Form and fixtures aligning for Chelsea’s value-for-money attacking assets

Southampton 1-4 Chelsea

  • Goals: Danny Ings (£5.9m) | Tammy Abraham (£7.7m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), N’Golo Kante (£5.0m), Michy Batshuayi (£6.6m)
  • Assists: Yan Valery (£4.8m) | Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.9m), Willian (£7.0m), Marcos Alonso (£6.2m), Christian Pulisic (£7.2m)
  • Bonus: Willian x3, Abraham x2, Batshuayi x1

Chelsea may be a work in progress and not without their issues but the Blues are fast becoming one of the more attractive teams from a Fantasy perspective, certainly in attack.

Frank Lampard’s side are, along with Liverpool and Manchester City, in the top three for big chances, attempts on goal, shots in the box, efforts on target and, most crucial of all, actual goals scored this season.

Not since the opening day of the campaign has the west London club failed to score and they are averaging just under three goals per match in the last six Gameweeks, with Sunday’s 4-1 rout of Southampton the latest success story.

Chelsea’s attacking assets are offering not just points but value for money.

Not a single Blues player started this season priced higher than £7.5m, while Mason Mount (£6.8m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) are first and second among midfielders and forwards respectively for points per million spent in 2019/20.

This was another enjoyable day for owners of both players, with Abraham producing a brilliant lob to open the scoring and Mount doubling Chelsea’s advantage soon after when racing onto a Willian (£7.0m) pass to fire past Angus Gunn (£4.5m).

There could have been further returns, with Mount screwing horribly wide when teed up by Abraham and the latter ignored by Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.9m) when unguarded six yards out in the second half.

It wasn’t just their attacking returns that made this an encouraging afternoon, with a strutting Abraham causing Southampton plenty of problems and Mount unsurprisingly looking much more of a goal threat when deployed as a number ten rather than out on the left wing or further back in midfield.

Lampard said of Abraham after full-time:

When people are in good form, things happen for them. It comes from how Tammy has handled himself all season, from pre-season, from early season when people were questioning him in different ways, and the work ethic behind the scenes that gets him in such good nick.

He’s not just an incredible handful for defenders, with his running, holding the ball up and good feet; he’s getting the goals which is brilliant for him.

I trusted in Tammy at the start of the season. I felt it was his time to come back to Chelsea. He also has Oli Giroud, a World Cup winner, and Michy Batshuayi, a top-class Premier League striker, and he has made the position his own in the short term.

He has to keep that going because competition is key. Over the course of the season, we will need everybody, but he deserves the great week he has had and the great season he is having. I’ll keep on him because I want more.

Abraham trudged off gingerly late in the game but the Chelsea boss added:

He’s fine. He took a bang on the back of the knee, but I think he wanted a round of applause!

These two players need no introduction, of course, and each currently sits in more than 33% of FPL squads following their early-season exploits.

Might Hudson-Odoi offer us a differential third route into the Chelsea attack, though?

The young winger, playing in his preferred left-wing role, caught the eye here and supplied the assist for Abraham’s goal, also going close to scoring himself when firing at Gunn’s legs just after half-time.

Selected by just 0.9% of Fantasy bosses at the time of writing, Hudson-Odoi is a tempting option given that Chelsea sit top of our Season Ticker over the next four Gameweeks and have some appetising fixtures beyond that.

The Blues’ bloated squad is the main issue, of course, and with the likes of Ross Barkley (£5.6m), Christian Pulisic (£7.2m) and Pedro (£6.9m) waiting in the wings, the risk of rotation is an obvious one.

Having said that, Lampard has shown commendable loyalty to some of his ‘favourites’, with Mount an ever-present starter in the league, Abraham making the line-up in the last six Gameweeks and even Willian handed four successive 90-minute run-outs since his return from injury.

The Chelsea head coach’s trust in youth may also be to Hudson-Odoi’s advantage.

Lampard said of Hudson-Odoi’s performance:

He did well. It was a great assist for Tammy’s goal, a great ball. His work-rate was good, he stayed tight to the midfield and released himself to the full-back. It was all the things I want from the wingers.

