Pulisic a high risk pick with potential for high reward

The unpredictability of Fantasy Premier League in 2019/20 continues to baffle many of us in the game.

Each passing Gameweek brings more and more differentials to light as the tried and tested options largely fail to deliver.

Gameweek 10 started with Southampton conceding nine at home and ended in ghoulishly bizarre fashion with Tim Krul (£4.5m) registering 16 points, despite conceding three goals.

We also saw three hat-tricks being scored, two of which were by players owned by 5% or less.

A shout out must also go to this column’s picks as we saw a clean sweep of Fantasy returns in Gameweek 10, Marcos Alonso (£6.3m), Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) and Benjamin Mendy (£5.9m) all delivering.

Let’s hope for some more luck this time around. Here are three differentials to consider for Gameweek 11.

Christian Pulisic

Pulisic ran the show for Chelsea as they won 4-2 at Burnley

Price: £7.2m

Ownership: 4.4%

GW11 Opponent: Watford (A)

It may be somewhat of a risky recommendation to tip a player that has only made four league starts this season but Christian Pulisic (£7.2m) clearly has talent.

Since making his debut for Chelsea, the United States international has at times looked jaded and arguably not played to his very best.

That’s not surprising, especially when his pre-season was interrupted with Pulisic featuring in all of his country’s knock out games during the CONCACAF Gold Cup over the summer.

This may partly explain why it’s taken him longer to adapt to life in the Premier League.

However, among all midfielders in Gameweek 10, he had the joint-fifth most touches in the penalty box (nine) and the joint-second most amount of goal attempts (five).

With plenty of creativity to boot, he completely ran the show against Burnley and was comfortably the best player on the pitch, hat-trick aside.

That was a remarkable turnaround for a player that had only scored 18 FPL points before last Saturday.

Pulisic has done more than enough to warrant another Premier League start in Gameweek 11 when Chelsea face Watford.

On average, the Hornets have conceded 2.1 goals per game since the start of the season and have largely struggled against top-six sides.

Quique Sanchez Flores may have finally stopped the rot at Vicarage Road, with back-to-back home clean sheets, but I think they will struggle against a free-scoring Chelsea team inspired by a determined Pulisic.

Anthony Martial

Martial is slowly coming back into the Fantasy picture

Price: £7.6m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Bournemouth (A)

At the start of the season, Anthony Martial‘s (£7.6m) out-of-position status seemed too good to be true.

FPL managers had been handed a midfielder from a top-six club, priced under £8.0m and playing as a centre forward.

Martial then duly delivered Fantasy returns in each of the first three Gameweeks of 2019/20, before injury ruled him out of the next six in a row.

However, the French international finally returned to the starting line-up against Norwich – celebrating that fact with a goal.

Of course, Martial did also missed a penalty, but it’s good to know that he has become a viable option again with United’s run of generous fixtures.

During the 3-1 win at Carrow Road, Martial had more touches in the final third (33) than Pulisic did at Burnley and received more passes in the opposition half (23) than Mohamed Salah.

This strong involvement for United bodes well for him and, provided he stays fit, he should retain his place as a first-team player, whether that’s playing out wide or straight through the centre.

United next face a Bournemouth side that has improved defensively in recent weeks. After going the first eight league matches without a clean sheet, the Cherries have kept two back-to-back against Norwich and Watford.

However, Manchester United, despite some criticism of their attack of late, have six goals in their last three matches in all competitions and have scored eight times in their three previous meetings with Bournemouth.

Therefore, I would not be surprised if this match was also marked by another attacking display.

Sébastien Haller

Haller deserves a chance against Newcastle in Gameweek 11

Price: £7.4m

Ownership: 4.8%

GW11 Opponent: Newcastle United (H)

It might seem hard to justify a player that has only scored one goal in his last six league games.

There is no doubt that the early stages of a bandwagon were being formed when Sébastien Haller (£7.4m) scored three goals in two games.

