The FPL Gameweek 9 team news and injury updates

Having brought you up to speed on the ten pre-Gameweek 9 press conferences to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, we now turn our attention to the remaining Premier League manager pressers.

There were a number of well-owned Fantasy assets who we were seeking clarification on, one of whom was Kevin De Bruyne (groin).

Asked about the Belgian, John Stones (thigh) and Benjamin Mendy (hamstring), Pep Guardiola said:

Yeah, some of them are better. Kevin is back and John trained the last two days good. Mendy as well. Mendy a little bit later, but as well.

FPL bosses hoping for clear-cut information on Alisson (calf), Mohamed Salah (ankle) and Joel Matip (knock) were left disappointed by Jurgen Klopp’s press conference, meanwhile, with the Liverpool boss saying of the Reds’ injury situation:

Better – how good, we have to see, that’s the truth. There are two more sessions to come from this afternoon and we have to see. Then we’ll make decisions, that’s how it is. Nothing is fixed.

The players from international duty all came back healthy which is very, very important, so we have now three or four days with the full squad to prepare.

Matip had declared himself fit a day earlier, while a scan on Salah has at least shown no lasting damage.

Frank Lampard has been left counting the cost of the international break, with N’Golo Kante (groin), Andreas Christensen (hamstring) and Mateo Kovacic (thigh) having picked up injuries – although the Croatian midfielder looks set to recover.

The Chelsea boss said:

N’Golo is not fit. He had a small groin issue [with France] and we didn’t get him back until after the second game.

Kovacic had a knock on his thigh but has trained the last couple of days so is in contention. Ross [Barkley] is fine.

Andreas Christensen has got a hamstring injury which will see him out probably for the next two weeks. Rudiger is training outside with the physios. A bit of work to be done for him for match-fitness but really positive for us that he’s back outside.

There were no updates on Reece James (ankle) and Emerson Palmieri (hamstring) in the broadcast section of Frank Lampard’s press conference on Friday but both players have been involved in training this week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s injury list in early-October was almost as bad as Daniel Farke’s at Norwich and David de Gea (groin) is the latest casualty, having hobbled off while playing for Spain.

Solskjaer said on Friday:

I don’t expect him to play but it wasn’t as bad as feared. When I saw the game I thought, ‘that’s him out until the next international break’. But it’s not as bad as feared.

Much like Klopp, the United boss was frustratingly ambiguous about the wider fitness picture, saying:

Of course, I would like to tell you positive news, we’ll see on Sunday who’s come through the last two sessions. There are players who have just started training, just on the verge of coming back.

His quotes from an interview with Sky Sports on Wednesday may give owners of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (tonsillitis) and Anthony Martial (thigh) some hope, at least, although Paul Pogba (ankle) is definitely sidelined.

While United’s injury situation remains unclear, Norwich’s is looking much rosier.

Farke revealed on Friday that Tim Krul, Kenny McLean, Todd Cantwell, Max Aarons, Sam Byram, Alex Tettey, Tom Trybull, Jamal Lewis and Onel Hernandez are all fit after their respective issues, with Mario Vrancic back in training and working on his fitness too.

Grant Hanley will be out for seven to eight weeks after groin surgery, however.

Farke’s opposite number this weekend, Eddie Howe, may have Adam Smith (hamstring) back after a hamstring problem.

The Bournemouth boss said:

He’s trained. We’ve had to take our time with his hamstring injury, it wasn’t an absolute clear low-grade strain. We’ve had to be careful with him. He’s close.

Dan Gosling (hip), Junior Stanislas (knee) and David Brooks (ankle) remain out, while Howe was annoyingly vague about a few other fitness issues that the Cherries have.

Howe said:

I think we’ve seen everybody now, there’s a couple of slight concerns. You’re always slightly fearful how they’re going to come back but we can be relatively pleased.

Nuno Espirito Santo was similarly non-committal about whether a cluster of his injured or ill players would return this weekend, saying:

We had some issues. Players that came from their national team, Leander [Dendoncker] struggling with some problems, Romain [Saiss], Diogo [Jota], Pedro [Neto], Jordao, we have some problems that we had to manage.”

We’ll give them space and time to recover well so they can help the team. Some of them will be inside of the game, the others not. We’ll have to wait and see.

Mamadou Sakho (muscle) and Connor Wickham (match fitness) will again miss out for Crystal Palace this weekend, while Roy Hodgson said on Friday that a couple of other unnamed players will be assessed ahead of the visit of Manchester City – although did say that he expects those in question to recover.

Steve Bruce confirmed that Matt Ritchie (ankle) and Florian Lejeune (knee) are his only two injury-related absentees for the trip to Chelsea.

Finally, Marco Silva brought us news of Everton’s injury latest.

The Toffees’ head coach said:

Fabian [Delph] is still in doubt. We have 24 hours until the game and still in doubt, let’s see how he will react. He did not a full session with the team but he’s getting better.

Like you know, JP [Gbamin] will be out long-term. Cenk Tosun as well, he came from the national team with a small issue in the muscle in his groin. Nothing special, not too long, but will be out of tomorrow’s match.

How’s this WC looking? No Pool attack, but I’ll probably do Sterling > Salah/Mane once Pool fixtures turn.
Have almost 2mil left ITB which I may well keep for a rainy day.

