Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

I think the point might lie in that JWP has scored 5 points less than Man Utds non-star player McTominay.
McTominay doesn't excite me for 5.1 so I'm not going to get excited by JWP at 5.8 with 2 returns in 11 games.

I need to get rid of Otamendi, Salah, Pukki and get Mane, Vardy and a defender that's not Otamendi.

Does this warrant a WC? I don't think the moves are that urgent but price changes can cause a big swing and I don't see any big fixture swings that would require a drastic change in my team until January so thinking I might as well use it now.

    Would appreciate any input/suggestions. Thanks!

Thanks for the insight. I'm not that worried about Connolly as I wouldn't play him anyway in the foreseeable future, he'd just be backup for any unexpected rotation/etc.

However I do feel like Salah needs to go. Klopp keeps saying he is ok but then subs him out with almost half an hour to go. For that price range, that's not a risk that I want to take and with the price movements in opposite directions I'd rather do the Salah to Mane move sooner than later.

Getting rid of Sterling is probably a good idea but the price changes with the others is a worry so might have to wait till later for that move unless I WC.

Not at all. Last defender is who, btw? Currently, I think Ota and Salah is the most pressing change. Pukki to Jimenez if you fancy his fixture and form over Pukki, but another option could be to could be prepping for a liv double up come gw 13, for instance with Ota to Robertson, Pukki to Mousset / Ota to Robertson, Salah to Mane, Pukki to Ings.

          1. Klaren
            • 6 Years

Last defender is Kelly, I guess I already have subconsciously removed him from my team due his fixtures. Like Connolly, he is a bench fodder though so not a priority to replace.

Liverpool double up is something I'll definitely do either for GW13 or GW14. Apart from some price losses, I agree that I don't need to WC and if I don't end up doing it, I'll probably do Pukki to Jimenez with my FT as you said. What makes me consider to WC team is because I doubt I'll really need to WC at any point before end of December. I've never kept a WC this late and with the amount of season keepers due to their value (Mount, Abraham, Rico, Lundstram) and the premiums, I'm not sure if I'll ever need more than a few FTs anyway.

Either way I guess I'll wait till tomorrow and work on some long term planning before I decide.

I'm most likely still going to bench both, but I'm going to save a ft by holding Trossard for the next patch of green now. Happily going to play him in home games against sides who come there for 3 points, perfect for his style.

Sheffield are overperforming their xgc a lot, meaning they're either better at 1) goalkeeping, 2) outperform other teams in the quality of opponent's players that get into scoring position 3) some other hidden qualitative variable stats don't pick up on, or 4) luck. I expect their future projections to regress negatively.

Dean Henderson is an excellent shotstopper. Sheffield United's over performance in xGA is similar to West Ham with Fabianski (West Ham are now conceding a lot more without Fabianski)

Good week, 78 points with Sterling captain fail, Cancelo no show and Chelsea clean sheet lost in the last minute. Yet, can't help feeling it could have gone a lot better. Rico surprising on second sub behind Mount with another CS has me slightly peeved, in hindsight I shouldn't have been so quick by the Tomori/Soy/Rico decision, blinded by Martial back and the Norwich game. Only players to let me down were, shockingly enough, fixture-favorite City players and an unlucky Tomori. All others thumbs up, but that was sort of expected beforehand, hence sitting with this feeling: Tammy, Jimenez, Trossard, Mane, Lundstram, Henderson. Vardy and Soyuncu to play.

Greedy is the wrong word. Expectations met on everyone but Jimenez (and the City/Che boys), who surprised positively, but still wasn't a huge deviance from the norm score over, say, ten games vs Arsenal. Cancelo benched I sort of expected, so similarly, but inversely this time, not too disappointed. However, the KdB and Sterling captaincy fail, huge gap from expectations. Also, Mount could easily have had a goal in his game, but because Cancelo didn't play and Rico is second sub behind Mount, I get his 1 point off the bench instead.

If I had a worse team and got this score, I would be overjoyed. Now I'm just meh. According to fplreview, even this gw my luck factor was negative.

    B) Firmino, Martial, Soy/ Tomori
    C) Mousset, Sterling, Soy/ Tomori

There's inherent risk to any outcome, but now is the best time to deleverage city assets, probably. To be fair, if you feel that's a risk not worth taking, I like Kun to Ayew/Mousset for this gw as well, your bench is strong enough to do Dendocker Sterling for gw 13.

Despite their defensive howlers I still don't expect . They are also massively underperforming their xgc, while Leicester is converting at a far higher rate than their current Xg or Rodgers-historic goal conversion rate should suggest. I'd play the other 7 ahead of him and feel good about having him as an option in other gws.

I guess it was mentioned in one article here before Lei match that Saints are weak on their right flank. Chilwell at least probably did benefit from that.

I think Man City has become too unpredictible... Last season their assets were one of the most secure investments and now... I'm not sure if I should rely that much on them anymore (like triple City, captaining most of the season, even Sterling at 12m doesn't look that appealing...)

    1. Sgt Frank Drebin

They play sometimes like in the Guardiola's first season there.

Moreover Man City (even at home) doesnt look like a fixture we should avoid at all costs when deciding who to bench... Liverpool doesn't play well defensively away from home too.
