Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

I’m itching to buy Pulisic !

The rotation risk is doing my head in though. Surely he’s played his way into that team now Though? CHO could play on the opposite wing if need be.....

He's in the team for the next few weeks I am pretty sure. In theory Pulisic could have a stinker and then CHO could always come in and score a hattrick.

Can't see Willian benched for Hudson-Odoi or Pedro, Possibly Pulisic as he primarily played on the right for Dortmund - more thank capable on any wing, but that might let Hudson into the team if he did ever go to the right

Hudson-Odoi didn't do too much when he came on today and Pulisic seems to have earned his spot there

Pulisic looking a slightly better pick at the minute but not worth the risk for me

More than happy with 90 mins starting Mount

        Cheers Al. Food for thought..

I didn’t realise he could also play on the right, good to know.

It’s one of those high risk, high rewards situations. As of now he’s been high reward. With the upcoming fixtures it could just continue that way.

Seeing a lot of Sterling > Mane suggests, not many going Salah > Mane? any particular reason why apart from the fixtures? Salah not getting the mins, and surely will have his niggle assessed over the intl week... I'd rather Sterling getting 90 than Salah getting 60

    Pope
    TAA Ota Tomori Soy Lund
    Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell 4.6
    Auba Tammy Wilson

Always planned to get a Liverpool attacker for this GW

    Options
    1) Sterling -> Salah/Mane and bank a FT
    2) Sterling+Ota -> Robbo+Mane

Currently leaning towards 3) with Salah... feel Salah and Mané tend to alternate and it’s Salah’s turn now (bit silly logic, but Salah has the set pieces and has better stats, higher xG, etc)

Not actually sure what to do here other than I feel Kun and Boly should go...

    1FT 0.4itb
    Pope, McGovern
    TAA, Lunds, Willems, Rico, Boly*
    Mané, KDB, Mount, Barnes, Dendo
    Kun*, Vardy, Abraham

    Potential options:
    Kun, Dendo, Boly >
    A) Jimi, Martial, Robbo
    B) Firmino, Martial, Soy/ Tomori
    C) Mousset, Sterling, Soy/ Tomori

I could do any of the above with only 2 moves for a -4, but they have to involve Kun out to fund or just Kun out and save other moves...?!

    Any advice appreciated!

Am I the only fool who transfered in Cancelo? Dont really know Pep's reason for benching both Mendy and Cancelo this week, resting them for Liverpool? Anyway, after such a display Walker rather stays in the first team doesn't he eh?

    1. Klaren
      • 6 Years

I don't think that Cancelo has ever been solid first choice anyway, they will get rotated throughout the season apart from any bans/injuries.

I transfered Cancelo in for Otamendi hah. Maybe you're right. I should have waited a week or two before getting him. But I really believe Cancelo was more of a first choice. He played x3 90 minutes, played really well and provided attacking threat which Walker rarely does/is not said to (till today...). I was really surprised by today's line-ups, but the fact that Angelino also played instead of Mendy makes me believe that was some long term plan from Pep.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years

I think the reason it is sometimes difficult to predict Pep is that people think there is some kind of a masterplan in place, whereas I think he just has to let everyone play from time to time and makes decisions on based on nothing particular ( the famous Pep roulette no...). Unless it is some important game like vs Lfc or other top6 team

        1. FPL Blow-In
          • 11 Years

I was referring to your last sentence of Walker now being in the starting line up after his display. Going off that logic neither Mendy or Cancelo would have been dropped in the first place sat they have both been playing very well. I don’t think it’s a master plan on Pep’s behalf either. Just keeping everyone happy and also match ready.
