City’s defence struggles as attacking assets blank against superb Wolves

Manchester City 0-2 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Adama Traore (£5.0m) x2
  • Assists: Raul Jimenez (£7.1m) x2
  • Bonus: Traore x3, Jimenez x2, Willy Boly (£5.0m) x1

It was a grim day for owners of Manchester City assets as Pep Guardiola’s troops blanked across the board at the Etihad.

There is never an opportune time for City’s players to misfire but Sunday seemed particularly inconvenient, with Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) both captained by over 1.1 million Fantasy Premier League managers and Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m) the most-bought player of Gameweek 8 by some distance.

A sizeable chunk of the 440,000+ FPL bosses who drafted in the Algerian ahead of this fixture would have been making the short-term, downward move from the injured Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and hoping for an immediate points haul to gain an edge on those holding onto the Belgian, but the Fantasy Gods were particularly cruel.

Mahrez not only blanked but failed to even reach the hour-mark, with his 59th-minute substitution depriving his owners of an additional two points with the game still goalless.

Completing the game didn’t do Sterling or Aguero any good, however, with neither premium asset looking likely to score.

Sterling was pushed too wide and often nullified by the disciplined Adama Traore (£5.0m), while Aguero was well-shackled by Wolves’ imperious back three and a stoppage-time effort that sailed wide was about as close as he came to avoiding his first blank of 2019/20.

A simplistic conclusion would be that De Bruyne’s presence was greatly missed, although let’s not forget that the Citizens did win the league in 2018/19 largely without their influential Belgian.

The stats do bear out that theory this season, though: City’s two league defeats have come in the only matches that De Bruyne hasn’t started.

Ilkay Gundogan (£5.2m) deputised for the Belgium international on the right-hand side of central midfield in both of those games and created only three chances across the two fixtures combined; to put that in some context, De Bruyne supplied eight key passes in the 8-0 win over Watford a fortnight ago.

It wasn’t just the German’s fault, though, with David Silva (£7.6m) similarly neat and tidy but sometimes too ponderous with the ball and lacking the dynamism that De Bruyne brings.

It’s important not to get too carried away by this 2-0 reverse.

This was City’s first defeat at home of the calendar year and the first time they had failed to score in the league at the Etihad since May 2018, when they had already sealed their first Premier League crown under Guardiola.

The Sky Blues had racked up 14 goals in their previous three home league games this season and are head and shoulders above all other Premier League teams in as many attacking metrics as you’d care to name, be it big chances, shots in the box or efforts on target.

We can perhaps forgive the Citizens’ attacking options an off-day, then, particularly with a rested De Bruyne set to return after the international break and an appealing double-header to come at Eastlands after the Gameweek 9 trip to Selhurst Park.

The City defence is a different kettle of fish, however.

This latest self-destruction at the back wasn’t an anomalous bad performance but the latest in a string of ropey displays without the injured Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m), who is missing until 2020.

Last week we made the point that City will still get clean sheets this season even without Laporte, as their ball-hogging style and aggressive pressing will be enough to keep out lesser teams regardless of personnel at centre-half.

Top-flight teams are fast learning that Nicolas Otamendi (£5.6m) and Fernandinho (£5.2m) are no Cannavaro and Nesta, however, and particularly vulnerable to swift counter-attacks.

Wolves should have been ahead long before Raul Jimenez (£7.1m) made a fool of Otamendi and teed up Traore for their opener on 79 minutes, with the Mexican himself and strike partner Patrick Cutrone (£5.7m) wasting three one-on-ones in the opening half an hour.

Cutrone skewed wide after just five minutes before Fernandinho made a crucial double block from Wolves’ two strikers in the same move, with Jimenez later losing his balance when bearing down on Ederson‘s (£6.1m) goal.

Those who own Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.4m), omitted from the starting XI for the second time in three Gameweeks, will be wondering whether a sideways move to Otamendi is even worth the bother, although John Stones (£5.3m) does at least return after the international break to give Guardiola another option at centre-half.

Perhaps the biggest indictment of City’s defence is that they have already conceded 47.2% of the big chances that they allowed in the whole of 2018/19.

Guardiola, unsurprisingly, leapt to the defence of his two under-fire centre-backs, saying:

They were quite good. They suffered because we lost possession in front of them. No central defenders can sustain this kind of balls we lose in the first moments. They were good.

