Captain Poll

FPL managers set for more tough captaincy choices in Gameweek 9

After weeks of captaincy frustration, Fantasy Premier League managers are set for more tough armband decisions ahead of Gameweek 9.

Manchester City and Liverpool both have relatively challenging away matches next weekend, which could deter us from the usual suspects.

Pep Guardiola’s defending champions travel to Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four matches this season.

That strike came in the dying embers of a 1-1 draw with Wolves in Gameweek 6, courtesy of Diogo Jota (£6.1m).

Outside of that, the Eagles have kept clean sheets Everton, Aston Villa and Norwich in front of their own fans.

Manchester City assets underwhelmed in their 2-0 defeat to Wolves

Naturally, Manchester City do usually pose a greater threat, with owners of Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) all hoping for both starts and returns this weekend.

But the Citizens’ recent poor performance against Wolves in Gameweek 8 might go some way to putting Fantasy managers off for the captaincy, especially considering Palace’s home defensive record.

Meanwhile, Liverpool travel to Old Trafford, a ground at which they have never won in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

In all competitions, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has drawn three and lost one at Manchester United’s historic stadium during his time in charge of the Reds.

In total, his side has scored three goals there but on their most recent visit, back in February, the match ended 0-0.

Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Liverpool attackers for the captaincy in Gameweek 9

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have been far from special going forward this season, their defence has shown some improvement on last season.

They have two Premier League clean sheets at Old Trafford in 2019/20, against Chelsea and Leicester and have been boasting some relatively impressive defensive underlying statistics.

All of this is likely to leave nagging questions at the back of the mind for Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) owners when it comes to the armband.

Given Manchester United’s shocking attacking displays of late, perhaps Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) might receive more consideration than their midfield colleagues?

Aubameyang and Arsenal are likely to find life tough at Sheffield United next Monday

Even those looking at Arsenal assets such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) may have their concerns about a Monday night trip to Sheffield United.

The Blades have conceded just seven goals this season, only Liverpool have allowed fewer, while Chris Wilder has made all the top-six sides work for their results thus far.

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw in Gameweek 4, while the only reason Klopp’s men scored at Bramall Lane in Gameweek 7 was because of an uncharacteristic error from Dean Henderson (£4.5m).

For all of those reasons, Gameweek 9 could be see a host of differential options top the upcoming captain poll, which you can now vote in (below).

Wilson will be the favourite Bournemouth option ahead of Norwich’s trip to the Vitality Stadium

Naturally, there will be a lot of consideration for Bournemouth assets in Gameweek 9 as they host a Norwich side that conceded five at home to Aston Villa last time out.

Callum Wilson (£7.9m) is expected to be the favourite of these having registered attacking returns in all but one match so far this season.

Those unable to get the England international into their squads may also look to Josh King (£6.3m), who has double-figure hauls in both of his last two matches at the Vitality Stadium – and remains the Cherries’ penalty taker.

Abraham has been in decent statistical form of late

One of just two of Gameweek 8’s top 20 captains to actually deliver attacking returns was Tammy Abraham (£7.7m), who, with each passing week, looks more and more capable of factoring in the conversation for the armband.

After the first eight matches of the 2019/20 campaign, the Chelsea forward is joint-top of the league for goals scored, alongside Aguero (eight).

Abraham is also top of the league for shots on target, which is probably why his bonus score is also looking quite healthy, a total of 11 to his name thus far – more than any other player.

Ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Stamford Bridge, it would be surprising to see Abraham not considered among the best options, especially given the Magpies’ record on the road this season.

In four away matches in 2019/20, Steve Bruce’s men have conceded 11 times, an average of 2.75 per game.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll on our website, either below or in the sidebar on the right.

Joe and David will be speaking about the debate in the captain video, which you can watch on our YouTube channel from 12:30 pm on Monday.

For balance, Norwich let up a lot of shots in the box, Newcastle are also very poor in that regard, but not quite at Norwich levels!

Still another set of international fixtures to go.

Would not be surprised to see one of the captaincy candidates to get injured.

Therefore, too early to decide on a captain yet.

Captaincy picks aren't like free transfers, you can choose now then change your mind later. This week looks set to be the most open yet on terms captaincy options. Picking the right differential or premium banker could be huge!

But you can only vote in the poll once (you can't change your mind as it recognises you have already voted).

