Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

We take a look at the Fantasy Premier League defenders who are exhibiting the biggest attacking threat in our latest Members article.

Clean sheets are still proving hard to come by in 2019/20, particularly if Fantasy managers have stuck with the best-performing defences of last season.

We’re actually only three shut-outs down from the same stage last year (44 v 41) but the meanest backlines of 2018/19 haven’t fully convinced in the first two months of this campaign.

Liverpool and Manchester City had already recorded five clean sheets apiece this time 12 months ago but have kept only five between them this season.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur had seven shut-outs combined after Gameweek 8 of 2018/19; this time around, they have managed only one each.

Everton, who were keeping clean sheets for fun at the back-end of last season, are now without a shut-out to their name in six Gameweeks.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With shut-outs difficult to come by, perhaps it makes more sense than ever to look at what our defenders are offering offensively.

With that in mind, we will study our Members’ Area data to pinpoint the defenders who have demonstrated goal and assist potential in Gameweeks 1 to 8.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 8

It must be good. Even your defenders are getting talked about when they can't keep a clean sheet. It is the stuff "bandwagons" are made of.

I enjoyed the read for this article and it must be hard to keep interest with a 2 week gap between games.
May I make 1 slight criticism though.
All these X factors (I presume to be "expected") are purely a pain for me. yet another nondescript piece of information I can do without. Nobody knows the future and you have to be brain dead if a player has 20 shots on target without scoring, he is a likely candidate for an eventual goal. Does one really need some type of algorithm to explain this?
I could be completely out of order with my statement so I would love to know from the community their feelings about this.
If I listen to a blog on FPL I switch it off if they overload the information with XG and XGC etc etc.
Right guys and girls "ATTACK ME"!

I agree. For me, the Liverpool fullback double-up is a no-brainer this season. The eye test tells me that alone. Digne was great last back-end, but it's clear that Gueye leaving has upset the defensive balance. There's an argument that Lundstram should be a third starter alongside especially at 4.0m. Job done.

xG is more nuanced than just pure shots. It accounts for the quality of the chance based on relative position to the goal and angle. It has value in terms of understanding players that are taking up high potential positions as well. That's what makes it more valuable to me than raw goal attempts.

I'm in the ridiculous position of having two FT's , wildcard, and not much to do. I can do some housekeeping to bring a bit of money in, or else I'm wasting an FT. My obvious move is Kane>Vardy and invest in mid, but this is not the week to do it with Watford up next..

a.Cantwell>Dendoncker, frees up 0.4m, commits me to playing Grealish every week though, unless I rotate with Lundstram. Gone off double NOR, and would quite like to bag my 0.2 profit.

b.James>CHO for double-up v Newcastle? Originally Grealish was my CHO placeholder, but he's in form now.

    Ryan
    TAA Ota Robbo
    Salah KdB James Grealish
    Kane Abraham(c) Pukki

    Button CANTWELL Lundstram Kelly

Nice position to be in. Rank?
James, Grealish and Pukki could be talked about.
Cantwell Lund and Kelly are good backups.
I am personally tired of Pukki and would probably change him.
I don't understand moving Cantwell; he has gone up in price for a reason and has been playing with an injury. Maybe he and others in Norwich can recover over the break. Grealish looks good but flatters to deceive and I prefer Mcginn.
Although a good side, having a double up on Pool defenders takes cash away from you. Just think if you freed up 2.5 mil in defense what you could do with it. Especially the Grealish Pukki story.

39k at present. Seemed to hit the right players early this year, KdB, Lunds etc.

Cheers for the thoughts. Giving Pukki a bit of time. I could do a switch to Vardy and Wilson up front for example..

Think I might do James>CHO this week, bank 0.2mm and reassess. I've had CHO in mind all season so would be a shame not to have him if he does well this week.

39k is great with those chips you have. I think the fixture swings are critical and only Pool and Citeh you can sit tight with. Leicester Chelsea Bournemouth can take up 6 places moving forward.

Beyond just the yellow flag, he has 3 of the top 6 in the next 4. Last year, Salah had 2 goals and 2 assists in 10 games vs top 6 opposition and 2 of those attacking returns were against ARS.

Just move him out for 4 weeks and come back after.

Son back early, one of the few playing ok for Spurs. "Easy" fixture too.
Maddi 11th on Mids points table. 34 points in 620 minutes. Son 35 points in 480 minutes. Maddi fixture not as good as Spurs fixture IMO. Freeing up money is the only reason to tfr IMHO.

      That's my entire bench.

I have Rico, Cantwell, Lundstram in that order.

Any of them could haul though. But I guess that's a nice problem and a bit of a luxury

Any advice on this WC gents?

    Pope
    Söyüncü, Dunk, Lundstrum
    Salah, Mane, KDB, Mount
    Vardy, Wilson, Abraham

    Steklenberg, Rico, Diop, 4.5 mid

Putting my money in attack, rotating five 4.5 defenders.
Should I downgrade Mane and invest in TAA/Pereria/Boly etc? Or stick with the firepower

Thanks for the advice, which defenders do you suggest? Apart from TAA there’s no one who catches my eye

Duffy playing for Ireland last night? Has he been out injured or just out of favour?

Hmm, thanks. Wonder if he’ll get back in. Looked dangerous as always last night and I still have my triple captain 😆

Got 2FTs. Thinking Kane -> Auba and giving Pukki one more week.

    Thoughts?

    Pope (Heaton)
    Digne / Lund / VVD (Aurier/Cathcart)
Salah / Cantwell / Yarmolenko / Mount (KDB)
    Kane / Haller / Pukki

Can you get KdB in without losing Mahrez?

Ditch Salah if you still have him for KdB

    2. Pukki Blinders

I'd wait a week and do it for free

Dont have Salah, have Mane & Sterling

Might do Pukki to Jimenez this week, leaves funds for Mahrez to KDB nxt week if needed

Do we think Tomori loses his place to either Zouma or Christensen when Rudiger comes back form injury? Soyuncu much safer but fixtures aren't too great for CSs for Leicester....

I'm not a Chelsea fan, but he's been there best central defender so far this season. I think it's his place to lose.

      You're kidding right...

Leicester fixtures are great for CSs.

Burnley and Southampton are really unimaginative, Palace are a Hodgson dour side and Brighton aren't exactly world beaters. Only Arsenal in their next 4 are problems really. Leicester are also putting up strong defensive numbers.

      Get both Tomori and Soyuncu

A lot of away games though for Leicester, I just don't see them keeping too many CSs away