We have waffled on enough about the deficiencies of Guardiola’s side, though.

A big reason why they flattered to deceive on Sunday was the performance of Wolves, who evoked memories of last season with a superb display at both ends of the pitch.

This first away win of 2019/20 for Nuno Espirito Santo’s troops brought to mind the 1-1 draw with Arsenal 11 months ago, with the visitors imperious at the back and looking like scoring every time they countered.

We wrote two weeks ago that Wolves had shown promising signs in the last-gasp draw with Crystal Palace and the encouragement has continued over the last fortnight, culminating in this superb result in Manchester.

Even an early injury to Romain Saiss (£4.4m) and the benchings of Matt Doherty (£6.0m) and Jonny (£5.4m), all of whom have played important roles in the league and in Europe over the last two weeks, failed to disrupt their flow.

Willy Boly (£5.0m) was his usual immense self but credit should also go to Ryan Bennett (£4.9m) and Conor Coady (£5.0m) alongside him, with Guardiola’s side creating very little of note – a Silva free-kick that cracked the bar about as close as the hosts came to scoring, while the two City opportunities that Opta deemed ‘big chances’ (a Silva volley from a tight angle and a blocked Bernardo shot) were hardly gilt-edged.

Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m) and Adama, so suspect at Goodison Park a month ago, produced perhaps their best defensive performances at wing-back, leaving Mahrez and Sterling visibly frustrated figures.

Traore was later moved alongside Jimenez when Doherty was introduced and the tactical reshuffle proved a masterstroke, with the Mexico international twice setting the budget FPL midfielder free on goal to finish past Ederson.

Speaking after full-time, Santo said:

We played good, we played good. The performance was good and defensively we were very good, very organised, we knew exactly the points of pressure, and the boys worked hard today.

At the end, running, most of them were at their limits, but until the end it was fantastic. The fans enjoyed it, and it was good; it was very good.

Wolves now sit second-top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 9-17 and their upturn in form is coinciding nicely with the fixture swing after the international break.

The problem remains Europa League-led rotation, however, with Doherty and Jonny’s benchings further evidence of that.

Only Coady and Jimenez are ever-presents among Wolves’ outfielders, with those two players and Boly – who missed Gameweek 5 through suspension – about as secure Fantasy options as the Wolves boss can offer.

This time last year, Santo hadn’t made a single change to his starting XI in the league.

Traore is at least playing more of a part and has started the last five league games, with his versatility meaning he can play at wing-back, on the right of a front three or indeed up top in a two-man attack.

Speaking first of Traore’s finishing, Santo said

It’s something that is improving, he’s improving. Everybody remembers Adama, he is special because he’s very fast. He’s unique and we have to take advantage of that.

Putting in Matt [Doherty] to try to stabilise the defence and search for a moment of attacking talent.

Diogo Jota (£6.1m) missed out for the visitors with a toe injury, while City’s Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) was sidelined with a hamstring problem that isn’t expected to keep him out of Gameweek 9.

Speaking of Kyle Walker‘s (£6.0m) half-time withdrawal, meanwhile, Guardiola said:

I made a change because Kyle Walker could not continue. In the first half, all the dangerous situations we created were from Joao [Cancelo].

Kyle had an infection in his stomach in the last weeks. He didn’t train and lost weight. He made an incredible effort today because we needed fast players.

At half-time he said he didn’t feel good, that’s why we made a substitution.

It’s Vardy or Wilson decision for me this week.
Would like them both but only room for one.

      It looks fine.

If you are happy playing safe then it's good. If you want to take some risks then losing Ota and maybe changing the shape/ formation of your team could also work.

I think Wilson will match Vardy . Pereira would then be a good option.

I got a top 10k finish last year, but this season I feel bizarelly lost around the million mark. I actually quite like my team, not feeling any pressing transfer needs from week to week, but the points just won't come. It's like my gut feeling has gone. Even my 8 year old son is above me!

I'v saved 2 FT and 1,6 ITB going into the international break. What would you do with this lot?

Points are quite tight this year and a few good weeks will see you shoot up the rankings.
I think that your main issues are Mings , 4th mid , Pukki and Barnes .
But to change things you need to sacrifice a big hitter.
I would also be looking to play 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 each week.
I would try to get a front 3 including Wilson & Abraham .

