Are West Ham defenders worth FPL investment?

Three clean sheets on the bounce have placed West Ham’s defence back on the Fantasy Premier League radar.

The Hammers have not conceded a single goal since Andre Gray (£5.9m) scored for Watford in Gameweek 3.

Following the 3-1 win at Vicarage Road, Norwich, Aston Villa and Manchester United have all gone up against Manuel Pellegrini’s men and failed to make a breakthrough.

Interest in West Ham’s defensive assets is understandably on the increase, but are they worth the investment.

This article aims to uncover the Hammers’ clean sheet potential over their upcoming fixtures and which individual assets warrant the spending.

As it uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who are signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

What is West Ham’s clean sheet potential?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 6:

Bit sick of WH defenders after getting the 'nailed on' Balbuana in GW1....

He was more nailed than Diop last year wasn't he? Things took an unexpected turn.

No he wasn't, He played around 2000 minutes whereas Diop played 3000.

They both looked nailed....saw something about Balbuanas involvement in the oppo pen box that swayed me...

Sorry, got bottomed out just then so apologies for the re-post.

On a WC, would you rather have the combo of:

    A) Otamendi + Maddison + Auba
    B) Tomori + Son + Firmino

I should also mention that B would leave me with tripple Liverpool and Chelsea since I also have Salah, TAA, Mount, and Tammy.

    Thanks

A for me. Mad and Auba in great form with great fixtures, perfect combo. City not great at the back but still have more clean sheet potential than most plus Ota good for a goal and pretty nailed.

Many thanks for the affirmation. I have gone for A. What worries me is that everyone is of the opinion that Son is a must have and if I am playing the WC is it madness to not include him?

I wouldn’t worry about that. I did my WC last week and brought him in but I certainly wouldn’t describe him as essential. I’ll be monitoring Spuds next 3 fixtures and seeing how he does, if not great Mad is my most likely replacement. I’m a bit worried about how he’ll do with the crisis of sorts there at the moment.

Thanks for that 🙂 I like Son as a player but if the whole team isn't performing well then it gets even more difficult for them to get points. Classic example is Digne - great player but there is no one at the end of his cross. Will have to wait and see like you say. For now, I am also happy with the Mad + Auba combo. Cheers!

You have good fixtures coming up. That would give Pepe a chance to finally fully settle in and start justifying the price tag. He is a great player. Auba is in great form and another top quality player. Really excited to see Tierny in action soon and assess to see if he would be a great FPL pick. Exciting times ahead (from a Liverpool fan).

Sad to see Pep trotting out the old 'he's got a good heart, he's not a racist' line about Silva. There's a reason in this country we don't regularly have monkey chants directed at players from the stands, or golllywogs selling jam in the supermarkets. Silva might be the loveliest guy on Earth, but what is acceptable in his country is not acceptable in ours, and he will have to apologise for his foolishness.

                      Bad form.

There is no tone. Those images are acceptable there, they are not acceptable here.

Perhaps you apply your own tone on account of your own thoughts and feelings. Ever consider that?

That's the way the tone came across to me. And no I'm not deflecting. Also consider that Twitter is not just for a UK audience, viewers of that Tweet are not just from a country where that image is no longer acceptable.

So I should be able to tweet about homosexuality being punishable by death on account of it being visible in countries where the law stipulates this?

The funny thing is Mendy did not find the post even slighlty racist, however all the snowflakes seem to have become ofended on his behalf.

        'snowflakes'. Oh please, grow up.

Mendy does represent or speak for all black people. It's no more about how only he individually feels about Silva's racism than in of the case of, for example, Lukaku.

How do you feel about hundreds of fans making monkey chants at Lukaku. Are you offended by that?

Cultural and institutional racism hurts indivuals AND degrades society and mental health for us all. I find that offensive

Looking forward to the incorrect “it definitely wasn’t racist” posts

No individual (Benjamin Mendy included) has the right to say “it wasn’t racist”

They can only say “I personally didn’t find it racist”

Might seem pedantic, but there is a positively HUGE difference

In the 1970s and 1980s players had to shoulder cultural and institutional racism and they were taken as 'good sports' if they just accepted it as banter. The idea that the responsibility for speaking up or fighting this should lie on their shoulders only (they who were oppressed and had no power anyway) is a very naieve attitude and one that I feel, ultimately, condones racism.

Ditto the 'offended on their behalf' posts.

Just look to Italy where the institutional racism is so ingrained that Lukaku has basically had to take on the chin that institutions have essentially accepted explanations that hundreds or thousands of fans monkey chanting him are doing so out of an 'affection' for him, or as a sign of respect for the threat he poses as a striker.

That's offensive. It's not Lukakus job to smash that.

