Scoutcast Episode 302 – Rollercoaster

This rollercoaster of a season continues. There were some dramatic highs and lows in Gameweek 6 and plenty more predicted for the weeks ahead.

Those that captained the non-playing Raheem Sterling and vice-captained the hauling Kevin De Bruyne last weekend certainly experienced the ups and downs of Fantasy management.

This week’s crew of Joe, David and Az wonder whether such decisions are down to luck or skill as they look in detail at this season’s evolving captaincy tactics.

The tale of three Fantasy managers – FPL Chef, deputy editor Neale and Scoutcaster Andy – take centre stage in the Scoutcast’s Rough with the Smooth round-up. The highs and lows of playing the game could not be any starker for this trio, who saw their FPL teams hacked, removed, then eventually returned this week.

Elsewhere, patience is running thin with Everton’s Lucas Digne and the crew reveal their strategies for tackling Chelsea and Leicester’s forthcoming favourable fixture run.

A legend of FPL in recent years is Az’s latest differential pick. Considering his last selection was Norwich striker Teemu Pukki, he has set the bar high already.

Clean sheets over the next six Gameweeks, the West Ham defence, a few pots of jam and Az’s aunt, or is it uncle, also make an appearance.

I am yet to watch a scout cast. Should I?

Give one a watch and then you can decide whether or not to watch them again.

To be fair I haven't watched any this season so can't give a recommendation one way or the other.

Most pointless reply of the day 😉

Go on, give it a watch, then for good or bad you can reply armed with knowledge.

There's jam and an odd aunt/uncle analogy too. 🙂

But along the way there's lots of advice about captain tactics, players to dump and players to get in the next month or so due to fixture swings.

Advice, teddys, jam and more 🙂

I used to watch them more when there was Mark and Granville and the podcast had a bit more of a "the boys" vibe. Too professional for me now personally, but it's a good product and you should try it for yourself

Huge growth in viewers and listeners over the last year so we must be doing something right.

Probably commensurate with the popularity of FPL. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy it but there are a couple other pods now which are my regulars with a bit more flair and banter

My favourites apart from the scoutcast (obviously ;-)) are Who Got the Assist,FPL General's one, Always Cheating and for Sky the Sky Podcast.

As a punter I like to hear from experienced managers with good advice and engaging personalities.

You guys have taken the sensible business route in terms of advertisement, more/regular content/articles/videos, click bait titles etc. That's totally fine but it also means the scoutcast doesn't have an ounce of the rawness and sincereness as back in the days.

I've been doing it since the old days, felt pretty 'raw' then when Mark and Granville had a go at my wildcards 😉

I still get the same deserved 'sincereness' from David, Az, Luke etc to this day for my decisions.

It is no longer practical to be just two guys trying to get it done while they are at work in a spare half an hour as brilliant as that was...but we can still have a few laughs and offer advice to this day.

The scout cast is ok but I think it could be improved a bit:
      - as it’s live it would be good if u referenced the chat every so often or responded to real time events happening. A lot of the time games are going on during the podcast and people score or get injured and you guys don’t mention it at all.
      - the other thing I would say is that is not really a discussion. You each take your turn to talk for ten minutes without anyone else chipping in and points get forgotten or not countered because that person spoke for so long. It should be more of an active discussion so you are all having a conversation, not just two of you sit in silence for ten minutes while the other one waffles on. That makes it a bit boring imo

We try and do all those things. But good to get feedback that people may like more of that.

For eg this week Kamil in the live's chat wildcard decision was referenced. Last week we resonded live to the Chelsea game with Mounts injury and the discussion recently around luck, skill, double liverpool defence etc is definitely a discussion.. got heated at times even! 🙂

I think it’s pretty disrespectful to say that it’s rubbish without Mark. These guys obviously put a great deal of time and effort into the Scoutcasts and I find them an entertaining listen in the background while I’m working. I think they have some good banter and the occasional good pick too.

Bottom line if you’re listening because you think it will help you win FPL then you’ll be disappointed but if you’re listening to hear a bunch of guys going through the same stuff you are with your team and going over possibilities then it’s great.

Nothing’s like the old days any more that’s why they’re called the old days.

Ultimately I think we can all agree it isn't the same without Mark. I respect him taking a back seat but there's no one on there who knits it all together like Mark with his style and wit and track record. Az and Luke are good together.

I watch it sometimes especially during weeks where I am unsure of next moves or deciding between a few players. The content is comprehensive (if I want entertainment I watch a movie). Just like any content it can range from great to average. The presenter do try their best and are proven FPL managers.

If you have the spare hour to chill out its still a decent listen just a different dynamic than the Mark days. I sometimes use it as an opportunity to catch up on short term fixtures and scout potential transfers, that I may or may not have been considering, whilst listening to it.
Watched it on YT after work this eve and when I seen Az having a beer I thought thats a good idea and cracked open a cold one myself...cheers!

Once the Leicester fixtures swing in 2 weeks time, thinking of doing TAA & Pukki --> Soyuncu and Vardy (-4).

Quite aggressive I know but would give me a starting team of:

    Pope
    Otamendi Soyuncu Diop
    Sterling Mane KDB Mount
    Vardy Haller Abraham

I would not want to lose TAA. His fixtures are also going to get better in the next month I think. Would rather downgrade Haller than TAA.

With the Champions League kicking in, I can see TAA getting rotated with Gomez much more in the Premier League.

Also Vardy and Haller would be my differential.

I own all 4 of the players involved in that transfer and wouldn't get rid of any, so it's tough to advise you on that one really. I would personally do Mane and Haller to Son and Vardy.

