Wilson avoids blank yet again as mid-price FPL assets impress

Four goals were shared by two in-form teams at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, with plenty to interest Fantasy managers on the south coast.

Our Scout Notes article below recaps the best of the action.

Bournemouth 2-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Callum Wilson (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) | Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m), Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m)
  • Assists: Nathan Ake (£4.9m), King | Sebastien Haller (£7.4m), Felipe Anderson (£6.9m)
  • Bonus: King x3, Yarmolenko x2, Ake x1

A highly entertaining encounter at Bournemouth ended equal as Callum Wilson‘s (£7.9m) remarkable run of returns continued and Andriy Yarmolenko (£5.9m) reiterated his growing attacking threat.

The Cherries frontman scored his side’s second goal on Saturday to make it seven straight Gameweeks with a haul to his name.

His 46 points to date has only been bettered by two strikers, and four players overall, in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

And after a less-is-more performance in Gameweek 6’s win at Southampton, in which he scored from his only shot of the match, Wilson was much busier against West Ham.

In truth, Wilson could, and should, have produced more points than the six he eventually managed.

He failed to convert one especially golden opportunity when clean through as substitute goalkeeper Roberto (£4.4m) pulled off a good save, and VAR declined to award him a penalty following a late tussle in the box with Aaron Cresswell (£4.9m).

But with a decent set of fixtures to come over the next six Gameweeks – even Arsenal away and a visit from Manchester United will hold few fears for him – it would be no surprise if Wilson’s ownership surpasses its current 11.5% level.

Maximum bonus on the day went to his teammate Josh King (£6.3m), who swept home when a cross deflected off Nathan Ake (£4.9m) and into his path. The goal was originally deemed offside, only for VAR, after a lengthy, spirit-of-football-sapping delay, to correct the error.

The Norway international then played in Wilson to give Bournemouth the lead after the break.

King, with 8.4% ownership, has played second Fantasy fiddle to his fellow forward so far this season, but he has now produced two goals and three assists – a solid return for a player a full £1.6m cheaper than his team-mate.

With Ryan Fraser (£7.2m) sidelined because of illness, King again lined up on the left wing of a 4-4-2 – although whether the Scot would have been anything other than a substitute anyway after the Cherries’ recent form without him is another question.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe was fairly pleased with his side’s performance.

It’s too early to make assumptions about where we’ll finish, but in terms of our general play and how the team sets up, I do think there’s more to come from us. It doesn’t mean we have to concede at the other end, it’s not an excuse for conceding. We have to tighten up in that respect as we can’t have to score three to win.

That nod to the Cherries’ defensive fragility once again highlighted the perilous nature of owning members of their backline.

Bournemouth have kept precisely zero clean sheets this season and only two teams have coughed up more attempts than the 118 they’ve allowed, although Arsenal (on 110) might run that figure close by the end of Monday night.

As a result, the team’s two most popular Fantasy defenders, Ake (11.9%) and the 10.8%-owned Diego Rico (£4.1m), have only held their own thanks to attacking returns and, in the latter’s case, a bargain bucket price tag.

The defensive outlook might be brighter with a stalling Norwich, Watford and Newcastle to come in the next few weeks, but a change in the schedule from Gameweek 16, when they’ll have to face Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea in the space of four fixtures, means that only Wilson and King remain overly attractive options.

The same cannot be said of West Ham who, after a so-so start, are providing good returns at both ends of the pitch.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men came into the match on a three-game run of clean sheets, prompting 134,852 managers to bring in Lukasz Fabianski (£5.1m), who is joint-top of the goalkeeper’s chart with 32 points.

He managed only one point and 33 minutes at Bournemouth, however, as he injured his hip taking a goal-kick.

Pellegrini hedged his bets about the issue post-match:

Lukasz felt a problem in a muscle in his hip when he tried to kick the ball. We need to know more about it with a medical examination. Goalkeeper is an important player, but I trust a lot in Roberto also. Roberto played well, he’s a very good goalkeeper and we will see what will happen with Lukasz’s injury and how many weeks he will be out.

Using coveted transfer slots on goalkeepers is never high on a Fantasy manager’s list of priorities, but 6.8% of them might be forced into action sometime this week, with a straight swap to Roberto at least freeing up some funds.

Transfers involving other West Ham assets could well be on the minds of many more managers than that, though.

Cresswell scored for the second week running and is a reliable dead-ball specialist, while fellow full-back Ryan Fredericks (£4.5m) recovered from a knock to start his seventh straight match and has been a model of consistency at a competitive price.

