Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

We take a look at the Fantasy Premier League defenders who are exhibiting the biggest attacking threat in our latest Members article.

Clean sheets are still proving hard to come by in 2019/20, particularly if Fantasy managers have stuck with the best-performing defences of last season.

We’re actually only three shut-outs down from the same stage last year (44 v 41) but the meanest backlines of 2018/19 haven’t fully convinced in the first two months of this campaign.

Liverpool and Manchester City had already recorded five clean sheets apiece this time 12 months ago but have kept only five between them this season.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur had seven shut-outs combined after Gameweek 8 of 2018/19; this time around, they have managed only one each.

Everton, who were keeping clean sheets for fun at the back-end of last season, are now without a shut-out to their name in six Gameweeks.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With shut-outs difficult to come by, perhaps it makes more sense than ever to look at what our defenders are offering offensively.

With that in mind, we will study our Members’ Area data to pinpoint the defenders who have demonstrated goal and assist potential in Gameweeks 1 to 8.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 8

CHO cant stop scoring. Tomori owners made a mistake.

CHO will turn out to be a great pick. Better than Mount? We’ll have to wait and see.

But a Tammy and Mount/CHO double up looks good nonetheless

Mount, Tammy and CHO would surely be too much Chelsea attack though and most reluctant to ditch the original two.

Owning the others is irrelevant to wether CHO is a good pick or not.

Ha, it's really not. There's many reasons why, one example being if that team has a tough fixture (Liverpool away say) then that's 3 of your attacking line-up with (none of which are fodder price) with slim chance of returns. I'm not necessarily saying that should rule him out, just that it's not irrelevant.

Also you say he can't stop scoring but he has never scored a league goal in 14 appearances for Chelsea (granted most from bench) and he also has a lot of competition on the flanks. So while a great player he definitely is and an exciting FPL prospect that's definitely on my watch list, a bit of context is worth while rather than the blanket statement.

So you'd bench one of those 3 in that fixture?

The fact that a hard fixture comes up isn't relevant when looking at the points across a season.

Probably not, but then I wouldn't be shocked when not many points came in and might think I wish I hadn't put all my eggs in one basket, I think 3 attacking players from one team doesn't give much team balance, an off day for that team and it's likely a poor GW.

You're right that it might be a low scoring week - but individually those players should outperform over the length of the season. One week doesn't matter.

In terms of team balance - this really should only be used in the context of too much money within defence, midfield or attack. Too many highly priced players for example may make your bench or secondary players suffer.

But those Chelsea players are all undervalued relative to their attacking returns - so I don't think you can argue that it worsens team balance. On the contrary, I believe my team will take home more points on average than other teams of the same price.

Can't have them all from the off but hopefully Ricardo gets involved in the Leicester attack and Kane will go to Kun and then Vardy/Auba around GW12.

I’m on this at the minute. I could also go Kane this GW and leave MITB for Kun, not usually a fan of that but it could pay off huge this GW with the (C)... reckon I should? Hmm

          Pope • (4.0)
          TAA • Söyüncü • Tomori/Dunk • (Lunds • Rico)

Depends if you think Kane is the best captain option this GW. I may have him and still end up capping Wilson instead. But slight chance Pep plays Jesus away at Palace.

How risky is it to get Hudson-Odi in rather than Mount from GW10?

Willian always starts on the right.
Pedro & CHO can play on either wing.
Pulisic could start on the left side.

Gut said Wilson over Abraham for C about 10 days ago.
But there is nothing that makes Abraham a bad choice (currently VC)
My fear now is Abraham having about 3.5 times the ownership and therefore is my safer option.

Newcastle will bring the bus against Chelsea. Only Liverpool have really managed to break it down so far (no bus against Leicester). And Tammy is the one they are most likely to shut down with 3 CBs

Abraham has proven he is a real threat in the box and Chelsea have managed to break open most teams so far. Could go either way this one I think. Newcastle shipped 5 goals against Leicester couple weeks back so they aren't exactly watertight...

    Mane KDB Son Mount Guendouzi
    C.Wilson Vardy Haller

Does any of these look a better option
    Aguero+Wijnaldum be better over KDB+Haller?
    Jimenez+ Ota/ Matip for Haller+Creswell?

Your defence looks very light, I would clearly look to upgrade Chambers who is threatened by Maitland-Niles and Bellerin.

KDB is a must-have (if fit) so keep him and stay clear from Wijnaldum, not much interest in getting any Pool mid whose name is neither Salah nor Mané. I know he scored a lot of goals during the IB but he plays in a more advanced role with his country.

Jimenez + Ota/Matip looks good instead of Haller + Chambers for example.

Pukki to Wilson for free? The kind of decision I have got wrong consistently now for the longest time. If I do the transfer Pukki will fire and Wilson will troll, if I don't Wilson will bag and Pukki will blank

There is an attacking defender missing at 4.4 - Targett, probably because he doesn't have enough minutes, but it looks like he's 1st choice now.

Compare his stats in the members area for 2018....

          Ryan - Button
          Robbo - VVD - Ota - Lunds - Digne
          Salah - KDB - McGinn - Cantwell - Ceballos
          Pukki - Abraham - Haller

          2.2ITB, 2FT

          A) Ceballos + Digne -> Maddison + Tomori/Soyu
          B) Haller + Digne -> Vardy + Tomori/Soyu
          C) Ceballos, Haller + Digne -> Maddison, Vardy + Tomori/Soyu

I’m thinking of A this week and then getting Vardy in the following week. Is triple Leicester too much or should I go for Tomori to balance it out? Any other thoughts?

          Would you WC?

          Heaton
          Robertson | AWB | Otamendi
          F Anderson | Salah | Sterling | Mount
          C Wilson | Pukki | Abraham

Button | Mings | Dendoncker | El Mohammedy

          I have 2 FT and 0.4 ITB

          Was think either WC or

          Salah -> Mane
F Anderson - Maddison (Depending on fitness)

          Thoughts?

With 2 FT I wouldn't WC. Just do Salah to Mane and upgrade AWB to someone better maybe? ManU won't get too many clean sheets.

Already taken -8 hits during the international break, would you WC this squad to cancel out the hits and change the squad more, or save WC for later use?

          Current squad 3-4-3:
          RYAN - Button
Trent - VAN DIJK - OTAMENDI - Tomori - Rico
Sterling - De Bruyne - Maddison - Mount - SAKA
          Abraham - VARDY - HALLER

WC squad would be 3-5-2 with a power midfield:
          POPE - Button
          Trent - SOYUNCU - LUNDSTRAM - Tomori - Rico
Sterling - De Bruyne - Maddison - Mount - MANE
          Abraham - WILSON - CONNOLLY

          Lloris injured, De Gea injured.

          Watch out Leno and Kepa

Big Clubs with Argentine back up keepers are finding their European goalkeepers are falling like flies with injuries.
