Learning from a disastrous start to the FPL season

“Failure is rich in learning opportunities for a simple reason: in many of its guises, it represents a violation of expectation. It is showing us that the world is in some sense different from the way we imagined it to be.” – Matthew Syed, Black Box Thinking

It feels a bit paradoxical to be writing this under the guise of a Pro Pundit. I’m currently sat at 1,675, 335 in the world, the lowest rank I have ever had in my 13 seasons of playing.

I certainly don’t feel like a ‘Pro’ at this point in time.

I’m being burned my poor decisions, bad planning and over-complicating Fantasy Premier League as I chase shadows and try to claw my way up the ladder.

In some ways, my poor season helps me write these articles. It would be difficult to write a series on learning from mistakes if I was sat snugly in the top 10k after all.

The blinking red light sat atop my black box is a constant reminder that I need to learn from my errors and start to do things differently.

But first, I need to address the fundamental mistakes that I’ve made to get me to this point.

The wheels came off my season in Gameweek 5, and I haven’t been able to get them back on.

This was the week I left Teemu Pukki (£6.9m) on the bench when he hauled against Man City. I instead played Jack O’Connell (£4.5m) at home to Southampton.

It’s easy to look back and say, “well that was a bad decision” – but let’s consider why exactly it was such a bad move.

Okay, I felt like Sheffield United had a decent chance of a clean sheet.  I was hopeful of six to nine points for O’Connell.

But.

Pukki was playing Man City, who had just lost Aymeric Laporte (£6.3m) to a nasty injury. Norwich were scoring goals for fun and Pukki was in great form. His ownership was at around 40%.

As a forward, it’s hard to put an upper limit on their potential, but really, I should have put his ceiling in the double digits with all the factors considered. Essentially, I risked a defender (historically low-ceiling) over an in-form striker, up against a makeshift defence (high-ceiling). I tried to be too clever, and it failed miserably.

Lessons: Consider the ceiling of players before making a decision, defenders are likely to score fewer points than forwards. Don’t bench in-form forwards. Use information from team camps to aid decisions.

This is basic stuff, Az.

I did not make enough changes on my Wildcard – while Aubameyang failed to deliver

From Gameweek 5 I struggled to stop the rot, so in Gameweek 8 I played the Wildcard to try and get ahead of the curve.

A few weeks before, I had belittled Joe for taking all of the “wild” out of a Wildcard. Perhaps this influenced my thinking. I made a number of bad decisions here, of which I am now paying the price.

In total, I made six changes on my wildcard, with only three players from the team that lined up in Gameweek 7 leaving my team. Straight away, this seems questionable. I obviously had faith in the core players in my team, so why did I Wildcard?

The main reason was for a switch in formation. Strikers were performing well, and I moved on Pierre-Emeric Aubameyang (£11.1m). I can’t beat myself up over the choice of striker, he had scored points in every game up until this point. Arsenal were ticking over in the league (although they did look a bit suspect). However, the manner in which I got him raised a few eyebrows.

Gone was Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), leaving me with no Liverpool attackers. My reasoning was they were about to hit a tricky run of fixtures and I wasn’t going to captain their assets.

However, I had said a few days before that Manchester City and Liverpool were leagues apart of other teams in the division. Going with no Reds attackers has left we incredibly stressed watching their matches. Normally a sign there’s something not quite right with how your team is set up.

On the flip side, I’ve felt stressed watching Arsenal play because I know, for my team, the pressure is on Aubameyang to deliver. The chances of the Gabonese international blanking while Liverpool overcame their ‘tricky’ run was not set in stone. It wasn’t worth the risk. Relying on Liverpool assets to blank and Arsenal attackers to haul, in light of both last season and this season, isn’t logical. It was a poor move – perhaps justifiable if I had the faith to captain Aubameyang during his easier games – but I didn’t.

Even with Aubameyang scoring in every game leading up to my ownership, I still didn’t even consider him for the armband. This should have been a warning.

Lessons learned: Teams like Liverpool and City need to be considered differently to others in the league. Their players don’t have “bad” fixtures. Liverpool attackers in particular are assured of starts, return almost every week, and a loss or a blank would be a major shock. For other teams, it is expected. Think twice before selling players from these sides.

With that said, at least there was some method in the madness. But with my other two major decisions on the wildcard, I am really struggling to see the logic.

Out went Kevin de Bruyne (£10.1m) despite being given information that he was only going to miss one Gameweek. I took a punt on Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) thinking Bernardo Silva (£7.9m) would get a ban and he’d represent good value for money. What a short-term move. I’d always want de Bruyne back. Effectively I sold the best performing player in the game for a one week “punt” on someone who isn’t even first choice.

