Pro Pundits

Why I’ve sold James Maddison just two weeks after my Wildcard

Six-time top 5k finisher Utkarsh Dalmia – aka Zophar – discusses his post-Wildcard reshuffle in his latest Pro Pundits piece.

A total of 31 points immediately after a Wildcard and a Gameweek rank of 5,073,134: things did not go exactly to plan in Gameweek 9.

Callum Wilson (£8.0m) disappointed me again, and despite the bookies and pundits expecting the goal tally from the Bournemouth v Norwich game to go into double-digits, the game ended 0-0, with both sides registering their first clean sheets of the season.

Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) was denied an open goal by DeAndre Yedlin (£4.4m), and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) similarly by his own team-mate, Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m). The only Fantasy Premier League returns were a clean sheet from Fikayo Tomori (£4.8m) and an assist for Raheem Sterling (12.1m). Two of my highest point-scorers, Diego Rico (£4.2m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m), were on my bench.

As far as possible, I try to bank a transfer the week after the Wildcard as one week is not enough time to really judge FPL potential. I had also a busy weekend with it being Diwali over in India and had little besides statistics to rely upon, which can be dangerous. Statistics don’t show you how De Bruyne was faced with an open goal and only denied by his team-mate’s selfishness.

So I rolled a transfer, something which was aided by the Friday deadline as I often get itchy fingers on a Saturday morning. I didn’t have high expectations for my Leicester assets in the Southampton fixture. The Saints had conceded very few chances away to Wolves and perhaps were turning a corner under Ralph Hasenhüttl. I benched Caglar Soyuncu (£4.7m), expecting Saints and Danny Ings (£6.0m) in particular to score and didn’t expect James Maddison (£7.3m) to really get a big haul.

What followed was one of the most painful experiences I have had watching a football match. The Saints’ red card had me rubbing my hands in glee, expecting a points windfall, but the minutes passed and I saw Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) and Ayoze Perez (6.1m) plunder the points. I told myself, “This is just random. Look – even Jamie Vardy isn’t involved.” And then my heart sank when he bagged their fifth.

Seven goals in, I was reaching for the whiskey as Maddison displayed a complete aversion to the penalty box area. I can handle players not delivering points due to finishing or bad luck but watching Maddison run the game in a position alongside Wilfried Ndidi (£5.0m) had me beating myself up over why I would pick such an asset in the first place.

About four drinks in, I saw Vardy win a free-kick on the edge of the Saints’ penalty area. The only time I owned Maddison last season was for their game against Huddersfield, in which he scored from a free-kick. I mumbled to myself, “The way this night/season is going, he will probably cross it to Evans who is going to square it for Vardy”. Then I saw the ball hit the back of the net.

Never have I celebrated five FPL points with such gusto. Whiskey was spilled everywhere. Night salvaged, and I figured this might be the inspiration I needed for the season ahead. Be patient, the results will come.

However, one thing was clear to me on Friday night – I needed to get Jamie Vardy (£9.3m). I already had my eye on shipping Wilson as revenge for his captaincy failure against Norwich but figured it was best to wait for the games to finish.

Saturday started well with Sterling bagging my first captain goal since Gameweek 3, and I didn’t really lose any points with the award of the third goal to David Silva (£7.7m) over De Bruyne. Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m) not starting vindicated my decision somewhat to get rid of him on the Wildcard, meanwhile. I registered a total of 57 points in the end, with all attacking players except Wilson delivering, and naturally he was the target of my ire.

With two free transfers burning a hole in my pocket, there was no way the Cherries’ frontman was retaining his spot in my side. When assessing transfer decisions, I ask myself two questions:

  1. Who are the weakest links in my side?
  2. Who are the players I want to bring in?

Addressing question one first, Rico, Lundstram, Tomori and Soyuncu had all registered at least one clean sheet over the last two matches, and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) had been impressive despite not registering any returns. Defence was ok.

The midfield had all registered attacking returns but I couldn’t help but feel I had got out of jail with Maddison. He had 115 touches in the Southampton game, the second highest of any player on the pitch, but just one penalty area touch and zero chances created. Definitely a red flag.

Then I decided to look into Wilson’s stats and noticed that the Bournemouth striker did not register a single attempt against Watford. It seemed clear that these were the two players that need to go.

As for question two, I’ve always rated Vardy as a player but his awkward price tag made it difficult to include him in my Wildcard or in the Gameweek 1 team. I had a look at his fixtures and he had Arsenal in Gameweek 12 when Liverpool and Manchester City play each other. Vardy is a great captaincy option then as I don’t really fancy Abraham against Palace that week. Good fixtures, nailed and more goals than any player since Rodgers took over. Ownership on the rise. Quite simply, he needed to come in despite the immediate fixture away to the Eagles.

