United assets offer FPL managers little incentive ahead of fixture swing

Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester United

  • Goal: Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m)
  • Assist: Jetro Willems (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Willems x3, M. Longstaff x2, Martin Dubravka (£5.0m)

A fixture swing for Manchester United beckons after the visit of Liverpool in Gameweek 9 but who’d back their Fantasy assets at present?

The Red Devils sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 10-14, taking on five clubs who are currently ranked tenth or below.

The two remaining teams without a Premier League clean sheet to their names this season immediately follow Jurgen Klopp’s side and, on Sunday’s evidence, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops need all the help they can get.

While poor defeats to Crystal Palace and West Ham were perhaps borderline excusable given how well those two teams are performing at present, this latest loss plumbed new depths.

Solskjaer’s side faced a Newcastle team who had been battered 5-0 by Leicester City a week ago, who sat second-bottom of the table and who had the lowest expected goals tally of any top-flight club this season.

The Red Devils’ failure to create anything of note from open play was alarming, with seven of their 12 chances coming from dead-ball situations.

The visitors’ only clear-cut opportunity saw Harry Maguire (£5.5m) nod an Ashley Young (£5.4m) corner wide from inside the six-yard box but there was precious else to report, with Marcos Rojo‘s (£4.8m) header over from another Young delivery as close as United came to an equaliser.

Marcus Rashford (£8.4m) was left isolated up front but did himself few favours with a sulky display, touching the ball just nine times in the opening 45 minutes and frequently drifting out to the left away from the danger zone.

A last-ditch Fabian Schar (£5.0m) tackle prevented Rashford from tapping in on 70 minutes but that was as close as the England striker came to a chance as he failed to register a single shot on goal.

Solskjaer said of Rashford’s display:

He’s working hard. As I said to the boys at half-time today, you feel for him because he’s running, running and running and he doesn’t get the service.

The first half was very poor, that was the poorest we’ve been because we gave so many sloppy balls away, it seemed like we couldn’t control the ball and we couldn’t find the combinations. Of course, in the second half we dominated but we didn’t create enough.”

With Rashford toiling out wide, the Red Devils had just 16 touches in the Newcastle box – only four teams had fewer in Gameweek 8.

Daniel James (£6.2m) had no joy down the left flank either, so much so that he and Andreas Pereira (£5.0m) swapped wings in a bid to break the stalemate – to little avail.

James has produced four successive blanks now, with his rate of shots worsening to one every 71.8 minutes over that period.

Opposing teams stopping the Wales international from cutting in off the left flank onto his favoured right foot obviously nullifies a lot of his goal threat, something Leicester, West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle have done quite well over the last month – although Norwich may be more obliging in Gameweek 10.

The return of Paul Pogba (£8.4m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) from injury may help United, of course.

Pogba was far from outstanding in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal but was made to look like a world-beater by understudy Fred (£5.3m) on Sunday, while Martial was dovetailing quite nicely with Rashford before his injury in Gameweek 3.

Returning bodies in defence may also help reinforce a backline that hasn’t been too bad on the underlying stats front this season.

Three of United’s first-choice back four were absent through injury or illness yesterday, with Victor Lindelof (£5.4m) joining Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.4m) on the sidelines.

Only three clubs have conceded fewer goals than Solskjaer’s side this season, with no top-flight side allowing fewer big chances.

The Norwegian said of Sunday’s display and the goal they conceded:

We gave them too many counter-attacks, lifted their crowd, you could see they were behind their team, behind Brucey and it was impossible for me to put one or two players where they should have been.

There are players that try to organise it but couldn’t and when that happens, six or seven back in our own box, but we couldn’t defend that ball. There were two attempts to tackle, from Dan and Fred.

Newcastle deserve credit despite their opponents’ performance, with Steve Bruce getting a reaction from his players after the mauling at Leicester.

It was perhaps no surprise that the Magpies looked more comfortable in the 5-4-1/3-4-3 shape that Rafael Benitez favoured in 2018/19.

When Bruce has stuck with that tried-and-tested system, the Magpies have won two, drawn two and lost just one (away at Liverpool), keeping three clean sheets along the way.

In the games he has experimented with a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2, Newcastle have lost all three and conceded nine goals.

The promotion of teenager Matthew Longstaff (£4.5m) to the starting XI alongside elder brother Sean (£5.0m) brought a lot of energy to the centre of midfield, something Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) hadn’t offered much of in the turgid 0-0 draw with Brighton a fortnight ago.

Longstaff is a defensive midfielder by trade but looked a threat against the Red Devils, striking the bar before firing in the winner on his debut in the 71st minute.

