Everton find their groove as Richarlison returns to striker role

Everton 2-0 West Ham

Goals: Bernard (£6.5m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m)

Assists: Theo Walcott (£6.2m), Richarlison (£7.9m)

Bonus Points: Djibril Sidibé x3 (£5.3m) Bernard x2, Michael Keane (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m), Roberto x1 (£4.4m)

Everton ended their run of four consecutive Premier League defeats with an impressive 2-0 win over West Ham United, with strikes from Bernard (£6.5m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.5m).

Marco Silva’s five changes seemingly energised his Everton side who were rampant from the first whistle to the last. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.8m) and Sigurdsson were dropped to the bench prior to kick-off, with Richarlison (£7.9m) playing in a central striker role, yet the Brazilian was given full license to roam into wide areas.

With a sense of renewed optimism clearly present in Everton’s play, Bernard’s strike in the 17th minute opened the scoring was a well-taken goal by the Brazilian forward.

Bernard celebrates scoring the opening goal with Alex Iwobi – who played the number 10 role

West Ham’s goalkeeper Roberto (£4.4m) should have done better to deal with the strike as he continues to come under criticism in Lukasz Fabianski‘s (£5.0m) prolonged absence. With four first-half saves, the Spaniard was certainly the busier of the two keepers in the first 45 minutes, but he definitely appears to be the weak link in West Ham’s defence.

Despite a minor Hammers fightback in the closing stages, it was Sigurdsson who scored an excellent goal to kill off the game.

Although the Icelandic international was dropped to the bench initially by Silva, his first goal of the season and just his second attacking return is likely to fuel the midfielder’s confidence as Everton bid to get their campaign back on track.

Richarlison’s centre-forward role gave him plenty of licence to roam

It was Richarlison, playing officially in a central striking role, who laid off the assist for Sigurdsson, highlighting his effectiveness in the final third for the Toffees. Richarlison arguably should have found the net himself, striking the post in the first half.

Throughout the game at Goodison the Brazilian international drifted across Everton’s front-line, making it a difficult afternoon for the likes of Issa Diop (£4.5m) and Angelo Ogbonna (£4.5m) in central defence.

The recent emergence of Calvert-Lewin, with two goals in his last three Premier League games, could have interested managers looking for a budget striker but Richarlison’s performance and his wider impact on Everton’s forward line is likely to convince Silva that the Brazilian is best utilised in a central roaming role as opposed to solely out wide.

Everton will look to use this result to kick on and ensure their 2019/20 campaign does not slip into the realms of disarray, and with the likes of Richarlison, Sigurdsson and Bernard all registering attacking returns, the Toffees are well placed to offer potential value to managers with a promising run of fixtures including Brighton, Southampton and Norwich in their next four Gameweeks.

West Ham have struggled at the back since Roberto has been forced to deputise for Fabianski

After keeping three consecutive clean-sheets against Norwich, Aston Villa and Manchester United, Pellegrini’s side have now failed to keep the opposition out on three successive occasions, with the decline in their defensive solidity coinciding with the injury to goalkeeper Fabianski, who is expected to be out until 2020.

Although managers may have been inclined to invest in the likes of Diop or Ogbonna – who have started all eight of their side’s Premier League fixtures since the opening weekend – presently Pellegrini’s men to not represent a side worthy of defensive investment.

It was not just West Ham’s defence that struggled though, with Pellegrini declaring his dissatisfaction with all of his starting XI.

Yarmolenko did not start for West Ham at Goodison Park

To the frustration of his owners, Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) was named on the bench as Pablo Fornals (£6.1m) was handed a surprise start. The latter was especially poor in an opening period characterised by a lack of service for Sébastian Haller (£7.4m).

“If I could have changed all 11 players at half time then I would have done.” – Manuel Pellegrini

In an attempting to fix their problems, Pellegrini left Fornals on the pitch and replaced Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) with Yarmolneko at half-time instead, which arguably did not help their cause too much.

Pablo Fornals continues to add very little to West Ham’s attacking prospects

For Pellegrini, a highly promising start to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign has now firmly dulled, with his side now winless in three.

Early-season interest in the likes of Haller may now have simmered given the Hammer’s alarming inconsistency, although there remains value in the likes of Yarmolenko despite his benching in the lunch-time kick-off.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford, Sidibé, Keane, Mina (Holgate 90+4′) Digne, Andre Gomes, Davies, Bernard, Walcott (Keane 86′) Iwobi (Sigurdsson 87′) Richarlison.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Roberto, Fredericks, Ogbonna, Diop, Masuaku, Rice, Noble (Ajeti 74′) Lanzini, Fornals (Wilshere 63′) Anderson (Yarmolenko 45′) Haller.