But it is in midfield where the Hammers have talent in abundance, with Yarmolenko the pick of a burgeoning crop.

The Ukraine international had double the penalty area touches of any other midfielder at the Vitality Stadium, and he scored for the second week running when he controlled Sebastien Haller‘s (£7.4m) touch, half turned Ake and curled the ball into the net.

His manager was fulsome in his praise after the game, saying:

He’s a very special player, he’s always had goals in his complete career. He was very unlucky that at his best moment last season he had an Achilles tendon injury but he’s returned and worked very hard. I’m very happy for him as he’s not only scoring, but working very hard.

With three goals from the last four Gameweeks, Yarmolenko has form, fixtures and a generous value going for him.

And the fact that he’s currently only owned by 1.8% also marks him out as a differential candidate, although that figure is already on the rise as he is currently one of the top five transfer targets for Gameweek 8.

Three other West Ham midfielders caught the eye on Saturday, with Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) and Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) both creating two chances and Pablo Fornals (£6.1m) three.

Fornals and Anderson registered seven shots between them but it was the Brazilian – so often seen as a Fantasy troll – who ended up as the best of the trio when he provided the assist for Cresswell’s second-half equaliser.

That made it back-to-back assists – and three for the season – for Anderson, although that might not be enough to persuade those managers who have been stung by his previous taste for inconsistency.

And when Yarmolenko is the cheapest option of all four, if it’s West Ham attacking options you’re after, he looks to be the strongest candidate by a country mile.

Haller’s assist, meanwhile, was his first return since Gameweek 4. But his 5.1% ownership might be concerned that he created twice as many chances as he had shots, particularly as there are a number of more productive forwards available in his mid-range price bracket.

Whatever the option Fantasy managers eventually choose, now looks to be a good time to try and catch the West Ham wave.

They are, after all, a side in a Champions League spot, with six goals scored and only two conceded over the past four Gameweeks, and a good run of fixtures to come before November’s final international break of the year.

Another marvellous weekend... My team prior to WC would have scored 58 points. Instead, I am sat on 39 points after my WC. Unless Auba nets a 20-pointer tonight, this WC could have waited a week!

Pukki looks like a home team player as does all of Norwich. Wood seems to be the main man in Burnley now so barnes gets Everton then he is out of my team never to return again.

How long till Barnes is the main man again? Its crazy how Barnes got all the goals while wood completed blanked, and not it's the opposite. It's as if they are incapable of sharing points

Unlucky with King. Vardy never disappoints if you stick and prime time to get him back. Expecting Pukki to do much away from home is dodgy, lucky he gave that 11 pointer vs City.

I know vardy had to go so I could afford KDB, biggest mistake in hindsight was expensive defenders from the get go hindering my attack

Think I'm going to keep Pukki for a little longer as he is the main man at Norwich and if they score at home/away he is likely to be involved.

Sick of Barnes now tbh. Last gameweek in my team will be upgrading him to Vardy/Wilson in GW9.

If you could get only one of these attackers from GW9 onwards:

Vardy in a more attacking team, but Wilson has better four upcoming fixtures to explode and 1.0 cheaper. Maddison is also a good choice if you spend the remaining funds in a wise way. In longer horizon, LEI asset looks better, coz you will hold Vardy/Maddison till gw17.

Yup I agree with your thinking here. I like Wilson's short term fixtures better than Vardy's but the Leicester attackers are more long term options.

Problem is if I get Maddison the money will remain invested in VVD & AWB which I don't think is a wise way to spend the money saved.

Thinking about taking a little risk and losing Kun for Auba. (Own Sterling and KDB also).

Auba (BOU, shu, CPL) is an unreal set of fixtures and Kun could be prone to rest/early substitutions with CL fixtures and Jesus more than capable of filling in on occasion.

    Thoughts?

It is not that big of a risk if you have Sterling and KDB as well. I would do it. Auba is in really good form. Be mindful though that Lacazette is due to come back which will likely push Auba on the wing, instead of a central role - might lessen his returns a bit.

I have always been in the never sell salah camp but think I will rethink, Auba and vardy as attackers in wildcard team is very tempting but then salah/sterling must go

I think it makes sense to have atleast one of Salah or Mane or Sterling. Easy to switch between those 3 when needed. And I still fancy those 3 to outscore all other premiums.

yeah probably but with arsenal and Leicester coming fixtures I think you could make some ground going for them over salah/sterling. Wont get rid of both but downgrade one of them to Son for example

Yup I have already done that got Son over Liverpool attacker and kept Sterling for now. Plan is to get Vardy upfront in GW9.