Lessons learned: Consider the long-term potential of transfers. Don’t give yourself a transfer to make down the line if you can afford it. Avoid players who aren’t first choice when everyone is fit. There’s a reason they aren’t playing.

I was recently priced out of being able to sign Vardy

And then comes my biggest regret of the season. One of the other reasons for the Wildcard was to get ahead of the curve with Leicester. In came the top-scoring defender in the game at the time, Ricardo Pereria (£6.1m), after a check of his stats vs. Ben Chilwell (£5.5m) and I made sure to leave £2.0m in the bank to do Pukki to Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) after Pukki’s appealing fixture at home to Villa (which they lost 5-1).

I am a firm believer in banking a transfer after a Wildcard. In my view, your team should be set up for at least a few weeks, and only injuries and/or suspensions should influence your decisions.

But, once again, I was blighted by short-term potential. Pukki had Villa at home, Vardy had Liverpool away. I was fearful of a Pukki haul. I decided that I would give Pukki the home game and then move on Vardy.

Both players blanked. Not a disaster. But then Vardy went up in price unexpectedly and I was priced out of the move. I was left with £2.0m in the bank, an out of form Pukki, and my plan to get Vardy went up in smoke.

I was left ruing my decision to go for a £4.5m midfielder (Bukayo Saka) over a £4.3m or £4.4m option who would have given me a bit of leeway in case of any fluctuations in the market.

I think this is a good opportunity to consider, what do you think a free transfer is worth? If I had gone with Vardy straight away, and Pukki had got 10 points – I would have been annoyed that Gameweek.

But then, I would have gone into the next Gameweek with two free transfers, the striker I wanted in the long run, and a way of correcting any potential Mahrez / KDB or Aubameyang / Salah or Mané regret. I personally think this is worth 10 points.

Instead, I moved Pukki on for a player I didn’t really want in Callum Wilson (£8.0m), who went on to blank against Norwich and Watford. Vardy, meanwhile, averaged 15 points in the next two games. A painful lesson.

Lessons learned: Don’t give yourself transfers to make. Allow yourself room for flexibility. If taking punts, have a way out. Don’t dig yourself into a corner. Back the players you want, don’t buy players you don’t have faith in.

I sold Mount for Hudson-Odoi ahead of Gameweek 10

And now we are approaching Gameweek 11 and it doesn’t look like I’ve learned from these mistakes. Last week, I let go of Mason Mount (£6.9m), one of my only decent players (points-wise) for yet another punt… Callum Hudson-Odoi (£6.0m).

While this move was necessary to correct my Mahrez mistake, I do now wonder if I have made the error of buying in a player very at risk of rotation, at the expense of someone in form, in the same team, who has his position locked down.

It will be a painful reminder once again if I have to sheepishly buy Mount back at £0.4m more than I paid for him. However, I’m going to stand by this decision this time.

Hudson-Odoi had, arguably, been Chelsea’s best attacker over the previous few weeks. Christian Pulisic (£7.1m) was out of favour. No one could have predicted he’d get a hat-trick (and Willian (£7.0m) would score too!).

If Hudson-Odoi does end up on the bench in the foreseeable future, I do believe this is just one of those things that happens – rather than being a particularly bad decision. Time will tell if I regret it, I’m sticking with him for now.

Buying Hudson-Odoi will unlikely be picked up by the Black Box if it fails… but selling Mount… well, I can already feel myself writing this up with a sense of bitterness.

But that’s enough self-reflection. Onwards we go as we catapult towards Gameweek 11. My team is not how I want it, I’m worried about not owning numerous, in form, highly owned players and equally not confident about my own misfiring boys. Another hit has already been taken to bring in Vardy for Wilson, to correct the biggest regret of my FPL career to date.

Trying to plan ahead, I’ve toyed with the idea of selling Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) next week for Sadio Mané (£11.9m) as City’s fixtures turn. Having written this article, I’m feeling much less inclined to make this move. Hey, maybe these articles are helpful after all…

Here is how I currently plan to line-up in Gameweek 11

Lessons learned from Gameweek 10

Have decided that I just can’t fit Vardy into my team, instead just going to take out the deadwood Pukki and Aurier.

Aurier > Chilwell leaves me with 6.3m for a forward, any suggestions?

