Why being patient with a Wildcard might be wise

Can we remove the captaincy aspect of Fantasy Premier League now, please? The one thing I wanted to improve on going into this season more than anything else was captaincy success rate. Six weeks in, I haven’t made the right call yet and it’s bloody frustrating. Captaining Sterling and vice-captaining Salah over De Bruyne last weekend was the latest in a run of captaincy fails. Surely Gameweek 7 is going to be the one – surely?

It’s another tricky decision for the armband this week with Man City and Liverpool both playing away. Tammy Abraham (£7.5m) is being mooted in the community but can he be trusted?

Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.7m) have a great fixture at home to Southampton but Spurs are a bit of a mess right now.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) could do well on Sunday at home to Newcastle while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) can’t be ruled out either despite an away trip to Old Trafford. Let’s face it, that’s probably a green fixture on the FDR for Arsenal given how United played against West Ham in Gameweek 6.

All that said, it’s hard to look past a free-scoring Man City team off the back of their 8-0 drubbing of Watford. Everton have been shipping goals for fun recently so it could be another big Gameweek for the City attackers.

Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) is the pick of the bunch again this week for those lucky enough to own him. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.9m) is a reliable captaincy pick now given the form he’s in. The big question is whether to trust Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) or not with the armband after two blanks and a benching (and a couple of price drops thrown in for good measure). Is it madness to keep the faith with him or should we play safe with someone like De Bruyne or Salah? How sweet would it be to captain him and he scores 15+ points after being sold by 275,000+ managers?

As my excitement levels rise typing this, the pain of last Saturday returns to remind me what could happen again this weekend. Another Sterling captain blank would be too much to take, but I’m probably going to do it anyway. If he does let me down again, Lord Lundstram is getting the armband for the rest of the season.

Wildcarding during the next international break is on my mind, but I find myself wondering when is the ideal time to play it this season? It’s always nice to have two weeks to build a shiny new squad but that’s not a good enough reason to activate it. I’m happy with my squad and if the next two Gameweeks go smoothly, then there will be no need to hit the button ahead of Gameweek 9.

As Fantasy managers, do we play it too early just because we have it burning a hole in our pocket? When you look at taking a -4 or -8, the natural reaction is, why should I sacrifice points when I could just do it for free with a Wildcard?

The second Wildcard is usually kept for the final third of the campaign which is an awful long way away. Use a Wildcard now and you are effectively setting your team up for the next five months.

Is there more to be gained from being patient with it and using it in November/December to prepare for the busy festive schedule? It’s something I’ve never done but can see myself doing it this season.

There’s a wealth of options delivering consistently at present but fast forward to December and there could be a whole new crop players that we desire. Having a Wildcard in hand if that does happen could prove to be very powerful. It’s something to think about, at least.

Good luck in Gameweek 7 folks.

  1. The template currently seems very settled.

I'm struggling to see where new options will pop up considering early WCers already have
A 4.5 keeper from burnley in pope, the best defender in the game in TAA, an in into the city defense for cheap with Otamendi, an oop bargain in lundstram, a Chelsea no. 10 in Mount, the best possible 4.5 mid in cantwell, kdb being a premium disguised as a 9.5er Chelseas striker at sub 7.5, pukki at 6.5 in a very attacking Norwich side.. And a choice of 2/3 from sterling, Salah, son, Auba, Aguero, mane, firmino, Vardy.. Who will continue performing well all season so the cheaper you get them the better.

The only improvement I can see on the horizon is Pope to Fabianski for the save points.

If you look closely at the fixtures, this will start changing around GW 10, and the template will be pretty different come GW 14-15.

With regular CL football and fixture pile up, you'll find value elsewhere in mid-sized teams.

Can't see pope, TAA, ota, lunds, kdb, Cantwell, mount/Abraham, Pukki not offering value for a while especially if you got them for cheap. Shifting premiums from auba/Aguero to salah/mane etc could be on the cards but that's easily manageable if you maintain your core around them.

I think The General's point was it may be better to move for those kinds of value players for the likes of a -4 or -8 now/soon instead of using the WC at the 1st possible chance just to get it out of the way.

Opportunities will come later in the season with fixture swings/ injuries and lots of different options across many teams providing value. A couple of sneaky differentials could be handy at some point too.

No guarantees the core 8/9 players remain the same until Christmas.

Yup probably that. I'd always prefer not taking hits though since fpl is all about averages at the end of the day and even 10 hits over a season means you are losing 1 ppg per game on average when most players average just 4 to 6 ppg over a season. Again that's just personal preference though.

The key for hits is their return, long-term! Not short-term, which is what everyone forgets. If your hits have positive long-term affects for weeks on end, then it negates any penalty suffered very quickly.

The catch 22 is long term all players even out to 4 to 6 ppg.. So unless it's a hit to swap out an injured/dead player or upgrade a cheap player to a premium long term is actually the issue.

