Captain Sensible

Who is the best captain for FPL Gameweek 7?

The Fantasy Premier League captaincy debate for Gameweek 7 continues to be wide open with a number of candidates all vying to be crowned the best option.

Manchester City and Liverpool both face fixtures that managers are finding hard to predict while Chelsea host Brighton and Spurs go up against a Southampton side with an unreliable defensive unit.

With so many options to consider, the Captain Sensible article is perhaps as important as its ever been.

As we do every single Gameweek, we have assessed the form of the leading candidates and the state of their upcoming opponents’ defences to see which ones tick the most boxes for captain success.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has returned to the summit of the Fantasy Football Scout Captain Poll but for Gameweek 7, his majority is not a particularly sizeable one. This season, the most popular skipper each week has typically pulled in the support of roughly 40% but this weekend, Liverpool’s Egyptian star has just 26.1% of the votes at the time of writing.

He is not in bad form, of course, his assist against Chelsea last time out his seventh attacking return of the campaign after just six matches. Salah has score four goals in total, that assist at Stamford Bridge his seventh of the campaign.

Perhaps what is stopping him from enjoying a true domination of the Captain Poll is the venue of his next match. Preparing for a trip to face Sheffield United, Salah remains goalless on the road this season, all four of his Premier League strikes coming at Anfield in 2019/20 so far.

Furthermore, the Blades may have only kept one clean sheet at Bramall Lane since promotion but they are yet to be thrashed as a Premier League side. Their 3-5-2 system has proved hard to break down on more than one occasion in the last six matches, so it will always be hard for Fantasy managers to predict a goal glut against them.

Looking likely to secure second place in the poll is Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham (£7.5m), who has pulled clear of the chasing pack in the last few days.

Ahead of Brighton’s visit to Stamford Bridge, the centre-forward has been selected as the best captain option by 15.9% of voters in the poll.

That’s not surprising based on Abraham’s form considering that he has scored seven goals in his last four matches, including a hat-trick against Wolves in Gameweek 5.

Next opponents Brighton have had a mixed bag of away fixtures this season, so far keeping clean sheets at goal-shy Watford and Newcastle. However, their only road trip at a top-six side so far resulted in a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, which arguably could have been a heavier defeat.

Support for Abraham has grown in recent days, perhaps influenced by his absence from midweek action and Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) involvement against Preston. On Tuesday, the two Englishman were tied on 12%, but the Chelsea man has pulled clear by 3% since then.

The Manchester City midfielder remains in a similar position, with 11.8% of the votes ahead of a trip to Everton.

Sterling did miss last week’s 8-0 demolition of Watford, and scored at Deepdale in the EFL Cup third round, but neither of those things should count against him for Gameweek 7.

The rest in Gameweek 6 means he is arguably one of the most likely starters at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon and so far this season, he has blanked away from home just once.

Sterling scored a hat-trick at West Ham on the opening weekend and also found the net in the Gameweek 3 trip to Bournemouth. He was also unfortunate not to get any attacking returns when Manchester City lost to Norwich as his header cannoned back off the post and Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m) was close to converting a late cross.

Meanwhile, Everton have not kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 2 when they hosted a struggling Watford side. Since then they have conceded at least twice in every match home and away.

It is surprising then that both Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£9.9m) are both backed by fewer than 10% in our latest captain poll.

Perhaps Fantasy managers are concerned about rotation ahead of next week’s Champions League hosting of Dinamo Zagreb but it seems unlikely that either of them will be benched given that neither played against Preston on Tuesday night.

Aguero is still yet to blank this season, scoring eight goals in six matches and providing two assists too but just 7.6% of the voters in our poll believe he is the best captain for Gameweek 7.

Meanwhile, de Bruyne has the support of just 4.6% after averaging nine points per game so far this season.

Completing the top five options in the poll is Tottenham’s Son Heung-min (£9.7m) who has the backing of 10.3%.

This weekend he faces a home match against Southampton having registered three attacking returns in his last two league outings.

Harry Kane (£11.0m) has also been considered for this match, but only 5.3% of the voters.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Sadio Mané (£11.6m) have the backing of 3.1% and 2.9% ahead of the trip to Sheffield United.

Finally, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Mason Mount (£6.6m) are the only other candidates with more than 1% of the vote.

It feels wrong not to own Aguero for the season and captain him most of the weeks - but i cant take out auba as well....Should I bring in aguero at the expense of Auba? as I just cant captain the later with any confidence even during the easy fixtures for arsenal

I believe Auba is a good enough option for Captaincy with Laca injured and good fixtures. Should be on Pens to now that Pepe has got his goal.

