The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 6

As the FPL deadline fast approaches – 19:00 UK time – the Fantasy Football Scout Gameweek Guide offers a recap of the latest advice, statistics, and opinion.

Scout Picks and Team News

Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool provide four premium attackers for this week’s Scout Picks. Agüero and Sterling the two City players of choice ahead of a home match against bottom-of-the-table Watford.

Their inclusion is supported by the DS stats, fixtures and clean sheet odds provided by G-Whizz. But isn’t this a case of deja vu? We all know what happened last week as the Premier League champions lost 3-2 to Norwich City.

Nonetheless, as the dust settled, the stats provided some comfort to owners of the Citizens as Neale reported earlier in the week.

TheFantasyFreÆK highlighted their performance in his Gameweek 5 review:

Aguero accumulated 3 big chances while Sterling recorded 15 penalty area touches, 4 chances created (including 2 big chances created), 4 shots inside the box (including 1 big chance) and was particularly unlucky to come out of the game without any attacking returns.

For those who would prefer to avoid the stress, Sam from FPL Family made the case for Aubameyang

For me, the fixtures and the injury to Lacazette mean that Aubameyang is impossible to ignore, with a run of 6, 6, 5, 9 and 13 points in the first five Gameweeks he is a priority asset.

Neale brought us the latest team news, among the headlines Mason Mount is set to miss this weekend’s clash with Liverpool, while Martial and Pogba remained sidelined with injury. Lanzini is also struggling with a small problem.

Rotation’s Alter Ego provided a handy team-by-team rundown

Survival Guide for a bad Gameweek

Even the best can suffer. Greyhead noted in his review of The Great and The Good that:

Four now sit outside the top 1 million including Ville Ronka and Matthew Jones which should give us mere mortals hope that such FPL legends are not immune to the difficult start that has befallen most of us.

A talking point on this week’s Scoutcast, the panel discussed how to recover from a terrible start

Joe quoted the advice of Simon March, a former FPL winner and a graduate in behavioural economics, that:

FPL is a game you play against yourself

In his Meet the Manager video with Joe last year, Simon described the “What the heck? Effect” – where we are more likely to take risks following a loss.

Karam offered further sage advice on the Scoutcast counselling viewers not to worry too much. Ranks at this stage of the season are still squeezed, so big jumps up/down are possible. The best thing if you are having a bad Gameweek is to close your laptop and come back midweek when you are feeling calmer.

A hot topic on the subject provided a platform for further discussion.

Captain Pick

In the Captaincy Video earlier this week, David pointed out that, since January, the Watford defence has conceded more big chances than any other team. However, the Hornets were more defensive under Flores. Neale pointed out in his Scout Report that:

The key numbers suggest Watford were more solid defensively under Flores but less of an attacking threat. They conceded 32 fewer gilt-edged chances under Flores (66) than they did in Gracia’s final full season in charge (98).

While long-time FFS user Bøwstring The Carp in his community piece on the returning Watford boss added:

We saw a tough-tackling, direct approach mixed with a negative and counter-attacking defence; as if it were the love-child of Allardyce and Mourinho. The stuff of nightmares to some.”

The reason for playing special attention to the Watford defence is their encounter with Manchester City this week. Sterling and Agüero currently lead the Captain Poll on this site with 27% and 25% of the vote.

In his Captain Sensible article, David concludes:

[Agüero] looks the more likely of the two to feature from the beginning and has proved the better goal threat, while Sterling probably offers better creativity and the fact that he gets more points for goals and clean sheets.

The Argentine was benched for Manchester City’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk midweek. Whereas Sterling played the full 90 minutes after starting both matches over the international break. FP Elephant rounded-up the midweek action and playing time for popular FPL players in his They might be tired article.

Outside of Manchester City, Salah and Aubameyang offer the most appealing armband alternatives.

Salah faces a Chelsea team who have conceded 11 goals this season, only Norwich have shipped more with 12. While Aubameyang faces an Aston Villa side who have allowed their opponents to take 90 shots this season, just Norwich and Arsenal themselves have given up more.