Some have averaged more, or less than that limited range of PPG tho, cmon! And you're also not including getting rid of the "old" players for the "new" ones (the old players who were underperforming also hurts your rank, not unlike a hit would, and more likely, worse!)

10 hits is 40 points which is roughly 1ppw, not 1ppg!

Its .1 ppg, which in turn is 2% of the average you quoted 5ppg.

A 2% penalty for a 100% better player is a good tradeoff - if it came down to that..

Maybe Maddy or other Lei assets

I suspect teams to get tighter at the back as the season progresses, like always. So double pool defense is going to be relevant again, plus keeping an eye on Laporte return and possibly Burnley defense 2.0

Yup. The only major swing could be into defense. Agreed. That 4th defender spot for a pool player could be good. Leicester assets in place of mount and laporte for ota in jan or so could be minor shifts too.

Yup injuries are what's going to change everything. Though this year if Salah gets injured mane comes in.. If kdb.. Son comes in.. If Aguero gets injured jesus comes in.. If Sterling gets injured funds could be freed upfront with mahrez.. Its just that everybody lokks like they have a ready made replacement at their price point. I think it's jsut the quality of the epl that's increased that provides these ready made alternatives now.

I agree with this. I've taken 1 hit this season. The core team staying the same (minus double Everton defence and removal of Zinchenko). Apart from that pretty easily put a good side together without the need for a W/C.

The summer w/c used to be very helpful with the transfer window after the season's openers. Now it's before we have a better idea of who is where.

This season maybe more than any I can remember, we have lots of good deals. Not just the budget oop but also underpriced KDB and Tammy as you say.

I'm going to hold on to my w/c now I think - could be used for fixture swing before the new year to build value and push OR before another W/C in the spring DGWs. Definitely seems to be the way to shoot it this season.

This is a really interesting thought, and I tend to agree that its difficult to imagine many new options popping up that you could't fairly easily accommodate into a WC team. You've clearly been a member for many years, does this season feel different in that you don't see new options popping up?

It does.. In the old days we had 1 WC so I had a habit of keeping it all season. Last few seasons I've kept it till December and basically broke my template just to get new options in and failed. This year I WCed early for the first time in 12 years. And it just feels right with all the options available and their replacements priced just right too.

Only reason Im doing well is because I got Cantwell and Pukki early in wk 2. I also only had TAA and rest cheapos at the back with Auba and Mcginn.

I'm literally only 1-2 weeks ahead. Makes big difference in OR so early though.

The thing is I have all of those elements except Pope and TAA and I still have my WC. Admittedly I have taken 5 hits so far (2x -8 and 1x -4) so you could argue it is equivalent to a pseudo-WC but I wanted to keep it until the next shift in fixtures/ rotations and some new value picks emerge

Last season I used it in December and swapped Salah out.. Got absolutely destroyed :). Sometimes players are template for a reason. Last few seasons I've spent 15 or so gws building the perfect team only to use the WC to change it up and then use my fts to play catch up. Dint want that happening this year 🙂

I have taken just one hit this season so far, a -4 to get Pukki in GW3. Immediate profit on that one and have not felt the need for any more hits, though I am on WC this week due to a couple of injuries and a couple of players that I felt I needed to get on early to catch price rises. TV shooting up nicely.

I look at it the other way round.. I've made 4 transfers this year and used my WC. So I've not lost any points on hits.. Unless something goes horribly wrong ie i lose 4 starters through injury etc I won't be taking a hit for the foreseeable... And i always have a safety net of a few hits in that likelihood since my early WC prevented me from taking those.. If that makes any sense 🙂

I play fpl with averages.. Ie players usually score 4 to 6 ppg over a season.. So even 10 hits is losing 1 ppg etc. So for me hits are poison. Though obviously that's a controversial and subjective opinion and won't be shared my many on here.

It's not as hard as you make it seem.

There are still lots of very strong picks that are being left out.

Firmino, Vardy, Son, Maddison, Aubameyang, Martial are all template busters.

We've already seen Lucas Digne fall off the template when people were certain he was going to be a season keeper.

2 or 3 blanks from Tammy or Mount and suddenly, their fixtures aren't as good, and some other team are surging.

Just play fundamentally good FPL. Don't miss price rises so you can eke out a team value edge, and use your best judgement.

What if CHO makes the 1st team?

Other options will open up as players become injured - then of course there is also the 2nd transfer window

Another source of potential template entrants is the pool of players who have under-performed and dropped significantly in price. Jota, King, Wood, Jimi, Delofeo and Sigi come to mind. As template players become more expensive people look for value elsewhere and injury or a downward shift in their form will see them quickly replaced.

Mentioned getting 2/3 out of 8 heavy hitters...all hinges on getting the right heavy hitters at the right times....and captaining the right one...

since none of these players are owned by the majority, the price points should reflect current value to get them in not original prices. eg: i don't have cantwell so if I'm bringing him in it's 5.0m

as for non template players, teams will go through streaks for sure so a Jimenez type could have a great 6 week run with good fixtures to offer alternative options in the below premium striker bracket.

