Klopp’s injury update on Salah and van Dijk after Liverpool edge Spurs

Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Jordan Henderson (£5.4m), Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) | Harry Kane (£10.8m)
  • Assists: Sadio Mane (£11.8m) | Son Heung-min (£9.7m)
  • Bonus: Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m) x3, Henderson x2, Kane x1

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) owners are back where they were a fortnight ago, with the Egyptian flagged in Fantasy Premier League with an ankle injury.

Sunday was a rollercoaster day for the 30% or so of FPL managers who have kept faith with the premium midfielder amid the mass exodus of recent weeks.

With his absence from Friday’s training ground images already causing concern, there were the usual baseless rumours circulating in the hours before kick-off which suggested that the Egypt international was set to miss the visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

The speculation amounted to nothing and Salah resumed his place in Liverpool’s front three, going on to register his first league goal since Gameweek 5 to hand the Reds all three points.

Just when all was right with the world again, Salah hit the deck in the game’s closing stages and was swiftly substituted, with the Egyptian walking gingerly from the field and subsequently spotted with an ice pack on his ankle.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed after full-time that it was the same issue that has blighted his star winger for the last three weeks, saying first to Sky Sports:

Mo is the same ankle, it just gets sore the longer the game goes on. It’s not a massive issue, that will disappear one day, but it’s still a bit there at the moment.

Asked about the Egyptian’s injury in his post-match press conference, Klopp added:

It’s good. But the longer the game goes, the more you get a bit tired, could get a knock on it, then you feel it more. Makes no sense to try to push it through because we had other players, options to change. No, nothing serious.

Salah wasn’t the only well-owned Liverpool asset to be “yellow-flagged” in FPL after the conclusion of Sunday’s game, with Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) also picking up a knock.

There doesn’t seem to be too much concern over the 45.1%-owned Dutchman, however, with Klopp saying after the game:

Virgil, I think got a dead leg which will be fine, it’s painful but it should be fine.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) had come into this match as a slight doubt himself but shook off the virus that caused him to miss the win over Genk to keep up his ever-present league record in 2019/20.

It was a frustrating afternoon for owners of Alexander-Arnold, van Dijk and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m), who saw their clean sheet wiped out within 47 seconds when Harry Kane (£10.8m) nodded Spurs ahead.

No club has shipped fewer goals than Liverpool this season but, by virtue of Klopp’s side conceding exactly once on eight separate occasions, only two teams (Spurs and Norwich City) have registered fewer clean sheets.

Given their otherwise respectable underlying defensive statistics, it seems only a matter of time before the Reds start to register shut-outs again.

Despite the clean sheet drought, Robertson and Alexander-Arnold are joint-third among FPL defenders for total points, mostly thanks to their endeavours at the other end of the pitch.

It was to be an infuriating match on that front, too, with Alexander-Arnold creating more chances than any other Premier League player in Gameweek 10 but ultimately blanking for the third game in a row, if we are to discount the bonus point picked up in the 2-1 win over Leicester.

Van Dijk and Sadio Mane (£10.8m) couldn’t convert the best of the headed opportunities that Alexander-Arnold supplied, while Roberto Firmino (£9.6m) failed to squeeze a second-half effort through the legs of the busy Paulo Gazzaniga (£4.4m) from the Liverpool right-back’s throw.

Just as Alexander-Arnold’s De Bruyne-esque deliveries went unrewarded, so did Robertson’s prominence in the final third.

The Scotland international wasn’t quite as productive as his opposite full-back but was a constant outlet down the left flank, getting into some threatening positions and producing an excellent cross that Firmino perhaps should have buried just after the interval.

Gazzaniga kept that effort out from the Brazilian and was to be a thorn in Liverpool’s side all afternoon, making a remarkable 12 saves over the course of the 90 minutes.

A smart double-stop from Salah and Firmino in the 27th minute was a sign of things to come, as Spurs’ backup goalkeeper went on to repel a van Dijk header, an Alexander-Arnold drive and numerous other decent chances that the Reds carved out.

After seven saves, Gazzaniga was finally beaten just after half-time when Jordan Henderson (£5.4m) half-volleyed in Liverpool’s equaliser.

