How Aubameyang fared on Lacazette’s return to the Arsenal starting XI

Arsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Sokratis (£5.0m), David Luiz (£5.8m) | Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m), Jordan Ayew (£5.1m)
  • Assists: Granit Xhaka (£5.3m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) | Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m), James McArthur (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Milivojevic x3, Ayew, McArthur x2

A disallowed goal, a VAR-influenced penalty decision, a set-to between Arsenal’s captain and their fans, a Matteo Guendouzi (£4.7m) rugby tackle, a mass brawl and a two-goal comeback: Sunday’s match at the Emirates was perhaps the most eventful of Gameweek 10.

From a Fantasy perspective, Alexandre Lacazette‘s (£9.3m) return to the Arsenal starting XI for the first time in the league since September 1 was the main talking point.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) has played centrally for the Gunners in the France international’s two-month absence but Lacazette’s Premier League comeback saw Aubameyang move to the left flank to accommodate his fellow premium FPL forward.

A fair number of Aubameyang’s owners will find his move to a wide-left position hard to swallow, given his hefty price tag.

Then there are those who will be undeterred by Lacazette’s availability, pointing to the fact the pair co-existed last season (be it as a bona fide strike duo or with the Gabon international out wide) and that attacking returns for Aubameyang still arrived regularly enough with the two of them in the same starting XI.

The classic fence-sitter’s position is that both arguments are valid.

Aubameyang will continue to rack up the goals and assists and more than likely be towards the top of the FPL forwards’ points list come the end of the campaign, no matter where he is stationed.

There is no question, though, that a central role would be a big help in maximising his Fantasy potential.

Aubameyang has made a habit out of disappearing for large chunks of a match, only to pop up with a goal out of nowhere, so his anonymity against Palace on Sunday was nothing new.

Being played on the left flank, even if he is not a touchline-hugging Dwight McNeil (£6.0m) type, does perhaps make gilt-edged opportunities harder to come by, though.

Aubameyang had only one penalty box touch in Gameweek 10, with both of his shots coming from outside the area.

Touch heatmaps for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (left) and Alexandre Lacazette (right) in Arsenal v Crystal Palace

Lacazette, by contrast, was in the thick of things, forcing an excellent low stop from Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) early on, seeing a header from a corner saved in the second half and then striking the woodwork from a narrow angle soon after.

In the 256 minutes of pitch-time that Lacazette and Aubameyang have shared this season, the Gabon international has only had one shot in the box.

We’re still talking about a very small data sample in 2019/20, of course, and there are plenty of appealing fixtures ahead for the pair and Nicolas Pepe (£9.3m) to develop more of an understanding and become a potent front three.

It was from two of Pepe’s corners that Arsenal raced into a 2-0 lead: Sokratis (£5.0m) breaking the deadlock after a spot of penalty-box head tennis and then David Luiz (£5.8m) doubling the Gunners’ advantage following a Lacazette flick-on.

Sokratis thought he had grabbed a winner late in the game, only for his strike to be controversially scratched off after VAR intervention.

Arsenal didn’t create a massive amount from open play, however, with Dani Ceballos (£5.4m) again below-par and Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) turning in a display that led to the Arsenal fans cheering his substitution – the Switzerland midfielder reacting petulantly to the provocation.

Kieran Tierney (£5.4m) made his Arsenal league debut at full-back, looking fairly bright down the left flank without threatening to make any headlines with his contributions.

Arsenal’s defensive struggles are as well-documented as Tierney’s attacking attributes, however, and the Gunners let a two-goal lead slip when conceding to a Luka Milivojevic (£6.7m) penalty and a Jordan Ayew (£5.1m) header.

The penalty award, only given after the VAR had overruled the decision to penalise Wilfried Zaha (£6.7m) for a dive, and Sokratis’ disallowed goal clearly irked Unai Emery, who said:

For me VAR is positive and we need VAR. But we need to manage that in the right way. At the moment, to us, it’s not working well. I think the team deserved to win this evening. We played with speed when they equalised. I can only be a little bit disappointed that we didn’t control the match better at 2-0, to make sure that we could get a good result.

Palace’s tricky fixture run still has another three or four matches to go (LEI | che | LIV| bur) but they are giving us some encouragement ahead of the swing in Gameweek 15.

Defending has been the strong suit of Roy Hodgson’s side this season but for once it was their attacking assets who caught the eye, with Zaha, in particular, causing Calum Chambers (£4.4m) problems down the left flank and going close to netting a winner late on.

Ayew, meanwhile, made it four goals in eight Gameweeks and now averages exactly five points per game over that period.

The fit-again Martin Kelly (£4.1m) returned to the matchday squad but was only among the substitutes, so it appears that the budget FPL defender’s 25%+ ownership now has to wait on an injury to one of James Tomkins (£5.0m) or Gary Cahill (£4.5m) before their cut-price Palace defender is a starter again.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Chambers, Sokratis, Luiz, Tierney (Kolasinac 75′); Guendouzi, Xhaka (Saka 61′); Pepe, Ceballos, Aubameyang; Lacazette.

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Hennessey; Ward, Tomkins, Cahill, Van Aanholt; Kouyate (McCarthy 90′), Milijoevic, McArthur; Townsend, Ayew (Benteke 81′), Zaha.

Dunno, in two games without Boly this season they conceded 5 to Chelsea and 1 to Newcastle which is the equivalent of 5 to any team that can even vaguely attack.

Just go cheaper then, no need to spend all the cash.

Ouch. That hurts to see. Maybe we implemented it differently? Or differences in luck?

