeal of the transfer to Abraham with his 'form' and upcoming fixtures.

KdB to Son is reckless imo.

Wait to see who plays mid-week for MCI. Aguero's output is probably the best right now.

Aurier was bought to compete with Trippier.

He is fast and strong (unlike trips) and actually more suited to RB for Pochs team.

He was a bit erratic when he first joined, but has been with the team for enough time now to know the system.

I think hes a great pick - he was good when he played for PSG before hand

What transfer(s) would you make? I have 0.5 in the bank and two free transers.

    Pope - Button

    AWB - TAA - Zinchenko - Digne - Lundstram

    Mane - Sterling - Mount - McGinn - Cantwell

    Aguero - Pukki - Wickham

I'm currently thinking about doing AWB to Boly and maybe Zinchenko to Otamendi depending on the UCL and EL games. My reasoning for Boly is that I can then get Diop/Masuaku for Lundstram (has terrible fixtures). WHU/WOL rotation is great. I think that this is the time for a cheap rotation pair because there isn't anyone standing out defenssively. What do you guys think about my thinking?

With a lack of clean sheets and some recent big performances from front-men, is it time that we angle our team structure to a 343?

Defenders seemingly been under-performing with clean sheets coming irregularly and unpredictably, though the total number is no different to last season (23 clean sheets in the first 5 gameweeks in both this season and last). With only Digne, TAA and Vestergaard making it into the top 30 highest scoring players so far, is it time to call it a day on a premium defence?

In contrast, there's a whole raft of forwards available in good form and the question has become who to buy rather than whether to buy. One possibility is to load up with 3 forwards in the 6.5m to 8m bracket with the likes of Pukki, Barnes, Abraham, Haller and Wilson all options. However, some managers may instead opt for a premium forward such as Auba or Aguero.

Bit of a two-parter this one, would be good to know your reasoning behind your opinions on the following:

Which formation are you looking at for your team?
How would you structure your ideal forward line?

I have wildcarded today on the basis on this. My double Liverpool defence has massively underwhelmed in the first 5 weeks and now they face possibly their trickiest run of games all season. One of Aguero or Auba looks very important during the next run and they can be flanked by 2 of the flavour-of-the-month mid-priced strikers quite easily.

I've ditched both Liverpool defenders, retained Digne, brought in some cheap defenders and left myself with

      Mane, KDB, Son, Mount, Cantwell
      Barnes, Auba, Pukki

My only real decision is whether I want Söyüncü and Barnes or find a 4.5 defender and Abraham. Abraham certainly can't keep scoring braces and will regress, however he looks very confident at the moment and Chelsea will score more goals than Burnley.

Yeah Abraham's fixtures are also a plus for me - if Giroud takes UCL games and leaves the league for Tammy, he could be a great way to get the full use of that fixture run. Equally though, Soyuncu could find some clean sheets with easier games, they've been fairly tight at the back. Tricky!

Like that front 8 - brave and different, can see it beating the current template.

Yeah I really want Söyüncü, however I'm quite happy with Barnes. The other option was Salah, Sterling & Tammy rather than Mane, KDB & Auba. With Lacazette out I think Auba will be great over the coming weeks though.

            Fair enough.

Both defenders capable of attacking returns, plus Everton have some good games, so selling either is risky - but the potential upside is good. Some Liverpool UCL rotation could make that decision a lot easier for you!

I would love to play with different formation (3-5-2 I'm looking at you) but from financial point of view it's always better to have cheap mid in a 3-4-3 cause they actually play games, Dendo, Cantwell, Hayden, Stevens etc.

4.5m forward simply don't play, think this is one of the things FPL should address, maybe raise cheapest mids price to 5.0 or something, they've started this price adjustments with goalies and some defs, not many options left at 4.5 at the start of this season, maybe next year they will address mids.

My 2 cents about cheap forwards is that I can't see them scoring more than 15 goals a season, it's my 6th year playing fpl and I can't remember anyone from this mid-bracket scoring more, thay have their purple patches here and there but reality catches with them pretty much always. With premium forwards you have this 22-30 goals season in them, plus better captaincy option.

Yeah very true about 352 - It's a formation I like but I usually avoid it due to no playing suitable 3rd forward.

It's true that cheaper forwards tend to be less consistent than the premiums, but isn't that the point? It's why they cost less. If multiple are on good form, I'm happy to hold them over that period with an eye on moving quickly off when things go south, perhaps to a 352 unless I'm in desperate need of that bench player.

The issue will always be a lack of flexibility though, something that Joe mentions frequently. 3 players in and around the same price bracket limits your ability to move up to a premium forward, but equally makes it a lot harder to find a replacement if (or when) they lose their form.

