Spot the Differential

Appealing fixtures could finally unlock Pépé potential

At this early stage of the season, differential options continue to prove their importance to Fantasy Premier League managers.

10 of the 13 highest scorers in Gameweek 5 had ownership of 10% or less, which shows us that there are some still gems flying under the radar or simply being overlooked.

Son Heung-min (£9.6m) did us proud with a brace against Crystal Palace to become the latest differential to graduate from the 5% or below club.

Here are three more under that ownership threshold worth considering for Gameweek 6.

Nicolas Pépé

Pépé became the first player to dribble past van Dijk this season

Price: £9.4m

Ownership: 3.6%

GW6 Opponent: Aston Villa (home)

Nicolas Pépé (£9.4m) may not have hit the ground running since joining Arsenal as their record signing, but he has certainly shown some potential.

Starting from the bench in the first two games of 2019/20, and facing two of last season’s top four was always going to be a difficult start.

However, we know Pépé is a player who possesses quality and it’s only a matter of time before he delivers a match-winning performance.

During the last four Gameweeks, for players priced at £9.5m or below, the midfielder is top for final third touches (130) and ranks best for successful take-ons (19) too.

This indicates that he’s certainly been doing the right things on the pitch and in some ways may have been unlucky not to pick up more attacking Fantasy returns.

I think that could change on Sunday. Of course, Aston Villa kept clean sheets in both their last two matches but these were both at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have won two in a row now, and there was an assist for Pépé on Thursday night, so this could be the perfect opportunity for him to make his mark.

Neal Maupay

Neal Maupay already has two goals Premier League goals to his name ahead of a trip to Newcastle

Price: £6.0m

Ownership: 0.6%

GW6 Opponent: Newcastle United (away)

Despite only scoring two league goals in their last four games it’s clear that Brighton’s style has taken a more attacking return under Graham Potter.

Of course, it takes time to transition from one manager to another and it may be why some of Brighton’s results so far have been inconsistent.

But an early stand out player for them is their newest signing, Neal Maupay (£6.0m).

Starting from the bench he scored a goal on his debut as Brighton overran Watford in Gameweek 1. Since then Maypay has gradually played more minutes, helped by Florin Andone and Jurgen Locadia’s departures, which culminated with him adding another goal to his tally last weekend.

For forwards priced at £6.0m or less, he has registered the most number of goal attempts (10) which is all the more remarkable when considering that he’s only played 273 minutes of football from a maximum of 450.

It almost feels like he’s a bandwagon waiting to happen. Brighton’s match against Newcastle this weekend could help expose Maupay to the masses.

It would be unfair of us to expect him to score a hat-trick against the Magpies like Pukki, but both players scored over 20 goals in the Championship last season.

Maupay should get a fourth consecutive start this weekend and if he does he should be more than capable of causing havoc to Newcastle United’s fragile backline.

Emi Buendía

Buendía has snuck under the Fantasy radar so far this season

Price: £6.0m

Ownership: 1.5%

GW6 Opponent: Burnley (away)

If you’ve scanned over some of the emerging template teams that have come to fore you would have almost certainly seen Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell in most of them.

But there’s another Norwich City player that needs to be recognised from a Fantasy football perspective and that’s midfielder Emi Buendía (£6.0m).

It’s surprising to think that his percentage ownership has yet to hit double digits. After all, he has quietly amassed four assists in his first five games.

Also of note, it’s very rare for another Argentinian to score more FPL points than Sergio Aguero in the same match and that’s exactly what he did in Gameweek 5. This is no mean feat.

Buendia’s attacking involvement has been far from understated in Norwich’s opening matches.

For midfielders priced at £6.0m or less, he is ranked third for final third touches and first for overall touches in the opponent’s half.

His lack of goals may be a slight cause for concern, especially compared to Cantwell. But does that even matter if he can be a regular provider of goals for his colleagues?

The Canaries next game is against Burnley who have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four matches.

Any resson why sterling will be benched?

    - 5 pts behind liverpool. need to play your strongest xi to make sure you dont drop points.

(crucial game in title race as i dont think liverpool will blow another 7 pts lead if city draw)

    - Young and its only early season. so fatigue wont be problem

    - Sane out means Sterling is vital for pep tactics

Mahrez/Zinchenko/Jesus all fit and able to play wide left. Playing very tiresome needs a break and where better than at home vs worst team in the league

I thought he played well against Norwich last week and also against Shakhtar midweek, was unlucky not to get any returns, so i don't think he is losing form.

As for resting, coming midweek is League Cup where I'm pretty sure he will be rested. So if he doesn't play this weekend, you are looking at 10 days or so rest until next weekend, a bit excessive rest I think.

Because people took him out and want to justify it or are just scaremongering. Only way he will be benched is if they go with a 3-5-2 with Mendy but they have a shortage of centre backs anyway and Mendy has just came back. Plus EFL Cup midweek.

Last season Sterling got benched in 6 pl games (HUD BUR wat eve EVE WHU-

Sane played 5 of the 6 on the left wing (sterling position)

            - Mahrez Played 4 on right.

