Patience and holding the transfer my way of responding to Gameweek 9

Holly, the founder of FPL Community, has two top 10k finishes in five FPL seasons, is a regular guest on the FPL Show and recent addition to the Scoutcast line-up.

It’s fair to say, like most people, I haven’t had the best start to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season.

Those 94 points from Gameweek 1 have faded beyond a distant memory, to a dream and it’s been largely downhill since then.

Four red arrows ensued and I’ve been bouncing around the 1.5 million mark for a good few weeks now and, in the words of David Wardale, with one Wildcard wasted.

I’m in unchartered territory for this stage of the season and catching is not a position I’m used to. Last season I was camped in the top 100k for the entire 38 Gameweeks, with the large majority of them in the top 10k so I’m still unsure how I quite ended up here.

I guess this season has been truly unpredictable, just when we see a trend developing, it crumbles before our eyes.

Manchester City have proved to be a problematic source of investment this season

Manchester City were attacking kings, until they crumbled against Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Sergio Aguero (£12.2m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) and Callum Wilson (£8.0m) all looked unstoppable until Gameweek 8 rolled around and stopped them in their tracks.

Captaincy has failed us week in and week out, to the point where a dice roll would prove more effective in my case (it was Gameweek 1 when my captain last scored!)

I made what I thought would be some big moves last week, transferring out Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) and Mohammed Salah (£12.4m) for Wilson and Sadio Mané (£11.8m).

Although those moves left me with positive points, they didn’t exactly set the world alight the way I’d hoped and heading into future Gameweeks without Salah always fills me with nerves.

Gameweek 10 looks to be a tricky one to negotiate. I’m invested in five players from Burnley’s clash with Chelsea. Ruing the errors of my Gameweek 5 Wildcard, I also appear to still have two Norwich players in my squad including the injured Grant Hanley (£4.0m) who could easily have been a performing Diego Rico (4.2m) or Martin Kelly (£4.1m).

I’m holding the transfer this week hoping to get some flexibility for future Gameweeks

So, where to go from here? Well, I’m armed with one free transfer to ponder over, with my head telling me to hold and my heart urging me to hit that transfers tab and make yet more changes in an attempt to claw back my season. Patience is a virtue, but mine is wearing very thin right now. There’s absolutely nothing in the bank, so flexibility is at rock bottom right now.

Despite my front three providing absolutely nothing last weekend, I’m quite optimistic of their chances going into this Gameweek. The fixtures also look great for the midfield and I’m happy to play “King” John Lundstram (£4.6m) in defence, after regretfully benching his clean sheet last time out.

It’s the defence where options are most slim but one free transfer doesn’t provide much choice, so I’ll be holding for now and looking forward to the flexibility of two free transfers come next week. Hanley survives for now!

I’ve come to a point where I don’t expect my captain to deliver, but Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) is the chosen man this weekend with his home fixture and at least some midweek form to speak of.

Not particularly. Potentially still a long term hold for me, will have to decide if I want 2 Liverpool attackers with the blank incoming

The blank actually coincides with a nice run for City.

Triple Liverpool until GW17. And then ditch one of them for a City attacker, bench two Pool players and then they're back in GW19.

What do we think of Sterling's schedule:

    GW6: Sat 21st - Watford - Benched (0’)
    Tues 24th - Preston - Started (76’)
    GW7: Sat 28th - Everton - Started (86’)
    Tues 1st - Zagreb - Benched (34’)
    GW8: Sun 6th - Wolves - Started (90’)
    Fri 11th - Czech Rep - Started (90’)
    Mon 14th - Bulgaria - Started (76’)
    GW9: Sat 19th - Palace - Started (90’)
    Tues 22nd - Atalanta - Started (90’)
    GW10: Sat 26th - Villa
    Tues 29th: Southampton
    GW11: Sat 2nd - Southampton

Villa would be his fifth start & (give or take a few minutes in Bulgaria) fifth 90 minutes in 15 days

It's so crazy that people think professional athletes are due a rest after playing 4 games in two whole weeks!

Pep is not bullshitting when he says Sterling is fit and recovers excellently from games. Hes in his mid 20's for christ sake!!

If he is benched, it is ONLY because Pep made a tactical move for the game.

Pep duly obliged, benching him in the league, and starting him in the league cup

Can't decide what to do this week. 2 FTs and wildcard still, sitting at 9.6k.

Had planned to ship Kane for Vardy, I'm going to hold off a week on that. So it's either Pukki>Jimenez, or Cantwell>Dendoncker just to bank a bit of dough. Thoughts on Jimenez over Pukki?

I agree. If in doubt, sit tight.

And never, ever take hits to remove good players, just to bring in other good players. Rarely pays off. I only take the very occasional hit for injuries, bans etc. But with Lundstram on your bench this year, this shouldn't even be necessary.

I like it, I do think you should have 3 defenders starting usually though not 4. Especially this season.

If you could sneak Dilva into your team this week I thnk it will be very solid team.

It’s not bad mate, dont listen to these fools. I’d consider downgrading Auba > Vardy, this frees up a lot of money. Then Otamendi > TAA

Get Vardy, TAA, maybe CHO instead of Mount, Get Dilva (need at least double city attack for the next 2 games), Connolly instead of Greenwood, Someone better or cheaper than Cantwell.

Get rid of Maddison, Auba (Maybe... 2 blanks in 2), WIlson, Otamendi (shite and probably not nailed),

Oh and get only one playing keeper.

If I was WC now I'd be looking to triple Lpool ready for fixture swing. Thats either double def or mane and having Sterling as a place holder for Salah.

I dont like the Tomori and Soyuncu double up. Fixtures samey, also blocks you off from Chelsea attack triple up. Would consider a Wolves def.

I find Maddison flatters to deceive, would prefer Tielemans or Vardy.

Laca is back forcing Auba back wide, perhaps Vardy or Aguero if you can do it.

Newcastle fodder imo, ready for fix swing one of the mids.

      Sheff united keeper.

      Other than that, its sound.

Thanks to the higher ups at FFS for promoting FPL TopGuns (the podcast Luke and I started this season).

Would be nice to boost the viewcount. We are trying to make it a nice, have on in the background, type listen. Like two mates talking down the pub.

Would be great if anyone who hasn't listened could check it out and let us know what you think!
