Captain Poll

FPL managers set for more tough captaincy choices in Gameweek 9

After weeks of captaincy frustration, Fantasy Premier League managers are set for more tough armband decisions ahead of Gameweek 9.

Manchester City and Liverpool both have relatively challenging away matches next weekend, which could deter us from the usual suspects.

Pep Guardiola’s defending champions travel to Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four matches this season.

That strike came in the dying embers of a 1-1 draw with Wolves in Gameweek 6, courtesy of Diogo Jota (£6.1m).

Outside of that, the Eagles have kept clean sheets Everton, Aston Villa and Norwich in front of their own fans.

Manchester City assets underwhelmed in their 2-0 defeat to Wolves

Naturally, Manchester City do usually pose a greater threat, with owners of Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin de Bruyne (£10.0m) all hoping for both starts and returns this weekend.

But the Citizens’ recent poor performance against Wolves in Gameweek 8 might go some way to putting Fantasy managers off for the captaincy, especially considering Palace’s home defensive record.

Meanwhile, Liverpool travel to Old Trafford, a ground at which they have never won in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

In all competitions, the former Borussia Dortmund manager has drawn three and lost one at Manchester United’s historic stadium during his time in charge of the Reds.

In total, his side has scored three goals there but on their most recent visit, back in February, the match ended 0-0.

Fantasy managers are likely to steer clear of Liverpool attackers for the captaincy in Gameweek 9

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have been far from special going forward this season, their defence has shown some improvement on last season.

They have two Premier League clean sheets at Old Trafford in 2019/20, against Chelsea and Leicester and have been boasting some relatively impressive defensive underlying statistics.

All of this is likely to leave nagging questions at the back of the mind for Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) owners when it comes to the armband.

Given Manchester United’s shocking attacking displays of late, perhaps Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) might receive more consideration than their midfield colleagues?

Aubameyang and Arsenal are likely to find life tough at Sheffield United next Monday

Even those looking at Arsenal assets such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) may have their concerns about a Monday night trip to Sheffield United.

The Blades have conceded just seven goals this season, only Liverpool have allowed fewer, while Chris Wilder has made all the top-six sides work for their results thus far.

Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw in Gameweek 4, while the only reason Klopp’s men scored at Bramall Lane in Gameweek 7 was because of an uncharacteristic error from Dean Henderson (£4.5m).

For all of those reasons, Gameweek 9 could be see a host of differential options top the upcoming captain poll, which you can now vote in (below).

Wilson will be the favourite Bournemouth option ahead of Norwich’s trip to the Vitality Stadium

Naturally, there will be a lot of consideration for Bournemouth assets in Gameweek 9 as they host a Norwich side that conceded five at home to Aston Villa last time out.

Callum Wilson (£7.9m) is expected to be the favourite of these having registered attacking returns in all but one match so far this season.

Those unable to get the England international into their squads may also look to Josh King (£6.3m), who has double-figure hauls in both of his last two matches at the Vitality Stadium – and remains the Cherries’ penalty taker.

Abraham has been in decent statistical form of late

One of just two of Gameweek 8’s top 20 captains to actually deliver attacking returns was Tammy Abraham (£7.7m), who, with each passing week, looks more and more capable of factoring in the conversation for the armband.

After the first eight matches of the 2019/20 campaign, the Chelsea forward is joint-top of the league for goals scored, alongside Aguero (eight).

Abraham is also top of the league for shots on target, which is probably why his bonus score is also looking quite healthy, a total of 11 to his name thus far – more than any other player.

Ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Stamford Bridge, it would be surprising to see Abraham not considered among the best options, especially given the Magpies’ record on the road this season.

In four away matches in 2019/20, Steve Bruce’s men have conceded 11 times, an average of 2.75 per game.

You can now vote in the latest captain poll on our website, either below or in the sidebar on the right.

Joe and David will be speaking about the debate in the captain video, which you can watch on our YouTube channel from 12:30 pm on Monday.

    Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle
    Tottenham 0-1 Newcastle
    Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle
    Newcastle 1-0 United

Newcastle are an uncomfortable team to captain a player against. Against the bigger sides, their bus is substantial.

Are Leicester not more of an attacking force worth parking against than Man United? They’re a side that resemble Chelsea in terms of form and dynamism. Leicester won 5-0 at home to Newcastle I don’t see why Chelsea can’t do similar to them

Only one of those sides has impressed this season though and if you captained mane in that game you'd have got 30 points. Chelsea have impressed offensively, certainly.