I had £6.1m for a replacement. The candidates I considered were:

  1. Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.0m) – The Ukranian was impressive against Sheffield United but after Newcastle. the Hammers play Burnley, Tottenham, Chelsea and Wolves, three of which are away. Tough fixtures and I really didn’t trust their attack after what I saw away to Everton in Gameweek 9.
  2. Daniel James (£6.1m) – With Manchester United switching to three at the back and Lingard fit, I wasn’t sure if James would continue to start regularly. Also there was a bit of hesitation in trusting the United attack, as maybe Norwich just made them look good.
  3. Harvey Barnes (£5.9m) – Ten gamweeks in, the table doesn’t lie. Leicester well and truly look like top four contenders and their fixture run is as good as it gets. Barnes clearly passed the eye test but his tendency to get substituted early, like in the Newcastle game in Gameweek 7, made me worry about him losing his place if he had a bad game. In general, he seemed more of an assist-type player than a goalscorer.
  4. Ayoze Perez (£6.1m) – Like many of you, I owned the Spaniard in Gameweek 1 but shipped him in Gameweek 3 after his poor numbers over the first two games. I’ve always looked at him more of a goalscorer than a creator and he has shown tendencies in the past to score his goals in bursts. His post-match interview was promising as well, and I asked myself, “Is it a bit kneejerk to bring him in?” Probably, yes. Vardy was likely rising in price that night, though, and Perez was close as well.

In the end, I got Perez and Vardy in for Wilson and Maddison, with the following thoughts on the former Newcastle man:

  1. Both of Leicester’s next two games are televised. If I don’t like what I see, he can easily be downgraded to many other options.
  2. He’s a goalscorer so his ceiling is quite high compared to the three others who are essentially creators.
  3. I trust Leicester more than I do Manchester United and West Ham at this point.

My squad now has ten players from Leicester, Chelsea, City and Liverpool, the four teams occupying the top four spots in the league. The plan is to stick with Perez at least till the Arsenal game and have two free transfers over the international break.

See you on the other side.

    Need to bench one from;

    A) Maddison
    B) Connolly

I’m actually leaning toward benching Maddy. He’s playing a bit deep, and outside of set pieces, he’s not really threatening. Plus I’ve got Vardy.

The article from Zophar is trying to dress up points (and price rise) chasing as something more strategic. Who scored 2 weeks ago? Oh yeah, Maddison against Liverpool.

Palace away doesn't exactly scream another haul, and to be fair, he hasn't tried to justify these moves with that game in mind.

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 5 months ago

Madders' points are like Pep's rotation. Buy a ticket and stick, as you really can't predict when it would roll your way or not. He's the annoying kind of fixture-proof too 😀

Reminds me of Jimenez, in a way, except that Madders has way more of the cheaper competitors who are likely to outscore him over short to medium terms than Jimenez had last season

While I accept the Perez moves does scream point chasing , I don't think getting vardy does. Perez was mainly the enabler . There was no real route to it besides a maddison downgrade

Actually really like him and want to see him do well but having watching him very closely for many years at Newcastle I would say he isn’t quite good enough and certainly not good enough to play for that Leicester team. On the plus side he is in a very good team and also he is very much a confidence player so I he goals might work for him got a few weeks. Long term he’s a poor pick IMO but he is also only 6m

            Agreed bro
Actually he's very selfish IMO. Can do better if he picks correct passes when in good position.
But yeah, can be great option if cements his place

    A. Wilson+Dendo >> Connelly+Martial
    B. Kun+Dendo >> Greenwood+Sterling

After Potters press conference is it safe to say, "Connolly going to start this weekend?"

Potter on whether Leandro Trossard is ready to start: "They were his first minutes since the end of August, so that's the consideration: how much time he can play. The quality of Leandro is not in doubt. We have to just manage that situation the best we can."

I honestly think this means a range of 30 to 70 minutes for Trossard... Which means he said nothing to help us in FPL, but at least it's a bit safer to say Connolly would be on the pitch for some time in that game, meaning no auto-sub

Probably not a safety concern, but for clarity I'd throw an "is" in there.

I like the Maddision > Perez move that Zophar did - but as a Maddison owner I'm not going there *just* yet...

If Maddison continues in the same role he had vs Southampton he will struggle to contribute attacking returns - but if he continues in the role he had vs Burnley in the prior game he'll be fine

He's on track for 180-ish points after 10 gameweeks at his current rate, never a bad thing

But if Perez has actually arrived its a no brainer of transfer eventually - frees up the guts of 1.0 as well

If it was for a hit , I probably wouldn't have made these moves , but vardy needed to come in so the other move was just an enabler really

Definitely likeable moves & Perez will be on everyone's radar if he notches again this weekend

Good point on Connolly's 0 shots in GW10 too - but when you pop him & Wilson up against each other over conolly's two starts they're pretty much equal across the board - which to me was justification enough to get Conolly onto my bench instead of Cantwell and Martial into my XI instead of Wilson!