He could have got a goal, he got in behind a few times where he can be lethal. That’s where I want him.

He can get better. He has had a serious injury so fitness has been a bit of an issue, and looking after him. Now he’s showing he’s getting towards proper match fitness.

Willian deserves an honourable mention for his man-of-the-match display down the right flank, teeing up not only Mount for his goal but also Hudson-Odoi for his aforementioned big chance too.

Lampard said of the Brazilian:

Willian was the standout today, without a doubt. If you wanted to show our wingers what we want from them, we would show them a video of his work ethic today, and his quality and burst of pace on the ball.

In the last four or five games he has been our best player. It’s a great thing to say when you have got players who are examples on the pitch around these young boys.

Chelsea’s defence have made strides in recent weeks following their early-season struggles but this was another match without a clean sheet (they only have one to their name this season) and Fikayo Tomori (£4.7m) was not his usual composed self, almost gifting Danny Ings (£5.9m) a goal with a slack backpass on the stroke of half-time – the excellent Jorginho (£5.0m) getting back to clear the Southampton striker’s goalbound shot.

The Saints’ goal was a weak one from a Chelsea perspective, too, with Yan Valery (£4.8m) waltzing past six players and teeing up Ings via a fortuitous deflection off Kurt Zouma (£4.7m).

The Blues’ boss said after the game:

The fact we allowed someone to stroll into our box to make it 2-1. We switched off from the throw-in, which we had talked about, and then we offered them up a chance at the end of the first half which would’ve made half-time much nervier than what it was.

To be fair there will be a lot of weeks I will sit here and say the boys at the back have been brilliant – and they have recently – but you can’t afford to give little moments. Those are pointers for all of us that we are not there, we are nowhere near the finished article at the minute.

Still, with Chelsea’s next four opponents all in the bottom half of the table for goals scored, it would be a surprise if there isn’t at least one or two shut-outs to come before the November international break.

While Chelsea’s forthcoming matches are appealing, Southampton’s own fixtures are anything but.

This was the second of seven straight matches against teams that finished in the top ten in 2018/19 and it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side slide into the bottom three by the time their fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Their players are unlikely to appeal to Fantasy managers for the time being, then, but it is worth noting how Hasenhuttl’s troops are performing given that our Leicester, Manchester City and Arsenal assets will be facing the Saints before we reach December.

The in-form Ings, again keeping Che Adams (£5.6m) out of the side, was a threat with his pressing from the front, going close with a second-half header on top of the two efforts we have already discussed.

Nathan Redmond (£6.3m) fired narrowly over from distance but in truth there wasn’t much intensity in attack, aside from the busy Ings.

The defending was just as bad, with the combination of Hasenhuttl’s ever-changing, sometimes baffling tactics and the Saints’ tendency to shoot themselves in the foot costing them dearly.

Gunn made a big error of judgement, not for the first time this season, when rushing out for Abraham’s goal and it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see Alex McCarthy (£4.3m) between the posts for the trip to Molineux.

Only Watford and Norwich have conceded more goals than Southampton this season, which will be encouraging news for Fantasy managers whose assets face the Saints in the coming weeks.

Hasenhuttl said after full-time:

I think this game was a little bit too easy for the opponent.

We only have a chance to turn around if you see clear and be very honest and say ‘ok, this is not enough, we must do it much better’, and then we have to work on it.

If we are as a team more committed than we are at the moment then we have chances to take something.

At the moment the work against the ball is not really in the net we normally do it and in one-against-one situations we know they are always very strong.

Have decided to get in Vardy.
Still have a big decision to make.

    A) Pukki -> Vardy & play VvD (mun)
    B) Ayew - > Vardy, by downgrading VvD & play Pukki (bou)

So which one do you think is better?

Q1) Thoughts on going without a pool attacker for the next 4 and WCing after?