TAA is season keeper for me. Liverpool has kept only one CS and he still has got 31 points. I would sacrifice Haller somehow

    Sterling owners.
I guess this week the sensible play is to hold for now?
    Are you captaining though?

I'm so tempted to do Sterling and Barnes to Son and Firmino but I guess another week to look at Sterling is wise? Just worried I will be in the same boat for the next few weeks being scared to drop him. Thoughts?

I've been tempted by the same moves but it just doesn't sit right with me.

Sterling's a premium asset and it just feels wrong to jump off him. City are so far ahead of everyone in terms of xG, and Sterling will surely still reap the rewards whenever he's on the pitch.

IMO the right time to drop Sterling was last week after a 12+m player blanked twice (can’t have that really) - if you didn’t then you must have had your reasons for holding faith for a third crack at a haul, a chance he hasn’t yet had until after this weekend.

        In hindsight, yes.

I'm still on for sterling > Son which also allows me to do Greenwood to Barnes.

I have KDB and Ota, I believe Ota is nailed atm and I do not trust the pep roulette with anyone atm. Having a 12m player Who you cannot guarantee to start is not good enough for me.

Feel I could use the funds to strengthen other areas which I hope can cover the points sterling may get

Exactly. I hope Sterling starts - looking at the latest Everton - Man City games, a lot of games coming from the player at the left wing (Sane mostly, but still). I think City is due to score about 3 goals, whereas Liverpool should be happy if they can get 2 against a defensive SHU team

I'm not usually a fan of taking hits... & I don't think a -8 merits use of WC

    A: Dilva & Richarlison to KDB & McGinn (2fts)
    or
B: Dilva, Richarlison, Digne & Haller to KDB, Mount, Otamendi & Pukki (-8)

have the exact money for B

Weirdly, Salah feels more 'droppable' than Sterling to me.

Liverpool will continue to beat teams without ever really dishing out a hammering. City, on the other hand, do have that potential to put any side to the sword which arguably makes Sterling a better captaincy option if you're looking for more explosive returns.

Salah's there as more of a consistent captain option, I think.

Tempted to get rid of Salah and hope to 'cover' him with Firmino, but don't think I have the cojones for it!

Salah's goal involvement is a lot higher than Sterling's though. Doesn't matter if Man City score more goals if Sterling isn't involved in the same proportion as Salah.

I haven't looked at the stats for these two, and sure your argument holds in this case! As a general principle, though, this doesn't quite work.

Involved in 20% of 100 goals is as good as 50% of 40 goals (assuming same goals/assists ratio)

Sure, that's true. Man City have only scored 7 more goals than Liverpool so far though. Last season I don't think they actually scored a stupid amount more than Liverpool either

Unfortunately I think the most likely to be dropped or should I say rested is Bobby. He is the main player out the 3 and glues it all together so arguably I feel Klopp is likely to rest him.

Salah on the other hand does less tracking back out the 3 hence has more in the tank and stays on the field longer

Tomori really? One thing chelsea cant do is defending and you getting a defender with very lucky chances of points. Any of Azpi/Perreira would be better. Mcginn hits mostly from outside th box. Gotta go Cantwell and upgrade Tomori

I really don't see why people are selling Digne. He went through bad patches last season but still finished as one of the highest scoring defenders. I see the same thing happening this year. If I was wildcarding I'd consider getting rid for a Diop or Soyuncu but no way would I sell for a hit. Calm down bruv.

Chelsea under Lampard literally defend like a team riding around on unicycles whilst juggling. I mean, go ahead by all means but I find it absurd to ship him out for a hit – and certainly not for Azpi. Maybe Alonso because he's more likely to get you attacking returns but again certainly not for a hit.

Probably not of much interest to many of you, but Ndidi is already showing signs of great improvement compared to last year. His passing tends to be crisper, faster and it's already a lot more accurate. If he continues to improve like this he will soon be in contention for the best DM in the league.

      He fancy's a shot also.

Ndidi had a great spell at the back end of the 16/17 season where he bagged himself a few goals. He could be a diff/punt for to upcoming good fixtures if he ever finds that Midas touch again.

He does fancy a shot, but if he's going to get any goals they'll be from set pieces - he's already got two from them this season (although one was disallowed for someone else's offside). Feels like Rodgers doesn't want him to as many this season when Tielemans and Maddison also take low-percentage shots from deep.

If he was 4.5 he'd be worth buying, he isn't unfortunately.

Looks good to me. Both have decent fixtures. I was looking at something similar. Might want an exit strategy for Jota if his form doesnt pick up though.

Pep on Sterling after the Preston game: "I know his work ethic. He didn't play last game, but he came here with incredible humility and played at an incredible level."

Maupay with 7 shots against Newcastle. Is he just not clinical enough?

No less clinical than Aguero so must be worth 12m

Think he picked up an injury at some point in the game, might have affected it

On a WC. Want Auba long term but thinking of captaining Kane for 1 GW against SOU (h) and then make the switch

Do you think it's worth it?

His record against Southampton is quite good: 6 goals and 1 assist in the last 5 matches

Looks ok to me, personally I don’t think auba going to get much vs Man U. Maybe six points max or a blank imo.
Kane is a bit risky but could be a nice move.
(Kane is my captain, I also own Auba)

Auba blank :O impossible. Fancy him for a goal or two in his form. Should be a few goals in that game an exciting one

2-2 please, with Arsenal own goals

It’s a bit of a hard result to predict imo. I don’t think many were expecting Man U to beat Leicester yet they did. It’s either going to be a thriller or like 1-1, 2-1. Auba probably will get something but a brace I just can’t see it
