Mané outscores Salah as Liverpool duo continue FPL battle

Liverpool 2-1 Leicester City

Goals: Sadio Mané (£11.6m) James Milner (£5.3m) | James Maddison (£7.1m)

Assists: Mané, Milner | Ayoze Perez (£6.0m)

Bonus Points: Milner x3, Mané x2, Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) x 1

Liverpool grabbed a dramatic injury-time winner against Leicester City to maintain their 100% winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

Sadio Mané (£11.6m) opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side with a well-taken goal to continue the debate over whether he or Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the best Anfield-based attacker to own.

Frustratingly for the Egyptian’s backers, he was substituted just minutes before Liverpool were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

It was Mané who was fouled and James Milner (£5.3m) who dispatched the resulting spot-kick. However, whether Salah’s absence made much of a difference is hard to tell, given that the former England international has often taken penalties ahead of him when he has been on the pitch.

Mané opened the scoring for Liverpool on Saturday afternoon

Mané’s first-half strike combined with his assist for the late penalty means the £11.6m forward registered a 12-point score, against the backdrop of Salah’s first blank at home this season.

For the near 41% of owners of the highly-priced Egyptian, he now has just one goal in his last five Premier League outings and the attractive form of Mané may prove to be enough for some managers to make the switch and save £0.9m of their budget.

Some might even want to go further still and look elsewhere for premium options as Liverpool face Manchester United (away), Spurs (home) and Manchester City (home) in the next four Gameweeks. Some top 10,000 managers have been shipping out their Liverpool attackers this week, for example.

Salah was forced off with an injury against Leicester

While owners of Salah debate his long-term place in their squads, a potential injury to the forward after he was taken off late in the game will have to be closely monitored over the international break.

When asked about it post-match Klopp fumed in response to Hamza Choudhury‘s (£4.5m) the tackle that forced his player to leave the field of play limping.

“How can he be okay? He was limping from the pitch and you ask me if he’s okay! How can he be okay?! Did you watch it back? Watch me, what do you think?” – Jurgen Klopp

Klopp also singled out Choudhury, whose tackle on Matt Ritchie (£5.4m) had drawn criticism last week.

“He should know better. He maybe was unlucky with [Matt] Ritchie [who is out for two months after a tackle from Choudhury], but it was him and he has to calm down. ‘You cannot only go for the man, and then he gets only a yellow card – I don’t know how that works. You see Mo lying in the dressing room and you think, okay…”

While Leicester were unquestionably good value for their goal, yet another failure to keep a clean sheet for Liverpool is likely to raise further questions regarding the viability of their defensive assets as duos or even trios.

Alexander-Arnold was the only Liverpool defender to get any additional points against Leicester

Neither Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) or Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) were able to register attacking returns that have so often made up for the loss of their clean sheets points in the 2019/20 campaign, although the former did manage to cling onto one bonus.

The absence of Joel Matip (£5.5m) through injury, who has enjoyed an impressive season so far, did not help the Reds. Joe Gomez (£5.2m) was poor against Salzburg midweek so Dejan Lovren (£5.3m) earned a surprise recall to the side and arguably had a better game than Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) was caught out for Leicester’s equalising goal.

The return of Alisson (£5.8m) after the international break, of course, could be significant.

On his return to Anfield, former manager Brendan Rodgers can be proud of his side’s performance despite defeat, with James Maddison’s (£7.1m) goal in the 80th minute giving hope to an upset on Merseyside.

Maddison was the latest player to bust the Liverpool clean sheet – the Reds still have none at home this season

The Foxes’ performance against Liverpool marked a continuation of their excellent recent form that had seen them register just one defeat so far in the 2019/20 campaign.

For owners of Maddison, whose strike ten minutes from time looked to have sealed a point for Rodgers’ men, a goal from the £7.1m man was welcome news.

For those who had backed Jamie Vardy (£8.9m) to repeat his goalscoring heroics from last weekend against Newcastle, however, a blank against a side who the 31-year-old has typically excelled against in the past will have been disappointing given his recent form.

Interest has also been high in Leicester’s defensive assets such as Çaglar Söyüncü (£4.6m) though a clean sheet would not have been expected upon travelling to the champions of Europe and those managers in ownership of Leicester’s backline are likely to be satisfied at the performance of the increasingly popular Söyüncü (owned by 6.6%) as well as Jonny Evans (£5.0m).

