Community Tournament – The Pundits Playoff Draft Begins

Jeff: Good evening everyone, I am joined by guest pundits Roy Keane and Harry Redknapp to discuss the upcoming Pundits Playoff draft. Roy how do you feel about the new selection process?

RK: I’ll be honest with you, Jeff, I don’t like it. This isn’t the way we did things back in 1999 when United won the treble.

HR: I have to agree wiv’ Roy on this one, Jeff, all this biddin’ nonsense, I much prefer the pre-draft stuff, reminds me of ‘ow I used to operate through me car window.

Jeff: And we still don’t actually know when the player draft for the Pundits Playoff is…or do we Chris Kamara?

CK: Unbelievable Jeff, I’ve just heard from our tea ladies’, husband’s, best friend’s, daughter’s dog groomer, that the player values will be released this Wednesday night! I couldn’t be happier than a gooner on St Totteringham’s day! And I don’t even support West Ham…

Yes, ladies and gentleman, the time has finally arrived for the Pundits Playoff draft. At 9pm on Monday evening player registration for this awesome tournament will close (or has closed depending on when this article posts).

At the time of writing 229 players have registered to take part, 12 have volunteered to manage a team and 77 have been signed pre-draft. This leaves 91 spaces left to be filled on draft deadline day on Wednesday 9th October at 9pm. Here is a link to the current list of players and teams – List

Exactly one week before Deadline Day at 9pm this Wednesday, the bidding list will be revealed with the final list of players and their finalised draft values.

Draft process

The bidding list will be released in descending order with the highest value players first. Remember all player’s values are based on the cumulative scores so far. All twelve team managers will start with a budget, which will be £1250m minus all costs of their pre-draft signings and transfer fees so far. They will have a week to prepare their bids for the players they want, and all bids will be compiled automatically via google sheet wizardry at the same time, one hour before the draft takes place. At draft deadline the bids will be revealed one or two players at a time, along with their allocated team.

Rules

Team Managers can make as many bids as they like for as much as they like. The bids must be higher or equal to the player’s value otherwise they will be invalid.

The highest bid will prevail in signing that player, unless:

  • The team is already full.
  • There aren’t enough funds in the team’s pot to cover the bid AND the minimum cost(s) for all other remaining players they need.

In these cases the player will be signed by the next highest and valid bid.

Tie breakers to decide which team wins when there are two or more valid bids of equal value, are:

  1. Team with most players left to sign wins.
  2. If point 1 still leaves things tied, the team with most funds left in their budget wins.
  3. If still tied, the organisers will toss a coin.

Any teams that are not filled by the end of the draft will have players allocated to their team by the organisers, using as much of their available budget left as possible. All signings are final once the draft is complete, players will have to wait until the next transfer window to release themselves from their team, or for teams to release any players.

All players will be sent an email following the draft to confirm their place in their new team and to put them in contact with their team manager.

We will be releasing the link to the bidding list via a hot topic on Wednesday evening at 9pm(ish).

Team Avatar competition

We will also begin revealing the team names, mottos and avatars this Wednesday. The winning team avatar will be voted for via a public poll that will be opened on deadline day, Wednesday 9th October, and closed on the following Friday 11th October.

The tournament proper kicks off in GW9.

Team Manager position

Lastly it’s feared that one of our team managers has gone AWOL. Gwitbrock if you are still up for running a team please get in touch asap or a replacement will have to be made. Contact the organisers at punditsplayoff@gmail.com . If any latecomers fancy taking on a manager role, please get in contact as well.

In a crowded theatre in the West End, the judges took their seats behind the illuminated desk facing the stage.

On the far-left (where else would he be?) sat Klopptomist – the happy judge who liked everyone, and back for another competition despite having a bit of a mare with his selections last year. Next sat Jarvish, with his quiz show and cycling days now firmly behind him he was eager to check out the current crop of talent. Next in line was Gnu – the veteran judge from north of the border who loves a drag act. Lastly (but not leastly) sat Slouch – the mean judge who always had a cutting put-down for anyone that showed any sign of weakness or incompetence. He was going to have a field day today……

First to face the judges were a couple of half-naked fit young men. Jarvish perked up immediately. “What are you names please?” asked Klopptomist. “I’m Pras United” and “I’m AA33” they said in turn before yelling in unison “and we are the Booty Brothers!” With a confident point to the off-stage crew, Mr Boombastic by Shaggy started blaring from the speakers and the two younglings got their groove on. It was hypnotic and erotic. The crowd went ape. This was an easy 4 yeses. Even Slouch had nothing negative to say……

Next up was a man with a big unkempt beard wearing dungarees and holding a banjo – “Hi y’awl – mah name is Bug – you can cawll me DesertBug” he said in a thick southern-American accent. Everyone was expecting the theme from Deliverance to follow, but instead he sang the entire periodic table in record speed. “He did that in 29 seconds!” said Gnu in amazement looking at his stopwatch. “That’s what your missus said last night” quipped Slouch. Another yes-fest and the Bug was through.