Q2) thoughts on Auba, great fixtures but do stats and eye test back it up?

will Pool players outperform the upgrades you make in other areas? thats the real question

I might be alone on this, but I don't consider Auba an upgrade on Wilson, and I now have Wilson + Mane

Spending more does not necessarily equal upgrading. There are many balanced squads right now with Salah/Mane + TAA + Sterling + KDB/Mahrez + Tammy + Mount + Soy/Pereira + Lund + Rico/Kelly, with the differences really coming in dropping one of these assets I listed and whether you have Wilson or Auba

So the upgrade I guess you're making... Is to have Madders/Mahrez in Salah's place (you wouldn't be selling Mane due to recency bias, so I guess you have Salah) and then Auba for... Pukki?

Could work, yes. But I don't agree that it's an upgrade. Not when Arsenal's midfield is crap so Auba feeds off scraps... With Wilson going toe-to-toe with him so far and Vardy, the flat-track bully, about to go on a run of bulliable fixtures... And Tammy being Tammy

“I might be alone on this, but I don't consider Auba an upgrade on Wilson”

With you all the way on this - always been skeptical of Auba after an extended period of frustration with him last season

Wonderful player on his day mind you... but frustrating for FPL

I agree, for the next few fixtures at least.

Can see Aubameyang popping up with a goal but are these fixtures really thay amazing from an attacking standpoint?

            1. SHU - Conceded 2 in last 4
            2. CRY - Conceded 2 in last 3
            3. WOL - Conceded 1 in last 3
            4. LEI - Conceded 4 in last 4

Tottenham & Wolves' capitulations in GW5 feel like slight anomalies, and Leicester have played three of the big six teams in those four.

Newcastle (!) have beaten both spurs and Man Utd this season

Liverpool’s next 2 games are against... Man Utd and spurs...

Please tell me what I’m missing here in terms of why on god’s holy green earth would you want to avoid Liverpool attack

United defence is actually pretty good, its their attack thats trash. Spurs is ripe for the taking, but would you be surprised if it ended up like 2-1 or 1-0 for LIV? I wouldnt be

I’d be shocked if Utd managed to restrict Liverpool to one or two to be honest - look at their results & check who they have played - is there anyone within a country mile of the quality of Liverpool?

And yet Utd are still struggling to make the top 10...

They haven’t played a team of that calibre yet this season, and morale is getting LOWER with each passing game rather than higher

I could see a potentially historically embarrassing result if Utd aren’t careful, and even if they are careful Liverpool still have the quality to score heavily

Could be wrong of course though 🙂

Honestly, there’s nothing to suggest they will be tight games - the gulf in quality is far too vast

That’s not the same thing as saying they WON’T be tight though, as anything can happen in a one off game - but i’d Be backing Liverpool 9 times out of 10 on current mutual form for both of those games

I don’t want to be relying on the 1 in 10 chance, even though it’s still obviously a possibility 😉

United are in complete disarray and they have conceded against supposedly inferior sides. I expect Liverpool to hammer both them and Spurs. Can't possibly understand why these 2 games are considered to be "difficult fixtures".

I mean, City has lost to Norwich and Wolves on a 3 day rest. Liverpool conceded 3 to Leipzig within 20 minutes of game time. Stranger things have happened in the past month...

I think Pool wins the games, but its not exactly a walk in the park. Pool hasnt looked convincing themselves lately either.

Theres a definite argument to be made is all im saying

I think the argument is that Utd could get lucky though, rather than there being any logical reason why Liverpool wouldn’t continue to score goals against both them and spurs

On the eye test I don’t even think utd’s defence has been good - they’ve always looked shaky when tested, Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Maguire, Young - all of them can be (and have been) exploited by much worse attacks than Mané, Salah, Firmino, Robbo, TAA

If Allison’s back it could get very ugly

Really? Haha and here i was thinking MUN defence has looked decent.

