Scoutcast to discuss luck/skill debate and budget defenders

Joe is joined by Az and David for the latest episode of the Scoutcast tonight.

You can watch it on our YouTube channel from 8pm BST to 9pm BST.

This instalment will overlap with some EFL Cup action so we will do our best to bring you live updates from those matches if they have Fantasy Premier League implications.

Some of the key topics for dicussion in episode 302 include the luck vs skill debate as well as budget and premium defenders.

Gameweek 6 was characterised by the benching of Raheem Sterling (£12.1m), a popular captain candidate.

The fact that he did not take to the pitch for Manchester City’s 8-0 win over Watford meant that many vice-captains came into play.

Some of those fell to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), some to Sadio Mané (£11.6m), while others landed on Kevin de Bruyne (£9.9m) who scored a whopping 17 points.

Joe, David and Az will fight it out to decree whether or not those who got the Belgian’s haul doubled-up were reaping the rewards of a good decision or simply lucky.

Make sure you let us know your view!

Also, with Lucas Digne (£6.2m) disappointing his owners once again, we continue our debate from last week about the value of premium defenders moving forward.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 6:

Hey guess what, Pep doesnt care about you or fantasy. He's trying to win trophies. As a United fan, I'd take the success he's brought to City over United players being FPL options any day of thge week....

          Well, i have Salah too.
          So can't do that obviously.
But like Vardy/Bobby + Son combo.

    What is the luck/skill debate?

Surely skill is prevalent, and luck plays a secondary role. Otherwise, how do explain serial mini league winners and HoF fantasy managers - you can't put that down to luck

    1. Eleven Hag
      • 6 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

      agree

    2. TheDragon
      • 5 Years

      There isn’t much to discuss.

Short term (ie 1 or 2 weeks) luck is a greater factor than skill

Over a 38 week season skill is a much greater factor than luck

You need the opportunity for variance (or luck, whatever you want to call it) to make the game fun and to encourage lots of people to play as it can give the illusion you can do well (at least in the short term) even if you have no idea what you are doing.

      1. Rainer
        • 7 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

Captain being that major variance/lucky factor every week.

Kun the logical captain (with the info pre-game), gets unlucky/poor finishing and loses out to those with Sterling C KDB VC...

That wouldn't happen too many times over a season.

    3. Rainer
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

      Indeed.

Play the %s, have good knowledge & logic and the rest will follow.

      Agreed

Luck is important in fpl as it is in life but those who seem to get lucky more than not have a knack of putting themselves in the way of luck which is a skill in itself.

You make your luck in other words.

    5. Brosstan
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

Getting consistent top 50k (10k in early seasons) results = skill
Finishing even higher than that = luck

The upswing on this week was huge though.

Not only picking a player who was a known rotation but to also captain him, which then moves to move to a player who gets 17 points and some also having Lundstram as first sub. That's incredible luck.

And a big total for others without said luck to make up.

      Yes. I'm bitter.

    Thoughts on this wildcard team:

    Ryan, Button
    Otamendi, Tomori, Soyuncu, Pieters, Lundstram
    Salah, Sterling, Mount, KDB, Dendoncker
    Vardy, Pukki, Abraham

Not sure whether to go with Pukki or switch to Maddison and Greenwood in a 352.
