Salah and de Bruyne sold by chunk of top 10k managers this week

A chunk of high ranking Fantasy Premier League managers opted to sell Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) and Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) for Gameweek 8.

The Manchester City midfielder was ruled out of the meeting with Wolves this weekend after suffering a groin injury against Everton.

Manager Pep Guardiola described the issue as “not serious” this week and seemed optimistic that de Bruyne would be back after the upcoming international break.

However, that relatively positive update on the player was not enough for a sizeable portion of managers currently ranked inside the top 10,000 places worldwide.

Going into Gameweek 7, de Bruyne was sat in 85.8% of teams at this level, more than any other Fantasy asset.

However, his ownership in the top 10k dropped to just 59.9% for the Gameweek 8 deadline.

That represents an ownership drop of 25% at this level of the game.

Some of that might be influenced by a change of personnel inside the top 10k, but considering de Bruyne scored nine points against Everton, it seems unlikely that many teams without him earned green arrows into the upper echelons.

Considering the Belgian international was sold by 795,000+ managers worldwide for Gameweek 8, it seems likely that his drop in top 10k popularity was heavily influenced by these sales.

The Fantasy community will almost certainly be holding its collective breath over the international break as we await further information on de Bruyne’s recovery – so it will be interesting to see how much ground can be gained by this chunk of managers as they go without him for at least Gameweek 8.

All eyes will be on de Bruyne’s fitness situation after the international break

Another premium option moved on by this season’s highest-ranking Fantasy managers was Liverpool man Salah.

He was sat in just 54% of top 10k teams at the Gameweek 8 deadline, a drop of 16% from the 66.1% recorded ahead of Gameweek 7.

Those sold the Egyptian for Gameweek 8 breathed a sigh of relief on Saturday afternoon as Liverpool were largely restricted by Leicester City.

The Reds did win the match courtesy of a James Milner (£5.3m) penalty but it was scored after Salah had come off with a knock.

Whether he would have taken it had he still been on the pitch is hard to say given that Milner has historically taken spot-kicks even when sharing the field with Salah.

The injury did not look too serious at the time and he will have an international break without any match duties to recover.

However, Jurgen Klopp did seem angry about the challenge on him from Hamza Choudhury (£4.5m) and did not paint a positive picture.

“How can he be okay? He was limping from the pitch and you ask me if he’s okay! How can he be okay?! Did you watch it back? Watch me, what do you think?” – Jurgen Klopp

With De Bruyne and Salah both losing support among the top 10k, it is interesting to see which premium options increased in popularity for Gameweek 8.

It appears one of the most common recipients of those players’ funds was Raheem Sterling (£12.1m).

The England international’s popularity within the top 10k rose from 30.6% to 38.2% for Gameweek 8.

However, Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) also saw a dip in popularity for this weekend, dropping from 52% ownership in the top 10k for Gameweek 7 to just 40.5% for Gameweek 8.

To see where some of these funds have been moved to, a look at the Gameweek 8 Wildcard template among the top 10k gives us some clues.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.0m) recent form has convinced 49.8% of managers at this level who Wildcarded this week to include him in their squad ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Also included among the most popular Wildcard targets was Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) selected by 36.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 8.

The absence of de Bruyne from this selection shows that the Algerian has been pounced upon as a short-term opportunity while the Belgian is out.

Despite Aubameyang’s popularity on those Wildcards, and being signed by 210,000+ managers worldwide, for Gameweek 8, the top 10k were not particularly interested in him for the captaincy this week.

It was a close-run thing for the most popular captain in the upper echelons of the world rankings, Aguero and Sterling both backed by a similar amount.

It was the Argentinian who topped the charts for top 10k captains, 23.5% of them handing him the armband for that meeting with Wolves.

Meanwhile, 22.5% placed the armband on Sterling and 13.9% went for Salah.

Aubameyang did not appear in the top three and made up the 40.1% chunk representing ‘Other’ captains.

Aubameyang was captained by just 13% of managers in the top 10k in Gameweek 8, while 6.8% went for Teemu Pukki (£7.2m) and 4.5% backed Harry Kane (£11.0m).

Finally, another look at general chip usage among the top 10k shows that they are becoming more and more a reliable test of high performance.

40% of the managers at this level are yet to use a chip this season, while 37.1% of them have played just one.

According to the breakdown, it is the Wildcard that remains the most popular, used by 39.5% so far.

    Any arguments for keeping
    A) Digne (likely getting Soyuncu)
    B) Pukki (likely getting Vardy)
    C) Salah over Mane?

Thinking about the same, and I haven't found a case for keeping any of them. Likely to play the WC after tomorrow's games, and I can't see myself keeping any of them.