Yes, the icon can only be filled in by a 'gravatar'. My view is that going to the trouble of getting one implies a sense of commitment to the site, so 'gravless' suggests a fair-weather poster. It goes with whether you've paid up or not, and how long you've been participating. So superkitten is an uncommitted newbie on a freebie giving it large, which is a bit out of order. Dipping your toe in the water and acting humble is perfectly appropriate, though.

But, now that the importance of a sweet little pic has been pointed out, maybe I'll get one (how??!) and maybe I had better pay at week 19 if there's an offer. Just hate the thought of getting bogged down in all those stats; it's addictive enough without them. If only there was some fair weather about...

I agree with a lot og your points Az. Especially spending unnecessary money on bench players. I personally picked 4.6 Douglas Luiz as my 8th attacker instead of for instance 4.4 dendoncker just because I had the .2 extra. Really regret it now and won't do that mistake again as those extra .1s do matter

FPL is best played without overcomplicating things. A lot of the mistakes Az made seemed to come from trying to be too clever or forcing differentials. Look ahead for good fixtures, stick to your plans.

I've made similar mistakes this season too by not moving on Mount and Vardy after saying to myself: "Get the Chelsea #10 before the season - bought Barkley but then didn't switch to Mount" and then "Get Vardy after the Liverpool game" which was my plan all along after having spoken of my fondness for Vardy as a pick for a few weeks prior.

So I'm gonna say it now and will stick by it (unless injuries somehow scupper the plan): "Ditch Auba next week, buy Vardy. Get triple Liverpool by GW 14 latest."

Bookmarking. And I'm gonna stick to those points.

I have the bugger. I got him in 3 weeks ago and he's scored 2, 2, 2. I don't consider it a mistake really, I made an informed decision and it didn't work out. But that's not the problem. The problem is making moves that don't make sense.

Removing KdB for Mahrez for one week is quite obviously a mistake imo especially with value locked up in KdB. Other mistakes are not moving for players that have shown good form and have a fixture swing. Vardy being one. The next team to have this are Liverpool starting in GW 13. Don't miss that one.

Agree with a lot of your points.

Miraculously, I'm still not sold on Vardy. Saw a stat that something like 12 of their 22 goals have come in 135 minutes against 10 teams with 10 men?

My transfers are effectively boiling down to:

      A) Playing Ings and Vardy as part of a 3-4-3

      B) Playing Jiminez and Martial as part of a 3-5-2

      What would you rather?

Thing is with this season is that things just seem to change and evolve so fast. I actually think having a long-term plan like the one you've outlined could be a hindrance, as you never know who could hit / lose form.

If Auba gets a brace against Wolves, are you really still going to sell him when he plays Southampton and Norwich in the next three, for example?

      1. Camzy
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

True. But having the plan there helps you see the woods from the trees. There are a lot of distractions in FPL. Some short term results really skew you away from taking much more logical lines.

If Aubameyang scores 2 against Wolves - he still has a number of warning flags. He plays for Arsenal who have been unconvincing at best, he isn't taking nearly enough shots since Lacazette has been back, few penalty touches, been pushed out wide, and has been relying on his good goal conversion.

Paying 11.1m for him is therefore a mistake when Vardy is firing at similar rates for a more in-form team with better longer term fixtures at 2.0m less.

My team's linked. It's been evolving since GW2 with hits, one rolled transfer and a wildcard

Keep this in mind: the market currently isn't moved by casuals. It seems the casuals checked out as early as GW5

If you plan a great move two GWs ahead, the player could be 0.3M up by then. Happened with Connolly, Tammy (through the blanks), Vardy after Liverpool, etc

Vardy after Pool was 8.9m. Hadn't gone up yet even though that was where the fixture swung. It was the timely move.

We'll have another such moment with Salah/Mane in GW 13. Perhaps it can be delayed one week but certainly no later.

You're making my point. The market is moving with pro players' mindsets, not casual bandwagons

            - Vardy had a brace against Newcastle but the "casuals" weren't enough to increase his price before the Liverpool game, and then his price moved up after a blank (the LIV game), because pro players wanted him from GW9 instead

            - Connolly had a hat trick against Spurs, but his price didn't go up (and Greenwood's didn't drop, IIRC) until he started the next game (and blanked), because the pro players wanted to be sure he was a starter, even though he was subbed off after the red card

_ Tammy is a more obvious point. He was 7.2 by GW5, after two braces. Since then, he's risen to 7.8 with only one goal and an assist... The kind of momentum that comes from pro players seeing his sustained goal threat through the blanks

Bonus example: Janmaat is still 4.3, because pro players don't trust Watford. He's being noticed now, especially on FFS (I've been campaining for him), so maybe he'll finally move up

Id definitely still sell Auba after a brace if my general feeling is that hes worse value than whoever Im bringing in (like Mane for instance). I would never move a premium to another for a hit though, so patience is needed even if Mane is a better long term pick.

