Lampard confirms Chelsea’s first-choice penalty-taker as Abraham blanks

Chelsea secured an important 2-0 victory over Graham Potter’s Brighton and Hove Albion to maintain their promising start to the 2019/20 Premier League season.

We discuss the main Fantasy talking points in our Scout Notes article below.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton and Hove Albion

  • Goals: Jorginho (£5.0m), Willian (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Mason Mount (£6.6m), Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.9m)
  • Bonus Points: Jorginho x3, Willian x2, Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.9m), Fikayo Tomori (£4.6m), Mat Ryan (£4.5m) x1

After a disappointing defeat to Liverpool last weekend, Frank Lampard’s side responded in excellent fashion with goals from Jorginho (£5.0m) and Willian (£7.0m) proving to be enough to ensure the Blues collected all three points in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful.

A home fixture against a side who had not won since the opening day was understandably an appealing fixture for those managers in ownership of Tammy Abraham (£7.5m) and Mason Mount (£6.6m), but Chelsea’s attacking assets were unable to fully capitalise, despite an assist for Mount after he was fouled by Adam Webster (£4.4m) in the Brighton penalty area.

Mount continues to impress as a value-for-money option in Chelsea’s midfield, having recorded attacking returns in four of the seven league games he has started this season. His performance in the victory over Brighton rewarded those managers who had brought in the 20-year-old as well as those who had owned the midfielder from the early stages of the season.

Yet whilst Mount has had his share of the headlines so far in 2019/20, it has been Abraham who had been dominating Chelsea’s opponents with his goalscoring prowess. Saturday’s victory saw the former Aston Villa loanee fail to get on the scoresheet for the second successive game, despite having scored seven goals in three appearances in Gamweek’s 3 to 5.

There can be no doubting of the fact that Abraham’s performances against Norwich, Sheffield United and Wolves were exceptional.

But the 21-year-old was arguably over-performing relative to his expected attacking returns, and blanks against Liverpool and now Brighton are a timely reminder to managers in ownership of the striker that whilst he is an extremely promising asset, he does not offer the same level of goalscoring consistency as premium striking options such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) or Sergio Aguero (£12.2m)

An interesting narrative that emerged from the victory over Brighton was with regards to Chelsea’s penalty-taking duties. Despite Lampard’s comments after the Valencia game a fortnight ago, it was Jorginho (£5.0m) who took the penalty after Mount was fouled.

When asked in his post-match press conference, Lampard responded in blunt fashion to whether Jorginho was now Chelsea’s first-choice penalty taker:

Yes he is, end of story.

Lampard further praised Jorginho’s performance and his credentials as a leader on the pitch:

He’s a leader on the pitch, I’m pleased with him. Young players can look up to him.

This was a first clean sheet of the season for Chelsea, which will be extremely pleasing to managers in ownership of their defensive assets and particularly for those who had moved for Fikayo Tomori (£4.6m), who put in another assured performance at the heart of the Blues’ defence.

Tomori has now emerged as one of Chelsea’s first-choice options at the back, with Lampard admitting in midweek that the 21-year-old is now first or second choice in central defence.

With fixtures against Southampton, Newcastle and Burnley to come in their next three, investment in Tomori as a budget defender with attacking potential – as shown against Wolves – could be a shrewd acquisition for managers looking to acquire defensive coverage from Chelsea.

This was also an impressive team performance from a defensive perspective given the absence of N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) from the starting XI, yet Lampard allayed any concern that the Frenchman could be out for an extended spell.

I didn’t want to take the risk. It’s been difficult for him.

Though for all of Chelsea’s promising attacking play, this was yet another disappointing result for Potter and Brighton despite starting the season with an emphatic performance against Watford. Given the Hornets’ demise since the opening day, it would appear that the job Potter has on his hands is significantly larger than first thought and perhaps the merits of that victory have been marred by the extremely poor form of Watford.

The Seagulls did show attacking promise at Stamford Bridge, namely through Neal Maupay (£6.0m) who had a number of mazy runs into the Chelsea defence, yet they simply lacked any substantial final product and are now winless since that opening day victory at Vicarage Road.

Brighton were dominated by Chelsea from the outset, and whilst defensive assets such as Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) have attracted investment from some managers in the opening stages of the 2019/20 campaign, their current form and upcoming fixtures (Spurs, Villa, Everton) suggest that the Seagulls are not a side who managers will be flocking to in searching for budget defensive coverage in their backlines.

But for all of Brighton’s inconsistencies, this was a game that yet again highlighted the growing viability of Mount and Tomori as attacking and defensive assets respectively, and despite not getting on the scoresheet, Abraham’s performance points to a player who is bound to back in the goals for Lampard’s side in the coming weeks.

