Scoutcast and Champions League combine for Tuesday night double-up

Joe is joined by David and Karam for the latest episode of the Scoutcast tonight.

You can watch it on our YouTube channel from 8pm BST to 9pm BST.

This episode overlaps with the return of European football to our screens.

Liverpool and Chelsea take on Napoli and Valencia respectively as the Champions League group stages get underway on Tuesday night.

We will have Scout Notes on those matches on Wednesday, but for now, there’s a brand new episode of the Scoutcast to occupy your attention.

On tonight’s agenda are the best cheap defenders now that the premium ones have frustrated their owners.

We’ll also discuss how best to cover Manchester City in the wake of their surprise defeat at Norwich.

Finally, we’ll debate how to recover from a poor start to the season as many managers have endured a tough few weeks.

      Mount is probably injured.

You have the same 5 defenders so there's something wrong.
Too much fodder for a WC.

Guys. If you had to drop one for the next 5-6 GWS who would it be? Currently have 4 hitters (Salah Sterling Auba and KDB). I'm debating on whether to go with only one big hitter at the back and downgrade Ota OR get rid of one of the lads below. TIA

    A) Salah (no other LIV attacker but have TAA)
    B) Sterling (Have KDB)

TBH i've never rated him that highly until this season. ARS are way more attacking and the the fixtures are looking really good but yeah it is Arsenal. Pepe could definitely be a good alternative once he gets going. Not keen at all Zico?

How have city found them selves with only 1 fit centreback - surely this is a case of Pep asking for players & not getting them, rather than being so careless as to go into a 70 game season with 3 players for 2 positions?

I know they missed Maguire, but there were. Many others who could’ve been signed, Skrinijar, Koulialby, even just a 34 y/o journeyman Kompany replacement who could do a job for a year as 4th choice....

Wouldn’t be suprised if this was some sort of internal disagreement & Pep starts to hunk about his next job

Not sure if it's true but read somewhere that city have hit the homegrown limit now that Jesus is over 21. He took Kompany's slot. Might be why they held off this season

Still shockingly bad plannning though, no? As in they’ve let themselves get into a positive where they have far too thin a squad in an incredibly important position

All they needed to do was sell a non-homegrown - instead they have possibly wrecked their season

Fernandinho was always earmarked for centre back cover this year plus if needed they have a couple of younger lads than can slot in.

They do have state of the art academy with some great young defenders for sure. But Fernandinho is ahead in pecking order. We know Kyle walker can slot into the centre too with Cancelo coming in at right back.

Their playing with a centre (attacking) midfielder at left back and he’s doing a satisfactory job. So Pep finds a way.

Don’t worry City will be just fine. Norwich just gave them a smack on the jaw.

Yeah I was thinking about Fernandinho & Walker, but kept coming to the fact that there’s a big difference between a recognised centrehalf (who can play in a two) and Fernandinho or Walker though, and cancelo played 5 positions in 23 starts for Juve last year but CB wasn’t one of them

The fact that he’s always had a pathological aversion to partnering Stones & Ota (even before Ota arrived he only started them in 20 of a possible 60 games - after Laporte arrived it was 3 out of 52) makes it even weirder in that he was always a Laporte injury away from being back to pairing those two

Will be interesting to see how they fare for sure but alarm bells must be ringing internally at city

Should have tried Gary Cahill. None of the CBs he has, bar Laporte, are very good defenders. Just half decent defenders who can play ball. That's his philosophy and for me means he'll never win a CL with City.

The more I think about it the more it baffles me - can’t believe Pep would be that complacent, he’s not stupid surely - there must be more than meets the eye here, fernandinho’s conversion not withstanding

Maybe there’s a wonder kid centreback coming by up from the youth team or something?

Truly bizarre situation that seems very contradictory for a club with the ambitions and resources of city, and a normally meticulous perfectionist manager like Pep

Stones injury looks a blessing in disguise.
Sure - Alarm bells when their best centre back / defender Laporte gets injured. It was his own fault through- shocking challenges and no sympathy.

They are back a bit to square one when they initially brought him over from Bilbao.
They were so desperate for the need to get him in when he signed. It was a major piece of business.

Alisson and Laporte injuries might level the playing field slightly and as neutral I am happy as an FPL owners I focus on the Sterling’s, Salah’s, Mane’s, KDB’s and Aguero’s.
Wildcarding For GW6 so I’m moving on VVD and Zinchenko most likely.

