Possible Alisson return highlights shortage of budget goalkeepers

Like many Fantasy Premier League managers, I am heading into Gameweek 9 hoping to end a run of frustrating misfortune.

With the international break over for another month, I’ve had enough time to reflect over Gameweek 8 in order to refocus for this weekend.

I was hoping to carry over my free transfer but, like a large number of managers, decided to act on impulse when news of Kevin de Bruyne’s (£10.0m) injury broke out.

This gave me an opportunity to redistribute funds and my last transfers involved me selling the Belgian and Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) for Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) and Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) with a -4 hit for good measure.

Unfortunately, Ayew unexpectedly ended his run of booking-inspired one-point hauls by somehow scoring and getting three bonus points, whereas Yarmolenko failed to deliver and in turn adopted yellow card duties.

Kevin de Bruyne has caused Fantasy managers some distress over the international break

Abraham’s goal provided damage limitation by softening my red arrow but essentially my hit failed.

I now oversee a team without de Bruyne who could be back sooner to Manchester City’s first team than initially anticipated – but I have a number of other issues to consider.

Firstly, I have been keeping a close eye on the much-anticipated return of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson (£5.8m) who looks to be very close to starting for Jurgen Klopp’s men again.

With Adrian (£4.6m) and the non-starting David Button (£4.0m) currently in my team, this position has automatically become the main area that I need to address for Gameweek 9.

I’ve got £1.3m in the bank so I can sign any replacement up to the value of £5.9m which, thankfully, is most goalkeepers in the game.

Many of the more expensive goalkeepers have better colleagues in defence right now

Leicester have a great run of upcoming games and Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) could be an option. Usually, I’d rather buy a super cheap goalkeeper and upgrade one of my defenders to buy Ricardo Pereira (£6.2m) – after all he has scored two goals in his last three games.

Similarly, I considered Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) due to Chelsea’s generous fixtures, but if I wanted their defensive coverage, Fikayo Tomori (£4.7m) or Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) would make more sense.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much on offer for goalkeepers in the budget range at the moment. With Hugo Lloris’ (£5.5m) unfortunate long-term injury, Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m) became an overnight option.

He’s almost like the go-to Adrian replacement. But with confirmation that Michel Vorm (£4.5m) has re-signed for Tottenham on a free transfer, his place could also be at risk with a few inconsistent performances.

After all, Spurs have hardly been playing their best football during this campaign and have been mercurial at best. If anything, I want to avoid their players but might be almost forced into buying Gazzaniga.

The fact of the matter is that there’s no goalkeeper priced in or around £4.5m with a long run of decent games. Mat Ryan (£4.6m) could be an exception between Gameweek 9 and 18 but Gameweeks 12 to 15 are difficult on paper for him.

In the end, I went for Schmeichel as I wanted a long-term, relatively cheap goalkeeper that I would not need to see until the end of the year. Out of all the options above, he seemed the best to me.

Picking captains has been tough this season – and Gameweek 9 is no different

Many seasoned FPL managers will tell you that if you can nail your armband selection more often than not then your overall rank will almost take care of itself.

Unfortunately, in a season characterised by captain blanks for most of us, I am yet to make the highest FPL points’ scorer in my team my skipper for any given Gameweek in 2019/20.

For this weekend, Abraham (at home to Newcastle United) would have been an almost automatic pick but a shock win against Manchester United for Steve Bruce’s men last time out has put a question mark over that way of thinking.

Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) looked crisp during the international break and could be a good shout too. I can’t overlook Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) either, even if the spectre of Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) makes him a rotation risk waiting to happen.

However, fitness permitting, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) could be an interesting captain option. David de Gea (£5.6m) picked up an injury on international duty and is poised to miss the match this weekend.

Liverpool have won every Premier League game since August with Manchester United having their worst start in decades. The only thing missing for Liverpool is Salah at his goalscoring best and this could be the match in which he comes back with a bang as Liverpool try to widen the gap between them and Manchester City.

My Gameweek 9 team although I might make a late call on the captaincy

Wilson surely has to read the script - it’s all lined up for him

Although if Liverpool click, they could be set for big scores at both ends of the line

Allison back, Utd scoring something like 17 in their last 20... the Utd injuries etc

No doubt... but what’s different this year is that Utd have once again deteriorated (for about the 6th year in a row) and Liverpool have once again improved (for about the 5th or 6th year in a row)

Eventually that gap is going to translate into a hiding - hopefully not Sunday, but would you bet against it?

How bad could this game get for Utd on Sunday?

For my money, it has to be a damage limitation exercise as the gulf in class is too large (who’d have thought 5-6 years ago we’d be saying that ahead of a game at old Trafford)

A damning indictment of where the club has gone these last few years

      1,1,2,0,1,2,1,0 (goals conceded)

Yep - I look at the fixtures they’ve played and there’s no one even remotely near the class of Liverpool... yet they still sit struggling in 12th

I think it’s a case of hoping the form book goes out he window, and/or a freak occurrence to keep the result respectable, let alone the scoreline

Is there actually case to be made that a heavy, heavy defeat is actually in the best interests of the club longer term?

As painful as it would be to concede a bucketload, It might finally ellicit some sort of fundamental change - massive changes needed

          Sadly agreed
Since we're@ it, read an article yesterday that Kevin Glazer (one of 6 co-owners) has converted his Class B shares to Class A (Man United shares)
That loses his voting power but allows him to sell those shares.

