Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 9?

Fantasy Premier League managers are going to have to look outside the usual suspects to find the best captain for Gameweek 9.

With both Manchester City and Liverpool facing relatively tough fixtures, this week’s debate largely centres around some less-discussed faces.

As ever, we’ve got the results of our latest poll and will also bring you analysis of the underlying numbers posted by players and opposition defenders alike.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) comes into Gameweek 9 as the most popular captaincy option.

At the time of writing, the Chelsea forward had amassed the support of 32.2% as Newcastle prepare to visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies have conceded at least three times in all but one of their away matches this season, losing 5-0 on their most recent Premier League road trip at Leicester.

Meanwhile, Abraham currently sits joint-top of the Golden Boot race having scored eight times this season.

Callum Wilson is a popular option in the Gameweek 9 captaincy debate

However, those that are put off by the fact that 25% of Abraham’s league goals have come in front of his own supporters in 2019/20, might be looking at Callum Wilson (£7.9m).

The Bournemouth forward is currently on course for a runners-up medal in the latest captain poll, with 16.3% of you backing the £7.9m man.

His Gameweek 9 opponents Norwich have conceded 21 goals in their first eight matches back in the top flight, the highest of any side.

Meanwhile, Wilson himself has registered attacking returns in all but one Premier League outing of 2019/20.

At the Vitality Stadium, he has three goals and two assists in four appearances, making more attacking returns against a still injury-trouble Norwich outfit very likely indeed.

Manchester City’s assets are not well-backed for their trip to Crystal Palace

As already mentioned, the captain poll has been somewhat turned on its head for Gameweek 9.

While mid-price options dominate the top end of the scale, it’s the premium assets who are bringing up the rear as a result of their tricky fixtures.

Manchester City must travel to Selhurst Park this weekend, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four league matches there this season.

For that reason, just 6.3% of you believe that Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) is the best captain for Gameweek 9.

He was one of England’s star performers against Bulgaria on Monday night but does only have one league goal in his last five Premier League outings.

That is probably enough reason for only a select few managers to consider him for the captaincy this week.

Aubameyang and his Arsenal colleagues are set to face a stubborn Sheffield United side on Monday night

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is facing a similar dilemma to Sterling, in that his Gameweek 9 fixture does look quite difficult.

Sheffield United have made both Chelsea and Liverpool work hard for results against them this season and have conceded one goal or fewer in three of their four at Bramall Lane in 2019/20.

Compared to Newcastle and Norwich’s defence, the Blades does seem more likely to frustrate a captain, even if Aubameyang has registered attacking returns in all but one match this season.

The case for Harry Kane (£10.9m) is perhaps the reverse of those at Manchester City or Arsenal.

The Tottenham forward has an incredibly favourable fixture, against a Watford side bottom of the league, winless and 20 goals conceded so far.

However, Kane and his colleagues have gone through a difficult period of form, losing 7-2 to Bayern Munich and then 3-0 at Brighton.

That said, the international break may help Mauricio Pochettino’s cause, while Kane himself has three goals and one assist in his last five Premier League matches.

He is currently backed by the same number of voters who are considering Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) for the captaincy.

Reportedly unhurt following a traffic collision this week, there probably remains some concerns about his strength of start.

Furthermore, the Argentinian’s accuracy has left a lot to be desired in recent matches, but he still has attacking returns in every round apart from Gameweek 8 in 2019/20.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) has the support of 4% ahead of a potentially tricky meeting with Burnley although he has goals in every match against sides who finished outside the top seven last season thus far.

Liverpool attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané face a trip to Old Trafford this weekend

3.6% of you are waiting on an update from Guardiola on Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.0m) fitness ahead of that visit to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder remains yellow-flagged in FPL and his presence, or lack of it, could prove an important factor in Manchester City’s next result.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) are shockingly low in this week’s poll, on 1.9% and 2.1% respectively.

The Egyptian is without a goal since Gameweek 5, while Mané has no attacking returns away from home since Gameweek 4.

Manchester United, although in poor offensive form, might prove a challenge to Liverpool defensively considering the recent numbers they have been posting, as discussed on the Scoutcast.

Furthermore, the last time Jurgen Klopp took his side to Old Trafford in the Premier League, it ended as a 0-0 draw.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Teemu Pukki (£7.1m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Not easy for Salah to drop. If he does drop then does not bother me as I am keeping. If he hauls he will most likely rise.

If Robbo goes on a hauling spree, which he could then 7.0 and up again.

LFC defence has Alisson back 🙂

So many forwards are looking good atm, and with a lot of teams having easier fixtures, it’s hard to choose only 3.

Which forward do you rate the highest for the next 3-4 weeks?

My top 3 list right now:

    1. Aguero, best forward in the league for the best attacking team, rested in IB, underperforming in stats (due a haul), next 3 matches are as good as they get. Rotation risk.

    2. Abraham, focal point, shoots a lot, in an attacking and free flowing unit, CHO back could provide him even more assist, great fixtures. Could get hooked of early for CL matches.

    3. Auba, great fixtures, on penalty and fk’s, clinical, in an attacking top team. Minus is that Lacazette is injury free, and Aubs could then be shifted back as a winger.

Do you reckoning others instead for your top 3 list? Who and why?
    Interested in your thouhts.