I was also glad Kickout specifically referenced the word ‘banter’ in their comments on why they find it unacceptable

Again, may seem pedantic, or killjoy etc - but the word “banter” should never be used in the same sentence to excuse any behaviour that could be condoned as racist - it’s far too sensitive a topic, close to far too many people’s hearts to disrespect with the word “banter” or “snowflake” etc imo, regardless of anyone’s subjective opinions on the player’s intent - good, bad or indifferent, and anyone’s own opinion on whether or not they personally found it racist

In a way it will be a positive in the long run though, as education is the way forward here rather than retaliation or punishments - the chances of anyone properly educated on the matter engaging in this type of behaviour or holding those outdated types of opinions, should be virtually nil

I am surprised and a little shocked by peps tacit endorsement of racist imagery and jokes. I understand his desire to protect his player who by all accounts probably is a lovely man with his heart in the right place and a good friend of Ben Mendy

But that an racist behaviour are not mutually exclusive. There is absolutely no place for it and it's embarrassing to see pep fail to recognise this

And so it is just as well that the decision on what action to take will be based on proliferation of the kind of racial stereotypes and jokes that have historically been used not only to offend but to oppress, dehumanise and degrade minorities, and not whether Ben Mendy or indeed I am offended by them.

He's also a representative of the club brand, any sponsorship branding and really an ambassador for the PL and football in general. I 100% understand his desire to protect the good name of a player who likely he knows is a proper little stand up guy (and on of my favourite players!). But it's disappointing that they didn't just put their hands up and admit to making a well intentioned gaff. Really he's just opened himself up to needing to go on the same educational course that Bernardo will have to go on. You just can't have a player posting racist stereotypes and on camera joking about a black man in a black shirt being invisible and expect to make excuses. That time has gone

I have Pukki, Barnes and Aguero up front, Sterling mid too and likely getting Otamendi.

What 3 from city is better?
          A) Ota, Sterling and De bryune? then have two strikers like Abraham & Pukki. (3-4-3)
          B) Ota, Sterling, Aguero ? then abraham and 4.5 striker to bump up midfield to 5 good players (3-5-2)

Proving that someone is racist is possible pretty hard to do. Knowing someone's intent is nearly impossible unless you are a mind reader. It could be he is just a number of other things; naïve, unaware or just a bit of a d!CK.

I'm not talking about acceptability. To brand somebody a racist without knowing the context of why he's done it seems is rash.

Could be just banter between teammates. I work with an English lad and we sometimes call him The Tan. He knows it's just banter. If Silva has other than banter in mind he deserves a slap on the wrist.

Banter between mates in private is one thing, a professional footballer doing it on social media is another. Does Mendy's acceptance of the banter speak for the sentiments of the entire race?

I don't know the entire race but maybe some of them see it as banter. Ill-judged banter though it was. I think Pep's 4 or 5 language remark was an insult to most people's intelligence though I find him fairly insincere at the best of times.

What Bernardo Silva did is not racist. I'm fed up of everyone being sensitive about literally any topic people love kicking an unnecessary fuss. If it's meant to be a joke, then take it as a joke. If he posted a look a like of Aguero with a white cartoon no one would be saying it's racist, so how is this any different?

It means little Congolese and they arrived in Spain in the 70s after gaining independence from Belgium .many of the children would have been suffering from starvation yet Spain decided a cute version of a Congolese immigrant with big eyes and lips could sell candy...is that the same story for the milky bar kid? Somehow I doubt it.

I think you're missing the point. Regardless of whether it was banter, these guys are paid a fortune to perform at this level. As role models they fall under the scrutiny of the world's media and are expected to uphold a sense of decency - to avoid behaviour other people may find offensive. Silva should have known that image would cause hysteria in many circles, up to and including 'Kick it Out', but he posted it regardless. Evidently because he doesn't care.

If I tweeted some of the jokes my variegated mates and I share, I'd be kicked off Twitter at once. And I'm fine with that. Twitter is a global medium, while we and our mates banter in a bubble. Looking outward doesn't have to be PC, it can simply be respectful.

Dendo (probably the only week I’d suggest this)

So regarding Madders; doesn't really sound like he will start does it?

Joe Willock is a better player than Dani Ceballos.

Zinchenco > Otamendi for free a no brainer? (already have Coleman and TAA)

Which option is best on wildcard?

            A) Maddison / Aguero
            B) Sterling / Pukki

Though one. At the moment A looks very tasty (only if Mad's injury is for 1 gameweek and you have someone else to slot in), however, more long-term I would say B. Given that it is your WC, I would do B

Cheers - I’m leaning towards B as it’s better long term

Im curious why Salah is leading the captain poll. Everton concede a lot of goals and man city score a lot of goals...why isn't Aguero/Sterling the main captain choice?

Everton may improve. They need to. Plus Norwich was recent enough.

Yes but Liverpool and City are different levels above any other team

You have to back Liverpool with their form v a newly promoted team?

That newly promoted team just beat Everton 2-0 away from home!! How do you justify that?

When you say liverpools form... still Manchester City score more goals than them which is what matters here
