Budget defenders the real winners of Watford’s draw with Bournemouth

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Ben Foster x3 (£4.8m), Nathan Aké x2 (£4.9m), Craig Cathcart x1 (£4.4m), Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.5m)

Watford and Bournemouth played out a lively 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road that saw the home side extend their winless run to ten games.

Fantasy Premier League managers may also be increasingly concerned about the Cherries’ recent goal drought.

However, there does appear to have been a significant improvement for both Watford and Bournemouth in defence, offering up some potentially viable budget options.

Wilson has now blanked in three consecutive matches

Eddie Howe’s side have now failed to score in three consecutive league games as the early-season form of Callum Wilson (£8.0m) continues to feel a long time ago.

The England international delivered attacking returns in each of the first seven Gameweeks of 2019/20 but has now blanked in the last three – two of those favourable meetings with Norwich and Watford.

Wilson’s striking partner Josh King (£6.3m), who was benched for Gameweek 9, was restored to the starting line-up but looked a shadow of his former self too.

The former Blackburn Rovers man, who has scored two goals and registered three assists so far this season, now has just two attacking returns since Gameweek 6.

Fraser was relatively lively but could not carve a breakthrough for his side

Ryan Fraser (£7.1m) and Arnaut Danjuma (£5.8m), making his first league start of the campaign, did their best to add some width to the 4-4-2 formation but could not serve up the goods.

Howe stated his concern post-match at his side’s lack of goals in recent weeks.

“Keeping a clean sheet away from home is positive, but having our third game without scoring is certainly a negative. We don’t normally struggle to score but today at least we did not struggle to create chances.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth now have a testing run of fixtures over the next seven Gameweeks, in which they face four of last season’s top-six.

Whether Wilson and King can be considered worthy of investment after having blanked against relegation candidates Norwich and Watford remains to be seen.

Next week’s clash against Manchester United could be a make-or-break occasion for those managers in ownership of either of the Cherries’ attacking duo.

Rico went close to getting more attacking returns for Bournemouth but did pick up a yellow card for his troubles

Perhaps Fantasy managers should start turning their attention to the other end of Bournemouth’s squad as they kept a second successive clean sheet in Gameweek 10.

This highlights, in particular, the value of Diego Rico (£4.2m), who impressed against Watford and could have added to his attacking returns, as he continues to share corner-taking duties with Fraser.

The left-back unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the first half, forcing a save out of Ben Foster (£4.8m).

Gerard Deulofeu was paired with Roberto Pereyra in a two-man strike-force

It must be said though that Bournemouth were helped in this latest clean sheet by a continued lack of cutting edge from Watford.

The Hornets should have arguably gone in front after Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) missed a golden opportunity to assert an early level of control over the visitors.

Quique Sanches Flores’ side continued to look lively throughout the afternoon’s fixture, with Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) striking the post directly from a corner too.

This was the sixth time this season that Watford have failed to score in the league this season, with their five goals scored the joint-lowest of any team in the division, level with Newcastle.

Janmaat’s price and attacking station are worth monitoring

Despite the Hornets’ lack of goals, Flores can take solace in the fact his side are seemingly displaying an increased sense of defensive resilience following their humbling at the hands of Manchester City last month.

Since that 8-0 demolition, Watford have conceded just three goals in four games, suggesting that some of their defensive options, many of whom have depreciated in price, could be worth considering.

Another promising performance from Daryl Janmaat (£4.3m) in the right wing-back position of Flores’ 3-5-2 system should keep him on our Watchlists for now.

Adam Masina (£4.3m) was deployed on the left but may lose his place to Jose Holebas (£4.7m) when he returns from suspension.

The manager confirmed he was pleased with his side’s defensive performance:

“We had our chances, we did not concede goals and we had a good team spirit and this is really good for the future. Defending well is a good base, but I can feel when we are on the opposition’s box the players are still a little bit nervous and they can sometimes take bad decisions. I think the first win is getting closer, the difference with the other teams is not so big and I’m really confident for the future.” – Quique Sanchez Flores

Watford’s injury woes continued right from the off against Bournemouth. Tom Cleverley (£4.9m) was forced to leave the pitch after just 10 minutes with a suspected ankle problem, Will Hughes (£5.5m) replacing him.

Fantasy interest in Cleverley is unlikely to be high but Hughes might be worthy of monitoring given his potential for attacking returns in the past.