Yes if you play 3 at the back and one of the 3 is TAA you have no problem to be concerned.

This is it. It hasn't been optimal value so far but it's there or thereabouts and when the tide turns you'll be the one scooping 30 odd points while others scrabble to restructure and are forced to use valuable FT'S and hits. If I owned three I'd be sitting happy. I own two and it's always on my mind how and when to bring in the third

Easy to say in hindsight. Unless you played all these defenders in all these weeks, it means nothing. The problem is, these are all hard to predict.

Agreed. The pool of premium defenders has shrunk alarmingly this year, but Liverpool are still only a hop and a skip away from blasting in front of all these cheap options. Enjoy them for what they are, try to capitalise on one as an 11th player or first bench, buy buy the magic beans and the tide WILL go out and you WILL be standing there naked with your bits out

My take is 1 City (GK), 2 Liverpool and 3 cheapies; Soyuncu, Lundstram & Tomori who rotate well. If Tomori loses his place he'll be transferred to Rice.

Hard to beat TAA & Ota at the minute for what they’re offering

No harm at all in accompanying them with a Robbo/VVD either

Looks like budgets may be surplus again this year so the money needs to go somewhere (I.e., Mount, Tammy, KDB, Son, Pukki, Wilson, Vardy, even now the likes of CHO etc - before you even get near Cantwell, Lundy, and the 4.0 stocking fillers - none of these are bank busters)

I'm mightily skeptical of Ota and decided when I ditched Digne to do a price point sideways to Ricardo. Watching that city box from corners was pretty tragic

for sure. Lowton and Ward have got me lovely returns these past 2 weeks. Moving onto West Ham defence now, Freds and Diop for the next 4. Hopefully 2 CS there.

TAA, Robbo & VVD already being 3 of the top 6 defenders, with a massive defensive upgrade still to come in the form of Allison

Intruigingly - all are offering at least as much (more in TAA’s case) value per million as Salah - and all are also offering better value per million than Sterling, Mane, Kane & Auba believe it or not

Not a surprise at all. Their value was astonishing last year and they're still underpriced.

This is why I've not got an attacking player from Liverpool. Doesn't make sense with other comparible options up front but none in defence

        Better option?

        A) VVD ➡️ Soyuncu (Can do Barnes to Vardy/Wilson)

        B) AWB ➡️ Soyuncu (Can do Barnes to Wilson)

        Rest of the defence:

Even I'm leaning towards the VVD move. If double up on Pool def I anyways prefer Robbo.

I am tbh.. Now that kdb is a captaincy option from city spending extra on sterling also seems a bit much. Considering sterling to mahrez and Barnes to auba.. And captaining auba/salah/kdb every week and taking mahrez benchings on the chin. Started and starred in the last 2.. So even though he was benched earlier I can see him starting 3 of the next 4 which seems good enough for his price.

Will Kun start if he plays CL? Not even Pep's presser will confirm this.

Now that Jesus has started ahead of Kun this GW I am not going to want to cap Kun unless I am 100% sure he will start. Expensive mistake.

No City atracking asset is guarenteed to start as Pep wants to win the CL. Something which he has failed to do with City.

Maybe. Read/heard before this gw that Kepa had the worst save % in the league (let in 1 in 4 shots). xG against 5 fewer than conceded. Didn't see the Brighton game to gauge any difference

xgc doesnt directly infer likelyhood of keeper saving the shot

I am not doing CHE defence. Like Mount in my midfield.

Not a chance of double or triple up on CHE.

McGinn, please go have a look at his price and show me another mid other than Mount at 6.0 to 7.0 worth having.

I have tried to avoid making hectic transfers since realising the differentiator with teams around me actually the captaincy … kind of simplifying the game? But making it harder to predict? 😉

Same here. Harder to predict at the moment definitely, but the philosophy remains the same - stick to simple rather than try to overthink and it should come good ... see you on the other side

Did an earlu transfer last night. Dunk -> Soy because he was at 90+ and still rising. Had just enough itb to do the transfer. Did not understand why people was desperate to bring him in before the Pool the game. Now he is at 60 and going further down. Could have saved my FT. But why on earth are people transfering him out, when Leicester have great fixtures after Pool?

I'm frustrates rn. Waste of an early transfer. If injuries occur I today/during midweek I might need to take a hit.

A)VVD to Lundstram to fund Dendoncker to McGinn/Yarmolenko next week
B)Rico to Lundstram, keep VVD and play him.

I also have TAA, A would mean having to play 1 of Dendoncker/Greenwood only for next GW

Rico was excellent yesterday.. And looked dangerous at ever creating chances for fun. I think it's officially his place to lose now.

