Djenepo scores on the road again as McGoldrick remains goalless

Sheffield United 0 Southampton 1

Goals: Moussa Djenepo (£5.4m)

Assists: Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m)

Bonus Points: Djenepo x3, Angus Gunn (£4.5m) x2, Maya Yoshida (£4.4m) x1

A brilliant individual goal by midfielder Moussa Djenepo (£5.4m) earned Southampton a second straight away win in a contentious game at Bramall Lane.

The summer signing from Standard Liege showed strength to hold off Sheffield United skipper Oliver Norwood (£5.0m) and skill to ghost past two more Blades players before finding the bottom corner of keeper Dean Henderson‘s (£4.5m) net with a smart finish.

Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m) was awarded the assist – his second in as many away appearances.

Djenepo now has two goals in as many away appearances for Southampton

It was, on the face of it, just reward for the Saints, who had seven shots on target to their hosts’ four.

But Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side rode their luck throughout, relying on a combination of VAR decisions and the home team’s wastefulness to secure all three points.

United went into the game with the league’s worst minutes per chance average of 10.1. That improved markedly to 5.7 against Southampton, which meant a busy afternoon for visiting keeper Angus Gunn (£4.5m).

Gunn is now joint-top for total score among goalkeepers

He pulled off four saves, including a vital stop with his legs to deny David McGoldrick (£5.5m) when the striker was clean through, to earn two bonus points.

Gunn now has 24 points for the season – joint top of the Fantasy Premier League goalkeeper standings – and has produced good returns for his 1.8% ownership for three straight Gameweeks.

Then again, he had to rely on VAR to keep a second consecutive away clean sheet.

McBurnie had his goal ruled out by VAR on Saturday

Oliver McBurnie (£5.9m) looked to have opened the scoring when he swept in Norwood’s free-kick at the back post.

But the delivery had initially been missed by John Egan (£4.5m) and replays showed that the defender was offside.

If that was VAR working as it should, a later decision to deny the Blades a penalty when the ball struck James Ward-Prowse‘s (£5.9m) hand in the area returned the system to its baffling worst.

Substitute Billy Sharp was sent off against Southampton

And just to compound the misery for United, substitute Billy Sharp (£5.8m) was given a straight red card for a challenge on Stuart Armstrong (£5.3m) that, unusually, looked considerably worse in realtime than it did in slow-motion.

Despite these perceived injustices, United mainly had themselves to blame for the defeat.

McGoldrick spurned two excellent chances to score, while midfielder John Fleck (£4.8m), recalled to the side in place of injury doubt Callum Robinson (£5.3m), was another to waste a couple of golden opportunities.

Manager Chris Wilder certainly felt his team had done enough to deserve more from the match.

“We want to win games and we have to open up, so for us to create 17 chances shows we’re playing in a way to try and win games of football. We will always do that.” – Chris Wilder

John Lundstram has now strung together three blanks in a row

While that suggests plenty more thrills and spills to come from the Blades, in Fantasy terms, it’s all about John Lundstram (£4.3m).

The defender continued his tempting run as a midfielder in Wilder’s starting XI; a fact that has prompted 23.8% of us to have him in our squads.

To put that figure in context, his ownership levels are more than double the rest of the United squad (10.6%) combined.

Lundstram, however, blanked for the fourth time in five starts and his upcoming schedule is hardly the stuff of which Fantasy dreams are made.

United will face Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester City over the next eight Gameweeks, and those managers who bought into Lundstram’s out-of-position goodness at £4.0m might well wish to cash in while he remains at £4.3m.

Che Adams has been hugely wasteful with his chance so far this season

Finding such value in Southampton’s side has been less easy to come by.

Striker Che Adams (£5.8m) was unlucky not to score his first Premier League goal, hitting the post with one sweetly-struck effort and forcing a fine save from Henderson with a header.

But in the continued absence of key man Nathan Redmond (£6.3m) with an ankle injury, Saints’ attacking assets aren’t exactly clamouring for our attention.

Djenepo’s two goals this season have showcased both his skill and his eye for the spectacular. Whether he can deliver consistency as well remains to be seen.

At the back, Hassenhuttl’s decision to ditch his standard back four might open up some budget potential.

“We had a different shape today again so it’s very interesting to see how quick the guys do what we tell them. I think maybe we surprised them a little bit with the back five in the first-half.” – Ralph Hassenhuttl.

Southampton have now kept two clean sheets in their last two away matches

The switch led to a recall for centre-half Maya Yoshida (£4.4m), the veteran earning a bonus point from his first clean sheet of the season.

Should he retain his place, Yoshida’s knock-down price is certainly more attractive than the side’s most popular defensive pick, the 4.1%-owned Jannik Vestergaard (£5.1m).

Much like the Blades, however, Southampton’s schedule is none too tempting.

The Saints have back-to-back matches with Spurs and Chelsea before the next international break, and trips to Man City and Arsenal before the end of November.

Both sides have well-priced players offering points potential.

But based on their upcoming fixtures, that potential might only warrant serious consideration in a couple of months’ time.

Pukki owner, and dare I say it, but is Norwich's run about to slow down?

They seem more like a home team and most of their upcoming games are away from home. Away to West Ham, we expected a goal-fest, and they achieved nothing. Facing some decent teams too. Aston Villa the only home fixture, but while Villa were toothless in attack last night, they were pretty solid and composed in defence.

They have played 2 away premier league games. One against Liverpool. Feels like you are looking for reasons to move Pukki on (you want Abraham?)

We can speculate but I will believe it when I see it. Cantwell and Pukki are both going to be starting for me indefinetly.
In the WHam game they just double marked Pukki didnt they, and Cantwell really should have scored.

