Captain Sensible

Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 7?

The Fantasy Premier League captaincy debate for Gameweek 7 continues to be wide open with a number of candidates all vying to be crowned the best option.

Manchester City and Liverpool both face fixtures that managers are finding hard to predict while Chelsea host Brighton and Spurs go up against a Southampton side with an unreliable defensive unit.

With so many options to consider, the Captain Sensible article is perhaps as important as its ever been.

As we do every single Gameweek, we have assessed the form of the leading candidates and the state of their upcoming opponents’ defences to see which ones tick the most boxes for captain success.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has returned to the summit of the Fantasy Football Scout Captain Poll but for Gameweek 7, his majority is not a particularly sizeable one. This season, the most popular skipper each week has typically pulled in the support of roughly 40% but this weekend, Liverpool’s Egyptian star has just 26.1% of the votes at the time of writing.

He is not in bad form, of course, his assist against Chelsea last time out his seventh attacking return of the campaign after just six matches. Salah has score four goals in total, that assist at Stamford Bridge his seventh of the campaign.

Perhaps what is stopping him from enjoying a true domination of the Captain Poll is the venue of his next match. Preparing for a trip to face Sheffield United, Salah remains goalless on the road this season, all four of his Premier League strikes coming at Anfield in 2019/20 so far.

Furthermore, the Blades may have only kept one clean sheet at Bramall Lane since promotion but they are yet to be thrashed as a Premier League side. Their 3-5-2 system has proved hard to break down on more than one occasion in the last six matches, so it will always be hard for Fantasy managers to predict a goal glut against them.

Looking likely to secure second place in the poll is Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham (£7.5m), who has pulled clear of the chasing pack in the last few days.

Ahead of Brighton’s visit to Stamford Bridge, the centre-forward has been selected as the best captain option by 15.9% of voters in the poll.

That’s not surprising based on Abraham’s form considering that he has scored seven goals in his last four matches, including a hat-trick against Wolves in Gameweek 5.

Next opponents Brighton have had a mixed bag of away fixtures this season, so far keeping clean sheets at goal-shy Watford and Newcastle. However, their only road trip at a top-six side so far resulted in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, which arguably could have been a heavier defeat.

Support for Abraham has grown in recent days, perhaps influenced by his absence from midweek action and Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) involvement against Preston. On Tuesday, the two Englishman were tied on 12%, but the Chelsea man has pulled clear by 3% since then.

The Manchester City midfielder remains in a similar position, with 11.8% of the votes ahead of a trip to Everton.

Sterling did miss last week’s 8-0 demolition of Watford, and scored at Deepdale in the EFL Cup third round, but neither of those things should count against him for Gameweek 7.

The rest in Gameweek 6 means he is arguably one of the most likely starters at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon and so far this season, he has blanked away from home just once.

Sterling scored a hat-trick at West Ham on the opening weekend and also found the net in the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth. He was also unfortunate not to get any attacking returns when Manchester City lost to Norwich as his header cannoned back off the post and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m) was close to converting a late cross.

Meanwhile, Everton have not kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 2 when they hosted a struggling Watford side. Since then they have conceded at least twice in every match home and away.

It is surprising then that both Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.9m) are both backed by fewer than 10% in our latest captain poll.

Perhaps Fantasy managers are concerned about rotation ahead of next week’s Champions League hosting of Dinamo Zagreb but it seems unlikely that either of them will be benched given that neither played against Preston on Tuesday night.

Aguero is still yet to blank this season, scoring eight goals in six matches and providing two assists too but just 7.6% of the voters in our poll believe he is the best captain for Gameweek 7.

Meanwhile, de Bruyne has the support of just 4.6% after averaging nine points per game so far this season.

Completing the top five options in the poll is Tottenham’s Son Heung-min (£9.7m) who has the backing of 10.3%.