This is another issue with owning Auba, When Laca returns he is going to be placed on the wings.

Isnt laca back after the international break?

Do you think in 2-3 GWs time it is worth doing VVD Ota Haller to Diop Tomori Auba?

    Pope
    TAA Ota VVD Guilbert
    Salah Sterling Mount KDB
    Abraham Haller

    Subs: Button, Rico, Dendonker, Greenwood

*Obviously idea is to get Auba for Arsenal good fixtures but I sacrifice good defenders. Though WHam have also good fix and may get a fee cleanies. Tomori, Im not sure If he will play in the Chelsea good fixs?

Everton defence is a bit of a shambles, Sterling has something to prove after sitting out the Watford whitewash and the team around him (bar a temperamental defence) is in good form rn. He'll start and I am captaining him.

Pep's rotation roulette has been in play for quite a while now and the players seem to be comfortable with it by now, hence maintaining their level of play. So I would have to disagree the point that Sterling has something to prove after sitting out of last game whether it was 3 goals or 4 goals (which happened quite a lot) or 8 goals

        1. ClothedinSun
          • 5 Years

That's a fair point but I get the sense that Pep is fostering a sense of competition too, with B.Silva and Mahrez performing really well in the Watford game and all the praise heaped on Sterling as the heir to Messi-Ronaldo, I'd like to think he will, from a sporting perspective, be looking to pick up the form he showed in the West Ham game and show it consistently over this really nice run of fixtures city have coming up.

Think I did it twice. Leicester where he dived for the penalty then got a jammy 95th min goal; then again vs Huddersfield for the 8 minute cameo and further 95th minute jammy return.

        Maybe just owning is enough.

This week's captaincy is a nightmare. I can pick between like 6 players who are all pretty good shouts.

TAA, Salah, Sterling, KdB, Son, Abraham

I'd be quite happy to captain any of them. I think TAA might be secretly the best pick. SHU had just 1 shot on goal vs Everton. I can't see them scoring unless by some freak mistake. Son could easily get a brace or better, either of the City guys is also good and Abraham has the best fixture and is rested.

Salah meanwhile is top of the captain's poll but I don't like him as much this week. Last season he only had 1 double figure return away from home and SHU are a perfect team for bus parking which makes Salah's pace in behind less effective.

Really ? With Salah vs attacking Leicester. Auba up front vs awful Bournemouth. Pukki at home to dodgy when away Villa too. Adding in your city boys it becomes a nightmare

Leicester might be attacking but they're also quite good defensively.

I don't have Auba so not a concern. Pukki is away, no thanks. So it's an easy City captain for me vs Wolves. Just pick between Sterling or KdB depending on who looks fresher/more nailed on.

Pukki is home ffs !! Salah at home vs Leicester is a dream captain pick in usual circumstances but yeah fair if you think they’ll hold out there that’s fine, I sort of think so too. Wolves are very good vs the top teams despite their poor form this season. The UEL game a few hours before City may sway me to KDB/bringing in sterling but there is not shortage of great options

Owned him for his biggest haul then WC’d him out. Got Auba instead who has since been out scoring him for over 1m cheaper. Think Aguero is overpriced this season but there’s no doubt he offers value to some, just not my team.

    Pope - 4.0
    TAA - Soyuncu - Ota - Rico - Lundstram
Salah - Felipe Anderson - Mount - KDB - Cantwell

Is Aurier worth the slight rotation risk over Soyuncu?

We say Poch likes to rotate his full backs yet Rose has started every PL game so far. Neither Rose or Aurier started against Olympiacos or Colchester in midweek.

Tammy today. Not that impressed by Salah this season. Could be a bit of a stumble tomorrow. SHU will be confident and tricky at home in the early. Sterling could start. Could play 30 minutes. Could sit it out again. Could. Tammy has no real competition - no chance Batushai starts. They were ok against Liverpool and a marginal 1mm VAR decision away from a point there. Think Lamps has got something in that team set up with Kante back. If I had him I'd start Kane. But Tammy (c) and KDB (vc) feels like the right choice.

No. Tammy starts. Lampard is quite predictable. Watched him all season with DCFC. He'll favours secure starting 11 over rotation - even with a bit of height in the Brighton defence.

Nothing to lose with Tomori IMO. Good fixtures if he can keep his place - and no big deal if you have to move him on in a few weeks (assuming Rico/Lundy are bench)

I'd captain Kun if I had him I think.