If theyd lost to West ham and then gotten smashed by City I'd understand your logic a bit. They just beat man City though..thats the opposite of slowing down. If any thing it could be that they are now hitting their stride

I remember having similar thoughts about Jimenez last year, but he kept on delivering.

I think it would be a brave man who got rid of Pukki at the moment. I'd expect returns to slow a little, but not enough to make me jump ship entirely.

He's one of those players: main man in an attacking team. The team may struggle a bit, but he's unlikely to suffer hugely.

I want to have Abraham into my team by selling Robertson and Greenwood:

    Robertson + Greenwood -> Mr X + Abraham

Who should be Mr X (max price of 5.0 million)?

    a. Kelly, just rotate the cheap defenders, Kelly, Lundstram and Rico
    b. Aurier and hope he will get some game time at the Spurs defense - and if not Lundstram and Roci are there as backup
    c. Other suggestions

    Heaton
    TAA, Digne, Robertson*
    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Cantwell

    4.0, Hayden, Lundstram, Rico

    Evening all...

I'd like to get Aubameyang into my team in place of Rashford, and ideally Abraham in too, in place of Greenwood. I can do this by getting rid of Salah ahead of his less-than-ideal run of fixtures.

Leaving aside the wisdom of that trade-off, what's the best way of doing it?

    (a) Rashford, Salah & Greenwood -> Auba, Abraham & [7.8 mid, maybe Siggy?] (-8 points)

    (b) Forget Abraham for now. Rashford & Salah -> Auba & KDB (-4)

    (c) Wildcard the team below... realistically only "need" to change 5 players, so maybe a waste?

    Pope, Button
    TAA, Digne, Schar, Montoya, Lundstrum
    Salah, Sterling, James, Son, Dendo
    Rashford, Greenwood, Pukki

Desperately trying to save it this year...

If I used it, I'd be moving Schar, Montoya, Salah, Rashford, Greenwood... maybe James, but tempted to leave him in place for a bit.

5-6 transfers... right on the cusp of whether it's worth a wildcard!

What transfer(s) would you make? I have 0.5 in the bank and two free transers.

    Pope - Button

    AWB - TAA - Zinchenko - Digne - Lundstram

    Mane - Sterling - Mount - McGinn - Cantwell

    Aguero - Pukki - Wickham

I'm currently thinking about doing AWB to Boly and maybe Zinchenko to Otamendi depending on the UCL and EL games. My reasoning for Boly is that I can then get Diop/Masuaku for Lundstram (has terrible fixtures). WHU/WOL rotation is great. I think that this is the time for a cheap rotation pair because there isn't anyone standing out defenssively. What do you guys think about my thinking?

I think Wolves are going to have a rough time of it for a bit...

You have the same issue as me which is that Pope in all the time makes a Burnley defender a less attractive option.

How about McGinn to Ceballos and save the other transfer?

Not sold on Ceballos because I don't think that he is nailed and they also have EL games. Ceballos is basically high risk/high reward and McGinn is the safe option.

They definitely started very shaky, but I think they've looked a lot better since the Arsenal game. None of the defences are delivering, but at this moment, I think Pool look the best of a bad bunch. Newcastle scored from their only shot on target. Would've been a different story here if that hadn't happened.

Would need to be 3 in 3 or 4 in 5. People will still look at the overall figure: 3 in 5 would be 4 in 10 overall. 2 in 2 would be 3 in 7. I think people want them to look like they can achieve 50% clean sheets again.

      Make sense?

Yep makes sense. But two in the next three plus whatever attacking returns they get might get them three of.thr top five defender spots. Think people focus more on points ranking than cs ratio but definitely see what you mean.

As this suggests though, it would be contingent on not many other defences performing well. If burnley or soton, say, also kept a few people will just go there I guess.

        Thanks.

If you consider pool to keep cs, you surely must consider city to keep cs.

They have easier fixtures. They keep most of the possession. Not every team attacks like Norwich

I could see city keeping some. Vvd makes a big difference though. I also don't rate the attacking potential of any of the city d which makes bonus a challenge.

How big of a hit would you want to make in order to use your wildcard?

I'm thinking of making a few changes to my team and I'm in two minds whether to use my WC to do so. In an ideal world, transferring in the players that I want will result in a -16....I'm just not sure in my head whether this is WC worthy or not!

I think people get too focussed on how many changes are needed to justify a wc. For me there is only like 3/4 changes I wanted/needed.
Wanted Son, Wanted KDB and Digne. That was enough to warrant it for me. And besides there is some good players I have and dont want to lose like Wilson. So the spine of my team hasnt been totally ripped out, its just a better version of the team that has been doing well for me.

-12 is where I would start thinking about playing it

Minus 16 is right on the borderline for me.

Can you stagger it over two weeks and make it a minus 12?

The other thing I'd look at is if, aside from the minus sixteen changes, are there small things you'd also change on wc (subs basically). If not then I'd try to stagger it over two weeks, if there are then I'd probably hit wc.

The tricky thing is there are different levels of changes... there's the big ones you want to make, and the little, boring ones like getting a better 4th/5th defender and so on. Sometimes the latter can be as important as the former.

I think the other thing is that now we have two, there's not really an obvious strategic point to play the first half of the season wildcard. Which pushes you (well, me anyway) towards playing it early.

For me I try to keep it to set up for the rotation filled Christmas schedule if possible. But obviously I need to cover early price rises with hits to enable that.

Those on wc this week or prospective wildcards - are you likely to ignore/remove city defence now? (due to injuries)

It's hard for people this week. Pep might get dinho in there and sure it right up so I'd want to see another couple of weeks. If I was on this week, I'd probably go without. Someone could well be getting dropped.

I'm holding off my wc for one more week unless CL changes anything - but I'd be inclined to avoid.