This weekend he faces a home match against Southampton having registered three attacking returns in his last two league outings.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) has also been considered for this match, but only 5.3% of the voters.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Sadio Mané (£11.6m) have the backing of 3.1% and 2.9% ahead of the trip to Sheffield United.

Finally, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Mason Mount (£6.6m) are the only other candidates with more than 1% of the vote.

      Really quite like. Well done

I’ve taken a mini WC (2.9 in bank) to more or less this. Irritated with myself for bottling Vardy this week - coming in in 9. Very cross really.

      Argument for Auba over Kun?

      Oh misread

If you’re going different then it’s 100% Vardy over Bobby. They probs cancel each other out in 8 but beyond that - including this week - Vardy has fixtures and of course 20 goal a season track record.

Bobby not a bad call but he’s not the real differential

We all know Mahrez is not yet nailed on that City team, and will be rotated, occasionally hopefully. What we know is Mahrez has more game time this season, and may as well be a breakthrough season for him. The last time he played the entire season and they won the league, he scored 240 points, that is on par with the likes of Mane and not far away from Salah who is the most expensive asset. Is he worth a shout to bring in at this time? He is definitely a risk but if he keeps on performing the way he is then I can see him becoming a fixture this season.

    1. Ask Yourself
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

More game time means he shares more minutes with Bilva and Dilva, not that he’ll get an extended run in the first team especially with UCL going on

      1. ZeBestee
        • 9 Years
        4 years, 6 months ago

It's safe to say he is playing more this season, whether he is above the pecking order remains to be seen. I can genuinely see him becoming one of the main players this season, just like Bernardo was last season. DSilva is more centrally so I don't think he is directly fighting for his place with Mahrez and Bernardo.

        1. Ask Yourself
          • 7 Years
          4 years, 6 months ago

All he’s done is displace Bernardo from the permanent spot. I mean Dilva because Bilva can drop to CM and Mahrez fills in at Bilva’s spot. So every game there will be 2 of the 3 but it’s just a case of having the right one at the right time. Barring a freak GW last week Bilva was the one not to have and the other two have been doing well for a while. Am IB can shuffle the pack though so these are players you have to be careful with as they take up a valuable City slot

I'd stick in your case yes. Similar to me I think with this team we either needed to wc straight off last week or stick to a gradual tinker because its a decent team. I did Zinc to Ota too but I fully understand your reservations.

    Pope
    TAA Ota VVD Guilbert
    Salah Sterling Mount KDB
    Abraham Haller

    Subs: Button, Rico, Dendonker, Greenwood

Do you think in 2-3 GWs time it is worth doing VVD Ota Haller to Diop Tomori Auba?

Obviously idea is to get Auba for Arsenal good fixtures but I sacrifice good defenders. Though WHam have also good fix and may get a fee cleanies. Tomori Im not sure If he will play in the Chelsea good fixs

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

I've got rid on WC, but not because he didn't play last week. I wanted Aguero and KDB and TAA and Firmino and Son, so ditching Salah and Sterling gave my team a really good balance overall.

Same with me. 3 blank captaincies in a row, he’s bound to return this week.

But I wanted Kun and couldn’t justify a -4 for Sterling to Kun.

            WC gave me the opportunity.

Out of interest, if you have Firmino, which of Pukki and Tammy do you not own?

I’ve struggled to look past Aguero Pukki Tammy for at least the next 3.

Kane is overall the best bet for a differential captain IMO. Looked pretty good against Leicester and could easily get double what he got last week. Southampton back off and that should also play into spurs hands

Surely Son is the differential captaincy.

        Son 9% ownership
        Kane 20.5% ownership

Son in form. So he’s both the differential and the better captain.

no I didnt mean that, he looked great last game. I mean he will be in a lot of teams that are now dead, their owners left so his ownership is probably pretty high still. Its the same with Kane at over 20%, I would say realistically only about 5% of people here seem to have Kane.