Watford XI (3-5-2): Foster; Kabasele, Dawson, Cathcart; Masina (Foulquier 73′) Chalobah (Gray 57′) Cleverley (Hughes 10′), Doucouré, Janmaat; Pereyra, Deulofeu.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico, Aké, S Cook, Smith; Danjuma (H.Wilson 64′) Billing, Lerma, Fraser; J King, C Wilson (Solanke 74′).

Good position to be in for a change, 2 FTs and unsure how to use them.

I could try to do Auba, Sterling and Cresswell -> Rashford, Salah and Robbo over the next few weeks as fixtures turn.

0.0 in the bank, still unsure what to this week.

    Pope Heaton
    TAA Cresswell Soy Tomori Rico
    Sterling KDB Mount Ceballos Cantwell
    Auba Vardy Abraham

What more can Mount do to convince people to keep him?

The CHO bandwagon didn't even last a week and Pulisic has struggled for minutes.

      High risk move.

    CHO + Wilson +Tammy > Mount/Pulisic/ + Vardy + Connolly -4?

    Thanks

Do what fits your team structure better. You don't want to be taking many hits if any.

For example it would be a pain for me to get TAA and Robbo but it's much easier for me to get Salah and Mane.

Considering Otamendi and Haller to Mendy and Connolly. Gives me the funds to do Mahrez to KDB/Manè the following week.

Anyone rethinking their strategy this year?

Careful, thought out transfers hadn't worked, a WC and an 8 point bit hasn't worked. Nothing I do seems to be working this year (I'll be lucky to dent 500k this week), so it's time for a radical rethink. I'm adopting a strategy that's risky, but potentially rewarding. I've upgraded my dead 4.0 to Chilwell, and in the coming game weeks I'm going to rotate Connolly, Lundstram, Pereira and Chilwell, and potentially even Mount/Tammy on occasion. It means some weeks I'll be benching best part of £2-5m more than is considered optimal.

The last couple of weeks I've brought in a cheap-er player with form and a better fixture, had money left ITB and made a net points gane. So I'm just going to step that up. High risk, but high reward if you do correctly call the blank weeks for the costlier players and the cheaper players return something. Essentially stepping up the differential game, but in the sense of rotation, instead of ownership

Can someone please answer me a simple question?

I see a lot of people on here talking about Team Value. So what exactly is the advantage of having a high Team Value? As I understand it, having a high Team Value does not automatically give you more points, so why do people bang on about its importance so much?

I'm probably being really thick here, what am I missing?

Increases the spending budget for your wc and future transfers as you’re essentially ‘cashing in’ on the value your players gained from price rises

It is a strange one, as the two above have suggested it is perceived as an advantage to when you play your Wildcard. However, the players you own will have gone up because they're doing well, so it's unlikely you'd want to sell and 'cash in' anyway.

Got that, so Pukki would be a good example this season - if you timed it right you could have sold him at a high price, locking in the profit and increase your budget for future transfers. Simple really, sorry for being thick!

The hope is by the TV builders that as the season progresses that it will give one more wiggle room in the transfer market and that £ can be converted into points.

Points is the important thing and if you can build some value in your team as well it is a nice bonus.

Ok I get it now - it's simply a way to increase your purchasing power. I was being thick. Sorry folks.

I think overall good TV value though is more likely to imply individual instances of good purchases, that can be directly beneficial

Buying KdB at 9.5 or 10.1 for instance. If KdB gets badly injured and a transfer is forced then those who bought early will have a 0.3 advantage with respect to the particular transfer

It's Sales Value (SV) that is important - not TV .. SV is what you actually get if you sell all your players

e.g. my TV is 104.8 but if I sell all my players I get my SV, 102.8, to spend

Fellow Kun owners (and GW10 cappers)....

It feels like the choice by next weekend will be
        1) Keep, Captain and pray to the FPL powers that be
        2) Get rid with something like Kun, Dendo > Connolly, Sterling

I think I may just go with choice 1 regardless for GW11 (unless somehow Pep gives us his first ever clear message that he won’t play/ start vs SOU). Nothing much to lose anymore 😉

Logic tells you that you can not get rid of Aguero before Southampton, but I applied that same logic for this wknd. I will wait to see what the bald fraud does for the meaningless midweek cup game. Suffered the drop last night but won't put up with a double drop.......

Yeh obv will see what happens midweek.

Even in Pep’s land of the insane, you would think that if Kun doesn’t play more than 15-20 mins midweek that he finally starts vs SOU

There’s literally no logic to Pep though.

I picked him this week because he had never started on the bench at home in the PL, except after injury, since 2014.

Didn’t stop Pep breaking that 5 year stat...