The Allison injury is a possible leveller allright, but Liverpool seem to be coping much better with it from a points perspective than City are with laporte’s injury

As shaky as stones can be, I’m not sure it can really be a blessing in disguise when they have no recognised CB to cover him though

On the plus side their fixtures are decent... but a severely depleted Norwich side looked like a decent fixture on paper ... shakthar will be interesting tonight

This next month or two will be a great test of pep’s skills, they’ll just have to hope to try to maintain the 5 point gap, or at least not let it get much bigger until Laporte returns and/or they can sell a non-homegrown & sign a centrehalf in January

Don’t see it’s any different really than starting season with 2 cfs and someone else who can fit in there. United in the exact same boat and one of two other clubs as well.

Pep is a perfectionist and wouldn’t sign a dud to make up numbers. His record in signing winners every time is remarkable. And I don’t see it’s easy peasy for City to sign someone as United have discovered - prices sky rocket when the seller smells the blood of a big club actually needing someone.

I think the difference is that’s 2 players for a single position - with Sterling who has also played CF (and its still *a bit* on the thin side)

The equivalent would be a bare minimum of 4 recognised centre backs (who can play CB in a back 4) with the makeshift centreback of Fernandinho as 5th choice, don’t think Walker has ever played CB in a back 4 in his entire career!

Yep so effectively rules out Walker while they only have one fit centrehalf to partner him

Unless they tried a back 3 with Walker Ota Fernandinho, which really wouldn’t fill anyone with confidence surely lots of potential for mistakes there

When it comes down to it it’s 2 injuries from a crisis in both cases so exactly parallel.

There’s a parallel with Liverpool going into the season without a full set of keepers and last year loaning our Clyne just before he got injured. Sometimes gambles are made. Lots of times we don’t see it because they CK e off.

Fern and Walker are hardly terrible options. Then I’d put money on City having a decent youth player. Back in the day all teams would simply promote a under 21 in this situation.

AWB would still be unknown if Joel Ward not got injured as Palace’s sole RB 🙂

And a 16 year old Gary Naysmith too if Hearts hadn’t got 4 defenders sent off v Rangers and suspended from a league cup tie v Celtic.
Some good years at Everton eventually came.

It’s actually three injuries from crisis for the CF slot though with Sterling - whereas its two injuries from crisis with centreback though- so whilst they are *a bit* thin up front, it’s not the same parallel with their centre back cover?

Walker isn’t an option at all in a back 4 too - he’s never played CB there in his entire career! 34yo DM Fern is surely total stopgap CB territory - an acceptable 5th or 6th choice, but as a 4th choice CB they’re always two injuries away from him having to play an extended amount of games...

That’s why I was kind of thinking maybe there is a youth team prospect there somewhere who might be able to slot in. It’ll be the first we’ve heard of them though!

Not stupid, but doesn't like to vary from his thinking that ball should be played out from the back. He needs someone like Declan Rice who can defend but also play a bit and could lead that line. You mentioned Walker there. A wing back, poor defender, part of the problem. In CL they were undone two years by Pool and Spurs because they could not defend. Pep needs a plan B where they don't rely on keep ball but can sit and absorb pressure. Good defensive mids aren't enough for that. But I can't see Pep resorting to even having a defensive plan B even if Norwich can beat them.

I don’t know if I’d be hyper critical of their actual playing style tbf - the amount they’ve won kind of exonerates them there - and they were only a debatable VAR call away from the CL final last year

There have been rumblings for some time now though that Pep may not view Walker as positively as he once did. Which just puts Walker in the same bucket as Ota & Mendy as a player who he may not have total confidence in...

But I would be hyper critical of their summer transfer window now with the superpower of 20:20 hindsight - three recognised CB’s is crazy thin squad coverage - reckless even - or an internal dispute which Pep didn’t win

A VAR Call away from CL final is one hell of a statement and a false one too.
A VAR call away from CL semi final might be more fitting and accurate.

Totally get what your saying and the angle you are coming at but really I’ll leave you to it.

Fair enough, no guarantees they’d have won the semi, but it’s difficult to be hyper critical of any team for not winning a cup, there’s so much luck involved and the best team doesn’t always win a cup

Their league performances since Pep arrived do justify his style imo & wouldn’t really jump out a team me as requiring significant change

But the transfer window just looks shoddy though to come out of it with 3 recognised CB’s who can play in a back 4 ahead of a possible 70 game season is bananas

Really thinking your overstating. They have options.

