Pulisic a high risk pick with potential for high reward

The unpredictability of Fantasy Premier League in 2019/20 continues to baffle many of us in the game.

Each passing Gameweek brings more and more differentials to light as the tried and tested options largely fail to deliver.

Gameweek 10 started with Southampton conceding nine at home and ended in ghoulishly bizarre fashion with Tim Krul (£4.5m) registering 16 points, despite conceding three goals.

We also saw three hat-tricks being scored, two of which were by players owned by 5% or less.

A shout out must also go to this column’s picks as we saw a clean sweep of Fantasy returns in Gameweek 10, Marcos Alonso (£6.3m), Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) and Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) all delivering.

Let’s hope for some more luck this time around. Here are three differentials to consider for Gameweek 11.

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic ran the show for Chelsea as they won 4-2 at Burnley

Price: £7.2m

Ownership: 4.4%

GW11 Opponent: Watford (A)

It may be somewhat of a risky recommendation to tip a player that has only made four league starts this season but Christian Pulisic (£7.2m) clearly has talent.

Since making his debut for Chelsea, the United States international has at times looked jaded and arguably not played to his very best.

That’s not surprising, especially when his pre-season was interrupted with Pulisic featuring in all of his country’s knock out games during the CONCACAF Gold Cup over the summer.

This may partly explain why it’s taken him longer to adapt to life in the Premier League.

However, among all midfielders in Gameweek 10, he had the joint-fifth most touches in the penalty box (nine) and the joint-second most amount of goal attempts (five).

With plenty of creativity to boot, he completely ran the show against Burnley and was comfortably the best player on the pitch, hat-trick aside.

That was a remarkable turnaround for a player that had only scored 18 FPL points before last Saturday.

Pulisic has done more than enough to warrant another Premier League start in Gameweek 11 when Chelsea face Watford.

On average, the Hornets have conceded 2.1 goals per game since the start of the season and have largely struggled against top-six sides.

Quique Sanchez Flores may have finally stopped the rot at Vicarage Road, with back-to-back home clean sheets, but I think they will struggle against a free-scoring Chelsea team inspired by a determined Pulisic.

Anthony Martial

Martial is slowly coming back into the Fantasy picture

Price: £7.6m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Bournemouth (A)

At the start of the season, Anthony Martial‘s (£7.6m) out-of-position status seemed too good to be true.

FPL managers had been handed a midfielder from a top-six club, priced under £8.0m and playing as a centre forward.

Martial then duly delivered Fantasy returns in each of the first three Gameweeks of 2019/20, before injury ruled him out of the next six in a row.

However, the French international finally returned to the starting line-up against Norwich – celebrating that fact with a goal.

Of course, Martial did also missed a penalty, but it’s good to know that he has become a viable option again with United’s run of generous fixtures.

During the 3-1 win at Carrow Road, Martial had more touches in the final third (33) than Pulisic did at Burnley and received more passes in the opposition half (23) than Mohamed Salah.

This strong involvement for United bodes well for him and, provided he stays fit, he should retain his place as a first-team player, whether that’s playing out wide or straight through the centre.

United next face a Bournemouth side that has improved defensively in recent weeks. After going the first eight league matches without a clean sheet, the Cherries have kept two back-to-back against Norwich and Watford.

However, Manchester United, despite some criticism of their attack of late, have six goals in their last three matches in all competitions and have scored eight times in their three previous meetings with Bournemouth.

Therefore, I would not be surprised if this match was also marked by another attacking display.

Sébastien Haller

Haller deserves a chance against Newcastle in Gameweek 11

Price: £7.4m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Newcastle United (H)

It might seem hard to justify a player that has only scored one goal in his last six league games.

There is no doubt that the early stages of a bandwagon were being formed when Sébastien Haller (£7.4m) scored three goals in two games.

Yet despite his lack of goals, he remains West Ham’s second-highest FPL points’ scorer (41) for the season and for a player within his price bracket that seems fairly respectable when considering that Raúl Jiménez has 43 points and Ashley Barnes has 36 points.

It may sound cliché but I think there is still more to come from Haller.

He is currently averaging an attacking fantasy return for every 162 mins played which doesn’t seem unreasonable for someone during his debut campaign for a mid-table side.

No doubt this could have been better had he not missed two big chances since Gameweek 1 as well.

Up next for the Hammers at the London Stadium are a Newcastle United team that currently reside in the relegation zone.

It’s just the kind of match that Haller needs for his confidence. After all, two of his last goals have come at home and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s able to unlock the Magpies defence and get back to scoring ways.

CP very tight at home at the back, therefore feel T will blank. However, they are less than prolific going forward.

Soy may very well end up getting the higher score but your reasoning is borderline insane when you’ve got a key team member coming off of a record goal haul

Lol, you’ve kinda contradicted yourself there; agreeing with me, the calling me insane. A previously record goal haul doesn’t contribute to future scoring and CP are very different to SOU. Let’s leave it there and you can get back to me if he scores.

For the record, I never agreed with you. I said that Soyuncu “could” score more points than Tielemans......that, however, doesn’t make it more likely. Not to mention the comparative ceiling of the two players.

Defenders tend to have a lower ceiling and generally players who cost more score more. Let’s wait and see thought, eh pet?!