While there was an element of frustration that there weren’t more attacking returns, owners of Mane (who won Liverpool’s decisive penalty), Salah and Firmino would have been consoled by the attacking manner of the Reds’ performance, particularly with a favourable fixture swing coming up.

Reflecting on the game, Klopp said:

We were in charge, we pushed them back, played really good football, created chances in the first and second half, super saves of the goalie of Tottenham – wow, what a game he had.

The first goal we scored, I loved because in other games maybe when the striker goes down and everybody is shouting for a penalty, there are maybe players around who switch off a little bit but Hendo was not bothered by that and finished that situation off. Really important, really nice.

The second goal is a sensational counter-press situation of Sadio; having the ball, losing it, losing it twice, coming in front of the opponent and then he kicks your calf, that is a super, super situation. We won it, we deserved it and I am really happy about the performance.

While Liverpool deserved their win, Spurs played their part in an absorbing encounter.

Son Heung-min (£9.7m) was desperately unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, first striking the post with a deflected effort in the first minute and then rattling the crossbar when rounding Alisson (£5.8m) just after the break.

The first of those efforts did, at least, result in a Fantasy assist as the rebound fell to Kane to nod Spurs in front.

The Lilywhites ceded a lot of possession but were a threat at either end of the game, with Kane overhitting a pass to Dele Alli (£8.4m) with the goal gaping, the otherwise poor Christian Eriksen (£8.7m) skewing a volley narrowly wide and Danny Rose (£5.4m) squandering a late chance.

Spurs have some fairly appealing fixtures coming up and they have looked better for the move to a flexible 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 over the last week, with Son maintaining his goal threat despite a move to the left flank.

Security of starts remains a concern regarding many of their Fantasy assets, though: nine different Spurs midfielders have started at least one league game this season, with the fit-again Giovani Lo Celso (£7.3m) another option to factor in on top of that.

Mauricio Pochettino hinted at further rotation in the weeks to come when talking specifically of substitute Tanguy Ndombele (£6.0m) after the game:

With 29 players in the squad, it’s so important to rotate and keep them all motivated to play. He played on Tuesday in the Champions League and I think Harry Winks was fresh to play.

That’s normal and what we need from players from the bench to make an impact. But of course, he’s doing good passes. He’s fresh. That’s normal. If it’s the opposite we have a problem.

The ever-present Kane, meanwhile, is one of the most “nailed” premium options in FPL but despite starting ten matches in a row, has still scored fewer points than any of the £10.0m+ options.

At the other end, Gazzaniga obviously appeals because of his budget price tag.

Save points look guaranteed – Spurs have allowed more shots on target than all teams bar Norwich this season – but clean sheets may be harder to come by: no Premier League club has fewer of those (one) in 2019/20.

The fairly awful displays of Rose and Serge Aurier (£4.8m) at full-back at Anfield on Sunday particularly highlighted their weaknesses in defence.

Rose will now be suspended for Gameweek 11 after collecting his fifth booking of the season.

Erik Lamela (£5.9m) missed out on the trip to Merseyside, meanwhile, with Pochettino saying ahead of kick-off:

He suffered a small problem with his thigh yesterday in training. This morning he was checked by the doctor and the decision was made that he couldn’t be involved. We hope it’s not a big issue.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3) Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum (Milner 77′); Salah (Gomez 84), Firmino (Origi 90′), Mane.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Gazzaniga; Aurier (Moura 83′), Alderweireld, Sanchez, Rose; Sissoko, Winks (Ndombele 62), Alli; Eriksen (Lo Celso 87), Son; Kane.

Agreed he should of, but he also should of got something against Bournemouth away, SHU and CP at home, but he didn’t! Vardy in the meantime has 30 points over those 3 games and Firmino goes against a weak villa defence.

Huge part of Arsenal fan base is so toxic it's making me sick, and it's been like this for years. That's why it pisses me off when they're throwing us all in the same basket. Booing your own captain? So classy. I could never do it, never.

Imagine listening to all swear words, reading comments on facebook/instagram/twitter how bad and useless you are, wishing you injuries/ilness, receiving death treaths - how low can people go?! And how long can a regular person hold all these emotions inside? It's only a matter of time before you explode. By the way, Arsenal "fans" deserve countless f*** offs. The same clowns treated Wenger like absolute trash after all he's done for the club in 22 years. We all knew that the next coach will have a difficult job and agendas aren't helping anyone. It's not looking good for Emery right now but hopefully he finds some solutions quickly.

