More joy for Lundstram owners as Blades defence excels once again

Sheffield United 1-0 Arsenal

  • Goal: Lys Mousset (£4.9m)
  • Assist: Jack O’Connell (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: O’Connell x3, John Egan (£4.5m) x2, Mousset, Chris Basham (£4.5m) x1

The John Lundstram (£4.6m) love-in continues, with the budget Fantasy asset recording his fourth clean sheet of the season on Monday evening and moving back to the top of the overall points table among Fantasy Premier League defenders.

Lundstram contributed to an excellent collective performance from Chris Wilder’s team in the final match of Gameweek 9, with the Blades moving up to ninth in the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over a flat Arsenal side.

No top-flight club has kept more shut-outs or conceded fewer goals than Sheffield United in 2019/20.

The fact that they have played five of the current top six in the division in the opening nine Gameweeks makes their achievement even more impressive and it is genuinely not hyperbole to say that, amid the struggles of various teams elsewhere, they are one of the most impressive defensive units in the Premier League at present.

There was the odd moment to cause hearts to flutter on Monday night – Nicolas Pepe (£9.3m) and Dani Ceballos (£5.5m) failing to connect with shots when well-positioned in the hosts’ area – but for the most part, the Blades kept Arsenal at bay without too much bother and nullified Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) completely.

With Lundstram owned by more FPL managers than the rest of the Sheffield United squad combined, it’s easy to forget about the rest of Wilder’s defence – four of whom are now cheaper than Lundstram following his price rises.

Jack O’Connell (£4.5m), Chris Basham (£4.5m), John Egan (£4.5m), Enda Stevens (£5.0m) and George Baldock (£4.5m) were part of an excellent rearguard effort in the second half and sporadically showcased their attacking attributes at the other end, with overlapping centre-halves O’Connell and Basham getting forward to support wing-backs Stevens and Baldock.

It was O’Connell, indeed, who provided the headed assist for match-winner Lys Mousset (£4.9m) in the first half.

Five Sheffield United players now sit in the top 11 highest-scoring FPL defenders of 2019/20, with Basham not far behind that quintet.

Dean Henderson (£4.6m), meanwhile, now trails only Rui Patricio (£5.2m) for overall points among goalkeepers.

There is less appeal regarding Sheffield United’s attacking assets, with rotation and a relative lack of creativity – only Watford and Newcastle have scored fewer goals than Wilder’s side – obvious deterrents regarding the Blades’ forwards.

A pairing of Mousset and David McGoldrick (£5.4m) was the fourth different combination Wilder has gone for up top this season, with Oli McBurnie (£5.9m) and Callum Robinson (£5.3m) having played a major role in the first eight Gameweeks and Billy Sharp (£5.7m) making cameo appearances off the bench.

Wilder said of Mousset’s performance after his full league debut for the Blades:

He has been knocking on the door. We had to get him up to speed. A lot of work has been put in with the conditioners and Lys himself, to get him in the situation where he starts a game.

You could see, just after half-time, he was struggling. But he’d done enough on his home debut.

Arsenal have struggled away from home over the last ten months and this was their fourth Premier League fixture on the road without a win.

Arguably all five of their displays away from home have been unconvincing in 2019/20, with the win at Newcastle and draw at Old Trafford about as good as it has got – which is saying something.

At the Emirates, the Gunners have the third-best minutes-per-chance average among Premier League clubs.

Away from home, they rank a lowly joint-15th for that statistic.

The good news for owners of Aubameyang and co. is that three of Arsenal’s next four fixtures are in north London.

Pepe and Bukayo Saka (£4.5m) were intermittently bright on Monday, with the former perhaps having his best game in an Arsenal shirt (very faint praise) but ultimately responsible for a horrible miscue from six yards when the Gunners had their clearest opportunity of the game.

Unai Emery said of his two wide players:

Pepe is improving and I think Pepe’s way with us is little-by-little, getting better. The next step is to score.

Tonight, for example, the best chance is one he is usually going to score but tonight he didn’t take that with efficiency. He also had two shots that were very important. I think he is improving and taking confidence with us. But it is one process.

Another player, Bukayo, is another step ahead he did tonight.

The second-half introduction of Dani Ceballos (£5.5m) and the fit-again Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) injected some urgency into their play but the hosts were scarcely troubled, save for Ceballos’ weak shot from a Saka cross.

