Possible Alisson return highlights shortage of budget goalkeepers

Like many Fantasy Premier League managers, I am heading into Gameweek 9 hoping to end a run of frustrating misfortune.

With the international break over for another month, I’ve had enough time to reflect over Gameweek 8 in order to refocus for this weekend.

I was hoping to carry over my free transfer but, like a large number of managers, decided to act on impulse when news of Kevin de Bruyne’s (£10.0m) injury broke out.

This gave me an opportunity to redistribute funds and my last transfers involved me selling the Belgian and Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) for Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) with a -4 hit for good measure.

Unfortunately, Ayew unexpectedly ended his run of booking-inspired one-point hauls by somehow scoring and getting three bonus points, whereas Yarmolenko failed to deliver and in turn adopted yellow card duties.

Kevin de Bruyne has caused Fantasy managers some distress over the international break

Abraham’s goal provided damage limitation by softening my red arrow but essentially my hit failed.

I now oversee a team without de Bruyne who could be back sooner to Manchester City’s first team than initially anticipated – but I have a number of other issues to consider.

Firstly, I have been keeping a close eye on the much-anticipated return of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson (£5.8m) who looks to be very close to starting for Jurgen Klopp’s men again.

With Adrian (£4.6m) and the non-starting David Button (£4.0m) currently in my team, this position has automatically become the main area that I need to address for Gameweek 9.

I’ve got £1.3m in the bank so I can sign any replacement up to the value of £5.9m which, thankfully, is most goalkeepers in the game.

Many of the more expensive goalkeepers have better colleagues in defence right now

Leicester have a great run of upcoming games and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) could be an option. Usually, I’d rather buy a super cheap goalkeeper and upgrade one of my defenders to buy Ricardo Pereira (£6.2m) – after all he has scored two goals in his last three games.

Similarly, I considered Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) due to Chelsea’s generous fixtures, but if I wanted their defensive coverage, Fikayo Tomori (£4.7m) or Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) would make more sense.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much on offer for goalkeepers in the budget range at the moment. With Hugo Lloris’ (£5.5m) unfortunate long-term injury, Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m) became an overnight option.

He’s almost like the go-to Adrian replacement. But with confirmation that Michel Vorm (£4.5m) has re-signed for Tottenham on a free transfer, his place could also be at risk with a few inconsistent performances.

After all, Spurs have hardly been playing their best football during this campaign and have been mercurial at best. If anything, I want to avoid their players but might be almost forced into buying Gazzaniga.

The fact of the matter is that there’s no goalkeeper priced in or around £4.5m with a long run of decent games. Mat Ryan (£4.6m) could be an exception between Gameweek 9 and 18 but Gameweeks 12 to 15 are difficult on paper for him.

In the end, I went for Schmeichel as I wanted a long-term, relatively cheap goalkeeper that I would not need to see until the end of the year. Out of all the options above, he seemed the best to me.

Picking captains has been tough this season – and Gameweek 9 is no different

Many seasoned FPL managers will tell you that if you can nail your armband selection more often than not then your overall rank will almost take care of itself.

Unfortunately, in a season characterised by captain blanks for most of us, I am yet to make the highest FPL points’ scorer in my team my skipper for any given Gameweek in 2019/20.

For this weekend, Abraham (at home to Newcastle United) would have been an almost automatic pick but a shock win against Manchester United for Steve Bruce’s men last time out has put a question mark over that way of thinking.

Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) looked crisp during the international break and could be a good shout too. I can’t overlook Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) either, even if the spectre of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) makes him a rotation risk waiting to happen.

However, fitness permitting, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) could be an interesting captain option. David de Gea (£5.6m) picked up an injury on international duty and is poised to miss the match this weekend.

Liverpool have won every Premier League game since August with Manchester United having their worst start in decades. The only thing missing for Liverpool is Salah at his goalscoring best and this could be the match in which he comes back with a bang as Liverpool try to widen the gap between them and Manchester City.

My Gameweek 9 team although I might make a late call on the captaincy

Funny seeing all the casuals creeping out of the woodwork day before the game week starts with questions that have been resolved days ago. Knowing us professionals have a massive advantage after discussing moves for two full weeks with other veterans on here makes me feel optimistic about my 2m rank.

On my WC, which option do you think is best?

    Ryan Button
    TAA Soyuncu Lundstram Rico ____
    Mané Sterling KDB Mount ____
    Abraham ____ ____

    A) Tomori Cantwell Wilson Jiminez (343)
    B) Boly Dendoncker King Vardy (343)
    C) Boly Maddison Wilson Connollly (352)

Leaning towards A at the moment as I think Jiminez could be a good differential, but leaves me without Leicester attack. C may be a less risky option.

