De Bruyne the top 10k favourite for Gameweek 10 captaincy

Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) proved to be the most popular captain among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 10.

The Belgian was neck-and-neck with Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) in the latest Fantasy Football Scout poll – each player exchanging top-spot throughout the week.

In the end, Sterling just edged, finishing the build-up to Gameweek 10 with the support of 29.4% of voters, while de Bruyne had 28.7%.

However, the top 10k managers were considerably unequivocal in comparison, with the cheaper of the two players proving the more popular captain.

31% of managers inside the top 10k handed the armband to de Bruyne as Aston Villa prepare to come to the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

By contrast, Sterling, who arguably carries a greater threat of rotation compared to the other headline Manchester City assets, was backed by just 21.6% at this level.

After proving a favourite of the top 10k in recent weeks, Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) has dropped down to third place in the captaincy debate for managers at the top level.

That may have been influenced by his recent Gameweek 9 no show, although his 19.8% of captainers among the top 10k are probably encouraged by the fact that he’s had a rest in the last week and usually starts home matches.

Either way, we are expecting anyone who features from the beginning against Aston Villa to do well in Gameweek 10 – as those who read our recent Captain Sensible article will know.

In terms of the overall template in the top 10k, de Bruyne continues to consolidate his position as the most popular player.

His ownership at this level has now reached 77.4%, a gap of 11 percentage points compared to next most-fashionable John Lundstram (£4.6m).

Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) remains the most popular forward among the top 10k but Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) has dropped out of the top three.

He was in 38.3% of these squads for Gameweek 9 but has been replaced by Jamie Vardy (£9.1m), who contributed to a massive win at Southampton on Friday night.

Interestingly, Pukki and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) are still trusted by the wider world of FPL.

Also pertinent is the fact that de Bruyne is the third-most popular midfielder when the lower-ranked managers are taken into account.

Back to the top 10k, Aguero’s popularity has also dipped from 36.1% to 33.5% but he does face a favourable match-up this weekend.

Bournemouth appear to have been turned to for a source of budget defensive investment.

Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) was the fifth-most popular defender for Gameweek 9, but he has been replaced by Diego Rico (£4.2m) ahead of the Cherries trip to Watford.

Fantasy managers at the top level appear to be eyeing up Wolves’ favourable fixtures.

They face Newcastle this weekend, before travelling to Arsenal, hosting Aston Villa and facing Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.

Naturally, Liverpool and Manchester City are the teams using up most of the slots in squads among the top 10k.

However, Wolves are sat in second place with an average of 1.8 of their players in top 10k squads.

Finally, an update on the chip usage among managers at this level.

47.4% of these have now used their Wildcards, which understandably remains the most deployed of the chips.

The Triple Captain has been spent by 25.5%, 13.7% have used the Free Hit and 13.9% the Bench Boost.

    A. Aguero and Tammy
    B. Vardy and Auba/Kane

Seems like a no brainer to go for B but it'll cost me a hit. Exact money if I choose Auba but 0.2m spare to wait for Kane.

I don't want to be rude but I have to say 'no brainer' is the most over used phrase in FPL. I can remember last season when a member of the Scoutcast said bringing in Isaac Success (!) was a 'no brainer' , enough said

        Hahaha. Don't remember that.

I have KDB, Mendy, Alonso and Mount so still have plenty City and Chelsea cover. Maybe time to get some other teams in.

Off to a flyer this season. Was 1k before that game and about 9k now. I can see it plumetting if Vardy Leicester keep doing well as he will have high ownership.

Tonight was rather exceptional partially due to the sending off and the fact that Southampton gave up after 10 mins. You can't legislate for that and "the risk" was heavily accentuated by tonight's circumstances.

Don't ruin it for all these captain hindsights.

Anyone owning lots of Leicester are obviously wise FPL wizards. It isn't that they majorly lucked out at all...

Pretty clear really. Every time a game like tonight happens people come out the woodwork as if it was obviously going to happen.

A record for the entire top flight of football history was set, today was an even bigger fluke then all the other flukey large haul results.

There is no shame in being happy that you lucked out. FPL is largely about luck as tonight shows

I planned to get him in gw7 and I did. Vardy is their main man, LEI are second, and they are playing well.

You're all acting as though everyone who owns Vardy has no idea what they are doing. He averages 170 points a season and have been very consistent. He's a good pick (outside of this game). This game was a bonus, I can admit that, but everyone is sh!ting on Vardy like he hasn't put up big scores before. This isn't Hayden getting a hattrick, this is 10 game in a row scoring Jamie Vardy.

Hardly "luck" is it? Teams play against 10 men all the time but don't score 9 goals. Maybe Leicester are just a really good team this year and having their players is a pretty good idea?

They are in 2nd - great fixtures as of gw 7. If you got them in you made a nicely calculated move. I think everyone hear recognizes that LEI won't score 9 every week but scoring goals and getting points isn't abnormal for Vardy.

Only a matter of time for Perez.

Last season it took him half the season before he got going and then he was brilliant. I guess that's why Leicester bought him and why he was so hyped here pre season. I kinda wish Man Utd went for him.

I've read this a few times now. Palace are certainly a defensively minded team, but they've kept 2 clean sheets in the past 8 gameweeks and Vardy can score against anyone. I wouldn't expect him to go crazy again like tonight, still I wouldn't hang about getting him in regardless of who he was playing.

Palace as a defensive prospect are akin to Sheffield United and Burnley in my eyes. You'd probably have been equally advised to hold off Vardy for those fixtures, but he scored in each game and picked up 2 bonus points both times. I know that doesn't mean he'll do the same again, but it just shows he scores goals against gritty teams. This Leicester side will make chances against anyone and Vardy will more often than not be the one trying to put them away. Get him while he's hot.

Good moves, I reckon. It's an odd one because I wouldn't ordinarily be in a rush to get rid of Maddi or Wilson, but CHO and Vardy are two of the most electric attacking players in the game right now and if you'd dithered you'd probably have missed out on points and be paying a fair bit more for the two of them (or just been priced out). Good luck with it.

    Leaves me with:

    Pope
    Soyuncu | Tomori | Lundstram | Rico
    Salah | Sterling | Mane | KdB | Mount
    Vardy

    Button | Connolly | Greenwood | Reid*

    Should I? Shan't I?

*Reid there just to afford the move (0.1 short otherwise!)

    Thanks

Maddison playing so deep today feel he should have gotten more points for the clean sheet and due some save points too