He will be the one I will fear the most for not having the upcoming weeks. But still think that bournemouth team is too incosistent, and a bit hit and miss. Will be thrilling to see the outcome of the Wilson-Pukki duel.

Vardy and Wilson. But note sure either of them are above the 3 you mention. For me it is Tammy-Wilson and one of Kun or Auba on WC. Both I’d too expensive

I’ve got that Tammy Wilson Auba frontline.

Wavering on whether is worth keeping - I can do Auba KDB Maddison (0.9 ITB), or Sterling KDB Jimenez(0.0 ITB). Mane is my other premium

Not too many in the current draft with Auba if I’m honest. Wilson at 13%? Dunk and Soyuncu CS? Maddison or Yarmolenko, whoever I pick?

Or I go Sterling Jimenez over Auba Maddison. I’ve got KDB, Mane

It's so massively bunched up you're only 50 points away from 100k - play it reasonably safe with a couple of solid differentials and you should start moving up. Would try and have one attacking differential.

Auba. Cheaper, nailed, will probably deliver about the same amount of points throughout the season. With Laca back, he’d probably be a winger again, but that doesn’t have to be bad. He like cutting inside with his mean curl.

Though, would really want Kun for the next three gw tbh.

Rank in your order or priority on WC. My rank is 1.3m, team further up page:

      A) Auba - nailed, pens, FK, easy to downgrade, consistent - fix. maybe tough
      B) Mane - up against way out of form teams, decent form, to have a Pool mid
      C) Leicester attack - Maddison easiest for me to get in
      D) Sterling double w KDB - can be explosive, but crap league form, rotation, means no Pool attack

      Some of my thoughts x

      An interesting stat this.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, by two, earned more points in his first 29 Premier League games as Manchester United manager than Jurgen Klopp did at Liverpool.

Solskjaer's 14 wins and seven draws just edges 13 wins and eight draws.

      Makes you think.

Check what teams they inherited. Stats without context are pointless.

Agreed, though I don't think if we compared the squads there'd be much tangible difference in how good they were. The difference however is Klopp had a style and vision and you could see what he was trying to achieve and was worth backing, Ole just looks clueless. Also Klopp was achieving at Dortmund

              Klopp's first game:

Mignolet, Clyne Skrtel Sakho Moreno, Lucas Can Milner, Lallana Coutinho Origi

Bogdan, Toure, Randall, Allen, Teixeira, Ibe, Sinclair.

              Solskjaer's first game:

de Gea, Young Lindelof Jones Shaw, Herrara Matic Pogba, Lingard Rashford Martial

Romero, Bailly, Dalot, Pereira, Fred, Fellaini, Mata.

I don't see a chasm in quality tbh, utd maybe have the names but most had faded. De gea not at the level he was, matic dead. Squad utd a bit better. My point is the vision style of play is more important

Just indicates what a supreme job Klopp has done in transforming both the team and the club. On paper the individual parts inherited by OGS are suprior players generally ( Coutinho being the obvious exception) and have badly underperformed under his tenure. They are still not actually that good though - 6th at very best.

Thing is, Liverpool improved and finished strongly in Klopp's first season, you could see his methods were starting to improve the team.

Under Ole, United are getting worse, they look clueless going forward and I'm not sure he knows how to solve it.

If you took the first 10 games it would be an even more startling stat.

After 40 games (assuming Ole gets that far) it won't be in the least bit interesting.

Done this yesterday and I'm starting to think it was a bid mad. What do you think?

Pukki & Haller > Vardy & Connolly + 0.8 ITB to upgrade elsewhere (e.g. defense or Cantwell)

          Now I'm on this:

          Ryan
          VanDijk Soyuncu Lundstram
          Salah Sterling DeBruyne Maddison Cantwell
          Vardy Abraham

          B: Pope Connolly Rico Cathcart

Yeah it's 3 Leicester but I think they're boss this season and their fixtures couldn't be better. Easy switch from Maddison/Vardy to Mount/Wilson/etc. if they don't deliver too

I understand. Temporary changes are crucial in this game and timing really is everything. It's not like you can't get a player back in the future if you feel like you have to. Admiting mistakes is completely normal. Well, every single one of us is trying to justify his/her picks and decisions. But who's right? We'll find out later. Even if you check all the stats in the world, listen to 10 podcasts per week, read 20 articles, watch a few games and MOTD, get replies on FFS by 100 different users - it still doesn't mean you'll do well in FPL. And that's fine, because you have no influence on course of events and happenstance - like they don't. I still find it interesting how we have the power to convince others that you are/were right (maybe just lucky) in a particular situation and eventually they follow your advice. Sometimes one quote is enough, sometimes one page essay. Nobody knows what's gonna happen so just play your own game.

For sure. But stats and watching games are the most powerful metrics we have to do well. Why do some managers have vastly better track records than others? They gather all the information and use it to assimilate the best squad for blocks of 4-6 GW’s. Smart captain decisions and patience with the proven beasts of the FPL game are hallmarks to success.

Dunk good option. Although if playing 3 at back can you not use that money elsewhere? Eg get kelly. Lund and rico alternate quite well as your 3rd starting defender (that’s what I’m doing anyway on wc)