Other 2 Bilva played on right-Jesus and Aguero both started together in only 1 game

This means last season Sane was the player who took sterling place when he was benched. However this season sane injury means sterling got no competition until sane returns

Meanwhie Mahrez has been rotating with Bilva.Unless pep pulls off a fraudulence of the highest order its safe to say Sterling starts.

Well, there is a point to be made here and that point backs up the numbers @hurrikane mentioned. There is no other player in City´s squad providing the same level of depth and width as Sterling does than Sane, and yes that is the main reason why in 90%+ of starts Pep plays Sane whenever Sterling is rested. If you look at City´s tactical shape and the way Pep likes to move forward in attack, there is always 1 attacker providing the depth, at least one. When playing Mendy last season this was mentioned a lot. Maybe now, with Mendy back this can change. O would´nt be surprised if Sterling is rotated with Mendy for example, using Zinch (or Mendy himself) a bit wider.

This is why it's impossible to use last season as a basis for predicting whether Sterling will be benched this week. The argument needs to be made on a more general level. Players get rested because they are tired, hence not being as effective and there being a bigger threat of injury.

Moreover, you could make either the argument that Pep cannot be rest Sterling since that would be complacent, OR the argument that Pep should rest him since for Sterling to remain fit is all the more important now that Sane is out. In a sense, then, it would be more complacent to play him, to assume he will not pick up an injury.

I would prefer looking at things in the simplest terms possible: a footballer has played a lot of minutes recently, and may be in need of a rest for that reason. There is no argument that can demonstrate to any great extent whether he will or will not be rested.

          2. @persecuted_by_mods
              4 years, 7 months ago

You're assuming resting him is complacency, whereas maybe he just sees a laboured player not delivering the goods recently. I disagree with those saying he played well, he did okay certainly wasn't bad but by his high standards it wasn't playing well.

I can see sterling not playing and pep going with any sort of options available to him

I own him and won't be removing as you can never second guess pep, however would not be surprised if he doesn't start. Pep is creative and could use numerous formations and players

Different managers do different things. Klopp doesnt rotate Salah and Mane. Poch doesnt rotate Kane. Pep has a history of rotation in general - Sterling was rested/rotated in 25% of games against non top 6 opposition last season.

Yes there is a chance that he will be rested, but I don't see it. He will rest in the cup game. I think at the moment sterling is way too important for pep to rest him.

Those on or coming towards a wildcard preferably - but long term, are you thinking Greenwood is worth that keeping in that 4.5fwd slot over a comparative midfielder?
Do you ever expect him to break in and start games, or just that nobody else appeals and it fits your structure?

            Pukki, Cantwell, Buendia

SIXTY FIVE (!!) points between them in their 3 “tough” games...

            i.e. Liverpool, Chelsea and City.

Thats an average of over 10 points per player per game

Ahead of an excellent run of games right up until Christmas, I really dont think its entirely crazy to consider having all 3. You dont have to play all 3.

Okay, that form is not really sustainable, but even so, with those fixtures you would expect them to tick along nicely.

Confidence is high, they’re as nailed as you could hope for, have no european football and allow us to release funds for more premium options.

Some may have this idea of “not wanting to double up”. Because of tough games? Like City or Chelsea or Liverpool? They lost 2 of those but so what - they still scored goals and racked up FPL points.

Besides, you can always sell them. I would be surprised if Buendia didnt end up as one of the best value mids for the season (even ahead of Cantwell)

              I think you're right tbh.

At the moment I can't see past a midfield of Salah + Sterling + KDB + Son + Cantwell though (which I'm aiming to reach next week)

              65 points between 3 players (65/3 = 22 points each) in 3 tough games (22/3 = 7 points each).

But you do have a point, even 7ppg from these 3 tough games is awesome!

A happy Pukki and Cantwell owner 🙂

Own Cantwell, had Pukki for a couple of games prior to WC where I went 2 up top of Kun/Haller.

I think next two games away v tough home defences will tell us more. They struggled away at West Ham yet seem galvanised at home where that tight ground and early Prem feel good factor clearly shows.

I'm carrying a transfer over this week.

Plan for next week for a -4:

            Haller - > Tammy
            Bilva - > Son
            Digne - > 4.5 def

Unfortunately I need the extra 0.1 from the Haller sale to afford the 4.5 def.

            Any qualms with this?

            TAA, Zinchenko, Montoya

Drawing at Watford is considered a win for that lot. 😆

Would you sell Rashford for Wilson?

Tricky one. United's fixtures are pretty good and keep getting penalties.

Wilson is a better option, but I'd struggle to sell Rashford right now

Dilemma I'm facing as well. Leaning towards holding for this week, and switching him out next week for Abraham/Wilson/Vardy.

I agree. Switching to Abraham next week seems like a good idea. Can you check out my team below?

Rashford is pretty bad. But hes nailed for an attacking side. WIlson would score 250+ Points if he played forUnited instead of Rashford