And why spend effort now when you could be using that time to do something else, knowing that you will spend the time later anyway to decide.

    Posted on old article.

Am I the only one who thinks Salah is a better choice than Mané on WC if can have a good team still?

With his stats still great and even on an “off” season like last year he was still at the top of the pile for goals, I don’t see why I’d choose Mané unless it’s enabling an important upgrade.

I know people look at very recent form and make decisions but I’m not so sure!

    Thoughts?

Mane’s sulk at Burnley impacted on Salah.

Times in games post that game where the old Salah would be greedy but instead he’s tried to pass. He’s failing the eye test.

Mane is flavour of the week cos he git a goal and assist vs Leicester.

When Mo got 2 vs Arsenal he was flavour of the week.

FFS can be a fickle place.

Mo is the 1st player in my team and he'll be the last to leave.

I think the old advice of just keep the one you chose for a long period (until next wc) is as good as any. I´ve chosen Mané on WC. Firmino is the one who should be debated, as he will outscore his best season by far and is 9.6m, 2m cheaper than Mané, 3m than Salah.

    I'm well up for a -12
    Aub Hanley Kolasinac Adrian out

Why spend FT on a temporary GK (that too in a team in dire state atm)
      I'd rather get Pope/Henderson.

Re Tierney, i think it's a huge risk with a hit & Arsenal won't become great defensively overnight so CS chances are always less. So ....

Honestly I like kolasinac in a kind of ironic way but tierney is miles better than him. Kolasinac is poor defensively and struggles in a back 4 which is how we’ve played all season. As you say look out at the press conference, tierney may not get 90 against Sheffield but I think he’s gunna be a player lots will start getting in

I actually would have 0.4 ITB with this squad - this midfield would be so much fun, but I’m backing TAA, Robbo, Vardy, Maddison and hopefully Ota to justify my faith in them over Sterling & Mané

    Pope,
    Tomori, Soyboy, Lundstram
    Salah, Mané, Sterling, KDB
    Wilson, Tammy, Connolly

I agree re Ota and Digne but if Vitamen C (lol) has triple Pool then he should keep.

The player points table is starting to point at Pool assets. Last season which players finished top? We are fortunate the likes of Salah and Mane are not listed as forwards.

Look at the Prem Table at the moment.

Pool assets are going to romp again.

If you watched the last CL match LFC played then you may just want to hang onto Robbo. If you can double up on TAA then do it. Otherwise keep VVD.

Many will say Salah to Mane to have an extra 0.8 or so to use elsewhere but on whom?

McGinn is a great pick. Depending on how many FT's have I would Ota, Digne and Romeu out.

You could fit Mount into your midfield.

Robbo, VVD, Romeu, Drink, Montoya, Digne, salah, pukki all go.
Get TAA, Lundstram, Boly, Soyuncu, Rico/Kelly, Mane, Maddison, Guendo for cheap mid, and Maybe Kun/Auba with the funds from defence.

The fixtures are coming and he will get more BAPs if Lei keep more CSs. But yeah I prefer TAA plus 2 4.5-5.0 options, lundy and Rico/Kelly because I've had more points from attack this season than last.

Pereira not the worst option, but not worth it for me.

GL! I hate when I'm just waiting for my player to get a penalty, it not a fun way to play the game but its effective as we have seen with Mili in the past and with CHO back Chelsea have an ever higher chance of getting pens as he is very direct.

“I like A but this Pereira isnt worth 6.2”

I pretty much agree with the sentiment here - although I would perhaps say it a bit differently in that Pereira looks fairly priced, whereas some more of his defensive brethren (even within his own club in some cases!) look underpriced

I think Pereira is also benefitting from a MASSIVE dose of recency bias with those back to back goals still fresh in folks heads...

Rodgers doesn’t seem to play him OOP the same way Puel did either - he has 12 returns in his last 43 games... 8 in 24 under Puel... 4 in 19 under Rodgers

A few more weeks without an attacking return & he turns into a transfer out to afford a bandwagon, then he nicks another G or A, then sellers get remorseful, some buy him back etc etc

Wouldn’t put anyone off him either mind you, who knows, maybe he’ll score another goal soon!