Also depends on AWB availability as well. I dont know, just dont think the descriptions of the demise of MUN and TOT are a little exaggerated. Id be very comfortable starting TAA against MUN though

Lindelof has been terrifyingly bad wheni’ve Watched him - palace exploited him beautifully with high balls, he let Jordan Ayew bully him... Tuanzebe & Maguire messing about with the offside for Auba’s goal... Young I’d just out of his depth as a premier league fullback (imvho)... I didn’t think they were great v West Ham

And those teams are puppy dogs compared to the pack of hungry wolves they’ll face in liverpool’s Front 3 & fullbacks

But as I said maybe I’m reading this all wrong & Utd will do ok - I just don’t see it though 🙁

      1) I've asked myself a similar question, and I think I'm going without a Pool attacker until GW13. MU and Spurs are poor, but there's no way I'd captain Salah or Mané ahead of Aubameyang or a City attacker when they face them, and I don't think I'm the only one.

      2) He's returned in every game except the last one, Arsenal are currently 3rd and embark on a fantastic run, he's a fantastic option.

A bit of a paradox- I don't think any forwards at 4.5 are preferred. A lot of rotation at BHA and Connolly has only started one match. Not for me.

Bottomed earlier... Current team is :

    Pope Button
    TAA Otamendi Söyüncü Lundstram Diop
    Salah KDB Mount McGinn Cantwell
    Agüero Pukki Abraham

Here is my plan up to GW13 :
GW9 : Salah and Pukki to Maddison and Aubameyang - £2m ITB remaining
    GW10 : Cantwell to Yarmolenko
    GW11 : ??
    GW12 : Save FT
GW13 : Yarmolenko and Agüero to Mané and forward below £7.2m

Of course this is adaptable in many ways and injuries could happen, but the main steps are to go with Agüero and Auba who will share the captaincy between GWs 9 and 12, and to get Mané for Liverpool's fixture turn in GW13. Thoughts on this, fellas?

    1. Karhumies
      • 11 Years

I have a very similar team, and I decided for GW9 to go with Mane, KDB, Mount, Auba, C.Wilson, Abraham. In other words, dropping Pukki & Aguero (rather than Mane) to get in Abraham and C.Wilson with extra money ITB to upgrade either Cantwell or Saka to Maddison for GW10.

Yeah I've considered something similar, but each time I look at the upcoming fixtures, I can't bring myself to drop Agüero, even with the threat of rotation.

My logic after the MCity vs. Norwich and vs. Wolves fiascos is that if I am captaining someone from MCity again this season, it's going to be KDB captain. And if I am not captaining either Aguero or Mane, Mane is cheaper and without Pep rotation risk.

          1. LE CHARO
            • 4 Years
            4 years, 5 months ago

That's a very sound logic. I've had KDB since GW1 and never gave him the armband, so he's definitely going to get it from now on given my ridiculous captain scores. But despite their last game against Wolves, MC remain the best attacking side of the league and in the next 3, they seem much more likely to score big than Liverpool imo, and a double up could give big rewards if we're lucky with Pep rotation (that's a big if). Tough choice.

            1. Karhumies
              • 11 Years
              4 years, 5 months ago

Well if you want a double up without captaining, DSilva is the cheapest option and his price tag makes me think "hmm, I wouldn't mind Pep randomly rotating that 7.X as much as rotating a 12.X mil player".

              1. LE CHARO
                • 4 Years
                4 years, 5 months ago

He's not a bad option but at that price, I'd rather have Maddison. I also highly doubt he can match Salah or Mané and I still need someone of that caliber, can't go with just KDB and Auba as my big-hitters. I can accept Kun being rotated if he delivers when he plays, which he has mostly done so far. Also, City can't afford to drop points anymore, so I expect high motivation from their assets, and combined with Kun's fantastic underlying stats, I think we're not far from a hat-trick. Among his next 3 opponents, at least 2 look like adequate candidates.

                  4 years, 5 months ago

That being said, we can only fit 3 forwards into the team and there are a bunch of forwards with cheaper price tags with less rotation, more consistent attacking returns and very decent fixtures. I want the captain to explode, but when I'm not captaining, I am looking for consistency and an affordable price tag so I get a more balanced XI.

Also, with how Chelsea have been scoring left and right, Tammy is a heavy hitter and I plan to captain him GW9 with C.Wilson as the VC.