      Everton could start scoring....Siggy
Alonso could turn back the clock

    Zinchenko to Tomori, for free?

I don't want Otamendi/Aurier, already have Soyuncu, Diop, VvD, Digne, Pope & Heaton.

Or should I save FT and hope Diop covers Zinchenko, this GW?

I’d be getting rid of Zinchenko. Pep loves Mendy and it’s wasted money on your bench. At least if Tomori starts, he has a chance at a clean sheet for cheap. Especially with their fixtures, surely they will get better at the back with Rudiger back.

For those with both Pope and Heaton, who are you giving the goalie jersey to?

They've had two CSs each so far and I've had the right one in goal on those 4 occasions, but it's overdue to bite me in the ass right about now.

Pukki doesn't need to have the same form away as at home. At 6.5 for 8.0 pts per week (2 away blanks) I'll take that.

Salty? All I'm saying is for 6.5 cost he doesn't have to smash it every week.

Last year Aguero scored 6 away goals and still finished with 200+ points for double Pukki's price. If Pukki can keep a good home form going and bag a handful of goals away for 6.5 it's more than worth it.

Nice team. Would keep Aurier, higher ceiling and most likely to start this weekend. KWP played midweek and foyth more likely as back up centre back. Aurier could be rested now and then, and rarely comes on as sub to avoid 1 pointer. Possibly son for these 3 weeks then swap to KDB

Wildcard active. Thoughts on this appreciated!

    Fabianski; (McGovern)
    TAA; Otamendi; Söyüncü; (Lowton; Lunds)
    Salah; KDB; Dilva; Mount; (Yarmo)
    Firmino; Abraham; Pukki

Debating whether to make these changes:
    Salah > Sterling
    Otamendi > Matip

Triple up City midfield could be gold. Think it’s unlikely that more than one miss out in any single GW and Yarmo looking good to come in as cover.

Firmino outperforming Salah for value at the mo and has almost as many points.

Liverpool defence looks likely to start keeping more clean sheets. Been quite unlucky so far. Matip has scored already this season and could potentially be benched for Lowton or Lunds in the trickier fixtures.

    What do you reckon guys?

    TAA, Soyoncu, Tomori (Diop, Lundstrum)

I'm having my best start to an FPL season because I didn't overanalyze using my WC early. I saw a problem with my line up early on and corrected it quickly with the WC. Now I'm doing fine. A manager with high performing line up don't have to activate his WC early if 1/2 FT can solve his problem. My point is it doesn't really matter when you play your WC, if you see a need to change your entire squad in GW 2, activate your WC else you may chase shadows for the rest of the season.

the problem there is that it's hard to know if the week 1/2 underperformers are actually bad picks or not - sometimes it's possible to tell but not always. I did Jota -> Pukki after GW1 which was pretty risky and could have backfired horribly, I'm just lucky that Jota then decided to go on a barren run (helped by EL tbf) and Pukki was epic. Could have easily been the opposite

        High risk high reward

But in pukki's case, he looked like a ahoe in in GW2/3, given the way Norwich play and the nailedonness and his predatory play. Matter of time for people to jump in

But in all seriousness if you don't want to take the risk I would say Salah.

Currently also on Salah although I might go for Sterling because I think not many people will captain Sterling in my ML

I liked owning Yarmo in the past but McGinn is such a work horse. Unlikely not to have more pts imo.

Might do Mane > Son for a -4. Then I can get TAA in next week. What do you think?

      TAA first before son imo

He can't get Trent first. Either he already has 3 Liverpool or he needs the funds released from Mane

And you can't straight swap Mane to TAA so might have to take a hit.

Rather ironically, I just posted this on the last article...

last week has finally broken me, playing WC

    Pope Button
    Otamendi Diop Soy Rico *****
    KDB Mane Maddison Mount Dendoncker
    Aguero Tammy *****

    The blanks will be filled with;
    A TAA and Barnes
    B Robbo and Pukki

    which do you prefer?

    Any thoughts appreciated

Who is best captain option by considering their record:
    A. Salah (always scoring vs promoted team, but poor away points)
    B. Sterling (good record vs everton, consistent away points)
    C. Abraham (Chelsea's good record vs BHA)

I'm going Sterling. He has had his rest and is still one of the best options in the game for me when fit.

Sterling's rest appears to have made everyone forget the previous 4 games (the ones where Aguero started).

I thought he was as dangerous as ever vs Norwich.. Went off the post and had a couple clear assists denied by bad finishing. Brighton was an off day though I agree.

Have 2FTs and planning to do A and B over the next 2 gw's but not sure what to prioritise first i.e. this gw

A: James >> Mount...................... and start Vvd + Mount + King
    B: Vvd / King >> Aurier / Tammy...and start Aurier + James + Tammy

With A, there is a small chance I opt for haller over tammy next gw
With B, there is a small chance I opt for Anderson/Yarma over mount next gw
