Spot the Differential

Three Gameweek 6 goalscorers have FPL differential potential

Once again the differentials stole the show as three players with an ownership of 3% or less ended up among the top six points-scorers for Gameweek 6.

This demonstrates that there’s more out there than having to plod along with the standard template team. Of note, Nicolas Pépé (£9.4m) did this column proud as he took and scored a penalty for Arsenal, thus ensuring that at least one of our differentials per week has delivered a Fantasy return since the opening weekend.

Can we continue the run? Here are three low-owned players to take into account for Gameweek 7:

Andriy Yarmolenko

Price: £5.9m
Ownership: 1.0%
GW7 opponent: Bournemouth (a)

There aren’t many midfielders priced at £6.0m or less that have the pedigree to score goals on a fairly regular basis and, going by the form book, it’s becoming hard to ignore Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m).

Had it not been for a serious injury last October, he would have been a mainstay in West Ham’s team during the last campaign. His international acumen is also very respectable, with 36 goals in 81 senior appearances for Ukraine. He’s scored two goals in his last three Premier League games and is the Hammers’ joint-second outfield FPL points-scorer, despite not playing at all during Gameweek 1.

Barring any injuries, Yarmolenko ought to be a regular starter. The fact that he has yet to play a full match since his return is a minor concern but also unsurprising as a way of him being managed accordingly.

He’s playing in an advanced role, as you would expect, with 83 of his 160 touches from the final third. West Ham are due to face Bournemouth this weekend, who have yet to keep any clean sheets. This should bode well for Yarmolenko as both he and Sebastien Haller (£7.4m) will look to exploit the vulnerabilities in the Cherries’ backline.

Chris Wood

Price: £6.2m
Ownership: 0.8%
Gameweek 7 opponent: Aston Villa (a)

Prior to last weekend, you would have been forgiven to think that Ashley Barnes (£6.6m) was the only striker leading the line for Burnley this season. After all, Chris Wood (£6.2m) had failed to register any attacking returns until his brace at Carrow Road.

Priced at £0.4m less than Barnes and with considerably lower ownership, Wood is an alternative option into Burnley’s attack.

Despite having 11 fewer shots on goal than Barnes this season, he boasts a better shooting accuracy than him (50% v 43%). Looking at last season, Wood only scored two fewer league goals than his strike partner and you would expect them to complement each other up top.

Like Barnes, Wood has started every league game this season so in theory shouldn’t be at risk of rotation. This is all the more apparent as Burnley don’t have any European commitments this season and were knocked out of the League Cup in August.

Between now and Gameweek 14, the Clarets have a generous fixture run during which they only face one team that finished in the top five last season. This could act as a platform for Wood to score more goals.

Of course, he’s never scored more than ten goals in a Premier League campaign but due to the reasons stated he can be a potential short-term option in the weeks ahead.

Wesley Moraes

Price: £6.0m
Ownership: 1.8%
GW7 opponent: Burnley (h)

Aston Villa were unlucky not to get a positive result against Arsenal having been 2-1 up until the final ten minutes of the match.

The Villans have so far scored six Premier League goals this season and that’s in no small part due to Wesley Moraes (£6.0m).

Among strikers priced at £6.0m or under, none have had more shots on target than him (seven) and he is joint-top in that bracket for goals scored (two) since Gameweek 1. Unless Aston Villa sign someone during the January transfer window, he should be their main striker until the end of the season – which also makes him a viable option.

Despite receiving ample support from the likes of Jack Grealish (£5.9m) and John McGinn (£5.7m), the concern so far for Villa has been their lack of goals scored, which has been costly and is partly why they currently are 18th in the table.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. If they are going to score, Wesley will be possibly involved in some shape or form. They could very easily double their goals tally in their next three league games against Burnley, Norwich and Brighton.

This could serve as a potential platform for Wesley to become the next bandwagon if more of his shots on target can be converted into goals.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 6:

Those thinking of drafting in Aubameyang, surely Pépé is the all round better pick?

It may be better value but as it stands Auba is proving to be the better option. Lacazette in the middle flanked by and Pèpè, i think that combination could favour the latter one, but relying on Emery to start those 3 every game, just forget it. Emery has some very good managerial seides but he does also seems to be overthinking and pragmatic, which never makes the team settles.

After some terrible luck with captains since GW1, I've decided to take a more relaxed approach: semi permacap on Salah or Sterling for blocks of good fixtures, regardless of who scored what the previous game. I consider both to have two seasons of form and stats so far, so this decision is more likely to change if they get injured or fall out of favour:

          GWs 7 to 11: Sterling C
GW12: Pukki C (or anybody else. Open wide)
          GWs 13 to 18: Salah C
          GWs 19 to 24: Sterling C
          GWs 25 to 31: Salah C

And then the DGW madness. KDB as VC through most of it. I know the drawbacks of such long term plans: Son could become the best captain. Tammy and Mount could make serious claims. Vardy's lurking... Please note that this plan is open to modification as the season goes on, but it removes a huge weekly headache and source of hindsight self-punishment

I was thinking I'd do that. Cap Salah every game except vs top 6 team. But his current form is pretty poor and his away record last season was pretty poor (only 1 double figure score away from home all season). Would rather just take it week by week and decide on who I think is best. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but at least I made the best decision with the information given to me and I won't feel bad about that.

That's how I started the season. It was mentioned somewhere on a scout cast or captaincy video that the reasons for Sterling (C) this GW are right, but they might only come into play next GW instead, and with Salah as well. Going permacap on one makes the other a bit too expensive for my squad, so I'm splitting it into blocks of fixtures instead

The Always Cheating podcast made a good point on this in their pod this week - there's actually no such thing as a perma captain, because however you look at it every week you're deciding to captain someone. If that's the same player then you're still deciding each week that you think they're your best option.