The Foxes’ assets look set to be popular over the coming months as they sit top of our Season Ticker in the next nine Gameweeks.

Leicester succeeded in keeping this match a tight one – good news for those invested in their defensive assets

While this was a game that will provide fuel to the debate regarding Liverpool’s defensive assets as well as the Mané vs Salah dilemma, managers would be unwise to discount Leicester’s battling performance, and arguably against nearly any other side in the division their showing on Saturday would have constituted at least a point.

Vardy and Maddison will continue to prove attractive as attacking assets at competitive prices, yet with another double-digit score in a crucial game, Mané continues to reward those in ownership of the £11.6m forward with another sensational performance and a match-defining contribution.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian; Robertson, van Dijk, Lovren, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum (Henderson 78’) Milner, Fabinho; Mané, Firmino, (Origi 78’) Salah, (Lallana 90+2’).

Leicester XI (4-1-4-1): Schmeichel; Chilwell, Söyüncü, Evans, R Pereira; Ndidi; Maddison (Choudhury 86’) Tielemans, Praet (Perez 73’), H Barnes (Albrighton 45’); Vardy.

Those who bandwagoned him in after the hat trick are lucky it didnt end sooner. Hes a striker for a team that will be battling relegation, was never going to get more than 1 goal in 3 at most over the season, and it will involve many streaks of 3-4 games without returns.

Im keeping Salah, pens and occasional corners sway it for me.
With the abundance of relatively cheap mids & forwards this year I dont really feel the pressure to save 0.9m

There is not much between them, gone game weeks are now history.
Salah may as well outscore Mane over next 3 or 4 games.

Moving out Salah for Mane at this point is a waste of precious transfer and a risk not worth taking.

Loved the way he got so upset with Salah that time but just brushed it off and improved his own game...top top player! And as Ogie said to me on here earlier we spent a huge amount on Pogba but imagine if we just went in and got Mane before that...chalk and cheese!

When will someone save United from from the Glazers?

Looking back at it all it is strange but true that a horse namely Rock of Gibraltar was what United perished on.When Fergie fell out with Magnier and McManus over the exceptional stallion it was a watershed moment in United's history.

Magnier and McManus must have been pretty pissed off with Fergie and United over the Rock and probably decided the throw the whole thing to the wolves or the Glazer's as it so happened.

The Glazer's borrowed heavily to buy the club using junk bonds and even though United did well for a few years after the takeover a price had to ultimately be paid, so here we are a mere shell of our illustrious past.

People like the Glazer's are a necessary evil in the market and are important to an ecosystem like any alpha predator is but to see something you love dearly being striped out is heart wrenching. All i am waiting for now is for the naming rights of Old Trafford to be sold off and the last vestiges of United's soul scatted to the wind.

Pity Fergie did not listen to Keano and back down to Magnier and McManus for the clubs sake, things may have been a lot different.

hm i would argue Liverpool last three years have done nothing but good transfers? City as well, though Rodri still is up in the air, i´m not convinced.
United lacks not only players that are good enough but a structure within the organization that are equipped to todays football world. That needs to be adressed, and from there you can build a team on the pitch with a manager you give time.
Buying a half decent centerback for world record fee does not solve problems-) But there is hope, because i think if you can manage to shape the club from within with new structure i think that team could be within some years of productive investment in players and manager competetive. Build around that cb pair, get quality in midfield alongside Mctominay, and one or two attackers alongside talented and more grown players in Rashford/Martial/James. I don´t count Pogba in because i really can´t se what he offers beside playing well when Kanté runs his socks off for him or playing Cardiff and Huddersfield

Lack of financial support doesn't seem to be an issue. Terrible transfers, bad manager choices and poor player attitude seem far bigger issues than the Glazers to me.

Whatever time frame you use (5 years, 10 years) United are comfortably, by some margin, the 2nd biggest spenders behind City. Not to mention the fact that they were recently paying a guy half a million pounds a week to play for them. To suggest they haven't been able to compete financially is laughable.

But the spending was not for footballing reason at times but for commercial reasons and to pretty much sell kits.

That is the business model that the Glazer's have brought to the club and in fairness it is very profitable but at the same time is bad for the football.