The honeymoon's now well and truly over for Norwich and now it's time for them to wise up and switch to survival mode and play ten at the back - so it's thanks and goodbye to Mssrs Cantwell and Pukki. Mount's a shoo-in to relace Cantwell but the only way I can afford him is to get bring in Aaron Connelly up front as well. I know nothing about Brighton so I'm asking if he's a now seen as a 4.5m bargain or just a one hit wonder?

If Connelly pick is based on playing him every week then I would not as he ain't nailed.

Norwich cannot rely on their defence to keep them up so doubt Farke will go ultra defensive.

      Norwich will keep attacking IMO.

Farke is most likely secure in the job even if they went down. They didn’t take any financial risks when they came up in the transfer market so there’s no absolute pressure to stay in the league for those reasons. They’ll have fun.

I feel sorry for Norwich, they’ve been riddled with so many injuries.

I think their results would have been a lot more positive if they’d had their best 11 available every week.

get rid of pukki, no point in getting rid of vvd when he has one of the most impotent attack up next? Then Spurs, who away struggle for goals, Villa away and City, and then you want him back.

Any thoughts or ideas welcome and appreciated.

    Pope/McGovern
    TAA/AWB/Tomri/Lundy/Rico
    Salah/KDB/Mount/Maddison/Hayden
    Kun/Pukki/Tammy

    1FT .06 itb

Thinking maybe hold the FT, have WC also but don’t c the need to WC this lot. If anything maybe ship AWB+Pukki for Boly+Cwilson but seems slightly sideways, can obv ship salah to but held this long lol

interested to know people’s favorite Podcast/Content providers so far this season?

    My personal top 3

    1. 59th min (General)
Short, sweet straight to the point

    2. Fpl Surgery
    Great guests, great chat

    3. Lets talk Fpl
    No 1 for Youtube content

    Top 3 Slight Disappointments..
    (Hopefully some constructive criticism)

    1. Planet Fpl
Overkill, was great when it was 1
Podcast per week, hard to keep up

    2. Scoutcast
Too many guest changes, feel like its now Joe + guests

    3. Always cheating
Too many Ads, and comes across a tad condescending

I know these guys give up alot of time to do these, overall they do a great job, just a few small tweeks imo

    Whats yours?

Planet fpl (the main review) the only one i go out of my way to listen to. Like the way they, James especially, review the games. All the others I can take or leave, won't go into why as don't want to offend anyone especially as have met a few of them and they're all great guys

it's not constructive though, only got so much time and can't be bothered listening to every man and his dog's thoughts on fpl 😆

    Thoughts on
    Salah + Pukki + 4.4forward—-> Auba + Vardy + 4.4mid(-4)

    Yay or nay

Saka worth the extra in 5th mid slot IMO.

On WC, happy with my attack, but can’t decide on defence. TAA and Lundstram are locked, but otherwise flexible.

Who do people consider important in defence going forward?

Also tempted to just have Gazzaniga in goal, rather than a Gaza/Pope rotation, now I’ve made my 0.1m from his holiness. Is that crazy?

Solid at the back: Sheffield, Burnley, Leicester, Chelsea, MCity, Palace, Villa, MUtd but MUtd is priced too high IMO. Chelsea has less CS but more attacking returns potential.

Pope+McGovern gives you extra funds elsewhere.

Soyuncu/Pereira, Tomori/Azpilicueta/Alonso, Rico/Kelly, Otamendi if you still believe in MCity def.

What do you think about Charlie Taylor at Burnley? Dropped to 4.2m I believe, and Pieters injured?

Not sure, think Taylor would have been first choice at the start of the season, but he was injured, and the form of Pieters kept him out of the team. Not sure how long Pieters is out for though?
It’s Taylor or Rico on WC, either would be a bench player anyway, not sure Rico is that secure either really

I have Pope "set and forget" and not considering double up so have not followed their defense player situation over the IB. If you go with another keeper, yeah I would recommend picking up a Burnley defender.

I had pope set and forget at the start too, but Gazzaniga at 4.4m seems very good value

I got Pope at 4.5 so saving 0.1-0.2 to get a temporary keeper with less expected saves per game (since Tottenham has more possession than Burnley) hardly feels worth it without WC, and I spent my WC on GW2.

I also had Pope at the start. But I am on my WC, which is why Gazza tempts me at 4.4
I know Spurs aren’t great, but still 4.4 for a nailed keeper from a top six team is pretty good