    Good read, that.

Especially like the lesson of treating City and Liverpool players differently.

Can't wait to effectively move Auba to Mane over the next 3 GWs or so.

Trouble with moving Auba on, for me at least, are those SOU / nor games...

I NEED to see Auba show some form against Wolves though, or he is gone for me.

Exactly the same for me! I bought him 3 GWs ago so have incurred all his blanks, but I also bought him for his next 2/3 fixtures too.

Jiminez also appeals to me (as a cut price Vardy). Will allow me to do Auba and Cantwell > Jiminez and Martial and switch to 3-5-2.

considering something similar. I'm wondering if we've missed the Lundstrum train (sort of like Doherty last season) but it seems Blades are still sharp defensively and he's still OOP so maybe not. Great differential pick in Chillwell as AZ says above.

@Az, do you think Connolly starts this weekend?

I started him this week and was delighted with the 8 points. NOR is a great fixture but Potter is also known for his roulette! Can't decide whether to do Cantwell > Martial and start him over Connolly.

I think so, but Trossard back will definitely dent his appeal.

        Hmm, disagree.

Benching a striker in any given gameweek is also a risky move. In Pukki's case, he had the form and the stats. And Laporte was ruled out for City.

It wasn't as lucky as you're making out.

    Refreshing article @Az cheers!

Has been a funny old start to the season with many in a similar boat to you, feeling like we can't get off the back foot.

For me, my slide has been a combination of overthinking/ complicating what were simple choices, coming on here when I hit some bad luck and getting influenced by unfounded group-think, and taking hits when the ranks are so tight.

With Kun and Boly still sitting in my team but no FT left, I'm at a bit of a crossroads but I do feel optimistic that things really can only get better and there are 27 GWs left - that is a long time! - with all the chips that come with that.

To those of us languishing in 1M+ OR - with the data we have access to on here and the wider FPL community, staying calm and sticking to our guns, I'm pretty sure most of us will be somewhere halfway respectable by the end 😀

I honestly think I might ... go hard or go home.

Like you I've never been this low in OR. I only brought Kun in on WC in GW9 and cap-failed him last week so he owes me big!

Given I'd have to take a hit to move him on, I will be keeping and possibly capping unless we get an unprecedented soundbite from Pep like "I plan to give Aguero a rest for the SOU match" (Imagine )

Thinking of doing Aguero + Cantwell -> Sterling + Pukki. I have exact cash for this and Norwich fixtures aren't terrible so maybe a few people have ditched and Pukki gets a sudden return to form?

Personally there was nothing wrong with going with Auba. I too went Auba from GW9 getting rid of Salah. In Az's case, before GW8 when he brought him in, Auba had the same points as Salah and 9 more points than Mane. He's only now a little bit behind them. Even though we are so poor right now, if we're going to score, highly likely it will be through Auba, and we have some nice game coming up. Southampton home, Norwich away, Brighton home, Auba is captain material in all those games.

He is too expensive for that average goals, i don't mind Tammy blanks, but Auba has to score. Shipping him allows me to strengthen 2 positions in my team

Salah has 3 more points than him and is 1.4m more. Nearly everyone has him here. I can understand why you would want to ship Auba, but I think it could come back to bite you with the games we have coming up

I know. Reason why I hadnt really considered him until now. But it looks like he has understood he has to be selfish and very direct in order to score more, hence impress, hence keep starting.

The opposite of CHO, who I still think will end up being a better player than Pulisic, but less direct, happier to set up team mates than scoring it seems... but who now looks third in the attacking wingers pecking order behind Willian and Pulisic - whereas before Puli hat trick, I felt like CHO was 2nd or even 1st

Great read AZ. The point about leaving flexibility in terms of cash and buying players you actually want instead of transfers waiting to happen seems easy enough but so hard to practice. I got in David Silva this GW,. worked out well but just a transfer waiting to happen.

Food for thought for my 5 GW plan, as I'm in the same boat as you in terms of 0 LIV attackers. No Auba cash cow to get in either so will have to be some intricate planning to get in Mane by their home game against Brighton.

Have to say, I think Silva is a shrewd pick. He's missing internationals, has the most double digit hauls in the game, and is playing most minutes in the league.

With KDB dropping a bit deeper now thanks to Rodri's injury and Fernandinho moving to CB, I reckon he's a great pick going forward!
