Budget defenders the real winners of Watford’s draw with Bournemouth

Watford 0-0 Bournemouth

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Ben Foster x3 (£4.8m), Nathan Aké x2 (£4.9m), Craig Cathcart x1 (£4.4m), Aaron Ramsdale x1 (£4.5m)

Watford and Bournemouth played out a lively 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road that saw the home side extend their winless run to ten games.

Fantasy Premier League managers may also be increasingly concerned about the Cherries’ recent goal drought.

However, there does appear to have been a significant improvement for both Watford and Bournemouth in defence, offering up some potentially viable budget options.

Wilson has now blanked in three consecutive matches

Eddie Howe’s side have now failed to score in three consecutive league games as the early-season form of Callum Wilson (£8.0m) continues to feel a long time ago.

The England international delivered attacking returns in each of the first seven Gameweeks of 2019/20 but has now blanked in the last three – two of those favourable meetings with Norwich and Watford.

Wilson’s striking partner Josh King (£6.3m), who was benched for Gameweek 9, was restored to the starting line-up but looked a shadow of his former self too.

The former Blackburn Rovers man, who has scored two goals and registered three assists so far this season, now has just two attacking returns since Gameweek 6.

Fraser was relatively lively but could not carve a breakthrough for his side

Ryan Fraser (£7.1m) and Arnaut Danjuma (£5.8m), making his first league start of the campaign, did their best to add some width to the 4-4-2 formation but could not serve up the goods.

Howe stated his concern post-match at his side’s lack of goals in recent weeks.

“Keeping a clean sheet away from home is positive, but having our third game without scoring is certainly a negative. We don’t normally struggle to score but today at least we did not struggle to create chances.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth now have a testing run of fixtures over the next seven Gameweeks, in which they face four of last season’s top-six.

Whether Wilson and King can be considered worthy of investment after having blanked against relegation candidates Norwich and Watford remains to be seen.

Next week’s clash against Manchester United could be a make-or-break occasion for those managers in ownership of either of the Cherries’ attacking duo.

Rico went close to getting more attacking returns for Bournemouth but did pick up a yellow card for his troubles

Perhaps Fantasy managers should start turning their attention to the other end of Bournemouth’s squad as they kept a second successive clean sheet in Gameweek 10.

This highlights, in particular, the value of Diego Rico (£4.2m), who impressed against Watford and could have added to his attacking returns, as he continues to share corner-taking duties with Fraser.

The left-back unleashed a powerful shot from distance in the first half, forcing a save out of Ben Foster (£4.8m).

Gerard Deulofeu was paired with Roberto Pereyra in a two-man strike-force

It must be said though that Bournemouth were helped in this latest clean sheet by a continued lack of cutting edge from Watford.

The Hornets should have arguably gone in front after Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) missed a golden opportunity to assert an early level of control over the visitors.

Quique Sanches Flores’ side continued to look lively throughout the afternoon’s fixture, with Gerard Deulofeu (£6.1m) striking the post directly from a corner too.

This was the sixth time this season that Watford have failed to score in the league this season, with their five goals scored the joint-lowest of any team in the division, level with Newcastle.

Janmaat’s price and attacking station are worth monitoring

Despite the Hornets’ lack of goals, Flores can take solace in the fact his side are seemingly displaying an increased sense of defensive resilience following their humbling at the hands of Manchester City last month.

Since that 8-0 demolition, Watford have conceded just three goals in four games, suggesting that some of their defensive options, many of whom have depreciated in price, could be worth considering.

Another promising performance from Daryl Janmaat (£4.3m) in the right wing-back position of Flores’ 3-5-2 system should keep him on our Watchlists for now.

Adam Masina (£4.3m) was deployed on the left but may lose his place to Jose Holebas (£4.7m) when he returns from suspension.

The manager confirmed he was pleased with his side’s defensive performance:

“We had our chances, we did not concede goals and we had a good team spirit and this is really good for the future. Defending well is a good base, but I can feel when we are on the opposition’s box the players are still a little bit nervous and they can sometimes take bad decisions. I think the first win is getting closer, the difference with the other teams is not so big and I’m really confident for the future.” – Quique Sanchez Flores

Watford’s injury woes continued right from the off against Bournemouth. Tom Cleverley (£4.9m) was forced to leave the pitch after just 10 minutes with a suspected ankle problem, Will Hughes (£5.5m) replacing him.

Fantasy interest in Cleverley is unlikely to be high but Hughes might be worthy of monitoring given his potential for attacking returns in the past.

Watford XI (3-5-2): Foster; Kabasele, Dawson, Cathcart; Masina (Foulquier 73′) Chalobah (Gray 57′) Cleverley (Hughes 10′), Doucouré, Janmaat; Pereyra, Deulofeu.

Bournemouth XI (4-4-2): Ramsdale; Rico, Aké, S Cook, Smith; Danjuma (H.Wilson 64′) Billing, Lerma, Fraser; J King, C Wilson (Solanke 74′).

In pain because of all the people who will now transfer him in because he got fouled a couple times and got mega points for it. Especially suffering because some will think he’s even a viable starter.

Really appreciate some advice on this.