Bruce said of the younger Longstaff:

When it fell to him, I thought I’ve seen him drill them in in training but to do it on the big stage…

He’s been a breath of fresh air. He just wants to play football. I thought who’s this ginger kid when we were in China. He’s been good in training.

It didn’t faze him. He enjoyed it. He probably didn’t sleep well last night. He won’t get much sleep again tonight.

It’s quite a story. I’ve been going 20 odd years and not been able to beat Manchester United and he’s done it straight away.

Allan Saint-Maximin‘s (£5.4m) trickery caught the eye but the Magpies’ attacking players are unlikely to be the flavour of the month even when their fixtures turn for the better at the end of October, given their ongoing struggle for goals.

Their budget defensive assets could potentially re-enter our thinking, however, on the proviso that Bruce sticks with the current set-up.

This was a side, after all, that kept 11 clean sheets in 2018/19, a total that only six clubs could better.

Newcastle sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 10-18, meeting only Manchester City of the ‘big six’ along the way.

No side has kept more clean sheets than the Magpies this season, while only four teams have allowed fewer big chances in home matches.

FPL managers will likely baulk at paying £5.0m for Schar but Jetro Willems (£4.5m), with two attacking returns and two clean sheets in four starts, is a name to monitor – the return of Matt Ritchie (£5.3m) could ruin that idea, of course.

priced too low and therefore, like Martial, his price will not go down by much, maybe 0.1 but most likely his re-flagged or off-flagged

I am on a WC and I am short of 0.7m to get to this team. The 7 players whose sale prices I have mentioned in the brackets are possible downgrades to get me back to the budget.

Any suggestions on where the downgrade should come from?

    Pope||Heaton (4.5)
    Alexander-Arnold (7.2), Otamendi (5.5), Soyuncu || Dunk(4.6) , Lundstram
Salah, DeBruyne, Maddison, Mount (6.4) || Dendoncker
    Aubameyang, Jimenez(7.1), Abraham(7.5)

Definitely there isn't much to choose between Salah and Mane based on the statistics. So I totally get the logic behind saving some bucks by having Mane. But FPL and football in general appears more fun for me while having Salah in the team than having Mane. I enjoy the game more as a Salah owner. Just a personal preference/bias 🙂

Mane has been outscoring Salah since the middle of last season.

Mane has nearly double the goal conversion rate of Salah so far this season. Shot accuracy also better than Salah.

              So I have to disagree.

PS: try owning Mane. Its much more exciting.

Like everyone else said, loads of options to save, only need one keeper (Pope), Mane arguably better option than Salah anyway,l and Ota is in terrible form and likely to lose his place soon so go for defender under 5 mil. I’d do all 3 ands upgrade Dendo/Jimi.

Christina mentioned Heaton, he can go but personally i like having two goalies. Not sure you would get many reposts that recommends Ota out, but i will. Firstly, your team has 3 good starters for most weeks and Lundstram also. The most obvious pick at 4-8 and below might be tomori, if you look at games where you will be not overly keen to play dunk, soy or lund (gw9, 12) he could come in. Gw12 looks particularly iffy for you, so a Burnley, West ham, even Watford def could be of interest so you need not to play both Dunk and Soy that week.
And you def do not want to play ota that week-)
so, Ota out for one cheapish def for your liking in gw12 is my suggestion, King is another if you fancy BOU.

Having King in place of Jimenez is also a good idea considering BOU's next two fixtures

Don't get talked into Salah - Mane. He may have outscored Salah for a while, but you need to stick to the big guns, especially if you feel big scores are around the corner. Liverpool and City have the best players in the league and they will all be among the top scorers come the end of the season.

Mane is flavor of the week, Salah could easily outscore him by a large margin next gameweek.

Not 100% convinced that most teams will sit back against Wolves. Top 6 sides most certainly will not, nor would middle table teams. Even the likes of Norwich and Everton in the relegation zone will try their best to get goals against Wolves.

Having seen their 2 textbook counter attacks against City, I think the likes of Jimenez will start getting their name on the score sheet more often in the coming weeks.

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Pereira Tomori (Lund, Kelly)
    Mané KdB Maddison Mount (Cantwell)

The big move would basically be Sterling -> Auba, pretty hesitant but Sterling at 12m is not giving value rn... Other only in form player to make way would be McGinn

Do I give the Everton defence anymore time or is it time to get rid? Mina -> Chilwell or Pereira is tempting..

WHU at home not a terrible fixture but suppose you’d think they will score.

Just know Mina will score sooner rather than later though.