It does make sense, every week is an individual decision on an indivual event. You decide that Salah vs man city is the best option because you want to avoid the variability of performance across a number of fixtures, and therefore think he is just as likely to score more than another option that week as indivual returns based on fixtures are pretty random.

perma-captaining just means you are permanently captaining someone, that's all it is.

There are some decisions I don't make every GW, even though I could. I could consider Lund a starter every GW but decide to bench him. This wasn't happening before but will start happening from GW7. I could go with two GKs and rotate per GW but I decided to start with and keep Pope. Heck, there was the option of going with a different GK from GW1 and then buying Pope for the good fixtures, but I chose to set and forget

We do make some decisions every GW, yes. But there are some aspects of my squad that I keep in a (semi) zombie-like state

perma captain could be thought of as just literal meaning, it stays on one player without moving anywhere-), but yes you are making the choice every week. You choose not to is in the same mould as choose to do

Looking at the next pool fixtures they aren't so bad as everyone thinks. On current form Utd is a threat to noone and they have Spurs at home. The only thing is derby with City and then they go on their great run. So keep ditching Mo/Mane, I approve this, even better for ua who owns them. Also other teams have great runs (such as Spurs, Ars, Che and Lei) so double City sounds impressive but there are so many options currently. Good luck to everyone whatever you choose!

Great comment. That being said I went Mane -> Son this GW for next 3. Think it will pay off as will captain Son GWs 7+9. Wouldn't want to cap Mane this GW or against Man Utd

thinking along the same line here

and Son for example, good next three but then pool. Is Mané´s fixture home to Spurs worse than Son´s away to Pool? And really, SHU away, Leicester home, United away, looks pretty winnable and high scoring games for me. People still think that Spurs/united/Chelsea are at same level as Pool so when a team have played them and played well they seem to think that will translate, but Pool at Anfield is much more difficult than the previous teams. Liverpool will outscore every team bar City up and including their meeting in GW13.

I also think this, Pool and City are a different world for everyone else in the PL and at all times you should own at least one city and one pool asset no mather what are the fixtures. I would love if I could have two of them at all time but is too unbalanced and there are other heavy hitters around which are worth having even if they play for weaker sides cause they ares still great players.

If you want the one who does most of the things, get King-)
Callum Wilson is a striker in Lineker mould, he just tends to be where the balls go, so unlike people who just moans about stats and saying it won´t last, it will last. As long as he can stay healthy that is. So if you want points, get Wilson

Dilva to Kdb for -4 or just wait until next week? Dilva did play in the cup, if I'm not mistaken, which kinda worries me with Pep and his rotation.

Subbed off at 60. His competition for his place Bilva, Gundogan and Foden all played the full 90 in the cup. Dilva 99% certain to start this weekend not worth the -4 do for free next

Going to have to get rid of Haller for Abraham this week. I know Haller could punish me, but with Abraham's ownership any goals could drastically affect my already pitiful rank.

Go for it, especially if its free. I have Haller but I'd have to use a hit to get in Abraham so I'm not its worth it. Brighton look terrible though 🙁

There's often a lot of talk on here about whether hits are worth it, and it's concerning that even the "experts" often don't seem to know how it works.

This is from the FPL Question Time article - "West Ham still have a good fixture run ahead and it does seem a bit premature to sell Haller so suddenly. After all, Abraham also blanked last weekend and if you were to switch them for a hit, you would have to somehow hope that Abraham scored a brace and gets maximum bonus points to make it worthwhile (and for Haller to blank), which all seems a bit risky."

Sorry but that's just completely incorrect. If Abraham scores a brace and get max bonus he'll be on 13 points (9 after the hit) and if Haller blanks he'll get 2. So you'd be up by 7 points, which is a lot for a transfer after only week.

Ultimately if the player you swap out only gets 2 points then you need your transfer to get 6 to break even that same week (i.e. one goal, or an assist and bonus) - and that's only considering the effect the same week rather than over the next few.

if a player is a genuine upgrade then they are almost always worth a -4 imo, of course that gameweek it may backfire but it's longer term that matters. Of course you can wait a week and do it for free, but that relies on you not getting an injury/suspension or whatever

Yeah I completely agree, especially if you're catching price rises too that could otherwise mean you couldn't get them in the following week.

For this week I have done Ederson, Digne and Wickham to Pope, Soyuncu and Abraham (-4), which even if it doesn't work out this week I'm very pleased with for the next 4-6 GWs.

I also believe that hits should be done when you want multiple players - I got Aurier, Son and Tammy this week for a -4, I see it as -1.3 per player and if Montoya, Ayew and Sterling outscore them then so be it - but I know my team is better overall (switched to one premium mid-Mo)

I take some hits during the season and to be completely earnest with you it´s because i lack skills in this game and being too inpatient at times. But when i do them it´s always with longer term planning in mind so very seldom i think i will get points back at once. A hit can also be part of a strategy to do planned moves next week etc which you then perhaps must have taken a hit for then anyway (or not afford if money is an issue). I have made hits that have really paid off and i have did some that did not, some that proved well founded in terms of future plans and some that don´t.

What they probably mean is that breaking even doesn't gain you anything, so it makes no difference if you don't make the transfer. So you have to hope you get a profit, which is only if he scores more than one goal and Haller blanks. That said, hits don't have to pay off the same week. They usually pay off within a few weeks if it's the right move.

Yeah I agree - but it's very overstated. In the example above all you need is Haller to blank and Abraham to score with one bonus point and you're up, and have a better player long term. You don't need a brace a max bonus...

Yeah, I don't know why they mentioned max bonus. That's just bad maths. 😀