    Pope
    VVD Otamendi Rico
    Salah Sterling KDB Mount
    Abraham Pukki Jimenez

    Button Lundstram Cantwell Kelly

    0.7m 1ft

Really tempted to jump to vardy (chasing this last week's points), in which case it would be Pukki and jiminez to vardy and Connolly.

Or just do Otamendi to mendy?

Given their fixtures, it's possibly worth considering a blades double up in defence with Lundstram now.

In the next 9 games (5 at home) only one, Spurs away, would seem to be daunting. Plus, we do have a bench to use.

Their defence is offering superb value and more importantly delivering points.

O'Connell (4.5!) and Stevens (5.0) are nailed and each averaging 5 points or so in the last 5 games, which included matches against Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton.

The other option of course is Henderson (4.6) but like me you might be slow to use a transfer on a keeper, if you don't already have him.

    Good luck.

So this is my team now:

    Ryan Heaton
    Robbo Soy Lundy Boly Mings
    Salah Sterling Madders CHO Cantwell
    Auba Tammy Wickham

I have 1 free transfer and nothing in the bank.

CHO is looking like a failed investment. I could sell him now and go for another LEI player. I don't like tripling up but I may have to. Obviously my priority is to replace Boly - I'll probably do Rico.

I'm kind of stuck, what should I do?

  8. Dybala10
    • 6 Years

    Boly & Auba > Maguire & Kane?

Looking at the fixture ticker I have cover for the main teams and would like to make the most of those United fixtures.

Issue is I need 0.2 to facilitate this and if Auba blanks again today then I will be worried. I know Spurs aren't great either but good fixtures ahead. Alternative is downgrade to Rashford and get TAA and have double Liverpool defence.

    Any ideas?

Morning campers. would you down grade mount or Madison to upgrade Wilson to vardy?! Really struggling with this one. Eg

Downgrade Madison to tielmans, Perez, Cho, Mcginn,

    1. Pacer.
      • 9 Years
      4 years, 5 months ago

      Yes

I would go with tielemens. Simply because he is the heart of their team. You know you won't have to give him a second thought and would effectively be playing with 10 players to worry about. Sometimes that's worth its weight in gold over faffing about using FTs trying to catch streaker, low/mid price players

      1. Pacer.

Good advice. He plays every game right. Just feels weird taking out Madison after an 8 pointer. But vardy is real deal I think. Alternative is Wilson to jiminez. I have 2 transfers btw.

I'd hold and see how Wolves do today. Wilson is prone to luls and streaks and I sense (hope) a streak may be coming in the next couple of GWs for him.

Doesn't really matter. All that matters is how often they get returns and tielemens has the same LEI record as Madison and has consistently been a goalscorer

Just as I posted my comment below, I saw you'd asked a similar thing. I'm in the same boat as I've always thought that chasing points is bad practice, also got Vardy's supposed 'bad underlying stats' in the back of my mind putting me off...think Maddison to Tielemans is the only viable option really?

      1. Pacer.
        • 9 Years

Ignore Vardy stats. He's often busted the regression assumption. He scored a dozen games straight getting about 2 chances a game

Yeah leic could sneak top four this season and of this was totenham on this sort of streak we wouldn't be thinking twice. I think I'm gonna do it just annoyed I didn't do it last night as I could have tomori to Kelly but now 0.1 short

What's the thinking behind it being crazy to ditch Madison, bearing in mind there are 2 midfielders and two defenders on approximately the same points for a lot less money

Maddison has consistently flattered to deceive

I guess Madison to tielmans is a bit side ways and Wilson to vardy you can just see that back firing with Wilson scoring and vardy not... But feels worthwhile risk given Wilson's fixtures are turning big style

Aguero to Connolly, upgrade CO CHO and Dendo with the 7.6m you get from that, play 3-5-2.

Your defence is fine, keepers OK, Vardy and Abra fine. You don't need to tweak a lot.

True, I’m thinking maybe just get rid of Ota or Aurier. Potentially both but could be wise saving a transfer...

Nah, do it! Connolly looked class, Maddison (bar the freekick) was second fiddle to Tielemans the whole game against Southampton.

Well Maddison is a very average pick. Connolly is bench fodder who is looking like being a real source of points

Ive got 2FTs and would like to sort my team out a bit. Wilson, Otamendi, Wichkham & Mcginn possibly on the chopping block. got .6 ITB. Could need some advice

      Pope ( Button )

      TAA - Lundstram - Soyoncu - Tomori ( Otamendi )

      Sterling - Salah - KDB - Mount ( Mcginn )

      Abraham - Wilson ( Wickham )

      A : Wilson & Otamendi > Vardy & 4.7 Def
      B : Wilson & Otamendi > Connolly & Robbo
      C : Wilson & Otamendi > Jimenez & Mendy
      D : Wilson & Mcginn > Jimenez & Tielemans

Left FPL about a month. Need some opinions on the current state of FPL. My team as per below:

      Pope Button

      Otamendi Soy Rico Lundy Kelly

      Salah KdB Son Mount Cantwell

      Aguero Tammy Pukki

      2FT, 0ITB

      1. Aguero to go for Auba/Vardy?

      2. Son to Sterling?

      3. Other opinions are much appreciated. Thanks.

Great stuff. Think I had 6.6 when you had 6.7.