Can afford to take a chance or two as still have the WC. Thinking the double Leicester defence may be the way to go.
    1. Salah + Pukki -> Maddison + Aubameyang (1.4m).
    2. VVD + Smith -> Pereira + Soyuncu/ Tomori (0.2m/0.1m).
    3. Other- WC etc.

Probably a bad time to discuss it - but what are people's thoughts on sub-premium city midfielders?

Have been holding Kdb and Sterling for a long while (until the injury and currently have Mahrez), but feels odd to be considering just KDB alone.

    1. Top Lad Dakes.

It does feel odd not gonna lie. I’m on WC and (having sold KDB to find Auba in for a hit this week, woe me), Sterling is currently my only City player (have ditched Otacrap for Dunk, city look too shaky and I feel money better used up the pitch rn).

However, should a) KDB be declared definitely fit for GW9 and b) Sterling plays significant minutes, id strongly be considering KDB in instead as my sole city player rn, as crazy as it may seem to only go with one for the time being.... tough decision

KDB over Sterling also allows me to get Vardy alongside Abraham and Auba up top (currently have Maddison as an alternative, playing 352)

    2. Top Lad Dakes.
      • 7 Years

Other than those two, I’m not really interested in any unless Bernardo gets a ban, in which case Mahrez would tempt me for sure as a short term punt - although still risky, as evidenced this week!

With cry, AVL, SOU up next I think a double up is still sensible. Before Wolves they put 3 past Everton and 8 past Watford. I currently own Sterling and Silva and will probably hold for a few more weeks, or turn one into De Bruyne if fit.

  21. Top Lad Dakes.

    On WC:
    A) Rico Ayew
    B) Tomori Connolly

Which? The forward will only play when they have a good fixture if that (other forwards currently are Abraham Auba). The defender would be competing for 2 spots alongside Dunk Lundstram Soyuncu (Trent is the other defender).

Thanks 🙂 currently have A but bit of a tough choice.

Interesting - why? way I saw it, neither Chelsea or BOU are gonna keep many CS, but Rico is cheaper (I got at 4.0) and also probably has better attacking threat.

And Ayew is probably a better option than Connolly as a 3rd striker?

Im actually looking for a genuine advice here because there is so many options and im surelly gonna pick the wrong one. Please look at current team and advise on what would you do:

    GK: Heaton / 4.0
    DEF: Trent / Ota/ Montoya / Lowton / Lund
MID: Salah / Sterling / KDB / Cantwell / Dend
FWD: Wilson / Tammy / Haller

All have solid fixture, thing is that i have 2Ft which i have to spend (at least one). What would you do here? O.1 itb
    Im looking at something like

    OUT: Salah, Haller
    IN: Maddison, Auba

WC also intact. Please advise if you have better solution,..and cheers for having patient for long post

Yeah probably doesn’t need WC tbh. I wouldn’t be so quick to ditch your only Liverpool attacker this - they do play spurs and United next 😉

      Main problem areas imo are:
      1) heaton - tough immediate fixtures, but tbh just hope for save points!
      2) Otamendi - I’m ditching (I am on WC tho) for dunk, however since you have Montoya I’d suggest Soyuncu maybe?
      3) haller - still not a bad pick tbf. Over the coming weeks though I’d try to get enough £ to swap him for Vardy maybe?? (2) should help with that, as could maybe salah to mane at some point

      1. Silecro
        • 6 Years

Yeah, my head hurts just thinking of ditching liverpool attacker. As far as def, ota > soyoncu is the one on my mind for this week, which should enable salah & haller > mane & vardy come gw10

I like it other than a) Otamendi and b) gaz.

I’m ditching Otamendi on WC, as city look very shaky at the back rn without laporte - can see them getting back to winning again, but with likely score lines of 4-1 or something. And Otamendi isn’t gonna get a tap in goal every week like watford.

I also don’t see spurs getting many CS, and I just prefer Pope. Although thinking about it now gaz could be a nice differential if spurs get their crap together. I’d also be very nervous w/o a Liverpool defender but that’s just me.

Similar team, I’ve got Auba in my WC rn tho - any reason you don’t?

        Thanks for the comments.

Otamendi may be shifted to Matip but I fully expect City to bounce back and their fixtures are too good to ignore. Liverpool on the other hand have a tricky run especially when you factor in UCL.

I think Gazzaniga over the next 10-15 gameweeks will outscore Pope.

Very tempting tbh... if salah is fit tho, he does play a bang out of form United and spurs next, and it’s not too long before his fixture swing. I’d wait til later in the IB if possible and see how things shape up

A lot of people getting rid of Sterling and City assets.
I for one will be brining in Sterling for Salah, triple up over the next 3.
    Sterling, KDB and Kun.