A lot of research went into my strategy before and during the season though, and I actually have a balance between bargain hunting and upside chasing... But still, the unexpected Pukki and Vardy hat tricks helped, I guess. I can't take credit for those

Probably not as much research, and I gave 0 f**** about Tammy out of personal spite to a friend, so that was around 0,5-0,8 in TV Lost. Then I havent made a right choice of a goalscoring captain since GW 1 Salah.

Perez has been a streaky, confidence based player for years. All he ever needed was that first goal, even if it was in Carabao Cup. He's had the goal now

But if the punt fails, it's an easy sell to so many other options. Pulisic is an expensive punt that affects other areas of your team when compared with what could be done with the extra funds on a Perez punt

is it worth doing Pukki (bri, WAT) >> Vardy (cry, ARS) (-4)? so confused
    - expect pukki to drop 0.2 by saturday and vardy to rise by 0.2m so thats a 0.4m swing.
    - typically the highest scoring player doesnt do well the following gw
    - Pukki has the better immediate fixtures but no form

That second point is entirely superstitious and does not in any way predict the next event

Alonso was the highest-scoring player in GW9. He had 6 points in GW10. And this is just the first example I checked for

      Sterling in GW1/2, Pukki GW3/4...

A good player who happens to be the highest-scoring in one week can score well in a good fixture the next week, even if he isn't the highest-scoring the second time in a row

Are we seeing Vardy with slightly tinted windows?

Both games he scored a hatrick the opposition had a player sent off early

I’m not saying he’s a bad option but as I own Maddison already do I seriously need to double up?

It's your team, so "we" aren't seeing Vardy with ...

Anybody who ignored Tammy after those three hauls as "we" rushed for him would be feeling smug now

There are no crystal balls involved. Pick your team based on who you feel would score the most points, not what "we" do

Vardy was a stand out pick at the start of the season and still is. Focal point of attack in a good team, plays 90 mins every game with no risk of rotation, on pens.

    Lampard on CHO:

"Since he has come back on the pitch, I’ve been saying, sometimes speaking to the outside world, that he can do better because I feel like he is a player who will react well to those because I only want the best for him.

"I don’t like to mention other players but I think Raheem Sterling is such a good role model for a young English player in roughly the same position to see the development and for me that is hard work behind the scenes that Raheem has brought into his game in all senses.

"And I want that from Callum and that starts with what he does day-in, day-out in every bit of training cannot be lost on him. He has to get every ounce out of it and listen to me and listen to the staff. And his teammates because that will drive him as well."

Nailed on imo or at least preferred starter. Visioning him being a Sterling type of players means fantasy pts are to be expected.

Ayews returns are pretty sick give his price, he is like the forward version of Lundstram. I might go there for a Connolly, Rico, Ayew rotation (playing 4 or 5 at the back)

Would you WC this lot ? I'm tempted although likely to wait for mid week games to play out before making my decision.

        Henderson, 4.0
        Lundy, Soyuncu, Montoya, Trent, Prodl
        Sterling, KDB, CHO, Saka, Cantwell
        Aguero, Auba, Tammy

I probably would because it looks like Cantwell is about to lose his place. That's Saka, Prodl, Cantwell as non-starters and Kun, CHO as rotation risks.

Yeah that's my thinking, I'll wait and monitor minutes but tempted to pull the trigger and switch up the team. My only hesitancy is that a few of those players you mentioned are merely bench fodder and 2 frees can help a lot next week and could mean avoiding WC.

kun and cho were never not rotation risks but presumably perceived as good value in spite of this no?

I agree but you wouldn't want them with 3 non-starters also in the squad, if you're unlucky you could have a terrible week.

I have to admit I thought CHO would be close to nailed in that team once he returned to fill fitness, time will tell how that plays out. I got Kun last week for the arm band instead of getting Vardy and paid the price big time, but yeah I knew the risks and took the punt.

It looks like after the international break I need to pick between this two comboes:

        A) Salah + 6.1m defender (I got Lundstram, TAA, Rico, Tomori)
        B) Mane+ Van Djiik

        Thoughts please?

This probably wont be popular but thoughts on
Auba and Mount to Connolly/Ayew and Salah -4?

Think Salah could start going on his run of points now and want to start getting some Pool attack back.

        Pope
        TAA Mendy Lunds Soyuncu Rico
        Sterling KDB Mount Yarmolenko Cantwell
        Auba Tammy Pukki

its the same argument as owning TAA or Robbo tho, cs doesnt seem likely but you're in it for attackign returns. And Mendy has that in spades when in top form. For 5.9? He is a bargain and I assume will be nailed, he will free up Sterling so much, Sterling and Mendy combo will be sick

I agree with you with Connolly and Salah.

But I think you should wait after the internationl gmw.

Auba got better fixtures combined the next two and Salah is actually going down in price so you are not forced to do anything. You will also avoid the hint.

Would not transfer out Mount though

some are, depending how you want to play. Likes of KDB, TAA, Robbo, Lunds probably Rico. Unless they lose minutes, massively lose form or struck down by injury. You dont need move any of them on

        From GW12 and onwards. A, B or C?

        A) 6.4 forward, Salah, Sterling (3-5-2)
        B) Kane, Salah, Martial (3-5-2)
        C) Firmino, Vardy, Sterling/Mane (3-4-3)

Leaning towards B. Mainly because of City's bad fixtures. KDB will stay in the team ofc

Vardy is essential for this run

Pool have great fixtures after city - double up on attack is the way forwards

City fixtures turn - Kdb is sufficient