    ..........Ryan - Button
    TAA - Soy - Ota - Rico - Lundy
    Sterling - KDB - Mount - Maddy - Saka
    Vardy - Wilson - Tammy
    1.8mil left

Could do Saka, Sterling & Vardy > Donk, Mane & Auba as well.

With Kante, Christensen, Emerson and Rudiger all still out, and with doubts about Kovacic - can we really trust the ‘data’ saying Chelsea defence is on the up?

Tomori, Mount & Abraham are already giving me outstanding value, but I’ve got an uneasy feeling about not owning CHO.

    Anyone else in this position?
    What you thinking?
A tripple Chelsea attack is obviously risky and Tomori is outstanding value, but is that ‘value’ in the Chelski defence really worth his place over CHO?

    1. andres
      • 12 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

I am looking to bring a third CHE, already have mount and abraham. Really tempted by CHO, such an exciting option!
blocks tomori though, indeed and vice versa.
I think attacking returns are more certain than defensive ones.

    A) Auba to Wilson (2 weeks only)
    B) Auba to Vardy
    B) Save FT for next GW

Here's my current 11 for this week:

Hope people realise who Liverpool are playing when going without their attackers and not just looking at FDR...

They’re nailed, they’re top of the league and mostly on form, and playing a way out of sorts United and Spurs, then Villa.

    1. Pumpkinhead
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 6 months ago

They are being short sighted - last year Pool has a 'bad' run of fixtures and people sold Salah who ended up with 50 points after 4 or 5 gws.

        Not really.

If you sold Salah for a similar run of games you'd have lost out on 2,2,3,8 in points.

The one time I sold Salah last season and went without a Liverpool attacker at all was after his run of meh form leading up to bou away... and we know how that turned out.

      Pope
      TAA Doherty Soyuncu Lund Rico
      Sterling KdB Mahrez Mount
      Abraham Wilson Vardy

Doherty a punt with good fixtures and will be turned into Robbo eventually, Mahrez also a punt with the two home games in mind. Semi tempted to go Kun/Maddi instead of Vardy/Sterling with Kane as a one week punt too.

I'd love to keep Son over KdB for this weekend but I'll cry if he's benched.

How is this WC team looking
    Pope/Roberto
    Sokratis/Boly/Soyuncu/Tomori/Rico
    KDB/Mane/Mount/James/Guendouzi
    Kun/Vardy/Tammy

Any advice on if there are any switches that should be made to the team. Also not sure who to captain

Very nice, favourite WC I've seen in a while.

Only change I'd make would be James to Maddison or Willian if you could afford it.

Cheers. Can't make the stretch to Maddison or Willian as I'm actually 0.2m short in affording this team! Will probably drop down to 14 options and bench fodder to make up the difference (or switch Kun to Auba which I don't really want to do)

          Could get rid of Roberto.

Yeah I'd keep Aggy too. James -> MLowton and bank the difference. I just think United's attack is impotent. James doesn't know how to actually score. He had 3 goals in 33 starts in the Championship.

      Remove James.

Afternoon all. G2G? Is my bench correct or should I swap? Thanks.

    Pope
    Ota - Soy - Robbo - Rico
    KDB - Sterling - Mount
    Kane - Abraham - Vardy

    (McGovern) - Lund - James - Nakamba

Kane. Can see SHU v ARS being a low scoring affair

When Son last came back from IB, he scored a brace (against Crystal Palace). He played the full 90 and had the same rest as he does for this GW

Sakho was nowhere near fit that day & Cahill had an absolute mare as well - they looked like they were on ice skates the entire 90 minutes

Son was superb though - a genuinely terrifying performance

I just can’t see Spurs dismantling anyone at the minute though, if they play to their pre-IB form & there looked to be serious internal issues within the dressing room

I agree with all your points. BUT Watford look awful defensively too, and Spurs weren't in great form then either (after losing 1-0 to Newcastle)

Can't disagree with that... Although were spurs as bad as this before the Palace game? Poch is linked with departure on an almost daily basis...

But on paper they should be beating Watford comfortably

Is it possible to make a bet that a player will start for a team?

I'll happily bet all my beer tokens Ali will start in goal for us (Lfc) this weekend.

Play McGinn or Rico? On McGinn at the moment, feels wrong doing 5 mids.

McGinn. Think Pukki is probably due a goal this weekend and is on form after int'l break which would ruin Rico's CS

Am I crazy if im starting lundstram over söyuncu? More attacking threat but less chance of a clean sheet of course.

It's a pretty low percentage play. Even if he gets an assist it'll probably be 5 points - and Soyuncu is much more likely to get 6.

Neither really have attacking threat lets be honest. Soy is the better option.

Have you watches Lundstram play? Wouldn't be incredibly surprising to see him get something against Arsenal.

CHO, especially short-term. I'm going for Mount, CHO & Abraham (C) so i wouldnt worry about too much Chelsea.

Mcginn’s fixtures aren’t great but he’s good long term pick. CHO is a bit more exciting so I’d go for him

McGinn cheaper and more value. Triple up on CHE meh. CHO might not even be nailed. McGinn is.

Who reckons a massive thumping on the cards for UTD this weekend? Something like 8-0 🙂

0-1 or 0-2, I think it'll be a hammering in everything but scoreline, we won't threaten and Liverpool win dominate possession.

I don't think it's a risk is it. He had a tweak at a nice time to have a rest, no internationals, cheeky holiday for waffles and beers..
