Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 9?

Fantasy Premier League managers are going to have to look outside the usual suspects to find the best captain for Gameweek 9.

With both Manchester City and Liverpool facing relatively tough fixtures, this week’s debate largely centres around some less-discussed faces.

As ever, we’ve got the results of our latest poll and will also bring you analysis of the underlying numbers posted by players and opposition defenders alike.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) comes into Gameweek 9 as the most popular captaincy option.

At the time of writing, the Chelsea forward had amassed the support of 32.2% as Newcastle prepare to visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies have conceded at least three times in all but one of their away matches this season, losing 5-0 on their most recent Premier League road trip at Leicester.

Meanwhile, Abraham currently sits joint-top of the Golden Boot race having scored eight times this season.

Callum Wilson is a popular option in the Gameweek 9 captaincy debate

However, those that are put off by the fact that 25% of Abraham’s league goals have come in front of his own supporters in 2019/20, might be looking at Callum Wilson (£7.9m).

The Bournemouth forward is currently on course for a runners-up medal in the latest captain poll, with 16.3% of you backing the £7.9m man.

His Gameweek 9 opponents Norwich have conceded 21 goals in their first eight matches back in the top flight, the highest of any side.

Meanwhile, Wilson himself has registered attacking returns in all but one Premier League outing of 2019/20.

At the Vitality Stadium, he has three goals and two assists in four appearances, making more attacking returns against a still injury-trouble Norwich outfit very likely indeed.

Manchester City’s assets are not well-backed for their trip to Crystal Palace

As already mentioned, the captain poll has been somewhat turned on its head for Gameweek 9.

While mid-price options dominate the top end of the scale, it’s the premium assets who are bringing up the rear as a result of their tricky fixtures.

Manchester City must travel to Selhurst Park this weekend, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four league matches there this season.

For that reason, just 6.3% of you believe that Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) is the best captain for Gameweek 9.

He was one of England’s star performers against Bulgaria on Monday night but does only have one league goal in his last five Premier League outings.

That is probably enough reason for only a select few managers to consider him for the captaincy this week.

Aubameyang and his Arsenal colleagues are set to face a stubborn Sheffield United side on Monday night

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is facing a similar dilemma to Sterling, in that his Gameweek 9 fixture does look quite difficult.

Sheffield United have made both Chelsea and Liverpool work hard for results against them this season and have conceded one goal or fewer in three of their four at Bramall Lane in 2019/20.

Compared to Newcastle and Norwich’s defence, the Blades does seem more likely to frustrate a captain, even if Aubameyang has registered attacking returns in all but one match this season.

The case for Harry Kane (£10.9m) is perhaps the reverse of those at Manchester City or Arsenal.

The Tottenham forward has an incredibly favourable fixture, against a Watford side bottom of the league, winless and 20 goals conceded so far.

However, Kane and his colleagues have gone through a difficult period of form, losing 7-2 to Bayern Munich and then 3-0 at Brighton.

That said, the international break may help Mauricio Pochettino’s cause, while Kane himself has three goals and one assist in his last five Premier League matches.

He is currently backed by the same number of voters who are considering Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) for the captaincy.

Reportedly unhurt following a traffic collision this week, there probably remains some concerns about his strength of start.

Furthermore, the Argentinian’s accuracy has left a lot to be desired in recent matches, but he still has attacking returns in every round apart from Gameweek 8 in 2019/20.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) has the support of 4% ahead of a potentially tricky meeting with Burnley although he has goals in every match against sides who finished outside the top seven last season thus far.

Liverpool attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané face a trip to Old Trafford this weekend

3.6% of you are waiting on an update from Guardiola on Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.0m) fitness ahead of that visit to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder remains yellow-flagged in FPL and his presence, or lack of it, could prove an important factor in Manchester City’s next result.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) are shockingly low in this week’s poll, on 1.9% and 2.1% respectively.

The Egyptian is without a goal since Gameweek 5, while Mané has no attacking returns away from home since Gameweek 4.

Manchester United, although in poor offensive form, might prove a challenge to Liverpool defensively considering the recent numbers they have been posting, as discussed on the Scoutcast.

Furthermore, the last time Jurgen Klopp took his side to Old Trafford in the Premier League, it ended as a 0-0 draw.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Teemu Pukki (£7.1m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

Lucas Moura to score big this GW. Likely to start with Eriksen and Son having had extensive international breaks.

I was all set to have Kane on WC then move to Kun following gw. However since loosing to city they have only conceded 11 shots in the box last two GWs which is 2nd best behind Arsenal. I know it was Wolves and Sheff Utd but are they becoming harder to break down or is this expected after a thrashing?

Hmmm - didn't really look at the stats after the 8-0. I think if Eriksen is benched/out Kane will drop deep and make him less appealing as an option.

Step up Maupay (avl) and CHO (NEW), both differentials I feel will be great in the short term. CHO has 2 assists in 2 appearances and came through the u21 with two excellent goals and nealry a full 90. At 5.9 he could be a steal.

Connolly is getting the pundits but Maupay is nailed and looks great on the eye test, Villa, Everton and Norwich in the next 3 and 0.6% owned. Everyone is scrambling for funds to upgrade Pukki but is the answer to downgrade and use the money elsewhere?

      Willian and Diego Jota.