It woikd have been a mistake too to spend 50 million on a player who was not up to scratch. And well 50 million means someone without PL experience - an internal transfer would be 75 mill.

A sub quality player takes years to wash out of the system. And well 50 million is still a lot of money.

50 million is a very arbitrary number though - and a 4th centre half doesn't have to be a world beater to be better than Fernandinho tbf - even at 50mil, 60mil, 100mil - its all just a couple of barrels of oil to man city anyways

Signing a centre half surely would have been the lesser of two evils - they're unfortunately now in the 'greater of two evils' territory of playing a 34 yo DM as centre half for weeks alongside a player who Pep's dejection decisions over the last 110 games indicate its definitely not high in his estimation

It's looks a serious situation, with potentially significant title implications - very interested to observe this unfold over the next 10-15 games in all competitions

They won the league a few times because they have a bottomless pit of money.

Allegedly Alderweireld was available this summer, though maybe Spurs wouldn't sell to City. Make no mistake at the other end, Aguero will be nearly impossible to replace. The best temperament of any PL striker, his finish v QPR the best ever in PL. Sterling has improved no end but I wouldn't back him to score one on one to win the league.

City looked in trouble at Christmas lay head when they went 7 points behind Liverpool & were in poor form, but managed to wrestle things back so they can definitely deal with adversity - but that was with Laporte, Kompany Ota stones all pretty much available...

This situation could be different gravy if that 5 point gap starts to grow...

Also found that one strange, but as one mentions further down it might have to do with homegrown rules. Rodri been piss poor in midfield so might also be an option as CB. Kompany i think is a bit like Koscielny, all the injuries have taken it´s toll. Playing in less physical leagues is often the solution. Garcia is 18, but from what i´ve seen not much behind Stones and Ota-)

Wonder if the problems they have at CB also will affect them at the other end, Laporte have been important in the way they play out from the back.

Yep the HG quota may be a factor, but it would still indicate piss poor planning as it wasn't new information - they would have been aware of this months prior to the end of the season - more than enough time to ensure they had a squad for for purpose (purpose being league, champs lge, FA Cup, league Cup etc)

A chain is only a string as its weakest link after all & it looks like they've been exposed as having a fairly weak link from a squad depth perspective in two key positions!

I took a -4 to have this team, worth wildcarding it instead now with Mount likely out?

Hi DZ, another fine evening on the forum.

WC is currently active and my latest food for thought is:
With a front 3 (Abraham-Pukki-Haller) I've also got Cantwell as my 5th mid. But should I bother buying him if I'll never play him? Would anyone consider buying him as a 4th mid?
Also, anyone have any thoughts on Tomori's game time? Not convinced I have space for both him and Soyuncu, but he's just so tempting with the premium def being lack luster atm.

        Pope - McGovern
        TAA - Soyuncu - Digne - Lundstram - Rico
        Mane - Stirling - KDB - Cantwell - Mount*
        Abraham - Pukki - Haller

I'm aware I now need to reconsider Mount. Just unsure on a replace atm.

If Sterling gets 90 mins tonight.

Good question. I really have no problem with dropping him for Aguero. But again, the lack of mid-priced midfield options restrict that I feel.

Like Buendia from preseason but Cantwell offers the same apparently for less

I’d forget Wilf. He’s due a pen I suppose but needs a frontman alongside to give value.

Not great fixtures but I’d go Tielemans prolly

I’d lose one Liverpool or at the very least turn one into TAA. That just looks all wrong back there.

If you took VVD down to 4.5 then you could go lots of interesting places with Greenwood. My choice would be Wilson but you blocked that by hanging onto King

That leaves you with a decent enough 3-4-3

    Zaha place holder for Mount.

      Quite like that

Zaha is a misstep I believe. (Palace fan). My putative non- WC front 7 for GW7 is

      KdB Mane Son Martial (Cantwell)
      Abraham/Wilson Pukki Haller

Abraham Wilson or Haller becomes Vardy in 9 from losing one of my premium defenders (still going minimum 5.5 back there)

Thinking of saving transfer this week in readiness for

Sterling and Greenwood to Auba and 6.9 mid GW8.

    Anyone else thinking the same?

Now that mount is injured ( think he will definitely miss Liverpool game) , the options to replace him are so slim below 6.5
