Why it’s the last-chance saloon for Sergio Aguero in my FPL team

In our latest Pro Pundits article, Ash – aka ‘Chief’ – is readying himself for a Sergio Aguero swansong as Jamie Vardy’s form and fixtures become too good to ignore.

Before last week’s deadline, I wanted to get attacking Leicester coverage in no small part due to their tremendous form under Brendan Rodgers as well as their good run of upcoming games.

Jamie Vardy (£9.3m) and James Maddison (£7.3m) were at the top of my watchlist but, instead of buying them, I decided to bank my free transfer and hoped that the Foxes could somehow have a quiet Friday night game. That thinking didn’t go to plan as ten-man Southampton capitulated and shipped nine goals. Kasper Schmeichel’s (£5.1m) clean sheet was damage limitation at best for my FPL team.

Thankfully, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) did the business as captain the day after and, for the first time this season, I captained the highest-scoring player in my team for a given Gameweek! It was also my first back-to-back green arrow for this campaign.

It could have gone horribly wrong had I trusted Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) with armband duties, with the Argentina international failing to start for a second week in a row and only making a cameo appearance. In the end, despite my initial trepidation, I somehow scored 64 points, which was well above the average and translated into a 300k overall rise.

It’s fair to say that any FPL manager will be in panic mode if their squad contains a £12m+ striker that has failed to score since Gameweek 6 and who has not started in two consecutive Gameweeks during that time. After his damp squib cameo, I was extremely tempted to sell Aguero late on Saturday night in anticipation of his price drop and Vardy’s price rise.

However, I wrote off the -£0.2m swing and opted to hold in case unexpected injuries cropped up on the Sunday games. In addition, I was also keen to see what Pep Guardiola would do with his rotation policy for the EFL Cup on Tuesday night. To my annoyance, he started both Aguero and Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m). Aguero’s brace served as a futile reminder of what could have been against Aston Villa.

In a strange way, it’s a good thing that he scored as Manchester City are due to play the Saints again over the weekend. Also, Jesus has started three games in a row over a short period of time. Surely he’s due a rest? With this in mind, I’m reluctantly willing to hold onto Aguero for one more Gameweek.

At the same time, with my two free transfers (and a -4), I’m trying to see if I can still shoehorn Vardy into the team. If I did, it will involve selling Mason Greenwood (£4.3m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) and Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m). But I’m not keen on doing that due to the imbalance it would create. Maybe I will have to persevere without Vardy for one more weekend? After this weekend he faces Arsenal and he loves scoring a goal against them (eight in eight). One thing is for certain, it really is last-chance saloon time for Aguero.

In my estimation, if there’s one thing that we learned from Tuesday night it was that Sterling will almost certainly start on Saturday after his absence from the EFL Cup squad (provided he remains injury-free). Sterling is the stand-out captain pick, not just for Manchester City in Gameweek 11, but among all teams.

With the exception of Gameweek 8, he has registered a Fantasy return in every home game that he has started in the Premier League this season. You can’t go wrong captaining one of the marquee players of the reigning champions, a team that on average score more than three goals per game at the Etihad. It’s as good as it gets in FPL as a ‘captain obvious’ pick.

I wouldn’t risk captaining Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) against Aston Villa despite his goal against Tottenham, as Villa appear to be a tougher unit when playing at home this season. As for Tammy Abraham (£7.8m), on paper he has a good fixture against Watford – however, the Hornets have kept two clean sheets in their last three games, so I won’t be giving him the armband either.

Ash, known by many as Chief, recorded his best-ever FPL finish of 110th in 2011/12 and has become a hugely popular name on Twitter ever since.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 9

Unfortunately I agree with others that playing a WC this week with no Sterling is madness, even if you plan to only hold for a couple then spread the value later.

The other comment I would make is I think the balance between investment in defence and weakness of the bench isn't quite right - you should downgrade one of Mendy or Chilwell to upgrade Greenwood or Guendouzi

Thanks for that, a good bench is essential I always scrimp on it then have to take hits.
Off the top of your head is there anything you'd recommend to draft in Sterling?

I've just been looking at this for you and it is impossible without changing your structure or losing one of the top boys: Salah, Martial, KDB, Vardy .etc

You can get to within c. £1.5m of being able to do it if you did:
          Salah > Mané
          AWB > Lunds
          Mendy > Tomori
          Guend > Dendo

          Dilva > Sterling

I’m wildcarding as well this week and going with Sterling this week only then downgrade to Son after the Southampton game, think it’s worth it if I’m going to captain him! Personally I’m going a lot lighter in defence then getting an extra premium attacker (Firmino) instead of Greenwood with Son instead of KDB, guessing you’ve made the discussion those premiums are worth it though!

That's a good, I did worry my defence was a little heavy on funds. I am quite set on KDB as I've had him from the start but like you say having Sterling and C this week certainly makes it worth it

Yeah KDB definitely a good option if you’ve had him from the start, would have to lose Abraham or Firmino to get him over Son though so hoping that Dilva can cover City from GW12 onwards

I'd go 5 in MF with Tielemans over Gendouzi. Play a cheaper Defence of TAA + 2 enabling Silva to Sterling. Might have to go Mane over to Salah to make it happen.

Sterling is not essential in any way, shape or form and before you listen to anyone telling you that he is, you should ask them why he's more essential than, for instance, Salah, or if they feel you should keep Salah, why it's worth the upgrade of one of the other players at a team detriment of 2-4m

If your hunch is Salah, then go with Salah. There's really little to choose between them. Salah costs a fraction more but comes moreorless guaranteed a start. Sterling does not

Thank you for your comment, like you say my gut is saying go with Salah out of the big money midfielders and he would of been the easiest switch to make for me to get Sterling in. Barring the lack of Sterling does the rest look okay? Or am I falling short to go with this team on a wildcard?

The team looks absolutely fine. People will always have personal preferences and pick at stuff

          1. Salah perma-captain (plus KdB/Vardy)
          2. Sensible formation
          3. No BAD choices
          4. A few of differentials

Makes sense. Alternatively consider Sterling over Salah. But I think the Guendouzi downgrade is a better option because Connolly is currently a great bench option. I will be starting him this week

    Which option is the best?

    A) save
    B) Maddison > Martial
    C) Wilson > Rashford
    D) Dendoncker > Yarmolenko, bench Wilson + benching headache going forwards.

    Ryan
    Soyuncu - TAA - Lundstram
    Mount - Maddison - Sterling - KDB
    Wilson - Vardy - Abraham
    (Digne, Lascelles, Dendoncker)

Should I let my plan to get in Robbo after city(will be double up with TAA) block me out from getting Martial?

Should I just get in Tony M, and go with the single pool defence?

Had both to start the season, but tempted to go back there!

    A) Get Robbo after city - forget Martial
    B) Get Martial now, forget Robbo and go with TAA as single pool defence.

He is good value for money but you need to own him when he's fit and producing. If you miss the bus by even a week or two it's not worth it. - I'm not a Martial fan and rarely own him because over the course of a season he doesn't do that well but he does have pockets of great numbers.

Yeah, currently he is playing deep & DSilva is playing in an advanced position. But with Rodri probably back after international break, KDB will come back to his normal position. So, considering doing DSilva to KDB in GW13 or GW14!

    A cantwell to dilva
B wilson, madds to sterling, ings /maupay/connolly (-4)

Silva is cheaper and delivering.. but yeah since i have kdb probably best to keep.