Maybe the Glazers have sucked all the money they could have now & will free us 😮
Hopefully they sell the Club to a guy who loves Football more than ££

Absolutely not. Wolves have a tendency to frustratingly concede 1 goal (remember last season). It’s going to be difficult with Europa league only 2-3 days before their league fixtures and Turf Moor is an absolute defensive fortress for the Clatets

Even at 1.0 I’d still prefer Salah, probably even 1.5

Salah was always going to be cold on the opinion polls at the minute due to his last two (league) games combined with Mane’s haul last time out - but the guy doesn’t really do extended periods without a goal very regularly...

(And even Mané has 2 blanks in his last 3)

The 5 game drought from GW27-31 for Salah last year seems a very strange period now in hindsight given his 10 goals & 3 assists in the 11 games preceding that spell, and his 5 goals & 3 assists in the 6 games directly following it

That being said - Mané is an absolutely lethal forward, no question there... he had multiple premier league hattricks under his belt before even arriving at Liverpool after all

But for pure FPL purposes i’d still back Salah to come out on top... time will tell!

It’s like people forget what a beast Salah has been over the past 2 seasons breaking records and setting new standards for FPL. I fear managers are far too myopic for their own good and fail to see the possibility of points in future GW’s whilst wanting to buy a shiny new toy that is over-performing. Salah is ahead in stats and is on set-pieces. That’s a no brainer for me. Both are great assets but those swapping from Salah > Mane is just mystifying

Lol at "a shiny new toy that is over-performing." He's been outperforming Salah for a good while now. Is there a stat that shows how many selfish shots Salah takes and misses instead of passing to a player in a better position?

I wish there was because Mane would top that metric. Have a look at his assists over the past 3 seasons. Absolutely abhorrent

And yet he has kept pace with, and probably outscored Salah for a good while now - it's a festivus miracle!

Since Salah joined their points totals are interesting over different ranges, Mané has accelerated his points scoring rate considerably

                Since Mo joined:
Mo 617 points in 82 apps
Mané 435 points in 73 apps

                Since beginning of last season:
Mo 314 points in 46 apps
Mané 288 points in 46 apps

                Since beginning of this season:
Mo 55 points in 8 apps
Mané 57 points in 8 apps (1 sub obvs)

The members area comparison is very interesting though in that p, even when setting the comparison range solely for the last 8 games, Salah comes out on top quite heavily in terms of underlying stats (higher XG, higher open play XG, higher XGi, more penalty box touches, more shots on target etc. etc)

Who knows though... stranger things have happened than a changing of the guard from Salah to Mané as Liverpool’s #1 FPL threat

I still think Salah has too many strings to his bow to play second fiddle to Mane for long from an FPL perspective though - set pieces and penalties straight away act as a nice buffer to his scoring over longer periods, as well as that selfish streak which sometimes leads him to shoot or attempt to beat another man rather than pass

The price differential looks too small imo & may not be long reversing

Hmmm... from GW32-38 Mané got 5 goals in 7 games... It looks like Mo got 5 goals and 3 assists in that same spell though?

That's only a short spell though. I think from GW20 - GW38 it's all Mane (15 goals vs 10, 1 assist vs 3, not sure on baps, but should be way ahead there too?). My point (which Irbox is disputing) is that Mane has been outscoring Salah 'for a good while now'..

Hmmm, again I’m not sure on the arbitrary gameweek range of half a season being valid, yet both longer ranges and shorter ranges being invalid - but even at that - is it really ‘All Mane’?

15G 1A vs 10G 3A? 16 returns vs 13 is a gap, but not a resounding one - and the sustainability of Mane’s output really has to be questioned

See more analysis here to continue the discussion - which is good by the way 🙂

Well, again I go back to the point I was trying to make that Mane has been outscoring Salah 'for a good while now', which has been disputed. He didn't outscore him over the whole of last season obviously, but did so over the second half and has continued (albeit slightly, but with less game time) to do so this season.

I think it’s probably the terminology that’s causing the confusion - ‘a good while now’ is possibly not the most objective of measurement periods and begs the proposal of several time periods, both recent and historic, over which Salah has outscored Mané which would contradict the point - but for sure over the last 20-25 GW’s Mané has been in red hot form

On direct attacking returns, he does appear to be reaching a level of output that all but the highest echelon of elite FPL players would find unsustainable (19 G 3A in his last 23 starts)

Delving deeper into the statistics also shows a trend that could be interpreted as ‘over performance’ in comparison to Salah - statistically it is actually quite one sided between the two in Salah’s favour

(Despite being 2 FPL points behind Mané season to date - Salah actually BETTERS him for a host of underlying stats - XG, Non-penalty XG, XA, XGi, Shots on target, Penalty Box touches, Goal attempts, attempts in the box etc etc...)

And with Salah also having the traditional FPL points boosters of a share of set pieces and penalties, you’d have to think he is well positioned to continue delivering at his quite frankly astounding level of consistency since joining liverpool - in (84 league games) he has only ever went more than 2 consecutive games without an attacking return on 7 occasions

5 of these patches were simple 2-game droughts, and after all 5 he scored a goal in the following game

The sixth was a 5-game drought from GW27-31 last year, which was followed by 5 goals & 3 assists in the subsequent 6 matches

This is his 7th such lean spell - fascinated to see how it ends 🙂

Well, when I went Salah to mane on WC, it saved me about a million & helped improve my overall squad, that's something we shouldn't overlook, I WCed in GW 7, but yeah, salahs price is quite tempting now,
But I think you should consider it as mane + player X vs Salah + player Y