Xhaka has been abused and insulted regularly since coming to London. Online, on the pitch, probably on the streets as well. Forget what his job and salary is. He's a human being, just imagine how he feels! I would've probably lost the plot too if you have to deal with the same crap week in week out. It's unsustainable if you're one of the scapegoats no matter if it's W/D/L. "Supporterts" pick and decide who they (dis)like and it's hard to change their minds. Weeks ago I've read interview with Mustafi (https://www.spiegel.de/sport/fussball/shkodran-mustafi-vom-fc-arsenal-ich-bin-zur-zielscheibe-geworden-a-1290317.html) who handled whole situation incredibly professional. Seems like decent fella too.
Mental health is so important. It all starts in the mind...

I believe that Granit is giving his best - if that's his level, okay, I can accept it. Players can always improve. Constructive critism is welcome in my opinion, sometimes it pushes you to another level. If the whole system and formation isn't suited to the most of the first team players' strenghts you really need to wonder what's manager doing and thinking. Changes are badly needed - now!

It's battle of opinions but I completely understand his reaction which the (big part of) crowd provoked in the first place with their stupid behaviour! It's not like these extra 10 seconds would've won us the match. Also don't blame VAR, don't blame referees. I try to believe that luck evens itself out over time. They had almost 100 minutes to beat them and failed miserably once again.
History - tradition - class, my ass.
    I stand with Xhaka.

I agree mostly, but as a captain of a former club I can tell you that the fans deserve better. You cannot carry on like a pork chop as Xhaka did and tell them to f**k off. His performances haven’t been up to scratch (even if it is to his full potential), but if you carry the club badge on your heart and sleeve you do not act like that. Period.

Firstly keep Kun for one more ideally. I'd be tempted to do Wilson to Connolly and then plan for big changes next week. Who is it you want? Sterling, Vardy?

How did your GW10 go? Were any of your players benched? Did you get any injuries? How did your bench perform? Did your captain return?

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 10 here:

Smooth was captaining my highest GW scorer for the first time this year (Sterling). Modest green arrow overall, lots of lads chipping in with steady 5-6 points. Unexpectedly, Gazzaniga was a smooth with his saves and bonus.

Rough was no Leicester except Soyuncu. Wilson and Otamendi trolling my team and TAA 1pter when it could have been so much more.

Rough - transferred out Kane (7) and Son (5) for a hit (-4)
Smooth - brought in Maupay (9) and Salah (7) so the hit broke even and my squad is better balanced going forward. Finished on 69(-4) with every midfielder/forward getting attacking points including Sterling (C). Up from around 800k to 500k.

Took the first hit of the season, Son + Pukki -> D.Silva + Rashford and gained 7 points.
Lascelles finally hauled, had been waiting for a couple of weeks for this.
      Usual suspects scored/assisted.
Digne's final nail in the coffin with a - 1.
Vardy VC should've been made the captain, a decent GW after two 30 pointer red arrow GW's.

Me: Kun (c), CHO as part of a Chelsea value triple which misfired, Boly injured, 1pt specials from TAA, Pope etc. 52.
Casual ml leader: Forgot the deadline and left armband on Vardy, bought in double Bournemouth defence who got bonus (ake/ramsdale) and a goal from Jonny. 89.

Rough; KDB from goal to assist, losing bonus points in the making, Auba fail even when i did the obvious move from Kun before latter gets rotated, Leicester 9-0 and got 14 points from Pereira and maddison. Mané misses sitter, TAA could have had a cricket score.. Boly gets injured so Lund from bench with 2 points.
Smooth; fpl nothing, Liverpool coming back to win was my only high this week. That was important to keep the gap at 6 point before City in gw12

Going Vardy and Maupay with Son in later in week, so guess Vardy will stop scoring now. Tempted to captain Maupay, Norwich is awful and Brighton very good home. Feels like a game that could be 5-3, with Brighton also playing advanced and open. Have made good captaincy calls every week but nothing goes so might as well just go with my gut.