I’m tempted to just activate just now and get it over with, given they’ve all played already anyway - any injuries or anything tmr would only cement my decision to WC...

Yeah, good point. Don't really know what I'm waiting for really – maybe an excuse for not wildcarding.

The thing is - I don't think my team looks horrible at the moment, but it's sure not bringing in the points…

On the other hand, at some point you just got to play the wildcard. Having it available going into an international break is an advantage (on paper). Good time to shake things up a bit.

no it wasnt a dive, just naivety from the guy who was hacking at Mane from behind. Im sure Mane knew full well he could get a penalty in such a position and maybe he held the ball long enough to do so, but he didnt dive particularly. It is a foul from their own stupidity really

No chance in hell. The trouble with VAR is it doesn't overrule referees so if there is bias in the ref's decision, there will be bias in the VAR decision.

Might have been contact, but Mane still made a meal out of it and did dive to con the ref - that was never a natural way to fall after the contact he received.

No, not when Salah didn't get done any of those times last season. Retrospective action only seems to be taken when it's literally an air tackle, i.e no contact at all. Anything where there's contact will always be impossible to prove as a dive.

VAR only intervenes in the course of a match when the officials have made a 'clear and obvious error' in one of four key areas - and going by this year the bar is impossible to clear.

As a fellow bad starter and someone who has finished in the top 10k a few times, are we forgetting how many popular FPL is now compared to previous years?

A 1.5m - 2m rank at this stage and everyone is saying their season is atrocious, when in actual fact you’re still in the top 25% of players and approximately 50 points away from the top 100k.

Would be interesting to know how many players played the game the last few years and how FPL has really grown.

        Heheh. Unfortunately no.

Just something I was surprised at, as was planning Salah to Mane on a WC

Salah has always bossed Mane on stats due to his selfishness but he is not so clinical.

Also believe Mane finished on same goals as Salah yesterday, and ever since Burnley, I think Mane will match/outperform.

Another interesting eye test I’ve noticed recently is I believe Firmino and Mane get on a lot better than Salah, and Firmino looks to have set up Mane a lot more than Salah in 50/50 positions.

Mane is so more dangerous and clinical. Saw it in the flesh, Mane on the ball was so different, Salah got in good positions but poor touch and composure.

Have you seen Salah dribble, it’s all quick feet and many touches, hence higher pen touches.

Shots and xG mean he gets into position more often however Mané is more clinical so it evens out just about.

Lasted 8 GW with a 4-4-2/5-3-2. It's time to go back to the trusty 3-4-3 for me. Digne down in defence will allow a move to Josh King next GW.

    For a -4, I can do:

    Digne > Reid (3.9)
    Pukki > Vardy

I can only do this before Vardy rises to 9.0. Also, I know Reid will never play, it doesn't matter. At the moment, I have TAA, Boly, Soyuncu, Lundstram and Digne for my 3 defensive positions. I think Boly and Soy have good enough runs of fixtures to start them almost every game for a while. It reduces my flexibility slightly, and means if I ever have 3 players out I won't field a full XI (though this doesn't happen often at all, in my experience).

So, basically, is Pukki > Vardy worth -4? (I already have Maddison too)

Need to downgrade Cantwell to 4.5 before he drops. Which is best? Thanks

    A. Cantwell to Saka
    B. Cantwell to Dendonker
    C. A or B and Dunk to Tomori

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Lundstram Dunk (Kelly Rico)
    Sterling Son Mount McGinn (Cantwell)
    Aguero Aubameyang Abraham

    Think I am going
    Pukki and Cantwell
To Wilson and Douglas Luis for a hit now exact cash.
Bench can survive 1 maybe 2 IB injuries.
    SV means more than tv.
Having a good week so far so feels like I can afford the hit right now.

Hey guys, appreciate your advice on my team below! Having a bit of a terrible season around 2mil OR.

    Lloris* Button
    Tomori, Soy, Rico, Lunds, Digne
    Sterling, Mount, Salah*, KDB*, Cantwell
    CWilson, Pukki, Tammy
    1FT, 102.4, 0.1ITB

    Lloris, Salah, Pukki >>>>
    A) Pope, Mahrez, Auba (0.9 ITB) -8
    B) Pope, Mahrez, Vardy (3.0 ITB) -8

What are your thoughts on either of these options? Should I take the hits now or wait / transfer them over the next couple of gameweeks?
My plan is to bring in TAA for Digne around GW13, so option 3 will give me more flexibility. I can bench Digne next GW so don't need to transfer him out yet.

    Cheers guys

the way they played vs Brighton it is either him or Foyth. With my abysmal start of the season he will start Foyth and get a cs. I´m starting and having Boly as a very good replacement if he´s not