Even though that's true, i feel most of the owners of Son are, safe to say, regular players looking for differentials. And as for Kane, it seems as if he's been put in during the first two gameweeks and forgetten about, i doubt anyone's got him in the last four. Definitely looks to be the case in my mini league. So in absolute terms, yes Son seems to be more of a differential. But relatively speaking, Son seems to be the major pick for high rankers compared to Kane, so for a high ranker I'd argue Kane is more of a differential of the two.

Has to be Vardy. Would have certainly got him on the WC but for the fact he faces LFC next GW.

As it happens I go with Aguero Pukki Tammy for 2-3 weeks before drafting in Vardy.

I’ll just watch his 8.5% ownership enjoy his goals this weekend, while I hope my boys can come close.

His ownership won't rise by much, despite being dependable he's never a popular pick. I had him since the start of the season and was loathed to get rid of him, it was only on WC because I wanted Auba for his run. I intend to get Vardy & Maddison for son & Pukki after the Liverpool game.

He's a good option and as a United fan I should probably have had him on more occasions. However I find him frustrating, he's regularly injured and still hasn't nailed down what his best position is. If he's a #9 then that's a good FPL asset. At LW I find he tends to drift out of games.

I agree on Maddison to some extent, however he's 22 and I think he's getting better and better. This could really be a breakout year for him. I'm not sure if I want to triple up on Leicester assets but they are flying and they have a good run of games. Perversely they tend to do better against bigger teams than smaller ones, maybe smaller teams sit deeper and reduce space for Vardy to run in behind.

            Out of form ?

He's the top FPL form player and top points scorer.

He's returned in every game, including a 20 minute cameo.

Hes playing in a team that just scored 8 goals, averaging 4 goals per game before that.

Missing a few chances last GW while still returning 9 points and on another day would have had 3-4.

Missing a few chances in 1 GW does not constitute poor form

            6 PL games.
            8 goals
            2 assists.

            Form of his life.

The players around him are in form, he isn’t. 5 BCM last two games and 2 goals 1 being a peno. Lucky he plays for city otherwise he’d be a fraud.

Doesn't matter. People are picking Salah over Mane because of penalties.

And corners and being more greedy yeah fair that. Aguero only makes structural sense in your team with 4 premiums, he’s a bad value pick in 90% of cases for me

No. But I don't think I'd bet for him to score, which is what the captain is about.

based on what? his historic form vs Everton? Everton have not been this poor for a long long time.

Everton are a tough team to beat, they have a good defence which will actually come into use this game. Aguero could still easily score a few actually, but I think I prefer Son as a captain

With all the speculation around Eriksen, it seems Spurs are not exactly in the kind of form that they are usually associated with it, so I am sceptical about placing my armband on him over the likes of Aguero, KDB or Mane

They still beat Palace 4-0. We have to win, Southampton home is a perfect game to do this, it could fail miserably or be a great pick.

Pls correct me if I am wrong but Eriksen did play well in that game and has been out of form since. So I believe much depends on where his head is at, as he is their chief creator. Kane is good but I believe they need Eriksen to bring his A game

      On WC:

      Which one:

A- Sterling + Wesley ( or someone else up to 6.2)
      B- McGinn + Aguero

Just about B, but I'd rather get Sterling and someone slightly better up front.

      2 FT done early this week....Digne & Greenwood -->> Rico & Pukki

Turn Cantwell and Haller into McGinn and Abraham and that's literally the team I want on wildcard. Good work if you've still got your card.

I vote B. Although maybe Haller against a porous Bournemouth defence means he's worth holding onto for one more week.

Oh and minus Barnes. He had a good run but ultimately I think he'll revert to form of being a really average striker playing for Burnley.

Played my WC over last Int break and went with a frontline of Barnes Haller Greenwood 🙁 . Not my finest FPL move.

Form over fixtures from now on. I think i'll give Haller and Barnes this GW and maybe the next one but if they don't sort it out they're gone. Barnes was unlucky not to return last game as he had a stonewall pen not given.