Honestly think he could push for 30 in a single game if things fell freakishly right for him

A DFK, a long range thunderbasterd, an assist from open play, an assist from a corner, CS & MBP = 27

He must be terrifying for non owners, if there are any

With 3 blanks in a row and only averaging 4.3 points per game for a price of 7.2m (five sub 5.0m defenders are averaging more than that) he's pretty frustrating for owners too.

Does still have plenty of potential, but we need more clean sheets and assists from him than he has had so far, and soon. Hope he starts getting them before I give in to the temptation to sell him for someone cheaper (though he isn't the only defender who has been underperforming for me)!

Yep he is not boasting good points atm, but i think that kind of player is just to keep because it will come great in time. A combinaion of those 1 goal pr game conceded and all those almost assists and shots.

What often surprises me is that people tend to make 1 goal pr game conceded as bad defense, to go 10 games with no conceded higher than one is actually a trademark of good defense. It´s just that people confuse Fpl and real life sometimes in a strangely logic that only fpl people understand-)

Yes, he's still an excellent player in real life, but he needs to get more FPL points to justify his price - hopefully he will start to do so soon.
Likewise, the Liverpool defence is still strong, and they nearly always score more than they concede, but it is quite frustrating that they keep just missing out on those clean sheets.

                  • 14 Years
                  4 years, 5 months ago

Yep he's undoubtedly been frustrating for owners - but its the 'good' type of frustration (if there is such a thing) in that he's doing the right things from an FPL perspective but his points tally has undoubtedly suffered due to liverpool's lack of Allison for their first 8 games

The 'bad' type of frustration would be much worse, where he was anonymous, being benched/rotated, or playing in a bad defence

As things stand he's actually playing in the best defence in the league on goals conceded - despite missing the best GK in the world for 80% of their games - i'd be reasonably confident there's an uptick in clean sheets just around the corner, and hopefully that coincides with some of his attacking endeavours starting to translate into G&A into the bargain

I see him as a phenomenal FPL asset all things considered, same with his fullback partner across the pitch

I have been chatting/ranting on this most of the wknd!
CHO; Debatable. He had a hand in his back. He could have stayed up. Pens have been given for less. Booking's have not been given for worse! I have no beef with over-turning the pen, but I thought the booking was harsh.

Dilva; This is hugely contentious right?
Dilva got a touch - I don't think we can debate that, but... if we acknowledge the touch, then the goal shouldn't stand because Sterling was obstructing the GKs view and so should have been chalked off.
The VAR review said there was not 'a sufficient angle' to confirm a touch was made, and so gave the goal on the basis that Sterling was onside when KDB played the ball.
So for me - you either honour the VAR decision, or the goal doesn't stand.

For the record - not a VAR fan!

Interesting! I'm a CHO owner as of this week and I didn't see the game, but I saw on Sofascore what was happening without seeing the context.

For me the key part of VAR is that it overturns situations where the ref has made a clear and obvious error. In most cases it simply isn't used for that: debatable decisions are being made, some of which support the ref's original call, some of them don't. If there is any doubt at all then the ref's decision should stand, even if it looks like he might be more wrong than right.

If this rule isn't being enforced then we may as well do away with the clear and obvious error thing entirely and have a panel of refs dissect a play and make a majority decision. This would slow the game down too much so I would be in favour of introducing this but giving each team one or two VAR appeal per half. That for me would solve most of the problems.

            1. Brimble82
              • 5 Years

A limited number of reviews would be interesting.
              Kind of like in cricket?
The thing that is baffling for me is that the on-pitch ref's aren't taking up the opportunity to look at the pitch-side monitors (as we've seen in the World Cup).
That way they can then have their own original decision, the view of a VAR ref, and corroborate against a slow-mo replay. The latter two could even happen simultaneously. Not sure why we aren't utilising this - not once! ...in 90 games! ...yet it's been available the whole time (apparently).

              Seems illogical.

I agree with your statement above. And for me, (as it stands) VAR was brought in to 'remove the errors' and therefore take away those 'what if' convos. But it's not only not achieved that - it is creating those conversations in it's own right!

I think that's really odd as well. I've seen pundit refs deny it but I do wonder if they were given guidance to avoid the screens to avoid the delays we say during the world cup. The person who originally made the call with the evidence available to them at the time and the right context of the game should have the final say. The studio should be there to pick up obvious errors, like no contact in a given penalty or things that can be difficult to see, like a foul or offside in buildup play or a incident off the ball.