Away from the Premier League, for fans of Swedish football and true fantasy lovers, Meltens previewed Gameweek 24 in Fantasy Allsvenskan.

Heraclitus a little flick, here he comes on the far post, Socrates is there, Socrates heads it in! Socrates has scored! The Greeks are going mad, the Greeks are going mad! Socrates scores, got a beautiful cross from Archimedes. The Germans are disputing it. Hegel is arguing that the reality is merely an a priori adjunct of non-naturalistic ethics, Kant via the categorical imperative is holding that ontologically it exists only in the imagination, and Marx is claiming it was offside. Liverpool have 4 goals conceded in 5, 1 pr game and 1cs. Needless goal conceded vs Arsenal late in game, Newcastle scored on their only shot on target, Adrian made an error which won´t happen again. Without rudiger, mount, emerson and kanté will affect them in both ends. Yes Chelsea do scores plenty but look at opponents, United is not what they once were, Wolves is down to EL darkness. Liverpool game was a final, and the game were affected by this, not really relevant for a league game where Pool will go to Bridge to get 3 points and will not allow Chelsea to have an open game. I might be wrong but for me this looks like 2-0 victory for Pool

    TAA (che)
    Otamendi (WAT)

    Mount (LIV)

Currently on Mount cause of cameo fear, but that could sting.

I can see Barnes scoring two plus max Baps.

    Don't have aguero.

for those asking about sterling captaincy etc

this is slightly oversimplified but if we project:
sterling 7.5 points if he starts
sterling 2.5 points if he's benched
    kdb 6 points

then would need to consider it over 70% likely that sterling starts in order for him to be the better captaincy option

                  7.5 if he starts , did you just points/m.p played * 90 ?
                  and
2.5 is even more puzzling ?

sterling 7.5 is what ffs algorithm projects for sterling, likely broken down like this:
                    appearance: 2
                    attacking return: 5
cs: 0.5 (aka 50% chance of city cs)

if he comes on for half an hour he'd get:
                    appearance: 1
attacking return: 1.6 (5 divided by 3 for simplicity, since he's playing ~30% of the game)
this rounds down nicely enough to 2.5pts

simple expected value formula calculates the probability of an event multiplied by the amount of times the event happens. so if we say sterling starts 70% of the time (getting 7.5 points on average) and is benched 30% of the time (getting 2.5 points on average) we can ascertain that on average he'll get 6 points vs watford.

OK , its from members data . Please mention it next time . A lot of non-members here dont havve the data.

                      On another note -
You didnt consider probability that if he is benched then , he will probably be benched for the whole match . The only reason kdb came on was because they were trailing and the chance of those events happening is very slim.

Please help fellas, last minute WC panic.

    A - Salah / Sterling / Haller / Ota / Guilbert
    B - Mane / Son / Auba / Soy / Rico

Hmm, that's what I think too. Probably means A then because no point using WC for short term. Though I could switch back to Salah, Sterling and Haller again in 3 moves (price change dependent) so doable. Ohh man this is tough ha

No but the lad is fire, so it's not a bad idead to risk with him, like I did before the international break vs S'oton 🙂
      I'm starting him.

Can Pep really afford to even rest Sterling? Also what would he be resting him for?

I really want to caption Sterling but seeming to settle on Auba at the mo

The reason for him being rested would be that he played a lot of games the last weeks

cant really see sterling benched tbh, might be taken off around 70 minutes if city leading comfortable

Dropped in form due to tiredness they have good squad depth so they can rest him

only logic is that he was the sole attacker starting both games, vs Norwich and Shakhtar but not sure Pep following that logic tbh

tactically he could perhaps think that they will control the ball poss heavily and needs/relies on smartness and trickery plays, or width, playing jesus and aguero along one of Silva´s or Mahrez in a 3 front attack, with KDB just behind them. Impossible to tell really and if i owned Sterling i would capped anyway