I think it's an odd move considering Mark's incredible history. Maybe he will be proved right but Martial hasn't played since week 3. He's returned in all three of the games he started but United are a shambles at the moment and aren't free scoring. surely any of Yarmolenko, Maddison, Dilva & McGinn would have been better for that period of time?

    Morning all

So I decided last night to take the plunge with a -8 which gives me this team:

    0itb
    Heaton*
    VVD*, Soy, Rico/ Lunds
    Mané, Sterling, KDB, Mount
    Vardy, Wilson, Abraham
    (Button) (Lunds/ Rico, Cantwell, Kelly)

Plan is either to play WC later before deadline if needed or to stick with this and save WC.

My only remaining “concerns” are Heaton and VVD (i.e not having TAA) but no cash itb so beyond dropping Sterling on a WC I don’t see a solution for now.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks

That squad is fine for now. TAA is hardly setting the world on fire compared to VVD at the mo so that move is not urgent. Heaton is also fine for now for a 4.5 keeper, PPG outscoring the likes of Foster, Kepa and Adrian.

        Cheers mate!

So as it stands you’d stick with the -8 rather than playing WC as nothing major left to fix and would only be playing it to save 8pts which may not be reason enough?

    Heaton
    Soyuncu Tomori Digne*
    Mount Son KdB Salah
    C.Wilson Pukki* Ayew*
    Pope VvD* Diop Stephens

    2 FT, 2.2 ITB

Ayew -> Vardy, funded by VvD -> Lascelles

    Any downside to this move?

Doesn't feel right getting him out with 40% ownership.
Or maybe I could just do Pukki -> Vardy.

          • 6 Years

Those 40% will mostly not be paying much attention to how much the Pukki party has died out. I wouldn’t put much importance on that. Yes he could still have the occasional haul but there will be more consistently delivering players.

I’d prefer the Pukki > Vardy move to keep Ayew as the decent 3rd bench striker

With so much invested in Defense, do I really need a bench striker?

Possibly not but just would rather be losing Pukki than Ayew atm.

Jiménez does look a tasty pick but I’d be worried still re EL commitments taking their toll.

    Bench Rico or Lundstram?

    Rico
+ Norwich have only scored once away this season
    - Bournemouth don't keep many clean sheets

    Lundstram
    + Oop
    - Arsenal have more attacking threat than Norwich

How did your GW8 go? Were any of your players benched? Did you get any injuries? How did your bench perform?

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 8 here:

No benchees this time round, but a crappy 28 points with another captain fail drops me down to 1.3m OR.

However, decision to go punty with Barnes KDB to Auba Yarmolenko (-4) left me I believe 14 points worse off than had I just done the alternative of BArnes to Abraham and Lundstram in for Big Kev 🙁 🙁

Wildcard active now though, hopefully fixing a few things!

28, very rough. Very tough moves as well 🙁

I wish I had a WC now, you've got some hope and something to do for the next two weeks!

My score is saved my Mane over Salah, giving me 52. I've halved my rank twice in 3 weeks.. but still only at 600k. That shows where I was at before 😉

Smooth - Pope, Alonso, Lundstram, Abraham - a mediocre 41 points and yet strangely a green arrow up to OR 140k

Rough - Sterling (C), TAA, Mo, DSilva, Cantwell, Pukki

Net - I've been becalmed for the last 4 gameweeks, wildcard now active. The Pukki party is officially over!

For the second week in a row an incredibly dull gameweek that will be of little significance come the end of the season and may as well not have happened.

      Smooth - Tammy and Mount.

Rough - Feel cheated that Villa got 5 goals with no involvement from McGinn! Norwich's race is run, should have realised the Pukki party was over sooner.

rough - brought in mahrez for kdb and instantly captained him just for pep to sub him in the 59th minute
lewis dunk last sub on my bench

In a week of captain devastation 48 and a green arrow has to be taken as a smooth.

Smooth: Mane shining light and Alonso punt going well

Rough: Auba's fail at home to Bournmouth. But in a week that all other options also failed it wasn't too bad.

Did anyone successfully captain a decent points scorer?

    11. GOAT614

Smooth would definitely be captaining Abraham over Aguero. Rough probably losing Pieters clean sheet points by a few minutes.

Wasted my FT on kdb to Mahrez instead of banking 2 for the IB. If I had 2 transfers would of been enough to avoid the wildcard but with 1FT decided to pull the trigger

    13. Al_Coa
      • 4 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

Actually it went quite good / 68 point - 4, 64 points in total / and the funny thing is that I would have even more if I haven't made any of the transfers, but that's another story...