Yet despite his lack of goals, he remains West Ham’s second-highest FPL points’ scorer (41) for the season and for a player within his price bracket that seems fairly respectable when considering that Raúl Jiménez has 43 points and Ashley Barnes has 36 points.

It may sound cliché but I think there is still more to come from Haller.

He is currently averaging an attacking fantasy return for every 162 mins played which doesn’t seem unreasonable for someone during his debut campaign for a mid-table side.

No doubt this could have been better had he not missed two big chances since Gameweek 1 as well.

Up next for the Hammers at the London Stadium are a Newcastle United team that currently reside in the relegation zone.

It’s just the kind of match that Haller needs for his confidence. After all, two of his last goals have come at home and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s able to unlock the Magpies defence and get back to scoring ways.

  2. Walcott as a differential punt?

Following my post highlighting Jack Grealish as a differential ahead of Gameweek 9, I’ve been on the lookout for another midfielder with low ownership who I think could do well over the next few weeks.

Whilst I had reservations about posting this one, largely because of inconsistencies associated with the player, his form, data and fixtures all suggest attacking returns are on the way, so here it is…

    Theo Walcott (6.2, 0.4% ownership).

    Stop smirking, here’s why…

Following Everton’s disappointing 1-0 defeat at Burnley in Gameweek 8, Marco Silva rung the changes for West Ham’s visit to Goodison. Djibril Sidibe was handed a first start in place of the suspended Seamus Coleman while Tom Davies, Andre Gomes, Walcott and Bernard came in.

The result was an Everton performance full of energy, that should have reaped a much greater victory margin than 2-0. Walcott was Man of the Match, assisting Bernard for the opener. It was arguably his best performance in an Everton shirt.

Against Watford on Tuesday, upon his introduction at half-time he changed the game, supplying a delightful assist for Mason Holgate’s headed opener. Theo’s display was universally praised, with his pace, energy and direct running causing Watford problems throughout. Walcott’s had a career of inconsistencies, yet for the second successive home game, he made the difference.

Following the game, manager Marco Silva discussed Walcott’s impact…
“Theo made a big impact again. The change we made at half-time had a big impact on our second half. We found the spaces more easily than in the first half because we started faster our build-up. Theo was always a really important player for me, even if sometimes he was not playing, not starting, and he knows that. He had the chance against West Ham because he showed me he deserved it and the performance he made was really good. Against Watford he did a very good second half, was really important. He is in a good moment and for sure he will help us in the next games as well.”

I’ve spent a bit of time in the Members Area, and here’s where it gets interesting…

Over the last two Gameweeks, Walcott has had more shots than any other midfielder, he sits top (level with Raheem Sterling) for shots in the box, and third for Penalty Area Touches.

So, what about fixtures? TOT, sou, NOR – pretty good right?

Walcott has previous with Tottenham having played for Arsenal (remember his 2-0 hand gesture from the stretcher?!). He also tends to save his best performances for them. In 15 league games (bear in mind in four of them he played less than 15 minutes), he’s hit 6 goals and recorded 4 assists, including two goals for Everton in both games last season. As for Tottenham, well they’re just not very good. After that, it’s Southampton and Norwich, two of the worst performing defences in recent weeks.

I know Walcott won’t be the most popular pick round these parts, but even his biggest critics have nothing but praise for his recent performances. Maybe it’s time to put those reservations aside?

There are no words that can ever make me get Walcott!

(Although excellent analysis and logically he does look a good pick).

As Everton fan I’m staying well away from Everton players.

Walcott has his moments but we are really bad. We lack options down the right so think he should play most games in the current formation.

I’m not convinced and expect Spurs to beat us on Sunday.

I listen to most Of the Everton podcasts. Blind optimism at the start of the season. Now it’s doom and gloom.
A big problem is Siggy. Too slow for the way Silva wants to play. He’s been benched now.
Silva also has one way of playing and won’t adapt when it’s not working.