Probable price fall for Son & Pukki, URGENT transfers need to be made. Have Soyuncu (sou) & Tomori (bur) as bench cover.

    A) Pukki (MUN) -> Jimenez (new)
    OR
    B) Son (liv) + Pukki (MUN) -> Martial (nor) + Lacazette (CRY), for a hit??

I had Otamendi Mahrez and Aguero this week:(. Since Kun and Mahrez got rested, I think they'll have a better chance of starting next weekend against Villa at home. Kun Captain looks good. The only concern is who plays in the Champions League.

I sold Kun a couple of GWs ago... This roulette gets be crazy.. You expect you heavy hitter to at least start and fight for the points.
I think the only players worth having from City is KDB and Dilva (at least he is cheaper but still ticking)

damn that sucks bro. I played my wildcard for GW6 and made the decision then that I cant be bothered with Pep Roulette and that I would just have KDB for now.
I kinda said to myself that Auba could probably cover Sterling (cheaper and more consistant returns), and well tbh its worked out and im so glad I dont have to worry about City team sheets anymore. Sure KDB got injured but everyone had him

Aside from Sterling, Kun has been my main fear and tried to cover him with the keeper Kane and give him the arm band for like 4/5 weeks on the trot, has that worked out? Not sure havent checked but it hasnt been a complete disaster (although last two have been blanks for Kane)

I find when you are acceptive of the principle that “underlying statistics” are not the FPL panacea they’re often sold as, the game becomes an awful lot easier

Not necessarily in that your team’s FPL score will always be good, but more in that you won’t have the false expectation of a strong correlation between how well underpinned your decisions are by those players (and teams) at the top (and bottom) of an excel table, and those player’s FPL scores over the very short 5-10 game windows within which we have to make decisions as FPL managers

      Is it 100% skill? No.

      Is it 100% luck? No.

Is it gambling with a mix of luck & skill? Yes. And the percentage share of luck is significantly larger (and therefore skill smaller) than what you had personally previously thought.

im 3-5-2 at the moment but its hard to say, some weeks 5 in midfield seems a great shout, then other weeks 3 in attack.
If Jimi has the form and fixtures I think he beats most of those cheap 5th mids like Yarmo.
Im probably switching back to 3-4-3 in a week or two

We’ve been crying out for transparency for a long time now:

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/20384051

With the recent farce over certain player’s prices, it’s not far off being rigged - we know that roughly speaking transfers in = price rise...

But roughly speaking doesn’t really cut it when literally 0.1 of a margin of error can mean the difference between getting a player in or not

Looking at going balls deep for the next 2:

Aguero, Sterling, KDB for the Villa and Southampton matches (captain tbc).

This either gets the season up and running or completely de-rails it. Any others fancy it? Got a wildcard to clean up the inevitable mess too.

The champions league will start to wreak havoc soon - possibly this week

Either players benched, or players subbed early to prep for next game

I think KDB’s the only one safe, as when he doesn’t play they don’t win... but even he has fitness issues too

Agree with you completely. Think there is a huge upside, though. Hopefully another 8-0 on the cards in one of those matches. Don't think I'd do it without the Wildcard at the end, however. David Silva gone completely unnoticed for me so I think he's an option for the wildcard to keep 2 city as it hurts a lot less when he's benched due to his price.

I am in the same situation. The thing is that unless there is an overwhelming reason to spend the money it is better off staying ITB until something comes up to change that. The mid priced players are sometimes better options than the more expensive ones especially this season so I'm keeping my money ITB and waiting.

I actually did not know how serious FPL was taken until I joined this site.

Have been playing the game for 8 seasons now. Never went into that much detail compared to this season. Used to be times where I forgot my password in previous season and just left my team lol.

But this season I am studying fixtures, watching most matches, keeping eyes on players, their form and instances og going with players I would have nevet gone with. Damn, this season so early on, I cannot recall taking the amount of hits so early in a season fiddling with my team, losing sleep and my marbles.

This site actually has me hooked on FPL now whereas previously it was just looking at a screen with a team and different colours of shirts 🙂

I got rid otherwise I knew I was going to lose 0.1 and would have been another 0.1 loss if I was trying to be patient with him.

Not worth it to be honest.

Liverpool haven't won at Old Trafford in the league for 5 years, think people are overestimating this one.

Palace had never won at Old Trafford before & Steve Bruce had never beaten United so...

Yes, but look at the previous champions and the top players like Mark Sutherns. They are in the same position as you and me. I would rather be dropping rank with the big boys than gaining rank at the moment.