My hope was that Southampton will concede a lot of goals and that, if that happens, Abraham and Mount will score, so I had them both in, Abraham (c) even if I had Sterling, Auba and Kane in my team. I was thinking that Leicester is not that bad and that they might concede 2 goals max (same goes for Wolves, especially since City played without KdB and with unsettled B.Silva). My only concern was Auba, but hey, he had to blank somewhere, so there I am now, almost in the top 50k for the first time this season.

A gameweek like this when almost no one of the high owned players returns something and when you are moderately ok with your captain can really jet speed you up at the top... Anyway, best of luck to all in the next gwks 😉

Green arrows so I am happy.

Smooth: starting Dunk to cover injured KDB

Rough: KDB out for a pre-wildcard gamble...got Mahrez, didn’t I. Lundstram sitting pretty first bench - I even put him there instead of behind my midfielder (Dendoncker) because I thought there’s no way Wolves are getting anything from City, so might as well have the Sheffield clean sheet primed and ready for Pep roulette coverage.

Smooth: My GW7 pair of FTs for Zinchenko & Greenwood out for Söyüncü & Abraham has really paid off by now.

    18. Arteta

Rough: I sold Wesley who outscored trio Aubameyang, Vardy, Tammy together. Ota, Raz, Riyad - what was what?! Too many unexpected blanks and watching how my captain Pierre hit the post in the last minutes sums it up.

Smooth: Third green arrow in a row and moving up to 80k. Abrahamount duo saved me and McGovern goes down as GW8 hero!

Smooth: 55 points because of having Mane, Pope, Abraham,Mount, Haller and Lundstram. Saved FT as well so going to the break with 2FTs.

Big green arrow from 1.9m to just outside 1m. Second green arrow in the last three takes me from 3.4m before GW6 to 1m now. There is always hope.

    20. bench boost for every gamew…
      • 7 Years

Smooth; my prediction that city would struggle in both ends vs a stubborn Wolves with lots of pace to exploit that shitty defense. Mané, and double Chelsea nice. Playing Lundstram for first time he get points more than app points.
Rough; Triple merseyside crack within 10 minutes in second half (2 liv and 1 eve def) to ruin a very good week becoming an average one. Auba hits post instead of goal. 2.2m rank is rough, realizing that this year probably will be a more difficult one than previous years. Boly on bench with 7 points actually bordering on smooth-)
I´m happy with my team for coming weeks as it stands. Aurier and Adrian the ones i would get rid, but no real rush as i have decent alternatives.

I think I got away with a bad one!

Rough: Pukki(c) was a big fail, but in the scheme of things my other options Salah and Kane did no better. I could smell goals in the game, and there were six, but not to the team I needed to be scoring them! And the player I was close to bringing in (Auba) for Kane blanked too. The only reason I held off was due to Spurs having Watford up next and desiring two FT's for the break. Several one/two pointers, Otamendi, Robbo, Salah, Cantwell etc. Lundstram and Kelly marooned on the bench!

Smooth: Ryan, Abraham and Grealish all returning. The KdB injury meant I started Grealish as he would have been benched otherwise.

2FT's, wildcard, and OR rank of 39k so a decent start overall.

Rough: Mane to Sterling for -4. (It was supposed to be 50/50 call according to RMT-tool, and I thought Lei wouldn't concede too many). KdB to Mahrez for those 11 seconds. My best scoring defender Lundstram first on the bench. Transferred Captain Auba in to see him hit the post and blank first time this season. 29 pts and done with LMS.

Smooth: Nothing actually. Aguero didn't punish me for selling him. Disastrous gw, but on the other hand lost only 8 pts where it matters.

41 and a tiny green arrow to continue my run of tiny fluctuations around 1M OR.

      Very odd week.

Rough - Nothing from Pukki and a Salah blank; having nearly pressed the button to Mane, put me into an overthinking panic-mode mess. I had two transfer ITB and then by Sunday evening I'd transferred out Salah/ Pukki & James to be
replaced with Mane/ Wilson & Maddison. International break be damned!

Smooth - I kept faith with Tammy and he "delivered" as Captain.

      Keeping A and B brought in C and D.
      A) nailed on city defender with goal threat for 5.6 is good for me.