Agree with your statement on the cheap forward options, but it seems to be the road everyone is taking and I'd like to explore a different approach there. That being said, I can still keep Agüero, do Salah and Pukki to Mané and C.Wilson, and simply delay the acquisition of Aubameyang to GW12 for example.

Tammy is indeed a fantastic option, and my armband is currently on him until we have some news for KDB.

I think a main reason for this trend is: we have 3 forward slots, let's reserve 1 of them for Aguero/Auba, so we have 2 left. Haller, Abraham, Pukki, Wilson, Vardy, Jimenez, Firmino we are spoiled for choice in the 7-9M bracket. If we go cheaper, we have Maupay, Ings, Wesley all in fine form and even Connelly has recently hauled.

Mids we have 5 slots. Let's reserve 1 for KDB and leave the rest open. In that same 7-9 range we have...Mount, Maddison...DSilva? If we go cheaper...Lanzini, Iwobi, Buendia, Yarmolenko, McGinn, Cantwell, Guendouzi, Saka? Not necessarily terrible players but not as explosive as the attackers in the same price bracket. Which encourages us to "go big" with mids (Salah, Sterling, Mane) and "go midrange" with forwards because the "midrange" mids just seem less appealing overall if you choose "big" forwards + "midrange" mids instead.

                      1. LE CHARO
                        • 4 Years

I get why we have this trend and before I wildcarded in GW7, my frontline was Abraham - Pukki - Barnes so I was all in, but at the time both Agüero and Auba had returned in every single game and looked like forgotten options around here. I thought the time had come to get them in given their reliability compared to Sterling for example, who has been a disappointment since GW4.

But you're right, the 7-9M range for the forwards is much more appealing than the corresponding one for the mids, and in the plan I've written above I'm not extremely convinced by the midfield. I had slightly overlooked C. Wilson and now that I think about it, he looks like a much better option than Maddison given the calibre of the opposition he's facing next. You've given me good food for thought there, thanks for your input.

Why do Liverpool's fixtures turn in GW13 ?
Based on the form of the teams they are playing there is only one tricky fixture in GW12. 9 & 10 are potentially easy with plenty of scope for goals. Even the City game offers plenty of scope for goals.

      1. LE CHARO

I agree with you that MU and Spurs look terrible at the moment, but I wouldn't call them easy fixtures, certainly not easier than what Auba will be facing anyway. MU's problems are mainly upfront, but at the back they are one of the best teams in the league at the moment. I expect Liverpool to win at Old Trafford, but not comfortably. And I strongly disagree regarding GW12, last year that fixture ended 0-0.

Pretty template I'd say. Personally prefer Vardy over Wilson, or to at least have cash itb to switch Wilson to Vardy. But that's a luxury for those with great TV

Yeah, would probably be better but I don't know how I can afford him tbh.

Is being template a bad thing? I've not looked at any other teams so I wouldn't know.

Not convinced by Maddison, Tomori, Burn & Cantwell but there isn't much about at around them prices.

Your bench is a little too rich, imo. Your third sub on most GWs could be scoring well

Burn to Rico, Cantwell to Dendoncker. Dendo can be 3rd sub on the GWs when you'd like to keep Lund/Rico out of autosub reach, like when they face big 6. Lund and Rico rotate well as first subs, making the 5th midfielder kinda unnecessary, especially when he's being sold by so many

Even if the money you get from these moves can't be spent on your squad, keep it in the bank. You'd want it later

Do we think Salah will recover for the United game?

What's the likely outcome of the Bilva charge?

Basically I need to switch around some players on my wildcard team to catch Auba's rise and not sure if I should hold Mahrez (have Sterling too).

I'm starting to accept the fact that if KDB's announced fit before the GW9 deadline, I'll be buying him back at 10.0 on the same wildcard where I sold him at 9.8

    Good times 🙂

Fix reckons he's dropping tonight if that is worth anything (probably not by recent form).
Auba not rising now too - not sure who to believe!

C and D are the safest. B is a worthwhile risk too.
