Captaincy fails for over two-thirds of top 10k Fantasy managers

Manchester City’s unexpectedly narrow 2-1 win over Southampton came at a cost for a large chunk of the top 10,000 managers in Fantasy Premier League.

Between them, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£10.2m) were handed the armband by almost 70% of the FPL bosses who were inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 11 deadline.

The premium midfield pair duly blanked against the Saints, with Sterling picking up a booking to compound his owners’ misery.

Just under 6.5% of this elite group had more joy with a Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) captaincy, at least, while around one in four top 10k managers overlooked the City trio altogether.

The highest-owned player inside the top 10,000 is Jamie Vardy (£9.3m).

The Leicester City striker, who faces Crystal Palace on Sunday, featured in only 33.25% of top 10k squads ahead of the Gameweek 10 fixtures but his 20-point haul against Southampton has understandably increased his popularity.

Of course, a fair number of the new entrants inside the top 10,000 would have been helped there by owning Vardy in the first place.

The Foxes’ forward was by some distance the most-bought FPL asset of Gameweek 11, being transferred in by just over 675,000 managers.

De Bruyne remains in one in three top 10k squads, with Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) and John Lundstram (£4.7m) – both of whom delivered double-digit hauls on Saturday – also widely owned assets.

Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.4m) popularity continues to dwindle, with just over one in four top 10,000 managers hanging onto the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah doesn’t feature in the top 10k Wildcard template, with Sadio Mane (£11.9m) proving a much more popular buy.

A two-man strike force of Vardy and Abraham is being widely favoured, with budget asset Aaron Connolly (£4.6m) the third-most-popular FPL forward among the elite managers who used their Wildcard this week.

There is predictably a lot of crossover between the template Wildcards inside the top 10k and outside of it, with Salah and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) proving more popular in the chasing pack.

We have now hit the 50% mark for Wildcard usage in the top 10k.

One in four of the top 10,000 FPL managers have already used their Triple Captain chips, with the Free Hit and Bench Boost chips not as heavily relied on.

Chip usage inside the top 10k

Just under 33% of the top 10,000 have yet to use a single chip but over 25% have used at least two already.

2.2% of the top 10k have maxed out on their allotted chips already, leaving only their second Wildcard to be used.

    Drop which to afford Vardy?

    1) Sterling
    2) KDB
    3) Neither and go after Tielemans instead of Vardy

His form.does not justify his price. There's always the off chance he is benched. KdB far more nailed.
Vardy just looks much more appealing as an FPL Option anyway at the moment.

        Without a hit: Mane.
With hits: Ota, King, Mount out, but then it's more or less fodder + Vardy.

Sterling with 24 penalty box touches today - that might be the highest I've ever seen. It amounted to 1 shot, 0 shots on target and 1 FPL point. That might be even crazier.

It's so frustrating Salah dropped on a Saturday night, despite many of his replacements playing on Tuesday/Wednesday. Price changes shouldn't happen daily, they should take effect the night before the deadline.

This looks like yet another rant against casuals who make super early transfers, but nightly changes probably hurt casuals far more than non-casuals in the long run (as casuals don't use the price prediction sites for TV gains as much as we do).

The TV market is contradictory in itself. Casuals annoy us with their early transfers, but we ultimately benefit more from a mechanism that rewards early transfers. The price change system is dominated by one demographic, only for the other demographic to exploit it better. If price changes were less incessant, there'd be more parity for players of both demographics.

            • 8 Years

I think it has more loss than gain for late transfer people. Because if you have a player who rises early its probably someone who you will keep for a week or few. So early rise dosnt differ much from late rise. On the other hand the player you are looking to bring in rises and gives you migraine.

Agreed, but it just seems arbitrary that those who sold Salah on Saturday night are currently better off than those who sold him on Sunday morning (or plan to sell him in the next few days). The risk/reward dynamic of chasing rises vs avoiding injuries adds an interesting dimension to the game, but being slightly more patient shouldn't be punished on such a regular basis IMO.

100%, people holding back every single week in case of an injury is wrong at times. If I can wait till Friday great but if not I will move earlier. There are so few injuries and if there are a quick -4 will sort the problem. Unless very unlucky it will happen very rarely. Blind leading blind at times on here. TV not most important but it is quite important, look at Andy after he lost some TV after his incident, he is a player behind most others.

Agreed, a more aggressive transfer strategy is being rewarded this season. Have a plan for the coming weeks and execute it as late as you dare. With the likes of Lundstram and Rico there are plenty of cheap playing back ups to cover any unexpected injuries.

      I reckon this.....

Van Dijk has become a bit goal attempt shy.
Van Dijk heading for a price drop tomorrow.
Van Dijk’s fixtures becoming trickier considering Liverpool starting to falter.

      Janmaat fixtures looking pretty good.
      Janmaat like a bonus point.
Watford will start getting the odd result soon.

I agree the Liverpool fixtures look good on paper but at some point I feel they are gonna come unstuck. They have struggled in a few games recently and hit out of jail. Van Dijk has simply not scored enough points so far for the price tag and I am done with him.

I may regret the move but I suspect not.

That would suck. Ota already blocked King from coming off the bench, so jammy Lundstrams would add insult to injury.

keeping an eye on it but Liverpool's upcoming fixtures are too good. And they are miles ahead of the rest of the league this season.

I'm not doing this move now, or maybe noteven at all, but......

Is it even worth doing Sterling > Mane if you were to do it, considering they play against one another next GW?

Could go either way that couldn't it?

        Form - Mane
        Fixtures - Mane
        Price directions - Mane
        Nailedness - Mane
Value for money so far this season - Mane (top scoring mid)

I literally can't think of a single reason not to make the move. I'd do it for it a hit...

Fixtures look bad but can see them scoring. Manu and pool are not unbeatable. Arsenal are porus. Wolves have fixture congesion. Leicester also porus sometimes.

Sterling & Montoya - > Son & TAA worth considering?

Do you think Sterling - > Salah next week would be the better play?

We can't plan when to get Salah yet imo. We need to see him fully fit then jump on him as soon as we've seen that.

Mane in for Salah today was the move

Asses Sterling or Salah in for Sterling next week

.2 swing, cover most of the bases, and more dodgy ankle news, probably gain .1/.2 on Mane also

Really stuck for what to do...

    A) Burn a transfer
    B) Aubameyang + Maddison > Jimenez + Son
    C) Cantwell + Maddison > Martial + Hayden

    Or something else?

    Current squad:

    Pope / Button
    TAA / Mendy / Soy / Lund / Rico
    Mane / KDB / Madds / Mount / Cantwell
    Tammy / Auba / Vardy

    Button; Janmaat Soyuncu Elneny

Yeah I just brought in Mané. A week early but need him for the fixture swing. Did Aguero, CHO and Otamendi --> Jimenez, Mane and Janmaat (-4).

To be honest, could put the C on any of the three strikers. Interesting captaincy week.