And of course that’s not before we get started on our recruitment. 200m spent on what?!
              Where’s the number 9?
              Where’s a better centre back?
              No cover down the right.
Moise Kean!? A foreign teenager. Most established foreigners take at least a season to adapt. How on earth can we we expect him to come in and bang straight away?
              Rant over!

          Man, that's a real stretch...

The issue with Walcott is that he blows so ridiculously hot and cold. He can do this for a few games then just as quickly get dropped for being anonymous.

I agree with this. Walcott's random bursts of good form followed by anonymous or outright terrible displays are impossible to predict. Even if he has 4-5 games of great form and stats he could always randomly become utter crap out of nowhere.

You dont like CHO then, even longer term? Find myself benching him for Lundstram this week but hes likely to come on with his cameo points anyway when Ota is benched again. Not too worried owning him for now as I dont think Lamps rates Pulisic Ahead of him.

I own Otamendi and Hudson-Odoi too, with Rico, Dendoncker and Greenwood on my bench, so it looks like I'm a little more stretched than you. If he's going to be a rotation risk with Pulisic going forward, I'm not sure my squad will be able to handle it. Will probably sleep on it and decide close to deadline.

like i said below, i'm still shading towards keeping CHO and saving the FT, downgrading Ota next week and seeing what i have to work with over the intl break.

Everyone seems like they are dismissive of this post just because its Walcott and he's an FPL troll...

I think if you blind out his name and just put his recent stats and performances there would be alot of interested people.

Good shout AVFC, definitely on the lookout for your differential picks since your Grealish pick last week!

Did you watch his last game? It was distinctly average. One, singular good performance against West Ham is not enough to base anything on. When he's done this for nearly a decade, it's clearly a feature, not a bug.

Punting on Richarlison for the next three myself but Walcott has looked very sharp in recent appearances so hopefully his input down the right can make Eve attack more potent!

‘Poor defensive side’ just isn’t true is it.

Most got him at 4.5 - he is a very boring basic pick (but that’s exactly why people are buying him)

Don’t need him to do that, though. It’s just whether he is a better option than Rashford and Jiménez . I think he might be worth the extra outlay.

If you can do it with a single transfer, it gives you a nice differential. If you have to move other pieces, then I’m less inclined towards it. Could also downgrade to Jiménez or Maupay or Barnes; maybe even consider Rashford?

The type of player to be ridiculed on here only to get a 16 point haul. Then everyone buys him and he blanks for 10 weeks in a row.

He’s too streaky, and that’s always been his big problem from a fantasy perspective.

And, with the added headache of rotation hanging over him, I just couldnt possibly bring him in.

                      sounds like a good idea.
Your bench isn't very strong, esp if Ota isn't playing. Zinc has to go due to his injury, but maybe rather Ota instead of Van D? This doesn't give you City defensive which you might want. Mendy might be an option to bring in instead (if you insist on City Def)

I think potter has inferred that trossard will be eased back in, another cameo for him imo and it wasn’t Connolly who made way last week.

                    Which transfer should I do?
                    A. Jim and Wilson to Vardy and Connoly
                    B. Wilson and cantwell to martial and Connoly

B....if your desperate for Connoly. Personally I’d wait to see if Trossard moves him to the bench.

Don’t own TAA, but seriously considering bringing in Mendy ahead of him for Southampton at home. Is this madness?

Very short term but could easily pay off

This is the issue. I think I’ll be bringing in TAA anyway (after the international break).

I did this.. hoping he'll keep his place and keep fit though only really brought him in for SOU.

I’d prioritise TAA over Mendy, plus with City’s fixtures i can’t see as many clean sheets for him compared to TAA

I’d agree. Though I am concerned that Liverpool have only kept 2 CS this season compared to city’s 5

                    A. Lundstram has more chance of a clean sheet home v Burnley
                    B. Wilson has more chance of scoring home v United

Has to be Wilson what's the point of owning him otherwise ?