Let this be a lesson to you young man. A higher ceiling doesn't mean he will or is more likely too. CP are solid defensively, but don't score many goals. This is why Soy was always the better option, (11 vs 3 points). I hope you learn from this and don't repeat the same mistakes. Good day sir.

The result doesn’t justify the decision. I didn’t have Tielemans, only had Soy and am very pleased with how today went (for obvious reasons). But if I had to choose to start one I would go with Tielemans every single time.

I've ummmmed and arrrred over my captaincy selection this week.

I had a few candidates and today I have decided to go with Salah.
I can see why the 3 City players top the voting. I also agree that they appear the safer picks.
Though I've been looking at stats which have directed me into switching the armband to Salah. Whilst many would quickly shut me down and give me reasons why we should only captain a City player this week, I'm happy with my conclusion.

Penalties is always a big plus... especially in attacking sides like Liverpool and against a team who have already conceded a couple of penalties already this season. (Though I appreciate this isn't that relevant). It was also nice seeing Milner play in the League Cup assuring Salah will have the pens whilst he himself is on the pitch.

This is just a factor. Another factor which I see as more apparent is some of their defensive stats.

Whilst they've only conceded 8 in 5 games at home (keeping 2 clean sheets against Norwich and Man Utd), we all know Liverpool are capable of repeating what City did to them in that opening game of the season.

Despite these 2 clean sheets, Villa sit 3rd in the table in shots conceded behind Norwich and Southampton. In all games, no team has conceded more chances than Aston Villa from the right side which also bodes well for Mo. Also, they sit comfortably at the top of the stats table for the most attempts conceded from set pieces. This could play into the hands of TAA/VDD?

Although the above info isn't gold, it's been enough to make me go with Salah (C). He's currently just 5th in the highest owned midfielders at 29%. If he fails to score, I won't be mad at myself.... the reward for a haul would be fantastic. Of course, there are potentials hauls in that City match. The fact that Salah is quickly becoming a differential in my Mini Leagues means it's a risk I am happy to go with.

Good luck all and here's hoping it's an exciting weekend ahead

Salahs away stats this season ?

Salah could of course get a monster haul.

But an in form City, Sterling in form, rested mid week and with Mendy back pushing him more Central at home against a shambolic Southampton ...

.... I’m not going to over think it

I appreciate that and agree with the Sterling comments. I don't own Sterling and plan to bring him in after the Liverpool and Chelsea fixtures have passed. If I owned Sterling, I wouldn't have to overthink it that's for sure

If you don’t own Sterling, KDB or Aguero then Salah is definitely the next best option for me.

Good points. Another factor that helps Salah (C) is Klopp's comments on Fabinho:

"I don't know yet [if he will give it any consideration]. We will see. Do I say 'no challenges at all?' That's not possible against Aston Villa. The player knows it, I know it. I didn't make a final decision."

If he leaves him out, it's more than likely that Ox comes in and his linkup with Salah is pretty damn good. 🙂

Milner rarely plays 2 games a week, and seemingly starts most CL games. So I think it's more likely he starts against Genk.

You've listed good reasons for Salah being a good pick. But as captain? He doesn't come close to Sterling imo.

Sterling has better form, is at home and is up against a Southampton team that has conceded more shots than Villa. To cap things off, Southampton are noticeably weaker down their right (City's left) which is where Sterling plays.

Picking a differential for differential's sake isn't a good idea.

I was going to be praying Sterling didn't haul against the Saints either way. The only reason that stopped me bringing him in for the juicy fixture against Saints was the next two games. I didn't want 5 players in the Liverpool v City game.

I guess I should have been clearer on put my team up. If the City game doesn't go as planned, then it could pay off and that's why I see it as high reward. Less high risk as I don't own Sterling anyway 😀

This team look wildcard worthy? Already took a -4 to switch Wilson & Otamendi for Vardy & Tomori.

    Pope
    VvD - Otamendi - Soyuncu
    Sterling - Salah - KdB - Mount - McGinn
    Wilson - Abe

    (4.0 - Lundstram - Rico - Greenwood)

Pull the trigger on Wilson+Dendo >> Martial+Connelly? Leaves me this 3-5-2...

    Pope
    TAA • Lunds • Tomori
    KDB • Mount • Mané • Maddison • Martial
    Kun(C) • Tammy
    (McG. Connelly. Söy. Rico)

I wouldn’t bet on Pulisic starting this weekend, I see him starting midweek and can’t imagine he’ll start 4 games in the space of 10 days. I’m expecting CHO to start tbh

If I go Auba Wilson —> Vardy Rash (-4), this would be the team:

    Pope
    TAA, Otamendi, Lundstram
    Mount, Maddison, KDB, Sterling (C),
    Vardy, Rash, Abraham

    Button, Tomori, Rico, Cantwell

    Any feedback please?

    Cheers!

Are People really using a sample size of 1 against Southampton With 10 men to conclude that Maddison (who scored 8 Points regardless) now has a different role than earlier in the season and selling him? Lol, would be the most deserved punish of the season for sellers if he hauls.

Most people genuinely base their decision on who scored points / blanked last week - as the max transfers in and out always shows

Start Dunk (NOR) or Lundy (BUR)?

The other will be on bench incase Otamendi does not play.

Play 2 of Connolly, Haller and Pukki? Currently on Lundy, Haller and Pukki