Aubameyang has made a habit of scoring from precious few opportunities over the last 18 months, regularly emerging from near-anonymity to deliver an attacking return for his owners.

Even his Midas touch couldn’t turn the game around at Bramall Lane, with one blocked first-half attempt all he had to show for his efforts as his teammates starved him of service.

Emery was bullish in defeat, highlighting a strong penalty shout on Sokratis (£5.0m) in his post-match press conference:

Really I think we created more chances than them, the better chances, but tonight we didn’t achieve the efficiency to win that match.

We conceded more corners to them than we wanted, and from one they scored. Also, when they are pushing and they are taking a lot of corners, they can do that. We created more corners, 12 [compared to] seven or eight for them, and also we had the chances and had a very clear penalty to Sokratis. I think the VAR is for this reason, for actions like that.

The first chances for us were very clear, for Pepe was the key I think because they are the team in the Premier League who has conceded the least I think, with Liverpool – seven only – and if they score the first goal, then defensively they are very strong and they defended very well.

In the second half, it was not easy to get chances, I think we controlled the ball more with possession because they conceded metres on the pitch and we had chances to score, but we didn’t achieve that goal to draw and the try to win.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham, Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Norwood (McBurnie 85′), Lundstram, Fleck, Stevens; Mousset (Sharp 55′), McGoldrick (Freeman 78′).

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac; Xhaka (Lacazette 69′), Guendouzi; Willock (Ceballos 46′), Pepe (Martinelli 78′), Saka; Aubameyang,

Cantwell, Jorginho and Pukki need to go.

Consider Tielemans and CHO in midfield.

      Not sure about Pukki replacement

Maybe a tad early for that level of investment in Pool defense.
      Dilva and Jorginho nice differentials.

What could be a nice idea to assist us all:
Instead of throwing stats at us from all directions, (which has failed dismally in recent weeks by the way) why not have an eye test poll from the games we have managed to watch.
Make 3 choices not dependent of price, fixture and position and send them through. It could be a handy tool.
My players this week were: Dacoure, Iwobi and Grealish. Obviously we want fantasy assets, but on many occasions what we see often comes up trumps in the weeks to come

    1. Warby84
      • 8 Years

Grealish looked really poor a few weeks back but I am tempted to get him in as he looks like he’s playing a free role position.. Maybe in the next couple of weeks...

Ends Stevens looks good but not sure a dbl up in Defence is on the cards

Richarlison but not sure I’d ever go back at his price

Agree on Grealish and Stevens. Grealish more likely to keep it up IMO. As many of us do, I have Mcginn and Villas fixtures are not great. Eye candy yes.

Team score of 38 minus 12

Had no City but brought in Dilva for Cantwell GW10 for -4.

Salah no show but VC Vardy.

Do not feel to down about it considering the low average.

My rank went from 885k to 1.7m but recovered to 1.3m after autosub and VC points.

Think my team is looking good for GW10 so feeling positive 🙂

I did the stupid but common move of replacing KDB with Mahrez on the basis of price drops fitting into my plans. What irks me the most is KDB can lose a third of his ownership and his price rises!!!
Anyway, Mahrez did not play and I had Lund off the bench for 6 points. A loss in value in point 5 and a 4 point net gain in points. Not big numbers but definitely a "rough/smooth" story.

Rough: played the WC and benched Rico and Lundstram, instead playing Söyüncü and Boly alongside TAA. Abraham captain.

Also, the pre-WC team would've done better, and I'm already looking to adjust the moves I made (hit likely).

      Smooth: Hudson-Odoi. That's it.

        Had a great week!

Smooth; Grealish doing bits for me again, had him all season as my Hudson Odoi placeholder but now looks like a season keeper! Speaking of Hudson Odoi, got him in this week, not quite as smooth as I sold James. Double Liverpool fullbacks with points from Robbo. Nine points off the bench from Lundstram and Cantwell and three pointers from KdB and Ryan.

Rough; Abraham(c), but my alternative Kane did no better. Kane blanking vs WAT. Salah no show.

247k GW rank and up from 39k to 9.6k with two FTs,wildcard and all chips. I’m starting to dream of a real big season...