      B) one of the sterling or Aguero for me gone sterling cause better forwards and I prefer sterling personally

C)don’t know much about him just brought him in cause he is potentially rising think only him and mcginn are best options at 6.0 or cheaper

      D) By far the one I’m most uncomfortable with cause I still trust Salah and Liverpool over auba and arsenal but the extra 1.5 helps my squad plus Salah will come back in for either sterling or auba week 12 or 13. If it goes wrong then so be it you can’t have everyone and i think it’s the best decision I can make with the information we currently have

Some questions or statement rather i would like to just write:
    1. KDB out is too simplistic a reason for why City´s performances dip. The lack of Laporte is evident from both ends, from security at the back to his passing qualities that creates space for midfielders and consequently stretches teams defense thus bringing the midfielders and attackers into play, having more space in between and behind the opponents lines.
    2. Sané is out. He gives trickery (yes, Silva brothers and Mahrez also does that to an extent) but he also have pace and dribbling skills which gives City more width, he drags defenses out of position and thus leaving central areas more exposed. Sané does also give Pep more choice when it comes to Sterlings role, a lot of Sterlings goals comes from him tapping in goals from Sane´s crosses and his role as the one who exploits spaces behind defenses is somewhat altered a bit when Sané and KDB not on the pitch.
My point is taht while KDB plays an important role and offers one crucial ingredient to how they play, the absence of Sané and Laporte seems to have been somewhat ignored by many on here and including the writer of the article

Agree with Laporte, but not so sure about Sane. Sterling actually performs better on the left. Mendy on the left would be great for Sterling as he can create the width and allow the Englishmen to tuck in closer to the box. At the moment Sterling is having to play far too wide as nobody else can create the width

Agree with this. City need the width on the left side. iirc when mendy was fit sane would often be overlooked on the left side. But when the likes of delph and Zinchenko played lb it was important sane was on the left to provide that width.

your last sentences is actually the reason why they miss Sané. Sterling need not to be so wide when Sané plays. Mendy is not a factor as he is crocked all the time.

Not rly feeling either of them tbh.

My WC defence currently looking somewhat like TAA Soyuncu Dunk Lundstram Rico (ditching Digne and Otamendi)

Emerson is back after the iB and is 1st choice, so no. Otamendi out is not only valid from a FPl pov, he´s out. Pereira leicester is theone you want-)

I have Alonso but he was a 2 week punt / TAA placeholder. Emerson should be back shortly after the IB and was keeping Alonso out of the team. I think you missed the boat unfortunately.

The former if you’ve had Lundstram from when he was Uber cheap. If buying now I’d go the latter I think...

    Current team:

    Pope (Button)
    Ota Tomori Aurier (Lund Rico)
    KdB Mané Son Mount (Cantwell)
    Aguero Pukki Abraham

    2 FT, 0 itb.
Considering Aguero + Pukki --> Auba + Wilson
or Ota + Pukki --> Soy + Jimenez

    Thoughts?

I only brought him in as a fun mini replacement for De Bruyne. Completely backfired. Now I have no free transfers and KDB doesn’t look like he will drop in price at all (fixed)

Nope, he was always a Leicester 2 week placeholder for me. Question marks over his game time after his trip to North Korea and Spurs general malaise means I shipped him out for Maddison last night.

        Smart reasons.

He's the enabler of Pukki to Vardy for me so would like to get rid this week ideally. Subbed around 70mins the last 2 GWs too.

Realistically I would liked to keep him for Watford, in isolation that is a fixture you would expect a haul. However there's too much going on with Son and around the club for me.

The move was Son & Barnes to Maddison & Vardy. I added Pukki to Abraham as I had exact money and the price would have been 0.3 different today. I wouldn't normally move so early ahead of an IB but this was the plan all along and it seems a good opportunity to get a strong front 7 and generate a bit of TV.

if decent covers on bench early transfers that are planned is sometimes needed
that´s why i always try to have 15 players that i can rely on, so that i have the luxury of doing early moves if i want to
next week i have Boly, Cantwell and Lundstram on bench, even the latter is playable that week so if there´an injury no problem

I agree. I try not to break the, "Austin" rule but this seemed like a good chance to get ahead of the curve. Vardy is retired from internationals and if Maddison or Abraham pick up an injury then so be it. My GW9 planned bench is Rico, Cantwell & Lundstram so lots of playing options mitigates some of the risk.