So many doubts tonight ... Mahrez and D Silva (Plus Aguero in my team) and wondering who should make way for KDB! Mahrez to KDB in a straight swop or Silva and Salah to Mane to KDB is doable!!

BUT, I'd also like to bring in Wilson – agh this is doing my head in!

In the same boat but 0.1 from straight swap. Could do Mahrez + Pukki > DeBruyne + King or Silva for Maddison. Just can’t decide. Also where her to captain Aguero or Abraham

Glad I'm not the only one wasting a Friday night on this .... Last GW Mahrez was looking like a pretty good option, even with limited minutes, BUT it doesn't work when he's taken off on 59 minutes. Obviously that is the risk ... But then again, he could completely bosh it this week! I think I'm going Abraham!

Why do you want Vardy? His stats are god awful and Leicester’s attacking metrics are alarming to say the least. Bottom 2-3 in the league! 9.0 is a large chuck of cash. Nevertheless he could come good but that’s not enough positive data there to convince me at this stage

Ohhh yes, 2.7m rank, just under 100 behind ML leader, worst start ever recorded, it'll just be a slog to pull it back, i've accepted it.

Have 2 FT and want to do James to Maddison. To free the money should I do:
    A) Salah to Mane
    B) Sterling to KDB
    C) Pukki to Ayew?

Best 5th budget midfielder? Got £5.3m

    A) Could stick with Cantwell
    B) Could get Traore, feels expensive for 5th
    C) £4.5m filler - Dendonker, Saka, Stephens...

If they’ll never play really, I like Dend. Cheap and plays when you need him to

    Pope
    TAA VVD Ota Guilbert Rico
    Sterling Mount Salah*
    Abraham Auba

    Subs: Button, Yarmo, Greenwood, Dendonker

    1) Should I sell Salah for KDB or someone else?
    2) Bench one of Rico Guilbert and Yarmo?

What time do price changes usually happen these days? They were a bit random earlier in the season.

Argh. Starting to sweat the Pukki and Salah price drops. I really wanted to keep them for the season, but it feels like it would be better to sell. Crap!

If you want them for the season, and think they will do well then ignore their price drops mate. What does it matter what price they are if they deliver for you?

I'm just thinking, if I sell Salah for Mane, I can then get him back for less next week.

    G2G?

    Pope
    Tomori Digne Soy
    Sterling Mount Salah KDB
    Wilson Pukki Tammy

    Button Rico Lundstram Cantwell

    0FT, 1.0ITB

Pondering whether to transfer out Salah due to injury doubt and imminent price fall. This will let me fund upgrades of Digne and Pukki to TAA and Vardy in later weeks, but I'd need to take a -4 hit now.

What’s the logic behind Salah > Mane? Sideways at best and I think it’s a backwards move. Salah still has the better stats both xG and xA and is on pens which is huge. I hope it wasn’t a decision governed by the imminent price changes

    How's my WC team looking?

    Pope, Gazzaniga
    Pereira, Tomori, Soyuncu, Lundstram, Rico
    Sterling, KDB, Madisson, Mount, Dendoncker
    Auba, Wison, Abraham

    1) is a Leicester double up in defence sensible? Soyuncu seems to be best at 4.7 but maybe Burn or Lowton is better to spread the risk?

    2) is it work having Gazzaniga or should i downgrade to McGovern and bank the 0.4 or bring in someone like Schar for Soyuncu?

Pretty happy with the rest of it. 0 left in the bank. Any help appreciated.

I personally wouldn't double up on defence. TAA for Pereira? Would mean sacrifices elsewhere though.

Don't like doubling either but very good fixtures and dunk near suspension, if i get lowton the i basically double.up with Pope. Not many other great options? Maybe burns?

I would realistically need to lose Maddison or another mid to have enough for Trent which i don't like, not when Liverpool have so many tough games coming up

Very similar team (see above) but I reckon you either go with Gazza as your main keeper or a 4.0...

No Liverpool is also massive. 18 wins in a row....

If you changed Gazza to 4.0 could you do Auba to Aguero and sterling or KDB to Mane/Salah

Think i may go with a 4m keeper and bank the money.

Its a risk alright but not for the whole season, once Liverpool's fixtures change then i will bring in Salah or Mane for KDB or Sterling.

Straight choice between rico and aguero (leaves me with 0.2 in the bank) or otamendi and vardy (leaves me with 2.0 in the bank)

    Rest of team is
    patricio McGovern
    Soy trent lund tomori
De bruyne mane mount yarmo dendonker
    Wilson tammy

    Thoughts please! Any help appreciated!

    Repost..no responses

    A) soy, Maddison, Wilson
    B) perreira, Maddison, king
    C) perreira, odoi, Wilson

I already have Abraham and mount

On b right now (not sure I want to triple up Chelsea attack, expect king to be moved centrally with Fraser coming in and he is on pens)