Smooth: Alonso paying off with 24 points in the 3 games I've owned him. Always a fan of taking opportunities when they arise rather than worrying about "a transfer waiting to happen", and this one has worked perfectly. Also started Rico and got Lundstram off the bench after putting him ahead of the nightmare that is Ceballos.

        51 (-4) = 47 points and a nice green arrow.

        My worst season yet continues;

Every single player that I started blanked or didn't turn up. Then a few yellow cards and a disallowed Mane goal on top of that.

Only bright side from none of my 3 Man City players turning up is that 3rd on my bench Lundstram came on with his 6 points.

Finished with 29 points and a GW rank of 5,766,250.

O'Connell and Lundstram, 2 of the 3 players that didn't blank in my squad, were 3rd and 2nd on my bench respectively. Vice Captained Vardy, the only other non-blanker, Captained de Bruyne who would have collected the easiest goal in his life if Jesus wasn't a monumental *****.

On the bright side I sold Salah and Otamendi before their no shows for Ricardo and Mané with 2 FT, thus denying myself the autosub jam that Lundstram and O'Connell would have provided me with.

My 1st sub didn't play, so that's why I would have got the 17 points from Lundstram and O'Connell

Rough - my worst WC team ever I think, managed to score 28 points total, Tomori's clean sheet the only return. The two highest scorers in my team (Rico and Lundstram) both stayed on my bench.

Front seven of Mané, KDB, Maddison, Mount, Auba, Wilson, Abraham (c) scored 18 between them.

        Rough

Debated whether I should transfer Pukki to Jiménez for free or take a -4 to get in Wilson and CHO for Pukki and Dilva. Went for the latter and lost 12 points.

        Smooth:
        CHO reduced the damage

Smooth - Aguero, Salah and Pukki out for Vardy (c), Auba and Mane.

Rough - Gutting that Mane and Auba blanked with Aguero and Salah not involved. A team of blankers apart from Vardy (c) and Tomori.

6th consecutive red arrow. Roll on the next international break!

        46 - smoothish

        Smooth - sold Pukki (1) and Son (1) for Vardy (8) and D.Silva (11) = 17 point swing

Rough - Abraham Captain, Auba blank and everyone else getting Lundestrum or Rico from their bench - I had 17 bench points this week.

        week 5 I was at 2.6 million
now I'm up to about 330k

So no complaints and still lots of opportunity to improve rank as it's still quite tight

All rough. Kept Pukki and Otamendi and Son (Has punished us in the past so although thought unlikely to start felt had to keep him. Got punished again by VAR instead) to Wilson(c) and Boly. Salah no show replaced by Mings with Lundstram 1st sub. Had Digne CS but all blanks elsewhere. 27 points, worst score in years if not ever.

Smooth: Highest rank in my history of playing FPL, currently at 11,443. Playing a much more patient game this season, and not spending too much time tinkering and reading posts has strangely resulted in wiser decisions, or maybe it's just luck.

Other than that, no notable roughs or smooths this week.

I'm that annoyingly lucky one this week.

Smooth - captained Alonso and got both Rico and Lundstram off the bench. 65 points and up to just over 1k overall.

Rough - same boat as many. Not a single return from mids or forwards.

I wouldn't double up on Leicester attack despite their fixtures, I think one of Vardy or Maddison is enough. Vardy gets the nod there. I'd rather have Dilva instead of Maddison at a similar price.

      My defence looks like this

      TAA Dunk Lund Aurier Rico

Not moving on TAA Dunk or Lund.

Want to keep Aurier as I reckon he is nailed and at 4.9 even with Spurs dire form Aurier is still an attacking outlet.

Want to upgrade Rico. Will have around 5.6 to spend.

Thinking PVA is a good option. He will rise again soon so will have to monitor his price.

PVA's fixture run from GW14 to 21 is fantastic.

GW10 to 13 not great but Palace are solid at the back and can just see who to play out of PVA, Aurier, Dunk and Lund GW10 to 13.

TAA obviously to start every GW.

Played a handful of times last season, he is more a centre back by trade but had been earmarked to play RB before he got injured. He is only young but a full Argentina international. Don't be surprised if Aurier doesn't play all the time.

Average scores in the whole FF game worldwide this season :
      GW1 65
      GW2 41
      GW3 44
      GW4 57
      GW5 52
      GW6 52
      GW7 51
      GW8 36

It feels to me like it has been less uniform than that.