Vardy is an interesting one - could be a great shout with the upcoming fixture swing, but would you not prefer to use the money itb to upgrade to Auba? Sterling is the only player I'd be confident enough to captain there, KDB is always a rotation risk and (arguably) less explosive and Son is more of a captain pick for me only when he is on form.

I've kept faith with Vardy since GW1, feels wrong to ditch with impending fixture swing. I've considered the Vardy > Auba move. Decided to wait and see how Haller perfoms. I foolishly transferred Rash & Awb for Zinc and Haller. Last gw. Hurts more being man utd, shouldve kept the faith. Thanks for your input btw. Im always tempted by shiny new options like Tammy. I am on a Wildcard, and ATM for GW6 I am going for 3-4-3.

But going forward i have the flexibility of switching formations depending upon the fixtures . I can go 4-3-3 . I can go 3-5-2. No rigid formation as of now. I like having flexibility of changing formation

      My wc team

      Pope
      Lowton soyunchu dummet mings Otamendi
      Sterling Cantwell son mount KDB
      Aubameyang Abraham pukki

Gives me a variety of formations to go for.

I still believe both the Manchester clubs will keep cs. Also Spurs will also be there keeping cs. Infact, I would love to have verto at 5.3 . Seems bargain.

Does the Laporte and now Stones injury worry you about City's ability to keep CSs?

Not sure how nailed Vert is - Sanchez was playing pretty consistently ahead of him until this little knock, plus Sanchez is a good few years his minor. Might be looking at giving him more time, though he (Sanchez) didn't start the season to well tbf.

442 hasn't worked for me languishing around 1.8m even after using my wildcard.

Plan to sell VVD this week for Rico (if Wilson) or a 4.5m def (if Tammy) and upgrade Wickham to Wilson/Tammy (343) next week or maybe even this week for a hit.

I will still have premium defense after those transfers with TAA, Digne & AWB. So I might even look at getting more money out of that later.

I am definitely shifting towards 343 from 442. I also like 352, but right now budget/mid priced forwards are scoring more than mid priced mids. Plus a 4.5 mid fodder will actually play when needed.

On wc and already ditched Digne, Zinch, KWP and still undecided about TAA. Front 8 could be like this:
      Mane KDB Son Mount Catwell/4.4
      Auba/Kun Tammy Pukki

Rough - sold Kun and Pukki
Smooth - bought Tammy & Firmino & Mount with the cash

I think the big question for many aiming for this would be whether to drop Trent or Digne. I'm not too keen on dropping either just now but might be a bad move...

I started the season with 4 premium defenders (TAA, Robbo, Zinchenko and Coleman). The Alison injury followed up by watching Liverpool play Saints (Saints season ticket holder here) convinces me to WC after GW 2 and go cheap at the back and pump funds into my front eight. The Laporte injury reaffirmed my thinking. IMO Liverpool and City are the only reliable defences in the PL and both have been compromised. This game is about responding quickly to changes and I felt I made the right move. I have a front eight of Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount, Cantwell, Firmino, Rashford and Pukki. Since mr WC in GW 2 I have climbed 1m places so that I’m itself feels like justification. I do think it’s important to note however that premium defenders will come good. Once Allison and (eventually) Laporte return I will be moving funds back into their defences.

I started out as a big at the back, by two weeks time I’m likely on 343. Just have to be flexible.

Hold my hands up and say that I thought cheap forwards were the thing, just chose the wrong ones!

    Pope, Button
    TAA, Digne, Lund, Guilbert, Rico
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount, Lanzini)
    Pukki, Barnes, Greenwood

    1. Lanzini & Barnes > Cantwell & Wilson for free?

    2. Same two out + TAA > Aurier, Cantwell and Auba or Kane for a -4?

    Dilemma...

    1) Wilson, Sterling, TAA and Aurier
    Or
    2) Auba, KDB, Robertson and Söyüncü

    Who scores more?

Currently on the below but really want Auba into the end of the year

    Ryan, Button
    VVD, AWB, Zinchenko, Lundstram, Rico
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Cantwell, Dendoncker
    Abraham, King, Wood

Thoughts on VVD, AWB/Zinchenko and Wood to Lowton, Soyuncu (?) and Auba for -4? Leaves 0.7m ITB. Clearly makes my defence pretty weak but 1) I then have Salah, Sterling, KDB and Auba which I really like and 2) clean sheets seem a rare thing so far this season; midfielders and strikers are outscoring defenders so why invest in defence?!

Also, why is Charlie Taylor not playing? He was really good last year and is way better than Pieters!

Thoughts and comments very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Charlie Taylor had an injury to start the season and Dyche is loyal - wont drop players until he has a reason to.

Taylor is actually their number 1 LB, but hes waiting.

And good moves, id keep AWB and drop Zinc