On strolled some smartly dressed men next. “We are Baby B and Zan K and we are opera singers” they announced proudly. “Oh for fecks sake” mumbled Gnu under his breath, obviously still not fully recovered from his night of drinking random Thai beer the night before, and before they even had time to hit their first note, down came the confetti. GOLDEN BUZZER!!!!!! Gnu had activated it!!!! “I’m not listening to that crap” he stated – “you can just go straight through”

Just one spot in the finals remained today as on strolled a muscly guy with a neat beard dressed as something out of Game of Thrones with a sword in his hand. After introducing himself by the rather surprising name of Professor Bear, he went on to do a mesmerising routine with his massive sword being held firmly in his large sweaty hands – thrusting it everywhere to everyone’s delight. Klopptomist likes this. As did the other judges. 4 yeses.

And that was the end of the first round of auditions. The judges went back to their various dens of iniquity while the successful acts phoned home to tell their families the good news. The auditions will continue……….

That was a long and tough day, fortunately I have only the faintest recollection of what went on although I can't unhear Baby B & Zan K.
There's just not enough Singha in the world to make me do this again.

I can confirm that there are no weaknesses or chinks in this line up. Jarvish was mesmerising with all his big words , Klopptomist fresh from proof of his artistic genius , Gnu in his best frock and yours truly cracking into a vague smile.
      Beam me up Scotty.

I seem to be worth 75 million (player 159). Perhaps I'll drop with my 51 pts this week. Anyway my team should be in quite decent condition and I should have 2 ft:s for itb.

Looking forward to hear from my manager whether I should sell Hayden for Saka or Dendo or do something even more dull 😉

And sorry, just after writing this I noticed KdB issue. I was away during weekend, if that is excuse good enough (nowadays I usually watch most of the matches).

It shall be interesting to see if I am worth getting in. Would have been happy to contact Lawro, but the bargain part was an obstacle 🙁

Even though I cannot brag with experience, since this is my 2nd "serious" season, dark horses do win races sometimes.

Hi Managers, I'm the guy ranked #2. You may have seen I have no season history in this account, but I've had 6 seasons under my belt already, just decided to use my main account this year to focus on a money mini-league. I'm an avid fpl player, follows the ffs page and the Scoutcast closely and have a good idea of how to continue my good start to this season (at least that's what I think :D). Really hope to be picked up in a team (will be all for joining groups and communicating) and enjoy this new fpl experience.

I could have written almost the same words to start with as Wolverine. I have been working as sports betting analyst previously over ten years before my current career. I playd games like La Quiniela in Spain, Sweden and Finland.

My first fpl season was half a season, the next one I started as casual, but after having found this site and starting to watch matches started to improve my OR. Last season was first "serious" one, but I did some rookie errors and fell to some famous traps.

This season I started without Sterling ("calculated" risk lost) and instead of Digne and Lundstram tried to be sneaky with Zouma and Coleman. After two weeks I thought that Rashford and Martial are real deal. Considering those decisions things could be much worse.

I am planning to publish fpl and betting related content this autumn. MS Excel and football stats are art imo 🙂

So I am ready to try to help my team on pitch and dressing room if I am signed.

Pundits Playoff draft commences tonight at 9pm!

At 9pm the bids will start appearing on the Bidding List tab on the Tournament Googlesheet - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yNMOQz9cNX9xFoBUfB0gKRlUyVsYukoru-yLEArXjGE/edit?usp=sharing

There are still team managers looking to fill their spots (scroll up), so express your interest quickly, if you haven't done so already. Rules of the draft are on this article.

Only 180 spots available and 239 have applied to take part so some will experience disappointment, but for those that miss out there is the next transfer window. Good luck!!!

OK we are going to get started in 5 minutes.
Bids will be revealed two players at a time every minute. They will be allocated into their new team straight away. the whole draft will take just over an hour (don't worry I've been to the loo, got me tea and biscuits all lined up).

I'll post results on here by 'tier' every 5 minutes or so, so the £100m players first, etc.

For any players who don't get picked up by any team, fear not! You may be allocated into a team at the end of the draft if some teams haven't drafted enough players.

I look forward to being part of the team. A couple of years ago I was in Grabbangladesh so hopefully Jonathan put a good word in for me. I wasn't too hot on modern media but I have an iPad now so I should figure out how to get on to Instagram.