This article from last week confirms:
"The referee always has the ability to go and look at the monitor if that's what they choose to do," Mike Riley

But that ref's have been asked to use it "sparingly".

See full article here (though won't help us understand why they aren't using them!):

First good week for a while. Took a -4 for three transfers which included Vardy and Cancelo. 73 points after the hit.

The other part of the hit was CHO so there is some concern there. I'm also worried about Auba. I got him in precisely in time to see him fall off a cliff. He's on his way out, the only question is whether it's before or after Wolves.

      Smooth:
digne and pukki to Rico and vardy for a hit worked like a charm. Up 20pts after the hit. The digne loss of assist and last minute own goal were the icing on the cake.
Even smoother cause I’d forgotten about the Friday deadline, my missus reminded me about 30 mins to deadline but we were at some thrift store in the boondocks with no phone service so I had to speed off towards town looking for service to make the transfers and barely got it in in time.

Rough: didn’t have the guts to make it a -8 to swap auba for rashford. As an arsenal fan I steer clear of their players so they don’t ruin my epl and fpl in the same week but got suckered in before Bournemouth when kdb was injured and I was flush with cash. He’s going this week for sure

First time I have been able to shout about a gameweek this season.

Wilson to Vardy worked out well / Alonso CS was a bonus / Rico 1st sub to replace Mahrez

Smooth : Best captain score since GW1

Rough; A grim 43, 4.5m GW rank, dropped from 9k to 44k. What made it worse was the transfer I’d had planned that I didn’t go through with, Kane>Vardy, a guy in my ML did on top of owning Chilwell! Not only that, he tripled Vardy! Out scored me 106 to 43, wiped out my huge lead, and is now 3 points ahead! My transfer of Pukki>Jimenez didn't pull up any trees in the end. The only silver lining is that I’d never planned to captain Vardy, so it cost me 13 points in the end.

Smooth; KdB(c) at least returned something, Kane got something back on the failed transfer, Salah, Ryan and Abraham chipped in.

One of the worst GW I can remember. Zinch & Pukki to Kun (C) & 4.0 def. Saka, CHO, Auba etc. 35 points after the hit. I know it's what you did as opposed to what you didn't but for context, the alternative plan I was toying with up until deadline was Pukki > Vardy and captaining Sterling, in hindsight quite clearly the way to go, 28 points lost.

      Smooth:
      - Took a 4 point hit to replace Aguero (1) and Dendoncker (2) with Vardy (20) and David Silva (9).
      - The delayed decision to first award that goal to KDB and then change it to David Silva's with a KDB assist actually worked in my favour since I owned both of them. And it was especially fortunate for me since if David Silva's touch had been detected by VAR then the goal would have been disallowed.
      - Green arrows in all my mini-leagues, and up half a million places overall (but only from 3m to 2.5m).

      Rough:
      - Left Pereira's 6 points on the bench.

      Smooth:
Scored 75 largely thanks to Vardy and Sterling (c) though all 6 attackers got returns. Also got Soyuncu off the bench.

      Rough:
My defence was horrible. Between Pope, Digne, TAA and Tomori I scored 2 points.

My transfers were also Son & Pukki to Mount & Vardy so was an 18 point gain.

I benched Chilwell’s 19 points as I read somewhere that Soton have scored in all of their home games and I kept benching Lundstram’s points. And I captained Aguero for his 1 point.

Decisions cost me around 25 points as was torn between captaining KDB and Aguero.

      Disaster!

24 points. Went from 13k to 185k. Yikes. Too many examples to give but I am nearly able to look at my team again. It highlights how binary FPL can be as my team looked decent for the gameweek.

      Only Auba and Tomori blanked.
Sterling(C), Vardy, Gazza, Maddison top scorers

Soyuncu off the bench for Otamendi
Gazza off the bench for McGovern (This one was a bit of bench-wankery, but could've gone wrong if Norwich hadn't done all subs as Krul seemed to carry an injury)

5 consecutive blanks for Pukki now, how many do we think he will have?

I think he will pop at GW 14, 1.des against Arsenal.

    Will make it 8 consecutives.

Actually, Brighton away with the way Brighton and Norwich plays it could be a goalfest, so if one still got Pukki i think Brighton is a good game for Norwich attack.