Not really.. Bmouth were really good. Apart from 2 mistakes.. Which they conceded from. Either way Rico @4.0 looks a bargain.

I don't see that happening if Rico plays the way he has and if Kelly doesn't drastically improve after his terrible showing in the cup. Can only see Kelly getting a chance if Rico really messes up..course, that could happen but as of now Rico looks like first choice.

Looking at shipping Salah to fund Barnes > Aubamayang.

                        1. Salah > Son.
Only leaves 0.3 itb after Barnes > Aubamayang

                        2. Salah > Yarmolenko Or McGinn
                        Leaves 4m + itb .
Opening up options like Pukki > Vardy,Firmino Or Wilson.

Salah no rotation or benchings. If he continues to score at his current points per game then mistake. Guess you have Sterling who is not guarenteed a start just like any other City attacking asset for this coming GW 🙂

Anyone who owns Salah and isn't planning to get rid will tell you not to get rid.

The fact is that he's the most expensive player in the game and for about 45 games now nobody has actually been able to make any kind of solid argument for him being essential.

People are split down the middle between people who are happy to have a sub-optimal value player who offers remarkable consistency and a high overall score.

On the other hand people recognise that the RIGHT investments elsewhere in more optimal value players yields a higher potential return, but may come with more risk.

It all comes down to whether you want to just set and forget a decent striker, or pit your wits against him to do better

What about switching Sterling to Mahrez? It is risky but i feel that Mahrez starts to have the confidence of Guardiola and he is really playing well at the moment. It would free me up some money to switch also Cantwell to Mount and improve the next week one of my forward player.

my team has such nice fixtures next week, think I will just save my transfer for now?
The areas I do want to address soon, next week or week after are:
Need TAA, Mount, & want Yarmolenko or McGinn for Cantwell. Any other suggestions? Will have to downgarade Mane or Kane to facilitate most of the above.

                              Lunds(wat) - Ota(WOL) - Lowton(EVE)
                              Son(bha) - KDB(WOL) - Mane(LEI) - Cantwell(AVL)
                              Pukki(AVL) - Kane(bha) - Auba(BOU)

Not easy to suggest much without seeing your bench. TAA can wait until GW13 if you've survived this far without him. With 5 premiums, I don't see any reason to want to lose Cantwell or get TAA and keep any sort of balance. Choosing the premium to sell is tough, but your team could work as it is for 3 more GWs or so

im probably keeping this structure until Spurs have Pool and take Kane out prior to that game. (k)ane until then. Bench pretty weak, just rotating it. Cantwell is just too poor in away games to be starting for me week in week out, need Yarlo or McGinn instead 100%.

                                  the bench is

With that bench... Your funds are trapped in the XI, tbh. At least you don't have a bench headache 😀

Cantwell will score or assist in one away game and the fear would end. Or you'll get enough from the home games to enjoy good value anyway. Not a reason to sell as things stand

contemplating both Cantwell and Pukkis position in my team if im honest..
If no return @ home against villa they both might be on the chopping board, cantwell for sure. If no return in that game then the party officially over I think. Yea bench is ass lol but it plays \o/

Rico needed to start often? Nope. I guess you're switching to 3-4-3 with this... So, yeah

Surely Otamendi is a much better pick? It’s not costing me any points, and I can’t see any other upgrades for the rest of my team.

No, Otamendi is not. It's more of a sideways move than you'll let yourself realize. Easier to go without Chelsea defence at all and just go Aurier to Otamendi since you can clearly afford it. Don't fix what isn't broken (and also has good fixtures until GW 14

Get those moves done - you have Pope which is more than enough Burnley defence

If repriced today Ota would be minimum 6.5 & Tomori minimum 5.5 - lots of value there

Wow. So many FPL midfielders look better than Son now, after the mental gymnastics I was doing to try to fit him in after GW5

Two weeks ago I was 20k thinking I'm in there finally. Last week had my first red arrow went to 107k first time being out of top 100k another red arrow this week 129k with everyone having similar teams now trying to take out Salah or Sterling to gain rank that would be silly Is it safely say my hope reaching top 1k is over?

That’s a good rank for now, you can rise as quickly as you fell. No need to take big risks, but back yourself if you think someone like sterling or Salah isn’t value. One thing I’ve come to think over the last couple of years is that ‘playing it safe’ can be just as damaging to rank as going against the grain

Thank you for the great advice been playing it safe not taking hits

Probably the most reliable way to play. I have Salah and sterling and sticking for now. But I do think we trick ourselves into thinking ‘we’re safe as long as we keep them’ and then 10 weeks later you realise you haven’t made any ground and have potentially slipped... Sounds like you’re playing well though and patience should reward you!

Hard to get into top 1k with a slightly slow start but it’s early days.