No,i think those lads were brought in to stop the rot and start moving in the right direction again.

Di Maria,Pogba.Sanchez even Zlatan were all signed with one eye on the commercial windfall that they may bring though.

Has very little to do with the Glazers and more to do with incompetent leadership at the board, sports director and manager level, no long term planning or cohesion between the manager and those in charge of the money.

Ole is absolutely out of his depth. If United had a good manager who received full backing from the board they would be up there with Liverpool and City for sure. Klopp or Pep with the same kind of backing they get at their respective clubs would have done just as well at United, even with the Glazers there.

They love Woodward,he is their boy and has done very well selling United in the likes of Asia keeping the club in profit which is all they care about.

The will not dump him in a fit,the club needs to to be brought out and a fresh start made.

Yeah not to sure myself but I want to get King in and perhaps upgrade Pukki afterwards.

Therefore it would be between Wilson or Vardy as Pukki's upgrade and Wilson seems better option.

This is a strong team. I would perhaps consider trying to upgrade one of Pukki or Barnes, however, suspect you need to free up funds so IB is the time to play WC if you are going to go for it. Mane outscoring Salah at the moment and we are not sure whether he has an injury or not so there is circa 1m to be gained.

I would when i see the wc team you're going for. If you don't you'll lose value with Salah, Pukki, Barnes. I'd move on Son as well. As i said i like your wc team, Alzate interesting for a 4.5. He played well yesterday i heard. Saka hopefully plays today to have another option.

He will need his best players when 3 of his most important players are out. City will struggle when they don´t have laporte (who is a master in key passes through midfield area to open up and initiate problems for opponents), KDB with his exceptional inside curls wil be missed and now Sané with all his trickery to open up tight defenses, take away those three and it changes the dynamic of how the play. Remember that while KDB was out for most of last season, Sané and Laporte played most games. City will surely win but i would be surprised if by more than 2-0

The outcry when a foreign player wins a penalty in comparison to when an English player does is very annoying. You have the likes of Shearer, Linekar, Murphy, A Gray, A Clarke and many more berating Mane. It's happened before with the likes of Pogba, Aubameyang and Son.

It's fine when the likes of Kane, Milner and Barkley win soft pens though.

Similar treatment when players want to 'steal pens'. Not much was are over Barkley stealing one, as opposed to the Pogba vs Rashford situation.

Agreed. I'd expect most attackers to do the same in the last minute of a game when it's 1-1; just find the perception of going down easily vs being smart when using body rather selective.

The point about Barkley is especially glaring. Another reason they dont make anything off it is because the manager Lampard is English. If this happened with Sarri or Conte the usual suspects like Neville would be going on and on about poor leadership and lack of control over the dressing room.

Spot on. The worst is when they go full brexit and blame the foreign players for introducing it to all the innocent English lads who copy them

Racism (unconscious bias) is everywhere in white society. That's not an attack on any specific pundits, but can't expect old timers like Shearer and Murphy to be as 'woke' as today's youth

                    Hi all, 1.4M itb 2FT

                    Pope
                    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram Digne Kelly
                    Salah KDB Sterling Cantwell Mount
                    Pukki Tammy Greenwood

                    1.Digne to:
                    A.Tomori
                    B.Dunk

                    Then

                    2. Forwards
                    A. Pukki to Firmino/Vardy/Wilson
                    B. Greenwood to Wesley/King/Barnes

Alternatively for a -4, I could do Digne to Rico, Salah to Mane and Pukki to Aubameyang.

                    What do you guys think?

                        A. Looks good too, specially for current form but think it is worth keeping Salah for the long run...

Pathetic. No way that farce with the six again call didn't change the game.

100%. Scored off the back of it. Also why does a trainer need to be on the field after 5 minutes to interfere with the charge down? Raiders were robbed.

The idiot ref put the scrum down (with a Roosters feed!) because the trainer getting hit with the ball "interfered with play" - yeah, interfered with the Raiders getting a run away try! They had come up with the ball, should have been play on.

That was a terrible way for the game to turn. Raiders were definitely hard done by there!!

Reality check. My outside the box suggestions that will score Buendia and Mina didn't score yesterday, however they are close.

Only left is Rashford from today.

Let's see how my recommendations will materialize..

                      They were 2-4 GW's picks.