I read here a lot of people suggesting to sell Salah and many more actually go for it as well. I intend to keep him and prefer him ever so slightly over Sterling due to the fact that if I am paying 12-12.5m ish for a player I want them to play every week and not run the risk of being benched. Could be a wrong way of looking at it I suppose...

Salah is nailed yes, but currently has has +/- 10 pts more than players that cost 3-5 m less than him.

        Thats no good.

I see your point. You can say the same about Sterling though for sure? Sterling has scored even less points overall and costs a similar amount. If it was a 50/50 toss-up between 2 premium players who score similarly and cost similarly, surely you would go for the one who starts every game?

In terms of ppm, no one gets close to KDB so far this season so great pick. I am going forward with KDB and Salah. Not claiming that this is the only way to go, but in my opinion so far Salah's ppm isn't as bad as compared to the other premiums - third best I think after KDB and Kun. Who knows what happens by the end...

I think James + Tammy will score more than Vardy + Donkey. Vardy is a great player, but Tammy has the fixtures as well and James scores the occasional. Donkey is 2pts every week (when he doesn't OG)

      Enablers:
These guys allow us to have as much money on the pitch as possible.
At the moment we have 2 "a" grade, Lundstum and Cantwell and 2 "b" graders, Kelly and Rico. It can be argued there are others but my look upon the subject is they are the lowest priced assets that have asset value. Obviously to become an enabler, the chances are they have risen slightly in price.
When these guys gain this status, do you:
      a) Treat them like any other player who will generally play?
      b) Still view them as fodder and permanently leave them on you bench?
      c) Move the "a" grades on for the profit and move down to "b"?

It can be argued Cantwell and Lundstrum are part of your main 11 but it is weird how few treat them this way. Rotation time atm and they come in handy one way or the other. It could be argued outside of the right captain choices, getting lucky from the bench is the best rank improver this year.

Lundstram for me will start all games bar liv and mci. Has very high goal threat. Cantwell will be for home games. Still hard to bench specially next week. Cantwell has home game with avl while lundstram has game with the worst team in the league right now.

It does equate to a quandary though. I stare ar Cantwell on my bench with a home game and would have to put him in for:
Bobby Abraham Pukki Son Sterling KDB and McGinn.

I think TAA is ditchable for the upcoming five gws. But you are right, it's altogether 2 FT if you will get him back later.

If you tend to ditch Ota and Barnes, how about Tomori & Callum Wilson?

Yup. That's the alternative.. Leaning towards that tbh. Wod rather lose ota than Sterling anyway I think

Ota is sellable if it facilitate Barnes to Wilson while you can have Tomori. About Sterling, he is a must own in terms of such MC fixture.

C with Tomori and Vardy if possible? If not Kelly for sure. Personal opinion though.

0.3 short actually.. So it's 4.3 defender and Vardy or Tomori and Wilson.. Would've loved even Guilbert and Vardy but annoyingly 0.1 short.

Kellys actually not a bad shout then. Seems nailed so far and Palace keep CSs. I prefer Vardy over Wilson

I have the same forwards as yours and I would look at upgrading Barnes to Vardy/Wilson next week.

The problem is who do I downgrade for that. Annoyingly 0.2 short of Barnes to Wilson.. So I have to downgrade somebody.

How to solve a problem like Zinchenko?

            A. Otamendi (boring)
            B. Fredericks (nice fixtures and Rico plays NOR in 9 when Hammers are at Goodison)
            C. Tomori
            D. Someone a bit more exciting/punty ala Tierney

I guess that's the safest/sensible option. Funds not hugely needed really - still on 442 with front 6 of
                  Raz - Mo - KDB - Mount - Vardy - Pukki

                  Imagine I'll go 343 when I WC

It was the safest option this week and they conceded against a toothless everton and he got booked. Anyone is going to be able to score against this team, home or away

Agreed they are not as solid as before - but who is?

Plus WOL - cry - AVL - SOU (3 at home in next 4) is primed for shut outs.

Which front 7 would you prefer...

              Salah - KDB - Son - Mount - Cantwell
              Aguero - Abraham

              or

              Salah - KDB - Mount - McGinn/Yarmolenko - Cantwell
              Aguero - Aubameyang

Based on sensible guess, Aguero will start vs WOL. I am a non-owner but is looking to get him in.

Jesus may not have two rest, but I am quite confident Aguero will start vs Zagreb and WOL, and cry after int'l break when Aguero is expected of not representing Argentina. Aguero also has pretty good chance to start vs AVL and SOU as well if you fancy Jesus will start vs Atlanta and SOU at Carabao Cup.