Just a cut price Harry Kane. He needs penalties but plays for a side that aren’t big and don’t get given free penalties so it’s tricky. He has been poor from open play for club and country for a while

    - 1 goal and 2 lucky assists in last 5 is not good enough for 12.5m player . (one where ball hit his leg and fell to firmino vs burnley plus a freekick touch to TAA)

Stats say different. I think it's that teams are crowding Salah out and that gives Mane more space. I still think Salah especially with pens will score more once teams adjust. Mane in better form now though for sure.

This is the philosophically contradictory nature of using backward looking statistics to predict forward looking FPL points

Salah’s goal conversion rate was much higher in his first season, dropped last year, and hasn’t went back up

What’s to say Mane’s conversion won’t drop the same way Salah’s did, or that Salah’s won’t go back up to where it was?

            A very philosophical issue

The facts are, that Mané has scored more points last week, and more in the last 2-3 weeks - so there is absolutely no way in hell Salah is going to have anywhere near as much positive sentiment attached to his capabilities - the recency bias is far too strong

When we have a few vice-versa games, the same will be true of Mané, and backward looking stats will be used to justify why Salah is so much better than Mané, repeat ad infinium

Over the long run, for my money, penalties & selfishness will keep Salah firmly ahead of Mané on points, as has always been the case.

But Mané is a superb player, and always has been. He has multiple premier league hattricks under his belt before he even arrived at Liverpool after all

Salah being on set peices is vastly exaggerated.

If Milner is on the pitch he is main penalty taker. Plus TAA is main corner and freekick taker for luverpool

                4 years, 6 months ago

I didn’t say set pieces though 🙂 I said penalties and selfishness... Milner is coming 34 and has started 4 of liverpool’s Last 18 league games...

Which leaves Salah as the de facto penalty taker - I wouldn’t say that role is “overrated” at all - it’s part of the reason why he finished >30 points ahead of Mané last season, despite Mané smashing it and Mo not really getting out of third gear... and despite his conversion rate deteriorating significantly from the 300 point season the prior year

The Mo vs Mané debate will likely rage on all season, and it will tick tock between them depending on who has scored most in the last game or two - as I said, personally I look at Salah as easily justifying an extra 0.7m, but who knows, maybe Mané will outscore him this year & the landscape will look differently 🙂

Isnt saying "as has always been the case" using backward looking FPL data to predict future outcomes?

Anyway, I think it's best to pick one and stick. I like owning Mane because I have enjoyed watching him play alot, and think he can turn the tables and outscore Salah this season.

              1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                • 14 Years
                4 years, 6 months ago

Of course - that’s why I referenced the philosophically contradictory nature of using backward looking statistics to predict forward looking FPL points 🙂

What we will often find is that one’s conclusion will be reached (consciously or subconsciously) PRIOR to the analysis, and statistics will be used to justify the pre-formed bias or conclusion rather than inform it

I’ve no idea how Mané & Salah will end up points wise, although my own bias is that, based on Salah’s track record, and his role in the team, that he has too many “structural” advantages over Mané to not end up ahead of him on points

Others will look at Mane’s recent conversion rate, and assume it will hold, and that Mané will come out on top - and will assume that the conversion rate deterioration Salah experienced from the 300 point season to his 250 point season won’t happen to Mané - partially because (backward looking) recency bias is one of, if not THE strongest forces to influence opinion when it comes to (forward looking) FPL predictions

It’s a fascinating battle to watch unfold between the two - but you surely won’t find too many people arguing that either of them are anything but superb players

He does look better. I'm not saying he's a bad pick. But the stats clearly favor Salah in terms of positioning, touches in the box, shots, etc. Goal conversion is one stat. But the converse way of interpreting it, is that he's overperforming against his actual conversion for a small sample size.

Or it could mean that he has improved his finishing? Not the smallest sample size, it's pretty much the whole of 2019. Mins per goal is also significantly better than Mo. I mean yeah, he could be over performing, but that's just one possibility.

If I had never heard of Salah before this season I'd feel ripped off for the returns given his value. But like Aguero he is a player that is prone to explode and have big game returns and tends to be consistent once getting form. It's also hard to sell expensive players and get them back when they hit form without taking hits/wildcard, if you spread the profits of their transfer to upgrade multiple players.