Lots of talk around Mount and CHO in the Chelsea midfield but Willian really passes the eye test for me, he drifted passed players in GW8 and was the creative force which resulted in 3 bonus points. Abraham is the outright goalscorer but against a deep Newcastle defence, the midfield might profit more from cutbacks.

Diego Jota is back from injury and has a good chance of starting, if he does start he could get in on the action as wolves take apart a poor away side in Southampton. Predicting 3-0 (same score at BUR Vs Sou) and at 1mil cheaper than Jimenez he could out perform last season's Mr Value.

How’s it looking? 0.9 ITB. Main concern - dropping Sterling/Salah to KDB Mane.

    Pope // McGovern
TAA Soyuncu Dunk // Lundstram Rico
Mane KDB Mount Maddison // Dendoncker
    Auba Abraham Wilson

Auba easy downgrade to Vardy/someone if needed. Wilson’s length of stay depends on the next 2 largely.

I can’t understand how people are going without both Salah and Sterling. Yet again they will finish 1 and 2 at end of season. The stats back it up and they have a proven pedigree that is second to none

Isn't Fantasy football also about owning the right player at the right time? Salah seems to be searching for his best form so right now Mane might be the better solution on the short term?

If they are going without both it is better for us who have them. However, they are a transfer away from back in the side. I have a personal bias towards mane atm. I have Sterling but not for long if he continues to blank.

I don't have either right now but that doesn't mean I won't have one or both at a later stage. I switched Salah to Mane in GW3 to facilitate getting in KDB, since when Mane has outscored Salah (by a whopping 3 points). Got rid of Sterling this week but only because I needed some funds to upgrade Pukki, and of the players in my team I could ditch to get the money I considered he was currently the least value for money. Doesn't mean that I don't like these players, and I am looking at a Mane/Salah double up in the next few weeks.

TWO (yes two!) free transfers, but I can't see a change to make.

          Heaton - Stek

TAA - Toby Ald - Otamendi (Lowton - Lundstrom)

          Mount - Mane - McGinn - Sterling - Cantwell

          Kun - Abraham (Greenwood)

You sure? I see some poor picks like Stek, Toby, Lowton and Greeny.

Try Connolly, Ryan, Rico or even Gazza for a start

Greeny is bench fodder at 4.4, Toby home to Watford so going next week, Stek fodder.

              Suppose Lowton could go.

Wolves are back, or are they?!

They has a great performance against city for sure, no doubting that - city however were pushing and left themselves completely exposed through their now shoddy defence!

They beat Watford comfortably- but they who wouldn’t. Watford are in free fall and unless something changes I can see them being the whipping boys for any side!

Wolves other win comes in a cup competition which as anyone knows doesn’t necessarily have an impact on league performance!

I’d like to see more evidence myself before jumping on the wolves players!

Fingers are itchy to do Ayew to Jimmy.

But then I look at their fixtures and it's frustrating. Games like AVL at home in GW12 is the one that you'd expect them to go big, but it'll come after a Europa game so expect heavy rotation here and there.

Many will say that he will start. I think he is on the bench at the start and gets 20 or 30 mins.

Thinking of futures moves if Ota doesn't keep a clean sheet against palace:

          A) Otam > Pereira - £0 ITB
          B) Ota & Cantwell > Soy & CHO - £0.3 ITB
          C) Ota & Cantwell > Boly & CHO - £0 ITB
          D) Ota > Boly - £1.3 ITB
          E) Save for next 3 fixtures as only change will be Lund in for Rico GW 11.

          Rest of team:

          Pope,
          TAA, Tomori, Ota, Rico
          Salah, Maddison, Sterling, KDB
          Wilson, Tammy

          Button, Cantwell, Lund, Connolly

Make a plan that enables you to turn him into robertson by GW13

Easiest way to do that would be

Salah, Ota > Mane & Robertson - I quite like that option tbh

            OR

            F) Dont join CHO bandwagon and monitor Tierney - Ota > Tierney

Which looks better to fit this team? A is what I have rn with 0.9 ITB. Fairly flexible, can move out Auba if necessary for funds etc...

          A) KDB Maddison Auba // Dendoncker - 0.9 ITB - 343
          B) KDB Sterling Yarmolenko // Connolly - 1.0 ITB - 352 (no Leicester attack*)
          C) Sterling Auba Yarmolenko // Dendoncker - 0.1 ITB - 343 (No LEI attack)
          D) other

          Standard WC defence

          Mane ___ Mount ___ Dendoncker
          ___ Abraham Wilson

Cheers both - still prefer it over the one I added as first comment (KDB Sterling Jimenez with no Leicester attack or Auba)? Straight cash for it

Assuming that you have Tomori which rules out CHO ?
If you've wildcarded then I would definitely consider CHO for Yarmo and upgrade Tomori to Boly with the spare cash.
Option B for me with the CHO ammendment if possible.

I do not, in fact, have Tomori - so maybe not the exact standard WC defence in that respect.

And do you prefer that still to the Sterling KDB Jimenez option?

It's certainly very close but I do like CHO.
                Most favoured option would be

                Mane , Sterling , KDB , Mount , CHO
Wilson or Jimenez , Abraham .

Jimenez gives you additional defensive funds.

I am aiming for in a couple of weeks the attack with Jimenez ( i can just afford it ) and a defence of

TAA , Robertson, Boly , Soy , Lundstram