But the real questions atm are if Salah will hit form and if so when. With Sterling, Mane, De Bruyne and Aguero returning goals as well you've gotta pick your poison and hope for the best.

Soy/Pereira: 1.5m difference will not be reflected in the point spread
Cilson/Vardy: Vardy has the fixtures as far as the eye can see

Well I'm still deciding between the keepers. Spurs are not going to be th is bad all season and 4.4 for a top 4 team keeper he will only go up in price. Burnley only kept a couple of cs so pope not doing as much as we thought

Perrier is expensive, a luxury player who got 8 assists last season. He will score a lot more than Soy imo.

Wilson over next 2 by far. I'll maybe captain him next gw. Save your 2 ft and you can bring Vardy in after 🙂

I can’t settle on a defence on my WC.
    Current WC team;

    Pope/Gazzaniga
    TAA - Söyüncü - Otamendi - Lundstram - Rico
Mane - KdB - Mount - Maddison (Dendonker)
    Abraham - Vardy - Aubameyang

Not sure about Otamendi, but don’t see anyone in a similar price doing better. Tomori? Is he pretty safe now?
Charlie Taylor at 4.2 a better option than Rico?

          Brace / Haul

Dont know the stats but owning Kane for 3 seasons, he regulary scores a brace / double digits

Has been steady this season...hasnt scored a brace since GW1...its due

Watford have conceded one goal less than Norwich. Obviously the hammering they took from City will skew things a bit but Kane is not a bad shout for captain if you have him.

If he hauls you might just end up with green arrows all round.

Spurs are terrible at the moment but they still have a pretty decent squad to turn their form around.

Weighing up some options here. WC in hand still so can mix it up a bit.
    1. Salah + Pukki -> Maddison + Aubameyang (1.2m).
    2. VVD + Smith -> Pereira + Soyuncu/ Tomori (0.2m/0.1m).
    3. A. Smith + Cantwell -> Soyuncu + Dendoncker (0.0m).
    4. VVD + Pukki-> Holding (or other 4.5m) + Vardy.
    5. VVD + Pukki-> 5.6m or less def + Wilson.

    Pope.
    VVD, Otamendi, Robbo.
    Cantwell, Mount, KDB, Sterling, Salah.
    Abraham, Pukki.
    Button, Lundstram, A Smith, Wickham.

Against the grain ever so slightly, but I'm surprised to see that 4 at the back hasn't returned as a possibility with lots of cheap to mid price defenders coming into nice fixtures (e.g. Boly, Dunk. Soy) alongside the cheap gifts (Lund, Rico etc.). For example...

    Pope (McG)
    Boly Dunk TAA Soy
    Mount Mane Sterling (2x4.5mids)
    Vardy Tammy (Auba)

Or 4-4-2 with KDB and Connolly

TBF, Sheff United & Palace aren't scoring loads, Arsenal should have defenders back which will strengthen them.

Liverpool is an interesting one, as bad as United are, form usually goes out of the window in these games.

Yeah I didn't disagree, just said it's a big call. Arsenal away days we just tend to gift teams goals hahah. Hope he's right

I'm eager to get Tierney into my side - think he'll be in the side now?

Yeah I think he will start vs Sheffield. Could be a fantastic pick

Its not necessarily the case that defenders back for Arsenal strengthens them at all as they are all crap.

    Any news on Trossard lately?
Would be lovely to have him back as an option - and 5.8 too. Yum.

Showed so much promise at the beginning of the season. Fate has been cruel so far but he’s firmly on my radar.

Or just get Dunk and upgrade Yarmo to Maddison

Rumours that Tierney hasn’t settled well in London, not sure if that has/will have an impact on him getting into the first team

Found this after a quick search, not sure if there’s more to it.

Just says that he has never been to central London , nothing about not settling.

                  No worries.
I read ‘I’m living on my own for the first time and it’s not been great, I’m a home boy, and I’m having to learn to cook for the first time’
Also saying he doesn’t really leave his flat, doesn’t sound like he’s enjoying things too much.
I mean, read into it what you will, just a note on caution I guess.

      Very similar to mine.
I have Maddison and Vardy instead of Yarnmolenko and Wilson...and Gazzaniga instead of Button.

Are you happy with Otamendi going forward?
